2025 LAD Draft Preview

The 2025 MLB trade deadline is on Thursday, July 31st at 6 p.m. ET. This is the last day for teams to make trades involving players on 40-man rosters.

2025 MLB draft: Complete order of picks for every round

IMO, the Dodgers look for who the best player to fit in the LAD organization in the future.  Early on in the draft they (again IMO) they look for high ceilings.  They want that HR, but those are not all that evident as to when they draft.  In 2025, they draft #40, #41, #65, #104 on the first day.  Which players at #40 and #41 do the Dodgers believe will be the best for their organization?  We will get to that.

In the AF era, there have been 10 drafts.  If you look at past trends as to who the Dodgers might select in the 1st three rounds, RHP has been overwhelmingly selected.  17 of the 33 picks were RHP: 12 college and 5 HS.  One college (Kyle Funkhouser) and one HS (JT Ginn) RHP did not sign.

Other positions have been spread out:

  • LHP – 2 selected – 1 college, 1 HS
  • OF – 4 selected – 1 college, 3 HS
  • SS – 3 selected – 1 college, 2 HS
  • C – 3 selected – 3 college
  • 3B – 3 selected – 2 college, 1 HS
  • 2B – 1 selected – 1 college

Overall the Dodgers have drafted 21 college players in the 1st three rounds and 12 HS players.  Louisville and Vanderbilt have the two most selected college players in the LAD 1st three rounds with 4 each.  That is LAD super scout Marty Lamb territory. So if there is a player high on the LAD list in Marty’s territory, they will be strongly considered.

One year where it appears that the Dodgers went for need more than overall best prospect was 2019.  There were two HS SS that were high on the LAD list.  My close scout friend with knowledge on the LAD draft told me that Gunnar Henderson was the name to watch with the Dodgers.  If Henderson was gone, next up was Anthony Volpe.  This was a heavy draft of HS SS.  But the Dodgers wanted college power bats and went with Kody Hoese and Michael Busch.  Both SS were available when the Dodgers selected Hoese.  The Dodgers could have selected Henderson and then Busch.

The last time the Dodgers selected #40 was 2022, and that pick was technically a 2nd round pick.  The two names most often identified with the Dodgers were Dalton Rushing and Jacob Misiorowski.  They couldn’t have missed with either player.

In 2023 the Dodgers were selecting #36.  The names most associated with the Dodgers at the time were:

  • George Lombard Jr., HS SS – Ranked #31, drafted #26 by NYY
  • Jonny Farmelo, HS OF – Ranked #39, drafted #29 by Seattle
  • Adrian Santana, HS SS – Ranked #38, drafted #31 by Tampa Bay
  • Charlee Soto, HS P – Ranked #28, drafted #34 by Minnesota
  • Thomas White, HS P – Ranked #24, drafted #35 by Miami

There was a college player they did show interest in…University of Miami 3B, Yohandy Morales.  He was ranked #20 and drafted #40 by Washington.

The Dodgers were hoping that any of the five would drop down to #36.  While Lombard Jr. may have been an internal favorite, there was always little doubt that he would have been selected before #36.  It was also widely reported at the time that the Dodgers coveted Farmelo, and that was a reasonable belief that he would have been available. Seattle dashed those plans.

While going into the draft, Thomas White was a clear front runner for the Dodgers, but he was a highly coveted LHP, and bound to be snapped up well before the Dodgers selected.  However, it also became increasingly clear that it was going to take a huge bonus to pry him away from his commitment to Vanderbilt. Miami selected White one pick prior to the LAD selection.  It took $4.1MM to sign White, way above his bonus slot of $2.42MM.  Would the Dodgers have paid that?  Miami had the available draft $$$, while LAD did not.  The Dodgers had $7,224,600, while Miami had $12,829,600 in draft bonus $$$.  It is doubtful that the Dodgers would have committed 56% of their allotted draft $$$ on one HS pitcher.

So the Dodgers selected a very fast Texas HS CF who was thought to be at best a late 2nd round pick, and probably a 3rd round pick…Kendall George.  George had one outstanding skill, his speed.  Some said on the 20-80 scale, George had a 90 run.  He had zero SLG and his physical attributes did not lend to any belief that he would grow into it.  Basically, the Dodgers selected a younger Jeren Kendall, except with less power.

Sometimes the Dodgers have some strange draft strategy.  In 2021, the Dodgers drafted 17 pitchers with their 19 picks, including current key contributors Ben Casparius, Justin Wrobleski, and Emmet Sheehan. One of the two position players the Dodgers drafted that year did not sign — high school outfielder Mike Sirota, who instead went to college, got drafted by the Reds in 2024, and is now with the Dodgers thanks to the Gavin Lux trade this January, which also brought the Dodgers the 41st pick this year.

So who are the hot names for the Dodgers this year:

Latest Baseball America:

  • Patrick Forbes, RHP, Louisville
  • Quentin Young, 3B/OF, Oaks Christian (Calif.) HS

Baseball America has been consistent from the beginning by mocking Louisville RHP Patrick Forbes to the Dodgers.  BA also has them aligned with Oaks Christian HS SS/3B/OF Quentin Young for multiple mock drafts.

Latest MLB Pipeline:

  • Quentin Young, 3B/OF, Oaks Christian (Calif.) HS
  •  JB Middleton, RHP, Southern Mississippi

MLB Pipeline also has the Dodgers considering North Carolina C, Luke Stevenson.  MLB Pipeline thinks that the College WS put Forbes into the 30-39 range.  They have Forbes going to Tampa Bay at #37.  And TB is very interested in Forbes.  A lot of chatter has Forbes going to Tampa Bay before he gets to LAD.

Kiley McDaniel/ESPN have the Dodgers taking Quentin Young and Patrick Forbes, as does the Sporting Tribune.

One name that will not go away is Jack Bauer, LHSP, Lincoln-Way East HS (IL).  This is a HS pitcher who hits 103.  This has the spread anywhere from Top of the Rotation (#1) to bust.  This is the type of player the Dodgers love to gamble on.   He will be a tough sign as he is committed to Mississippi State. Bauer was originally committed to Virginia, but head coach Brian O’Connor left Virginia to take the Mississippi State job, and Bauer is following him.

For me, this has too much Maddux Bruns memories.  I was not in favor of Bruns and I would not be in favor of Bauer to LAD.  The Dodgers selected 2 HS pitchers in the first round: JT Ginn (DNS) and Bruns.  Bauer does not fit the trend, but the Dodgers do love a high risk/high reward player.

Other players who have a chance to fall to the Dodgers pick and could be considered.

  • RHP Anthony Eyanson, Louisiana State
  • OF Mason Neville, Oregon
  • RHP Riley Quick, Alabama
  • CF Cam Cannarella, Clemson

Forbes is undoubtedly a Marty Lamb prospect, and makes a lot of sense if he is available at #40.  Quentin Young has strong bloodlines, and looks as if he can follow his uncles to MLB. Huge power upside.  Some have him at the 80 grade for power. The question will be, will the Dodgers offer enough to buy out his LSU commitment.

The Dodgers could select SS/3B Brady Ebel in the 2nd round, although a recent publication has him going in the 1st round.  That could make 3 Corona HS players as potential 1st round picks – RHP Seth Hernandez, SS, Billy Carlson, and Ebel.  It might be very tough to buy out two LSU commitments, as Ebel is also committed to LSU.  Dodgers have zero chance on Hernandez or Carlson, and probably would not take Ebel in 1st round.

Like 2019, this is a very heavy HS SS draft.  7 of top 13 draft prospects are HS SS.  8 could go in 1st round.  There are another 3-4 top college SS projected for 1st consideration as well.

I am going with the apparent consensus, RHP Patrick Forbes and 3B/OF Quentin Young for #40 and #41.  I would not be upset with either of those picks.

For those that like to follow the draft, who do you think the Dodgers should select?

I will have a write up on the draft picks early next week.

MiLB GAME SUMMARY REPORTS

Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston) 12 – OKC Comets 8

Landon Knack started and continued to pitch his way out of the LAD organization.  In this game, Knack completed 5.0 innings, allowing 6 runs (5 earned), 6 hits, 2 BB, 3 K  All 6 runs were the result of 3 HR’s he allowed.  Since June, Knack has started 7 games.  He has pitched 35.1 innings, allowed 35 runs (33 earned), 41 hits, 17 BB, 25 K.  Not a great resume to advance in front of AF/BG.

Neither Zach Penrod nor Sam Carlson pitched well in tonight’s game.

OKC had 12 hits including 5 XBH.  Ryan Ward’s 3 hits and his 6 TB was the hitting star.

  • Ryan Ward – 3-5, 2 runs, 1 RBI, double (20), triple (4)
  • Kody Hoese – 2-3, 1 BB, 2 runs, 1 RBI, 2 doubles (13), sac fly
  • José Ramos – 2-3, 1 run, 2 RBI, HR (1)
  • Justin Dean – 2-5
  • Alex Freeland – 1-3, 2 BB, 1 run, 1 RBI
  • Hunter Feduccia – 1-3, 2 doubles, 1 run

Box Score

Arkansas Travelers (Seattle) 7 – Tulsa Drillers 5

Chris Campos was solid for 5.0 innings.  He allowed 1 unearned run going into the 6th.  In the 6th, Campos got 2 quick outs to start the inning, and then he hit the proverbial wall.  He allowed a solo HR, a double, a BB, and a 3-run game tying HR before getting the final out.

Livan Reinoso and Brandon Neeck proved to not be the answer in the 7th.  Another game where the Tulsa bullpen blew up.  Combined the two walked three batters, threw 4 WP, hit one batter, and allowed 1 single.  This led to 2 runs and the final differential.

Offensively, the Drillers had 15 hits and 4 BB.  Unfortunately, 14 of the 15 were singles, and the Drillers were 3-15 wRISP.

  • Taylor Young – 2 runs, 1 RBI, double (14)
  • Kendall Simmons – 3-5, 1 RBI
  • Sean McLain – 3-5, 2 runs
  • Yeiner Fernandez – 2-4, 1 BB, 1 run
  • Kyle Nevin – 2-4, 1 BB, 3 RBI

Box Score

Lansing Lugnuts (A’s) 10 – Great Lakes Loons 1 (Game 1 – 7 innings)

Four of five Loons pitchers were totally ineffective.  They gave up 10 runs, and 11 hits in 7.0 IP.

The Loons had two hits and one XBH.  Down 9-0 in the 4th, Kendall George led off with a triple (5).  That was followed by a BB to Josue De Paula.  George scored on a DP.  De Paula had the other hit, a single.

Box Score

Great Lakes Loons 4 – Lansing Lugnuts (A’s) 1 (Game 2 – 7 innings)

Sean Linan started and completed 6 strong innings.  Linan allowed 1 run on 4 hits, 0 BB, and 6 K.  The run Linan allowed was due to a triple and sac fly.  The three other hits were singles.

In the 3rd, Jake Gelof singled, stole 2nd, and score on a Nelson Quiroz single.

The Loons opened up the scoring in the 5th.  With 2 outs, Kendall George singled and Josue De Paula drew a BB.  Logan Wagner singled George home.  Zyhir Hope tripled home two and a 4-1 lead after 5 innings.

No Loons batter had a multi-hit game and Hope’s triple was the lone XBH.

Box Score

Inland Empire 66ers (LAA) 5 – Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 3

This was Blake Snell’s first rehab start.  He completed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit, no BB, and registered 4 Ks.  He threw 31 pitches (23 for strikes).  He probably has 2 more rehab starts before he is ready to rejoin the rotation.

Jholbran Herder (4.0 IP) and Domingo Geronimo (3.0 IP) followed Snell, and they did not fare as well.  Herder allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in his 4.0 IP, while Geronimo allowed 1 run on 2 hits.  One very positive sign was that neither pitcher issued a BB.

Offensively, the Quakes scored 3 solo runs in 3 innings.  In the 3rd, 2 RC batters drew walks, and Eduardo Quintero singled to load the bases.  Samuel Munoz hit a sac fly to score 1.

In the 4th, doubles by Niko Perez (8) and Victor Rodrigues (7), scored RC’s 2nd run.

In the 7th, Eduardo Guerrero drew a BB and moved to 3B on a single by Quintero.  Guerrero scored on Munoz’s second SF.

  • Niko Perez – 3-4, 1 run, double (8)
  • Eduardo Quintero – 2-4, 1 BB
  • Victor Rodrigues – Double (7)

Box Score

Watched Snell pitch last night. He would have had 2 clean innings except the catcher dropped a strike three call, then threw the ball high and the runner was safe. The hit he gave up was a bloop single. A passed ball on a strike call got the runners to second and third, Snell then struck the batter out ending the second inning. Lee Elia, former Cubs manager, passed away.

Blake Snell better come back and dominate. He owes us.

I’m going with Brady Ebel, just because it would be such a good story.

There was another pitcher, Cam something (Edited: Leiter) that sounded very Dodgers-forward

It’s Hollywood, so take Jack Bauer! (granted I have no clue who any of these guys are).

Tonight the slump ends, as we face the eternal slump buster, SF. Take this series and end the first half on a high note.

Have to have their hitting shoes on tonight, they are facing Webb who has a sub 3 ERA.

They certainly have hard row to hoe tonight. Realistically, we only need to win 1 game to avoid major damage. Bit difference between winning 1 and getting swept. 2 out of 3 would be ideal. Hopefully the day off has helped. Go Dodgers!!!

They wear Dodger blue, so he is just going to the Japanese version! Dodgers just claimed Nick Nastrini and DFAd Noah Davis. Nastrini returns to the Dodger organization, he was traded to the White Sox in the Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly trade.

i guess the closest thing to Kwan and a trade deadline acquisition would be….
Trae Turner?

but Turner was much better and much more accomplished. I guess if history is any guide, then you have to say no, right? Kwan that is.

yeah, I mean if it was up to me, I’d be all for it. I feel like at times the lineup could use different types of hitter/approach to throw the pitcher off a groove.

But I don’t know anything! I’m not sure if that actually works or if it’s just a half pink theory.

All I know is that the Dodgers don’t really make that kind of trade. They go for the Gallo reclamation or they go for the Yrae Turners.

We have Betts, Edman, and Kim as depth at second. I like Freeland for ss and 3b. Maybe it should be Kim and Conforto for Kwan. I’m still hoping Outman winds up at CF so adding an outfielder doesn’t intrigue me.

Steven Kwan isn’t an elite player (Trae Turner is), but he’s really good and plays a good outfield as well. He would be a fantastic addition to our team.

However, getting him doesn’t only mean Conforto is gone. It also means much less playing time for Kim as Edman would become the primary 2b and Pages/Teo handling the other outfield spots.

So we don’t play Kim, we pay Conforto to go home, AND we give up some impact minor leaguers (likely he’ll cost more than Outman plus Knack).

The cost overall would be high, but he could be here for 10 years and become a really good player for us. I won’t mind it.

@Bluto

Are you watching / watched The Clubhouse A year with the Red Sox”? On Netflix.

Gotts say I’m really enjoying it. Cora makes no secret of his cheating with Houston. They should have voided that season. Should be left blank.
Not sure about Duran, he seems to have a number of issues. Good watch though.

hey Watford,

how are you?

I watched it. It’s great.

Its probably, along with Department Q, the only reason we still have Netflix

Im not sure how I feel about the show in total though, they left a lot of the Duran stuff in. But the Reese McGuire stuff? Nowhere to be seen.

I was recently thinking about it, when I saw some post game interviews with Betts and Freeman. They both really let on how much of a grind baseball could be, and that’s a lot of what I got out of the clubhouse too.

from what I understand, and this could totally be wrong, it’s not gonna be the socks again. A new team next season?

Hairline and Quentero moved to Great Lakes, Hope and DePaula moved to the inactive list. Guessing the futures game has something to do with that transaction. Slowly but surely we are starting to see movement.

Kiley McDaniels’ latest mock:
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45709226/2025-mlb-mock-draft-30-kiley-mcdaniel-predicts-top-picks

Has the Dodgers taking (at 40)
Cam Cannarella, CF, Clemson
Rank: 27
There’s a rumor that if both are on the board, the Dodgers will take Jack Bauer and Quentin Young at these two picks — literally the two highest-ceiling players in the draft. For entertainment’s sake, I hope that happens.

Because Young was picked earlier in this projection (as were L.A. targets Coy James, Marcus Phillips, Aaron Watson and J.B. Middleton), Cannarella fits and has been mentioned here much of the spring. Max Belyeu and Charles Davalan will go soon if they aren’t taken here. Kruz Schoolcraft is another high upside prep player the Dodgers are on.

Keep an eye on James Ellwanger, Shane Sdao and Mason Ligenza as targets at later picks.

At 41, he has them taking the aforementioned Schoolcraft.

I assume you are referring to Teoscar Hernandez. The Dodgers played a player short in Milwaukee series so they did not have to put Teoscar on the IL. So they roll him out tonight clearly still hobbled by his foot and hamstring to play in an outfield where range is more important than most. In retrospect, a bad decision. He has always been a bad outfielder when healthy. For six weeks now he has also been a below average hitter. While AF seemingly did stockpile pitching to minimize the chance of overpaying at the trade deadline, his decisions on their position player depth leave a lot to be desired. Kike, Chris Taylor, Austin Barnes, and Miguel Rojas.
Resigned Teoscar for 3 years and added Conforto. The Kim signing has been a success to this point. It has been said a lot but this is an old, unathletic, and now injured group of position players.

What a throw by Conforto!
May is not an October starter. Just too many mid mid 2 seamers. And if he can’t find command he can’t contribute in the pen. Webb is one bad mid mid 4 seamer to Ohtani from a shutout.

im on the other side on this.

feel he should be given a lot of rope. that stuff is great and he’s still finding his feet from surgery.

Really love watching him pitch.

i could be a one person minority though.

Does he have options?

The Dodgers have an annoying habit of sticking with non-producing or non-performing players way too long.

7 in a row now. I assume the Dodgers have to hit rock bottom before management does something to rebuild the atrocious pitching staff this winter.

Conforto is batting 1.000 and OPSing 5.000 in his last at bat. That’s better than Reggie Ruth or Mickey Mays. I say leave him in there.
