Vesia and Dodgers Bring Out the Brooms

Well, it wasn’t always pretty, but after 8 ½ innings, the Dodgers finished off the San Diego Padres and completed a 3-game sweep of the Friars.  The Dodgers limped back home after getting swept by LAA to face the red hot Padres.  The Padres had taken a 1 game lead in the NL West and things looked fairly ominous.

Of course the Dodgers wanted a sweep, but going into the series, I think they would have been fine with a series win of 2-1 and leaving town in a tie for the NL West.

Clayton Kershaw started Game 1 and went a solid 6.0 innings.  He allowed 1 run on a Ramón Laureano HR that hit the foul pole.  Alex Vesia continued his struggles by hitting two batters, allowing a sac bunt, a BB, and a Sac Fly, before exiting and Blake Treinen throwing 1 pitch to get Manny Machado to pop out. 5 relievers in total pitched in game 1 while allowing a single run.

Blake Snell started Game 1 and also completed 6.0 innings.  The Padres did not score off Snell after 5 hits and 2 BB.  He struck out a very uncharacteristic 3 Padres batters.  Three relievers kept San Diego off the board.

Tyler Glasnow started Game 3.  After 1 inning, he was staked to a 4-0 lead thanks to a Freddie Freeman 3-run HR, and an Andy Pages solo HR.

The Padres started to claw back in the 3rd.  Glasnow walked Jake Cronenworth to start the 3rd for his only BB of his game, and it came back to bite him.  Freddy Fermin singled to CF and was thrown out by a tremendous throw from Pages, with Cronenworth moving to 3rd.  Cronenworth scored on a Fernando Tatis Jr double, but Glasnow stranded him after ground outs by Luis Arreaz and Machado.

In the 5th, Laureano hit a fly ball to RF that got into the wind and just made it over the fence for his 2nd HR of the series.  Glasnow finished off the 5th, but his pitch count was up to 91.  The pitch count was escalated in the 3rd inning (23 pitches) and the 5th inning (24 pitches).  He was at 45 pitches for the other 3 innings.

Glasnow had 14 whiffs and his slider was a good out pitch for the day.  He had 9 whiffs on 17 swings on his slider.

Anthony Banda relieved Glasnow in the 6th, his 3rd consecutive appearance.  He allowed a pair of doubles and with one out and one run in, he was relieved by Ben Casparius with a runner on 2nd.  A HBP, ground ball force out, and a strike out and Casparius got out of the inning without another run scoring.

Blake Treinen relieved Casparius in the 7th.  He struck out Tatis Jr. and Arreaz hit a flair into CF for a single.  He worked himself around to 3rd on a pair of SB, but Blake left him on 3rd.  He got big help form HPU Jeremie Rehak when he called strike one to Machado on a 3-0 count.  Instead of a walk, Machado ended up flying out.  The HPU was horrific all game to both teams, but I am not sure if there was a more egregious blown call in this game.

Alexis Diaz came in to relieve Treinen and he did not have as successful of an outing as he did Friday.  A HBP and double put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  Alex Vesia was summoned, and everyone was holding their breath.  A force out on a ground ball hit to 2nd got the run tying run home.  Vesia got Fermin on another ground out and got out of the inning.

After Andy Pages’ HR in the 1st inning, Padres pitchers retired the next 15 consecutive batters.  Teoscar Hernández hit a 2 out flair into CF that Hernández obviously thought was going to be caught, and he jogged to 1B.  The ball fell and Hernández did not get to 2nd on a ball he absolutely could have had he hustled out of the box.  Pages followed with a flair of his own, that would have scored Hernández from 2nd but he ended up at 3rd.  Alex Call, PH for Michael Conforto, struck out.

All knotted up at 4-4, Mookie came to bat against closer Robert Suarez.  Mookie slugged a lead off HR giving the Dodgers 5-4 lead.

On to the 9th.  Vesia wanted the ball and he was due to face the top of the lineup: Tatis Jr., Arreaz, and Machado.  Vesia got Tatis Jr. and Arreaz on foul pop out to Freddie, and struck out Machado.

The good guys won.  Maybe some luck was involved, but they have lost more games due to a lot of bad luck.

For the series, some key hitters:

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. – 3-11, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Luis Arreaz – 4-11, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SF
  • Manny Machado – 1-12, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Xander Bogaerts – 1-11, 2 K, 1 HBP
  • Ramón Laureano – 2 HR

  • Shohei Ohtani – 2-9, 3 BB, 2 K
  • Mookie Betts – 1-9, 2 BB, 1 SF, HR
  • Will Smith – 0-12, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Freddie Freeman – 2-10, 1 BB, 3 K, 3-run HR
  • Teoscar Hernández – 2 HR
  • Andy Pages – 1 HR

Hitting wRISP – LAD 3-13, SD 3-20

Hits – LAD 15, SD 20

BB received – LAD 12, SD 6

K (Batters) – LAD 26, SD 24

Great sweep, now that is in the rear view mirror, and the Dodgers will be in Colorado for 4 games.

OKC Comets 9 – Albuquerque Isotopes (Colorado) 5

Home runs by Ryan Ward, Kody Hoese and CJ Alexander led the Oklahoma City Comets to a 9-5 win against the Albuquerque Isotopes Sunday night.

The homers — each hit with two outs — accounted for seven of the Comets’ runs in the series finale between the teams. Oklahoma City scored three runs in the third inning and went on to lead the rest of the game. Alexander hit a RBI triple before Ward sent a two-run homer out to left field for a 3-0 advantage in the third inning.

Albuquerque loaded the bases in the fourth inning and brought in runs on a fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly to trim OKC’s lead to one run.

Albuquerque chipped away at OKC’s lead, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and a two-run home run by Sam Hilliard in the seventh inning.

Ryan Ward connected on a two-run home run in the third inning for his PCL-leading 29th home run of the season and his first homer since July 25 in Reno…With the two-run homer, he tied OKC’s single-season record for RBI and now has a Minor League-leading 107 RBI this season. His 107 RBI are tied with Jason Martin (2022) for the most by an Oklahoma City player during the team’s Bricktown era (since 1998).

Nice win. It was a nail biter for a few minutes, but they got the job done. No let down in Denver now. Sweep those guys. First eye injection later this morning.

Bear, the injections can range from painless and painful for 24 hours, in which case I actually ice the eyeball. Sometimes you get a big spot in the center of your vision for a day as well, which is distracting as hell. But that too goes away in a day.
It’s not the most comfortable experience but in 24 hours you will be fine. A little bloodshot maybe, but fine.
Best of luck Mi Amigo.

Had a bad series. I would not categorize it as a swoon. He should be fine in Denver. Their pitching not nearly as good as the Padres. Team ERA is 6.02. Only hitter you really need to worry about is their catcher, Hunter Goodman. Their closer’s ERA is 4.99.

It looks to me like Smith could use a break. I see Rushing getting more innings in the coming days.

Teo moves like he has a bag of cement on his back. He can still swing a bat, but he’s not running well. Does he need a break? Does Freddie?

Conforto, Freeland and Kennedy look like holes in the lineup. And yet with all the issues mentioned here the team sweeps San Diego. Amazing.

First real slide of the year. He will be fine. Not even close to being as bad as some of the players have been. Be happy he has been as good as he has for as long as he has. Still leads the league in batting and OBP. Pages has hit just 3 homers on the road. His last 16 have come at Dodger Stadium and that is a record.

August is a brutal month for catchers. Almost every catcher’s second half stats take a big dive. It’s just a brutal position and it takes its toll. When was the last time both Mookie and Freddie went deep in the same game? Got to bring the intensity to Colorado. Rockies are playing some good baseball right now. Need the bats to go on a sustained roll.

Yes, I think that’s all David was saying, and some decided to jump down his throat and get all defensive. Ridic.

I hope Smith gets today off today, as he helped win us the last 3 games.

We can afford Smith to rest today and perhaps Thursday afternoon as well. This needs to be minimum 3 wins in 4 games vs a bad team.

Pads are playing SF, who sucks right now, so we won’t be getting much help from our BFF’s the giants.

I’d like to see Freeland take advantage of Coors Field and wake his bat up. That could determine if he’s getting PT in Sept and into Oct. (Yes, I’m already assuming we get to October, for the 13th straight time).

Will Smith was not himself at the plate, but boy his three put-outs at second were awesome and set the tone.

The Dodgers patchwork BP and bottom of the order bats (Freeland, Conforto, Call, Rushing, et al) make the team vulnerable, Thank goodness the master plan for our starting pitchers is starting to work.

Smith is the least of their worries. He may not have had many hits, but he also hit in some bad luck. He smoked some balls that were caught.

This was a weird series. There was such a large buildup for this series. Yet either team took charge offensively. There was a limited amount of offense from the Dodgers and even less from the Padres.

The Dodgers had just enough effective pitching and hitting to overtake the team from the south and end up with a two game lead in the division. Hopefully, that will be the only taste of leading the division by San Diego. So, with even the huge haul at the trade deadline they still can’t compete with slumping Dodger team. Take note Bradley.

Good for Mookie to finally have a huge, game winning HR. It’s been a frustrating season for him and his fans. It will be amazing if this one HR turns his season around in time for the playoffs.

Same for Alex Vesia. He had a slow start to the season. Then he was very effective for a couple of months. And recently, he was having control issues and it was becoming a high wire act whenever he entered the game. He gutted through 1 2/3 innings to go from blowing a save to getting the win.

Now on to Denver. I agree that it may be an opportunity to give Will some time off and give Rushing some added playing time. With Yamamoto, Sheehan, and Ohtani starting the first three games the Dodgers should be favored to win at least 3 games and maybe a sweep. But, strange things can happen in Colorado.

Carry on.

Geez Arreaz is a pest. He again managed a couple of bloop doubles and 2 stolen bases. You can’t strike the guy out and he’s a foul ball master until he finds way to make better contact. One of those guys you can’t stand unless he’s hitting those flairs for your side.
Seeing Machado go 0 for 5 just makes my afternoon.

I too am wondering what’s going on with Teoscar. He pulls up on some balls that look catchable, isn’t covering much ground in right and then fails to hustle out his flair that dropped inevitably costing a run.
That seemed out of character and leads me to believe something is up.
It looks like some rest would help but if I’m playing I don’t want a day out of the lineup right now. This is a critical time and if my dings can’t get worse, I’m playing.

Glasnow was sharp as was the bullpen with the exception of Diaz. I shutter when he comes in. Get another reliever back and send him down the road.

The fact that we have a tendency lately to get an early lead and cruise, allowing the opponent to crawl back in the game, is frustrating. Glasnow should have had a win.
Mookie stopped the bleeding in the 8th, thankfully. But it’s a disturbing trend that is tough on the bullpen. Scratching out a run or two mid innings would be nice.

No let downs in Colorado, please. Keep the train rollin.

Manfred said in an interview the other day that MLB would like to add 2 teams to make both leagues balanced, and that re-alignment is possible if that happens. Would be like the NBA and made into separate divisions. I would be all for that. Padres, Giants, Dodgers, Angels, Mariners and A’s all in one division. Colorado and Arizona in a separate division or you could swap Az and Las Vegas. Yankees and Mets in the same division with Boston and Toronto.

So you agree with my post from a couple of days ago.

The one possible pitfall to that is that Urshela fractured his pelvis when with the Angels a couple of years ago and hasn’t been the same ever since.

If AF decides to go after him, he’d better do a thorough physical before he signs him.

I am certainly not being critical of Smith. But just commenting on the facts. There is a reason why catchers don’t lead the league in BA at end of year. And would bet that will be the case this year, unless Will can win it with a .285 average.
You cannot deny that he was hitting about .325 just a few weeks ago

I’m not singling him out. He’s the one in a recent slump. Thats the point he has been the only one who has been consistent all year. The rest of team is mostly on life support due to injuries or just being crap. So its great we beat SD (or mostly they beat themselves) . Pitching stepped up, but offense was minimal. Someone (or two) is going to have to break out. Maybe its Mookie or Ohtani. Hoping for the best.

As you stated david, there is a very good reason catchers don’t win batting titles. One they typically don’t have the speed to get any leg hits. Then do about 175 squats, catch a bullpen, handle game management and catch a game in 95 degree heat with all that shit on and sacrifice some cage time for meetings on hitters and strategy, and see how you hit,
The last MLB catcher to win a batting title was Buster Posey in the National League in 2012. He is one of only four catchers in MLB history to win a batting title, alongside Joe Mauer (AL, 2006, 2008, 2009), Ernie Lombardi (NL, 1938, 1942), and Bubbles Hargrave (NL, 1926).
The wear and tear is physically and mentally draining.
I’m glad Rushing will get 1/2 the games in Denver. Now I wish he could hit a bit.

May as well if you’re going to keep playing Buddy Kennedy at third base. Freeland can play short, and several different guys can okay second.

Hernandez is killing us in rf. I am watching every game and it is just game in and game out. Many times he just loafs after the ball. What an inning. First the umpire blows a strike call on karros. He should have been struck out. Then the bloop that should have been caught then he throws to the wrong base.pages would have caught the ball and/or thrown the runner out. Terrible offensive lineup tonight. Bottom 4 awful.

It is beyond frustrating to watch him slow up and have balls drop a few feet in front of him. That inning was created by a missed strike on Kyle Karros and a catchable ball that Hernandez gives up on and lets it drop. I know we may not pay for this defense tonight but it happens often enough that it is bound to hurt the Dodgers in the playoffs. His effort level yesterday on the bases and for a few months in the outfield has been poor.

They can be on the bench. If you are that injured that you can not run full speed from home to second (which ultimately cost the Dodgers a run) or you can not run full speed for sixty feet or so to give yourself a chance to catch a fly ball or chase a ball in the gap then I would suggest that the cost-benefit analysis of playing an injured Teoscar may need to be re-evaluated. Maybe his lack of effort is due to his injury and he is being told to pick his spots. Then maybe it is his judgment on when to sprint and when to not risk it that needs to be addressed. Your point is well taken, though.

I agree with Scott. Once Edman comes back, he should take over a SS and have Betts move to RF. Hernandez to LF. I know he likes RF, but hey, I’d like to play RF for the Dodgers as well. Doesn’t mean I should. Once Kim is back he can be the extra LHB and then get rid of Conforto.

I’d also sign Urshela and DFA Kennedy.
