While Josh Bell, Dustin May, Ha-Seong Kim, Lane Thomas, Adolis Garcia, Steven Matz, and Christopher Morel signed, eight of the top ten free agents are still not signed. The two that signed were a SP (Dylan Cease) and DH (Kyle Schwarber). Schwarber stayed with Philadelphia, so only Cease joined a new team (Toronto) from the top 10.
Munetaka Murakami must sign by Monday or go back to Japan.
That leaves OF Kyle Tucker, SS Bo Bichette, 3B Alex Bregman, , RHSP Framber Valdez, RHSP, Tatsuya Imai, OF Cody Bellinger, LHSP Ranger Suarez.
My guess is that Bellinger will not sign until Tucker signs to set the market. Scott Boras has no problem setting the market with a clear leader, and Dylan Cease was considered the best SP free agent. Boras is Bellinger’s agent, and unless someone gives him an offer too good to turn down, I cannot see Boras getting him signed. I am sure that Bellinger has his market poised to pounce once Tucker is signed, and a clear dollar and term comes into focus. Belli has many more teams that are in consideration over Tucker.
I think most teams are backing off the exorbitant terms that were reported early on in the process for Tucker. He may still sign the largest contract of the year, but it will not be $467MM that some were predicting. The interested teams are dwindling. Some have speculated that only 2 remain (Toronto and LAD). I cannot believe the Mets or Yankees will not ask to be contacted for a final offer. Although I do believe that NYY wants to re-sign Belli.
Does Tucker need to get his ego in check and make a decision? He is not worth Mookie $$$. He is not worth Fernando Tatis Jr. $$$. Toronto has the $$$ to sign Tucker, but I am not sure they want to out 10 years. It is the years that are scaring teams more today than in prior years, and more so than the $$$.
Harrison Bader is probably in the same dilemma that Belli is, but not for the same reasons. Bader’s market is probably NYY, NYM, Philadelphia, and LAD, with KC and SFG still kicking the tires.
When Philadelphia signed Adolis Garcia for $10MM, that lessened the odds of them re-signing Bader, but not completely. Phillies now have 2 RF tied to $30MM with questionable value: Garcia and Nick Castellanos. If they can unload Castellanos, Bader becomes a legit target for them. The Phillies have the lineup to hide 22 year old CF Justin Crawford, a very top prospect for Philadelphia (#3 Phillies, #54 overall).
Philadelphia is also trying to upgrade 3B, so their focus may be there rather than CF.
IMO, NYY covets Bellinger more than Bader. NYY has Trent Grisham in CF, but if they sign Bader, they can move Grisham to LF to replace or platoon with Jasson Dominguez.
I have no clue what NYM is doing. I thought they were setting up for a Kyle Tucker signing, but they seem to be rowing without a coxswain.
There is also the lack of movement for significant infielders. IMO, Toronto is waiting on learning if they are the Tucker sweepstakes winner. If Tucker signs with Toronto, the Blue Jays will shift their focus to Bichette. Bichette has indicated a willingness to move off SS, which opens up the number of his suitors.
Atlanta could be in play with Bichette. Atlanta has been looking to replace Ozzie Albies at 2B for a few seasons now. Boston is another serious contender for Bichette. However, Boston is rumored to be negotiating with all infielder FAs.
Alex Bregman is also coveted by Boston. There is mutual interest there. Detroit is another team very much involved in the Bregman negotiations. The Cubs are pushing hard to sign Bregman. They lost Tucker and they are not convinced that Matt Shaw is the 3B they need to contend.
While relief pitchers are flying off the boards, there is a noticeable lull in signing starting pitching FAs. Dylan Cease is signed and at a hefty $210MM 7 year deal with deferrals, dropping the present value of the contract to $187.25MM. Once he was signed, it is unclear as to why the next group of FA starting pitchers are still in the wings. Framber Valdez, Tatsuya Imai, Ranger Suarez, Michael King, and Zac Gallen comprise the next tier. IMO, years might be an obstacle for these pitchers.
There are two catchers in the top 50: JT Realmuto and Victor Caratini. The Mariners just signed their backup to Cal Raleigh, Andrew Knizner. There is not much else out there.
The Dodgers have re-signed Miggy Ro and have signed Edwin Díaz. A very unheralded MiLB signing that could pay dividends is RHP Nick Frasso. Frasso had a tough year coming back from shoulder surgery, but could return to that top prospect level after a year of getting that shoulder working again. He is still listed as a starter, but he was being moved to the bullpen late last year, and that figures to be where he will be placed this year at OKC. Shoulder surgeries quite often take a long time to recover, which makes Gavin Stone’s return nebulous.
So we wait to see when the next shoe drops. Once Tucker signs, I think you will see a lot more movement. Murakami should be signed before the end of the weekend. After that ????

Looking forward to whatever unclogs the market.
Jim Bowden said he believes this week things will start happening.
Jim Bowden is good at analyzing teams and players, predicting?….not so good.
Tucker is waiting for his big contract which no one seems to want to offer
Tucker will sign by Friday or a trade for Duran will be announced early next week.
“a trade for Duran will be announced early next week.”
That’ll work. Who they sending out?
I think Tucker may be among the last to sign.
You forgot Diaz
Díaz was not a top ten free agent. I use the MLBTR list. He was #13. I could have gone top 15 or top 20, but I kept it to the top ten. BTW, 5 of top 15 signed, including Día, and 8 of top 20, and 20 of top 50.
My bad, I thought he was……oopsie.
You forgot Alonso too…. a bigger deal than Schwarber since he left the Mets for the O’s.
Alonso got a slightly bigger contract than Schwarber. If he ain’t Top Ten, the MLBTR list is just stupid.
The AL East is loaded…. and the NL West is not looking good beyond the Dodgers…
There’s a lot of silence in the market right now. I think the Mets are about to do something big.
They certainly should…
I wonder how the Ketel Marte trade market affects the FA market. He’d fit a lot of teams and would provide similar punch to Bregman and Bichette.
Buxton seems likely to stay with the Twins, but I can imagine AF having some talks to try to keep the option open if other avenues don’t work out.
No trade clause, sure, but I assume that Buxton would welcome the chance to earn a ring.
Seattle likes to trade
Marte projects slightly higher than Bichette for ‘26 but he’s on the upside of 30. I wonder if the Dodgers are in on either.
I too think Buxton stays. The more I think about Duran, a local kid, the more I like the idea. Is he really available? If so, some team will empty the cupboard to get him.
I can’t get the trade simulator to work for me. Too early?
Emmett Sheehan, Zahir Hope, Jackson Ferris for Jarren Duran.
Am I in the ballpark? Maybe Hyeseong Kim in there somewhere? Doesn’t appear the Dodgers are going to use him.
Sheehan, Hope, and Ferris is a massive overpay per the trade simulator. The threesome is worth 80.6, while Duran is worth 45.9. Sheehan or Hope, not both would work with Ferris per the trade simulator. Kim is worth 0.8 in the simulator. So he is a throw in.
A big hard No from me! Way too muchfor Duran. Rather sign Bader.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would riot
Riot? Big hard NO?
Guess I value a 28 year old 5 WAR everyday center fielder more than you guys do.
Bader works, but he’s older and he’s no Duran.
In my uneducated opinion, that’s an overpay for Duran.
Ok. Who do add and subtract from the offer?
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report proposed a 3 way trade with Washington and Tampa Bay where we get Brandon Lowe for a year and Griffon Jax and giving up Copen and Hope. Eventually sliding Edman to CF when healthy. What do you think?
Don’t know much about Jax. Lowe is a FA after the season. Probably a fair price though I wouldn’t like it. Why deal prospects when you have the green stuff.
Had to look up Griffin Jax. 31 year old reliever with a 4+ ERA. Must have a strike out pitch as his K/9 is 12.2. And Lowe? Some slug but a negative 1.1 dWAR.
As for that other shoe to drop? I’m looking for a boot, not a slipper.
Rec
What does that mean?
Get with the lingo old man
I like your comment
Oh. Thanks.
I finally found a trade simulator that works for me. Emmett Sheehan, Josue De Paula and a low level door prize is an even trade. Make it uneven and it could happen.
Anyone else?
If we’re going to use the Trade Simulator, I much prefer giving them Rushing and either Ferris or Kyle Hurt.
That works as far as the simulator is concerned although I don’t know if it works as far as the Sox are concerned.
The rush on relievers continues. 6 relievers and 1 starter came off the board the last 2 days. The Giants made a sneaky good sign with RHSP, Adrian Houser – 2 years $22MM with a club option for 2028. The six relievers:
· RHRP Luke Weaver – Mets, 2 years, $22MM
· RHRP Brad Keller – Phillies, 2 years, $22MM
· LHRP Drew Pomeranz – LAA, 1 year, $4MM
· Jordan Romano – LAA, 1 year, $2MM
· RHRP Chris Martin – Rangers, 1 year, no financial terms
· LHRP Caleb Ferguson – Reds, 1 year, no financial terms
Not bad for an inning every other game!
Luke Weaver leaving the Yankees for the Mets.
Seems like there’s been a lot of NYY/NYM back and forth lately.
I guess that means Belli is going to be a Met.
Checked the dashboard and found that the recent posts were listed as drafts. So I went ahead and republished them. No big news yet. Murakami decision coming soon.
