What’s In A Trade

A couple days back Badger commented: “It has been suggested in a few places that July bidding will be higher than January bidding.”

Two different types of bidding.  As 4-Gens commented, trades in the Winter center on MLB talent, or at the very least MLB ready elite prospect talent.  Outside of Emmet Sheehan and Dalton Rushing, the Dodgers do not have that.  Very rarely do you see multiple AA, A, and rookie league prospects packaged for a top MLB player in the Winter.  Few teams are going to admit they are not at least going into the season with the thought of contending.

At the deadline, the opposite is true.  Very rarely do you see top scale MLB for top scale MLB players exchanged, but you do see the multiple prospect packages for a difference making MLB player from a team out of the playoff picture.

Of course this is not absolute.  Just this year, as Duke brought up, Tampa Bay traded RHSP Shane Baz for four prospects and a competitive balance pick.  Duke referred to the prospects as non-elite, and I guess that is true, but all four are top 20 prospects in Tampa Bay’s system.  So define elite?

Tampa Bay is in a rebuild process and prospects have more value than a couple low level MLB players to the Rays.

On Wednesday, the Marlins traded RHSP Edward Cabrera to the Cubs for their #2 prospect (OF Owen Caissie), their #16 prospect (SS Christian Hernandez), and an 18 year old lottery ticket from the Dominican Republic.  Cabrera is talented, but has a very gimpy elbow that should have the Cubs concerned.  Caissie is the player that Miami wanted, and they had pitching to spare.  This could backfire on the Cubs as Caissie was slated to be the RF this year for them. Now who goes out there?  I suppose Seiya Suzuki???  Caissie now gives Miami a plus OF with Kyle Stowers in LF, Jakob Marsee in CF, and Caissie in RF.  That could be a better OF than LAD.  Plus Caissie is a MLB ready OF that falls within my definition of winter trade candidates.

Bottom line is that just because the Dodgers may want a certain player, there has to be a match from the other team.  What if that team does not need someone from where the Dodgers’ strength lies?

How eager are the Dodgers to trade Dalton Rushing?  Some have suggested that AF’s reluctance to trade Rushing was likely the stumbling block as to why the Dodgers did not acquire Steven Kwan last year.

Rushing has not yet established himself as a MLB starting catcher, so his value is probably diminished a bit at this time.  I also believe that when Ben Rortvedt was considered the backup catcher to Will Smith in the playoffs, that also potentially put a dent into his trade value.  His 37.4% K rate is probably not all that enticing either.

I do believe that Rushing can be a good MLB catcher, but it has to be the right team that will need him.  Looking at teams with potential OF help to trade to the Dodgers, the names most often mentioned as possible trades are Steven Kwan, Jarren Duran, Byron Buxton, and Brendan Donovan.

Cleveland’s GM, Mike Chernoff has already said that Kwan is not likely to be traded.  They need OF, and trading their best is not in their best interests unless they get an overpay.  AF does not do overpays.  I know Duke does not believe that it has to be an overpay, but we will just have to agree to disagree.

With Carlos Narváez as their starting catcher, Boston does not need Rushing.  Minnesota is probably happy with Ryan Jeffers as their regular catcher.  Rushing would go to both teams as the backup.  The teams are not going to trade Duran or Buxton with Rushing as the headliner.  Would any of you trade Andy Pages for a backup catcher?

Cleveland could use an upgrade over Bo Naylor and St. Louis could use an upgrade over Pedro Pagés.  Is Rushing an upgrade?

As stated above, Cleveland is not looking to trade Kwan.  Besides Kwan, Cleveland is starting 2 rookies in CF and RF.  Rushing alone is not going to get Kwan.  How much more would you be willing to add to get Kwan?  Cleveland is going to want an overpay.  Cleveland does not need swing pitchers or multiple innings relievers. Cleveland’s #6 SP is Parker Messick and had a good start to his MLB career last year with a quality 39.2 IP and 2.72 ERA and 2.92 FIP.  Ryan Ward is not on the Guardians’ shopping list, nor is Alex Call.

Apparently the asking price for 2 years of Brendan Donovan is very high, and that is why teams may be reluctant to trade for him. The Cardinals are clearly in a rebuild, and like Tampa Bay, prospects may be what is requested.  I doubt that AF would trade Rushing for two years of Donovan.  But prospects still in AA, A+, and A?  If AF was willing to meet St. Louis’ price it would already be done by now.  As STB has reminded us, Gomes has told us we need to be patient.  If Tucker, Bichette, Bellinger, and Bader all sign elsewhere, AF/BG could revisit Donovan.

That leaves Emmet Sheehan as the one LAD player who can bring back a difference making OF in a trade.  Upon his return from TJ surgery, Sheehan pitched 15 games (12 as a starter), and compiled 73.1 IP with a 2.82 ERA, 2.93 FIP, 0.968 WHIP, and 4.05 K/BB ratio.  As a starter he had a 5.69 K/BB ratio.

Sheehan would be a mid-rotation SP for most teams, and a top two for many.  He would be the #1 for St. Louis.  However, for LAD he is a #5/#6 SP.  The Dodgers are not about to trade 4 years of Sheehan for 2 years of Donovan.

Sheehan for Kwan?  LAD says no. Sheehan for Duran?  It would be painful, but I could see that.  Sheehan for Buxton?  The Dodgers are not trading that level of an asset for an oft injured Buxton, IMO.  Last year was the first time Buxton had 400+ PA since 2017.   Plus last year, per Fangraphs’ DRS metric, Pages was a better defensive CF.  Take that for whatever you think it is worth.

In summary, IMO, unless St. Louis comes down on the asking price for Donovan, the Dodgers are going to have to buy their big bat (Tucker, Bichette, or Bellinger, or a defensive CF (Bader), and save their prospect capital for the deadline.

“The Dodgers had baseball’s best offense through June, with a 121 wRC+ — then nosedived to 26th in the majors in July (90 wRC+) and continued to fire in fits and starts the rest of the way. The club’s offensive approach became a topic multiple times during the stretch run, including through an October patch in which the Dodgers didn’t score more than four runs in a nine-inning game after the Wild Card Series.”

The Athletic is asking similar questions to those being asked here, including is Betts off year a hiccup or sign of decline. This article also suggests it’s time for some youngsters (Ward and Kim) to be given an opportunity. They also submit maybe our starting pitching, with one starter throwing over 112 innings, isn’t deep enough.

As you know, Sheehan for Duran is a trade I would do in a heartbeat. Add Peralta and Bichette and tee it up. Go big or go home in October.

Good work here WD. Have you sent a copy of this to AF? Seems good to me with a couple minor corrections.
We’ll have to trade for Peralta since he’s not a free agent.
With that roster I think they play Andy in center rather than Tommy. Or they could decide to trade Teo.

Ah my bad – I saw we were interested in Peralta – forgot he was still with Milwaukee.

Even without him, adding Bichette and Duran would really improve us, given that we’ve already signed Diaz.

With Graterol, River Ryan, Hurt and Stone, and hopefully better years for Treinen and Scott, we would be hard to beat.

Hope you’re good STB – these are the slow Baseball days, waiting for things to happen.
I believe AF will do something – he saw what we saw. We need a shot in the arm offensively, and a Threepeat would certainly cement his tenure as a “Dynasty”, plus the fact that he kinda owes Shohei a significant signing as good will for the huge Deferrals. Sounds like he made him a promise when he signed of a commitment to compete every year.

Can’t wait to get back to it.

Things seem even slower than usual this off season but I guess I say that every year.

The next couple of weeks should be pretty busy.

If it was up to me I would not trade Sheehan for some older veteran like Duran, Buxton , Robert jun. etc.
I like all three players but not at the cost of Sheehan. The kid played a key role in the Dodgers run to the WS title and did not nothing but impress.

I rather sign Bader to play CF.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!

Bader is a solid choice.

But Jarren Duran is younger and much better. He’s a 4+ WAR player at a position of need. I doubt Sheehan will ever be a 4+ WAR pitcher. I do that trade immediately if it were available. I kinda doubt it is

Things are going to get interesting here pretty soon. Patience is not one of my strong points right now. Our elevator has been out again for about a week and we still do not know when it will be fixed.

Your elevator? What floor do you live on?

3rd of a 3-story building. I talked to the manager yesterday when I signed my recertification papers. Right now, there seems to be a problem with one of the circuit breakers. They are working on that, but the owners of the building, Volunteers of America, know the elevator needs to be rebuilt. They are waiting for the proposal from Otis Elevator to be submitted. Same company Furillo worked for in New York after he retired. It looks like it is going to cost around 150,000 to do. Takes about 9 months after they receive the proposal to be approved. Then the work takes about 3 weeks. Once they fix the electrical, it should be ok until the rebuild.

At the top of the “flirting with disaster” list is the New York Yankees. What to do? “If not Bellinger, then perhaps Kyle Tucker or Bo Bichette. And after whiffing on Cabrera, it should be Freddy Peralta-or-bust on the pitching front.”

Obviously they’ve got the money. Do they have the ownership willing to spend it.

Also at the top of list is Boston, Mets, Cubs and San Diego.

DH. Ohtani
SS. Betts
1B. Freeman
C. Smith
3B. Muncy
LF. Teo
2B. Edman/Rojas
RF. Pages
CF. Call/Edman

Fasttrack Sirota for CF so that he can be in CF ASAP.

Maybe trade for Hoerner if Cubs sign Bregman or Bichette and make him available. Glasnow for Hoerner?

After announcing that they aren’t trading Glasnow and reassuring him of that, you think they would traded him for one year of Hoerner?

Bumsrap

They traded for Glasnow when he was a 1 year rental and then extended him. It’s not a stretch to think to trade for Hoerner and then extending him.

Did they tell Glasnow that they were not shopping him or that there were no circumstances where he would be traded?

I toss a name like some spend someone else’s money. I’m posting here because it’s raining, otherwise I would be playing golf instead.

I think they sign someone instead of trading for Hoerner. Cost is going to be high for that guy. Cubs do not have a replacement in place. LA is loaded with infielders.

If we’re loaded with infielders why would we need Bichette?

I don’t think that deal would be done, I just meant to say I would do it.

Anthony Banda is the lone holdout in arbitration. Stewart settled for 1.3 and Call 1.6. Vesia’s option was picked up and Graterol agreed to 2.8 yesterday. Pirates made O’Hearn signing official. Phillies have a meeting scheduled with Bo Bichette.

They’ve settled with Banda also (1.625 mil), so we’re good to go. Nobody goes to arbitration.

Phillies to meet with Bichette. Uh oh I didn’t want to see the Phillies get involved with Bichette. Bellinger to NY, Bregman to Bosox, then we pick up whoever, between Bichette, and Tucker, that Toronto doesn’t sign.
that was my little fantasy.

Skubal and the Tigers exchanged arbitration numbers and he may be a little closer to Chavez Ravine tonight (for those of you who want to see him in blue).

Skubal wants 32 million.
Tigers offered 19 million.
There are going to be some hard feelings there.

As for me, I’m not interested in Mr. Skubal because of his two major arm surgeries.

I’ll take Skenes, please. No surgeries and 4 years of control vs. 1 for Skubal.

My offer (are you listening Bums?)
Sasaki
Rushing
DePaula or Hope
Henriquez
Lindsey or Joendry Vargas

After I dreamt this up, I went to the Simulator and it told me I was almost perfect in valuation.

Any takers?

Ok. I’ll bite.

Pirates won’t.

Agree about Skubal and his surgeries. It would be fun for a while maybe, but history says he’s likely to blow.

Seems like it, but I was reading that pitchers don’t get near as much as hitters in arbitration, the record for a pitcher is $19,750,000. They could have at least offered him $20 mil and claimed they were setting a pitching record.
BTW Soto got $31mil in his last arbitration, big difference.
