Although not official yet, the Dodgers signed Kyle Tucker to a huge 4-year contract. Tucker fills a need for a solid offensive and defensive outfielder. It also allows the Dodgers to move Teo to left field, where he did a decent job in 2024. Teo also should be well over the groin injury he suffered last season that severely affected his offense. It looks like Andy Pages will stay in left.
They also signed Edwin Diaz to be their closer, this on the heels of signing Tanner Scott to a 4-year deal last season. Together, Diaz and Scott will make 33 million next season. Both have money deferred. Diaz, 13.5 mil and Scott, 5.25 mil. Both also have team friendly options in 29 if not traded. Now there are rumors that they have been looking to trade for Brewers SP, Freddy Peralta.
With the rotation and the bullpen pretty set, it seems about the only real dilemma is deciding who hits where and who plays second base because at this point, we know who all the other starters are. What this seems to portend is the kids, Freeland, Siani, Ward, being left out in the cold. With the team needing a roster spot, Ward, who has never been given a real shot at playing in the majors, might end up being the odd man out.
Do the Dodgers need Peralta? Well, he makes a very strong rotation stronger. The cost in the winter would not be as high as if they tried to trade for him at the deadline. But he won’t be totally cheap either. I would venture a guess that at least on MLB ready pitcher, an MLB ready position player and a good prospect, not necessarily a #1, but in LA’s top 10 would be the cost.
With Edman probably out until late May, Kim and Rojas will likely get most of the time at second. I just do not see Freeland cracking the roster unless he goes bonkers in spring. Kim has a leg up on him with 71 MLB games under his belt and his ability to also play CF. Siani probably starts the year in OKC as their primary CF. The bench looks to be, Call, Rojas, Rushing and Ibanez. Ibanez got an MLB deal, so I believe he makes the 26-man.
Many fans want the Dodgers to bring back Kike. He will be out until at least late May after his surgery. In all fairness, his injury was probably the main cause of his offensive struggles last season. A .203 BA does not inspire awe. He played well in the playoffs and never let it impact his defense, but in the World Series, he struck out 15 times, 4 more than Muncy and 5 more than Teo. Toronto only had 1 player in double digits, Giminez. I love the guy, but he has 2 things going against him, age, and the fact that the Dodgers are loaded with middle infielders who play multiple positions. He would be a very redundant piece.
I have to believe that from now until spring training, AF and Gomes are going to concentrate on filling the AAA roster with players with experience like they did signing Nick Robertson last week. There are at this point in time just 17 players on the OKC roster. David Bote is listed on the roster but is on the restricted list. That goes back to last season. Another player on that roster is Nick Senzel, another multilocational player. He is currently playing in the Mexican Winter League and hitting .531.
Barring a trade for Peralta, I think the front office is through adding to the 40-man. Peralta seems to me like the last piece they are chasing. But they still need body’s for AAA OKC, so it will be interesting to see what kind of players they look for. They are thin on catchers with MLB experience, and Rushing has played just 53 games in his career so far. But I think he is ticketed to back up Freeman on occasion. Whatever they do, fans will be paying close attention.

BREAKING NEWS: White Sox are trading Luis Robert Jr/ to the Mets for Luisangel Acuna and minor league RHP, Truman Pauley per Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Mets did not give up much for Robert jun. At this price I would have loved the Dodgers to get the guy. Or Buxton. Or Duran. Looking at this trade the perceived cost for the Dodgers in potential trades for these guys IMHO was exaggerated
I do not want Peralta. No need to give up the farm for him. I rather go with Sheehan.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Harold Reynolds says Chicago did better than NY
A. Peralta is not going to cost you the farm, maybe one MLB ready pitcher. B. Maybe, just maybe, the front office looks at Robert Jr. and his injury history a lot differently than fans do. C. Buxton is not getting traded and if he was, he WOULD cost the farm. D. Red Sox at this point in time not interested in moving any of their outfielders, Duran is not a need.
A.
You wrote:I would venture a guess that at least on MLB ready pitcher, an MLB ready position player and a good prospect, not necessarily a #1, but in LA’s top 10 would be the cost.
That is a LOT, maybe not the farm, but a LOT. Especially for a one year rental on a position we do not need someone and have someone inSheehan who might be just as good as Peralta if not better.
B.
I only said that the cost for the Mets was not nearly as high as some perceived and suggsted trades the Dodgers were mentioned in a Robert jun. trade.
C.
Buxton is as at least as injury prone as Robert jun, a couple years older and similar numbers over the last few years. So why should he cost the farm ? Because the Twins want it ?
D.
Key words: At this point. RedSox have a surplus of OFs and if they want to improve their roster they will have to part with one of them.Be it Duran or another one.#
I would not be surprised if we see another surprise move by AF and he goes out and aquires a true CF, moving Pages to left and trading Teo.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Buxton is more expensive because he has a better offensive track record. His OPS+ over the last 2 seasons is 137. Hie OPS for his career is 30 points higher than Robert. Robert has posted an OPS below .700 the last two seasons. His OPS+ has been below 100 the last two years. Buxton is 32, Robert 28. Both have played 100 games or more just 3 times in their careers. So, both have problems staying on the field. Buxton is more than Robert’s equal on defense. The biggest difference is that Buxton is far and away the Twins best player. He is their star and the center piece of their offense. Robert is coming off of two bad offensive seasons. His trade value had dipped considerably. As for getting Duran, the Dodgers don’t need Duran. Although he can play center, and is very good out there, he doesn’t bring the offense Pages does. The only difference is he is a lefty. If they got Duran even trading Teo, then left field becomes a trouble spot again. Pages was worse out in left last year than Teo was in right. Tucker is playing right period. He also has not played well defensively when he has played left.
Where was it mentioned Edman out until late May? That very well maybe accurate I just don’t know that I’ve seen that reported anywhere.
I know he didn’t get out of the walking boot until around Thanksgiving but late May seems a bit long assuming there are no setbacks.
It was mentioned prior to his having the waling boot off. There is an update saying he should be ready to go by spring training. The thought behind the post is that over the last several years, the Dodgers have carefully monitored players rehabbing from surgery and typically slow played them. If Edman is 100%, he will probably be the starting second baseman when the season opens.
Ryan Fitzgerald was not claimed and was outrighted by the Dodgers to OKC where he will no doubt be roster depth. LA still needs to make an adjustment to the 40-man once the Tucker signing is official. Bichette signing by the Mets is now official. And I saw a report tonight on Yahoo Sports that Bellinger is expected to make his choice in the next couple of days.
With Milwaukee allegedly saying they don’t think they will be able to keep Peralta past ‘26 the price for him won’t be the farm, Sheehan and atop prospect might get it done. But is Sheehan ready to produce at a mid rotation level making Peralta unnecessary?
The Brewers are good enough to challenge. I don’t see them trading a top starter at this point
Fangraphs lists 3 catchers at AAA. Alfonzo, Robinson and Lockwood-Powell. All of them are 26 or older so it would appear they have years of experience. Don’t know if they can hit ML pitching but in an emergency does that matter?
The Mets lineup looks better but I read their pitching is a mixed bag. At this way too early for predictions point I see the Phillies, Brewers, Mets as the teams most likely to challenge.
Sure would like to see the Tucker signing completed.
Probably completed after they decide on their 40.
Siani and Ward are the most vulnerable to a move. With Ward slightly at more risk.
Great piece, Bear. Agree with everything you say. After Diaz & Tucker, definitely margin time. I still expect a surprising trade of a reliever for a couple prospects. It’s the AF way.
Thanks, much appreciated.
The only move I don’t quite understand is Ibanez. Even though he has a contract and roster spot I don’t consider him a shoo-in for an opening day job.
Insurance. Kike is not going to be ready until May. Ibanez is a glove first guy. Late inning defensive replacement.
I think im done with keekay
So am I
It is probably time to move on. However I won’t be surprised if the Dodgers bring him back.
I wouldn’t either but let’s not let sentimentality play into it. Kike has had some great playoff moments, most memorable being his 3-homer game in the 7th game of the LCS in 2017. Granted, his defensive play in the 9th of game 6 of the Series against the Jays helped win the game and send them to game 7. But his overall World Series performances, especially on offense, are not that good. In 29 games he has hit just .202 with 28 Ks. He has 16 post season homers but 5 of those came with the Red Sox in 21 when he had his best post season stretch ever. 2 of his 11 homers have been hit in the World Series, one in 18 in the losing cause to the Sox and one last year.
No problem. If he does not perform the Dodgers DFA him. Or trade him for a bag of balls.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RedSox have signed Rangers Suarez, 5 years 130 million.
They really load up on pitching.
NL West and AL East are two tough divisions.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Dodgers should win the West with ease…
Bellinger back to the Yankees on a five-year deal. Former Dodger, Luis Garcia signed with the Mets.
Kyle Tucker press conference happening now.
He will wear #23
Appropriate. Gibby’s number/ Hope he puts up better numbers than they guy who wore it last.
Who was that?
.

Claude Osteen 1965-73 Don Zimmer 1954-59
Siani draws the short straw.
Ryan Ward is still a prisoner.
A little surprising unless they believe Siani will make it through waivers.
Since it was pretty obvious that Tucker was not going to get #30, he opted for 23 as a tribute to his mentor, Micheal Brantley.
Freddy Peralta and Tobias Myers to the Mets.
Sproat and Jett Williams to the Brewers.
Mets have actually had a pretty good off season.
Kudos to the Mets.
Now it’s more likely that Skubal becomes a Dodger….
Now he would cost a lot. A lot more than Peralta for sure.
Yep.
But the Dodgers have the depth to get him + the $$$ to keep him.
I wonder what kind of a Dodger offer would have been equal to Sproat, and Williams.
Just a guess but I would think Freeland and Ryan or Stone would be a close equivalent
More like Freeland and Sheehan.
That’s a good call
Yep…The Dodgers could have easily topped the Mets’ offer.
Why didn’t AF spend now?
Perhaps he’s just waiting for Skubal.
Williams was the Mets #3 prospect and Sproat #5 (not sure which service those ratings were from), but of course that doesn’t mean our 3 and 5 would have been equivalent.
Jeff is great at this kind of analysis. Hopefully he’ll chime in with an answer.
Jeff is traveling. He should be back on soon.
Quintero & Sirota
Ouch!!
BA put all four of the Dodgers’ top OF prospects in their top 100….
One reason the Dodgers might keep Ohtani off the bump for a while would be to showcase Stone, River Ryan and Sheehan or the midseason trade market.
As rough as Roberts jr last two seasons have been, a 3 and 5 seems like more than I thought he would bring for a return
I’m an idiot, ignore me, I got the Roberts trade mixed up with the Peralta trade.
It happens. Don’t fret over it.
I would never ignore you, Keith
😀
Twins to sign LHRP, Taylor Rodgers to a 1-year-2-milliom-dollar deal
I see where Doc is going to bat Tucker 2nd or 3rd. Tucker has a .874 OBS batting 2nd and .891 batting 3rd. Sounds like Ohtani, Betts, Tucker, 1,2,3. Keeps the L,R,L thing intact which the Dodgers seem to be high on.
Ohtani L
Betts R
Tucker L
Smith R
Freeman L
Teo R
Muncy L
Pages R
Edman/Kim S/L
I want the Dodgers to give Smith and Freeman lots of rest during the regular season. Would give Rushing more AB’s. Also play Rojas at 3B against lefties to give Muncy rest.
I like your idea about Smith and Freddie getting more days off
As O.D. points out, this would also help give Rushing more playing time.
Win-Win.
I’d like to see LA slow play Ohtani on the mound. Following last years pattern wouldn’t be bad. The Dodgers will have ten or more different players as a starting pitcher during the season. Thought Bear.
Highly possible. Last season 17 different pitchers started games including openers. The six rotation guys were Ohtani, Yamamoto, Kershaw, Glasnow, May and Sheehan. Guys with 10 or more starts. Snell 11. Sasaki started 8, Knack and Gonsolin 7. May and Gonsolin are gone to be replaced by Ryan and Stone. Stone has the best resume. This season’s schedule has several off days early, which means that most of the pitchers will get plenty of rest, and usually they rarely go more than 5 innings in those early starts. Ohtani will most likely be slotted as the #3 behind Snell and Yamamoto, with Glasnow the #4. Who follows those four is totally up for grabs with Sasaki and Sheehan with the inside track. The rest will be in AAA or long relief.
It’s going to be fun watching this team. Can’t wait. Talent galore. I can’t get over how blessed we are to be Dodger fans.
We paid our dues. 2016-2019 was brutal. 2021-2023 too.
Very true but at least made the playoffs. Had great regular seasons. Went to a World Series and got cheated. And those were our off years. The others we won championships. Many other teams can only wish they had it that good.
McKenzie Gore traded to the Rangers for 5 minor leaguers. Twins sold Vidal Brujan to the Mets. LaMonte Wade Jr. signed a minor league deal with the White Sox. Cubs signed CF, Chas McCormick to a minor league deal.
AF pretty much said that the Dodgers are through adding to the roster. Remains to be seen.
I don’t see anymore major moves coming.
Not until the Tigers put their ace on the market…
That isn’t happening anytime soon. As long as the Tigers believe they can contend, they keep Skubal.
Maybe Kike after they can put him straight to the 60 day IR so he doesn’t go against the 40 man roster
I have a post coming about Kike. Herein lies the rub with signing Kike. His in-season numbers are not that great and haven’t been for the last two seasons. Although he has had some post-season heroics, he sucked in the World Series last year, 15Ks and no walks. Yeah, he made a really good defensive play in game six, but his lone offensive contribution was a solo homer in a game they lost 5-1. He is going to be 36 during the season, and the biggest reason not to sign him, they have six guys on the roster that are a versatile as he is. Take sentimentality out of it, check his metrics, and he just does not make the team better. His biggest asset now is his energy.
Yeah i dont understand the keekay talk.
Hes an alltime great, won some rings, is not needed anymore.
If we sign him during the season fibe but if he gets another offer go for it.
Hes been our plugin LF in the playoffs and we should move off of that
Not needed anymore? You didn’t see all of those great plays in the field during the World Series run? Game 6?
Yeah, I saw it. He made some plays; he was absolutely useless at the plate. He is a redundant piece. They have plenty of guys who can do exactly what he does. He struck out 15 times; he barely ever walks and did not walk at all in the World Series. They needed him last year maybe, but they do not need him now. He won’t even be able to take the field until at least May according to all the reports. He struck out 24 times in last year’s playoff run. He walked just 4 times. He is 35 and will turn 36 during the year. His clubhouse personality is his biggest asset right now. His bat is anemic. His WAR last year was 0.1. Time to move on.
The Royals have two players listed in MLB.com’s Top Ten Catching prospects. Perhaps Ryan Ward could be flipped for one…
How loaded are the Dodgers? The MLB.com player rankings have six Dodgers in the Top 22 in the game. No. 1 is obvious. Next is Yamamoto at 13, Mookie at 18, then Smith, Tucker and Freddie at 20-22.
Snell is at 54 and Edwin Diaz at 83.
Only two shortstops are rated ahead of Mookie: Witt at 3rd overall, and Lindor at 11.
I think as long as Lindor is playing he will be the NL All Star shortstop. Fine with me. Give Mookie the time off mid season. He’s going to need it. I also kinda like De La Cruz. There’s always Trea Turner. And watch for Konnor Griffin.
Power begins with the legs pushing against the ground. Stronger squats (especially front squats) allow players to generate greater vertical and lateral force, which is essential for initiating powerful movements
Hyeseong Kim can squat 450 three times and run home to first in 4.05 seconds. He can play all 3 up the middle defensive positions. Roberts said he doesn’t yet trust him against LHP. Kim hit .381 against LHP. Roberts says he chases too much against LHP. So what? He hit .381 against LHP.
I hope Kim’s shoulder is 100%. I would love to watch his back field workouts this Spring. If I was still in Arizona I would. Not gonna happen for me.
IMHO, Roberts puts form over content.
Now that Edman won’t be ready for opening day, Kim should be given every opportunity to play the majority of games at 2b, especially early in the season.
There is no reason to pigeon hole him as just a “platoon player”.
Between Freeland and Kim, It might come down to who has the less swing and miss.
I agree. 70% of MLB pitching is right handed. If in late innings against a tough LHRP you want a better match up, put Rojas in. That’s one of the the reasons he’s still here, right?
Kim needs at bats. Give them to him.
If in late innings against a tough LHRP you want a better match up, put Rojas in for Muncy. That’s one of the the reasons he’s still here, right?
Fun Facts re Sunday’s NFC Title game (Go Rams!)
In their all-time history against each other, the Seahawks are 29-28 against the Rams.
Seattle has scored 1,223 in thosse games. LA has scored 1,222.
So you’re saying the Rams should dominate.
The point spread will much greater in Seattle’s favor after this Sunday! Seahawk blowout!
