Last season the Dodgers had the NL West’s most powerful lineup smashing 244 homers and that was with Betts and Muncy having below average seasons. They replaced Conforto’s 12 homers with Tucker, who hit 22 last year. The Dodgers were second to the Yankees who slugged 274. The closest team to LA in the NL was the Mets who hit 224. The Mets lose a major power source with Pete Alonso moving to the Orioles in free agency.
One through nine, the Dodgers have a very powerful lineup, but depending on who gets the second base job, there is not much power in the eight and nine slots. The Yankees had 10 players hit homers in double figures last season. Ryan McMahon, who played in just 54 games with New York after his trade from the Rockies, hit only 4. But he is another perennial double-digit hitter. Between the two teams he hit 20 for the year. Since the Yankees are returning most of their players, including Goldschmidt, I think their power numbers will be close to what they were last season.
I believe the Dodgers have the most powerful lineup in the National League. In major league baseball though? I think the Yankees will come very close to matching what they did last season. I also believe that Pages will get better, and Teo will have a bounce back season. Tucker will easily out do what they got from Conforto. Edman hit 13 homers last season. Los Angeles also had 10 players with 10 or more homers. Ohtani 55, Betts 20, Freeman 24, Smith 17, Edman 13, Teo 25, Pages 27, Muncy 19, Kike 10, and Conforto 12. Rojas had 7, Rushing 4 and Kim hit 3.
The lineup will probably look like this, Ohtani DH, Tucker RF, Betts SS, Freeman 1B, Smith C, Muncy 3B, Teo LF. Pages CF and then Kim or at this point Espinal with Rojas, Rushing, Call, and Kim on the bench. During the course of the season this will change numerous times. Kike is expected back by maybe the All-Star break, and late May to early June for Edman. If healthy, Edman would be the odds-on favorite to start at 2nd base every day.
As for the other teams, five teams in the NL hit 200 or more homers in 25: Dodgers, D-Backs, Mets, Cubs and the Phillies. Arizona had the most doubles and triples. No team had an OPS higher than the Dodgers .768. The Cubs, D-Backs, Mets and Phillies were all .750 or higher. LA also led the league in total bases with 2415. Looking around the West, the Giants no longer have Yastrzemski, Flores, Dom Smith, from their starting lineup. They have been replaced by Bryce Eldridge, Luis Arraez, and Casey Schmitt.
Arizona lost 47 homers with the trades of Josh Naylor to the Mariners, and Eugenio Suarez, who is now with the Reds. They have been replaced with Carlos Santana, who is 40 years old and not an everyday player anymore and Nolan Arenado, whose defense is still elite, but he hasn’t had a good year offensively since 2022. Doubtful those two rake like Naylor and Suarez. Considering where they play, it is a little surprising the San Diego did not hit more homers.
They have some guys with plenty of power, yet they had the third lowest total homers in the National League. Only the Pirates, 117 and Cardinals, 148 hit less homers than the Padres, 152. Conversely, the Padres struck out less than any other team 1161 to the next least, 1247 posted by the Marlins. The Rockies hit just 160 homers even though they play 81 games at high altitude. The Giants, who play in a huge ballpark, hit 173. They do have an infield that has 20 plus homer power at three of the four positions.
Even though the Phillies hit over 200 homers, they had just two players, Harper and Schwarber slug 20 or more. The Mets had four players with 20 plus, two of them are with new teams, Nimmo to the Rangers in a trade, and Alonso to the Orioles as a free agent. They have added Bo Bichette, who will play 3rd, and Luis Robert Jr, both are capable of 30 plus power. Robert Jr. has a injury history, so it will be interesting to see how he performs in New York.
The powers in the Central will be the Brewers and the Cubs. The Brewers have two players who had more than 20 homers last year, Yelich and Chourio. Besides those two, Contreras, the catcher, and Andrew Vaughn have some serious power. Their strength is their pitching. In Chicago they have three players, Busch, Crow-Armstrong and Suzuki who hit 30 or more last year. Tucker is now a Dodger, replaced in right by Suzuki. Happ, their left fielder hit 23. Their newest addition is 3rd baseman, Alex Bregman, who hit 18 last year in Boston, but who has hit as many as 41 when he was in Houston. He will love the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.
Overall, the Dodgers have exceptional power in their lineup. They should be the leader or close to leading the NL in home runs this year. They have hitters like Freeman who are also doubles machines. I have to believe they will come close to matching or surpassing the numbers they put up last year. ADDED: In checking some facts, the first 8 hitters in the Dodgers’ lineup have all had seasons of 20 or more homers. Kike, who figures to be on the bench at some point, has hit 20 or more twice.
Born June 14th, 1948, in Los Angeles California. AKA The Bear

Ohtani is good for 60+ this year
I’d be OK with 50…
By position:
DH– 50 HRs
C– 25
1B– 25
2B– 15
3B– 30
SS– 25
LF– 25
CF– 30
RF– 30
This could be conservative.
Is the 15 from second base cumulative of all the players who will man the position? Edman hit 13 by himself in limited time last season.
Looks conservative.
As long as Tucker is in the postseason lineup and a threat.
We were one short last WS
Still trying to figure Doc’s reasoning for batting Tucker second. Ohtani, Betts, Freeman, Smith, Tucker, Teo, Muncie, Pages, 2nd base makes more sense to me. Would be the most balanced lineup in MLB.
Play your best players earliest. Simple as that.
Freeland running out of time to impress. After leading the game 7-2, LA lost 11-7. A’s SS DeVries impressive player.
Should the Dodgers trade Ryan Ward so he can have a shot with another organization? I believe so. He has slipped down on the depth chart for sure and is behind guys like Tibbs III and Erhard at this point. Call cemented his case to be the #4 yesterday.
Bear, I totally agree with you on trading Ward. He has no future in the organization. That was proven last year when he never got a shot while Conforto stunk up the joint for 2/3 of the season.
I have a suggestion to solve the 2nd base log jam for now. I will predictably suggest Miggy Ro start there and play regularly, platooning with whomever rises to the top as time passes: Edman, Kim, Freeland, Kike ?????
Trade? Maybe. I think the right thing is to ask him what he wants. He may prefer free agency. If so, give it to him.
I think Call has always been the #4. He can play all three positions and defensively he may better in center than Pages. From what I’ve seen we still need a better 8.
Call has always been the 4th OF. Spring training results didn’t change that.
Sure but he likely has no value. He’s been Rule 5 exposed twice, I think, and nobody has bitten.
Other teams have shown no interest in Ward. It’s why I’ve never understood the Ward bandwagon. For better or worse he’s a AAAA player.
He was sent down today along with Kopp to AAA. So much for the trade idea. AAA outfielders now Ward, Suwinski and a cast of thousands.
Ward will probably play 1B in OKC. Siani will be down there. It has already been reported that Tibbs III will be in OKC, and I see no reason for Ehrhard to go back to AA.
Ward was optioned, Siani has one last option year, Suwinski was outrighted, meaning he cleared waivers. The players have no control, but I agree with Badger…ask Ward what he wants. They basically took that option away from him when they put Ward on the 40 man.
I do not know where the Japanese or Korean teams are in regard to the number of US players on their rosters. The NPB can have a max of 4 foreign players on their roster, while the KBO can have a maximum of 3 foreign players. But the NPB or KBO seem like a logical move for Ward.
Dodgers should do the right thing and give Ward his unconditional release so he can pursue other avenues. I have thought in the past that Japan or Korea would be a good move for Ward. He is going nowhere with the Dodgers and has no trade value.
Tibbs & Ehrhard will be the two best OFers in OKC
Siani and Sirota will be on the AAA roster. Tibbs and Erhard both probably ticketed for AA.
Uh, might want to research this one a bit then try again.
No research needed. I am wrong a lot.
Sirota has a total of 270 professional PA with 155 at A+. He has not played AA while Tibbs III and Ehrhard have a good deal of AA positive experience. When have the Dodgers ever pushed a prospect that fast? I do not remember if it was Gomes or AF, but one of them said that Tibbs III will start at AAA.
It was recently reported that In a farm system loaded with outfield talent, Tibbs III could be the first to break into the big leagues. Per Doc “He’s on our radar,” after Tibbs III belted a 458-foot home run, in a left-on-left matchup no less, for what has been his biggest highlight so far in camp. “I wouldn’t be surprised at all if, at some point this year, he makes his debut.”
Sirota has 2 ST PA. Ehrhard leads the team in PA with 38, and Tibbs III is 3rd with 36.
Hyeseong Kim injured his left hand on a slide into 2B in Korea’s win over Chinese Taipei. He was held out of the win against Australia. Up to then, Kim went 1-for-10 with two walks, three RBIs and one home run.
I imagine the Dodgers already know the extent of the injury, but we will have to wait and see how severe the injury is.
Stoopid WBC
Said the same thing myself when Hanley Ramirez went down in 2013.
Starting Lineup vs Brewers
2B – Alex Freeland
LF – Teoscar Hernández
3B – Max Muncy
DH – Nick Senzel
C – Dalton Rushing
RF – Zach Ehrhard
1B – James Tibbs III
SS – Noah Miller
CF – Michael Siani
P – Emmet Sheehan
Both Ryan brothers, River and Ryder, are scheduled to pitch today, as is Tanner Scott and non-roster invitee Antoine Kelly.
Non-roster invitees Ryan Fitzgerald, Zyhir Hope, and Seby Zavala are all active on Monday.
Sheehan’s greatest attribute is his command. Not quite there yet. He seems to be overthrowing his fast ball. But I love the guy.
I think I’m officially putting Sheehan & Ryan with Wrobo on the “above Sasaki” cut line for the rotation.
Freeland 0-3 again today. Max has 2 hits.
Thus far, the Dodgers have been less than stellar with the pitch challenge. Through Sunday, the Dodgers have challenged 24 pitch calls this spring, and have only won five of those challenges (20.8 percent). MLB-wide this spring, 52.4 percent of all calls have been overturned.
3-9 when catchers/pitchers challenge and 2-10 when batters challenge. Draw your own conclusions. Rushing is now 2-5. He is 2-3 as a catcher and 0-2 as a batter. His first two challenges were wins, and he is 0-5 since.
Eliézer Alfonzo is 1-5. He is 1-3 as a catcher, and 0-2 as a batter. Smith and GLP are 0-1 as a catcher.
