Game Summary: This game was won by the pitchers. Yamamoto pitched a gem for 6.1 innings allowing just a homer by Soto. The bullpen except for a couple of walks also was excellent until the 9th when Blake Treinen gave up 3 hits and a run. He loaded the bases and struck out Volpe. Vesia came in and Trevino PH for Wells and flied out on the first pitch to end it. The offense did not do much after the third inning when they scored 3. The did hit 3 homers, with Teo’s three-run shot the big blow. NOTE: As news of the extent of Ohtani’s injury is reported, I will update this post. LA heads to NY up 2-0.
UPDATE ON OHTANI
Postgame Roberts said that Ohtani after the game had range of motion and good strength in his left arm. He also said there would be imaging tomorrow. Felt this was good news. Explained on MLBTR as a shoulder subluxation, or partial dislocation. They expect Ohtani to be back in the lineup for game 3.
I mean the whole season goes by and the Dodgers don’t have one hot streak, but the playoffs begin and their on one.
Let’s hope it lasts two more games.
Let’s also hope there’s good news on Ohtani.

Hope Ohtani is OK. If he dislocated his shoulder I hope it gets put back in place and they can keep the swelling down. Right now I’m thinking that might be the best case scenario.

Treinen made it interesting. Doc has sure shown confidence in Treinen that I didn’t see all season. I’m expecting Doc popping out of his seat like a Jack-IN-The-Box a couple of times and it just didn’t happen.
But, I’m surprised that Doc stayed with Treinen instead of getting Vesia up earlier and getting him in the game before the last out. Not a criticism. Just an interesting decision. But All’s Well that Ends Well
It is interesting how the “closer” role has changed for the Dodgers. There isn’t one. Instead of the traditional pitcher, by what inning it is, the new strategy, is no matter the inning, the pitcher matches the hitters. It is really an advance idea but it works because THAT pitcher does his job. It’s a beautiful little chess game that is being employed as all the pieces perform.
Andy Fletcher had a good game as the HPU. He outperformed his scouting report. Nice to see him get up for a game. He missed very few pitches, all night.
Tommy Edman is a perfect contact hitter sandwiched in the line-up, although he did Go Yard. I’d enjoy a line-up with a nice mix of Contact & Slug. Like we’re doing now.
I had hoped Ohtani would attempt a steal a hitter before he did. 0 and 2 to Mookie, I’m running. In the old days you might worry about a pitch-out there, but they don’t do that anymore. Otherwise, it’s the pitch to run on, likely a chase pitch.
I’m no doctor but I hope his shoulder only popped out of socket. They can pop back in a dislocation. Big difference if it’s a dislocation vs a separation. Let’s prey for the best.
I played with a second baseman whose shoulder would pop out frequently. A dislocation. We’d pop it back in and he kept playing. Eventually, you get it repaired. That’s what happened with Bellinger. We moved him to center to keep him from diving at first and popping out his shoulder. Let’s all hope that was all it is.
The explanation was a partial dislocation. He had range of motion and strength in the arm after the game.

david, that’s not true that Bellinger’s struggles were due to his blowing his shoulder while celebrating with that stupid forearm bump deal. He had dislocations previously but that one required surgery.
Bellinger had a slow start in 2020, going 5-for-36 in his first eight games. Unlike in previous years, Bellinger was making weak contact with pitches, leading to a large number of groundouts. This was well before his tibia fracture in 2021 where Alexander started measuring reduced exit velocity. His numbers for the whole season saw a drop-off from the previous year: in 56 games of the shortened season. Bellinger hit only .239 /.789 with 12 homers. In the post season of 18 games, Belli hit .212 / .770 with 0 homers and a 33% K rate.
Bellinger’s drops in batting average was explained by his constant experimentation with his swing, which prevented him from locking into pitches the way he had the season prior.
Despite injuring his shoulder on Oct. 18, during the NLCS, Bellinger continued to play in the World Series, and he celebrated his Game 1 home run by foot-tapping his teammates rather than high-fiving them. Bellinger underwent surgery for the affected shoulder in November 2020.
He was struggling before the injury and had a good season with the Cubs after the injury.
So far this series is 1988 WS 2.0.
With the FF walk off HR, then an ace like performance by our starter the next day and now the unvertainty of our star player (fingers crossed Ohtani will be good to in Game ).
Yoshi was absolutely lights out, simply amazing how he held that potent Yankees offense to one solo HR by Soto for 6.1 innings.
Lets hope the rest of the series goes as 1988 too. Then we will have a parade end of this week.

How long can we expect to continue our mastery over Aaron Judge? Obviously, guys like Treinen and Yamamoto with their awesome curveballs keep him off base……but I don’t think Buehler has that amazing pitch. And game 4 using the bullpen is a concern because some guys will pitch that will make us hold our breaths. Sure hope Ohtani can recover from this day or rest. Glad it is 2-0 and not 1-1 with Yankees having a big 9th inning like our 10th the night before. Phew!

I wonder whether Roberts sent Shohei, or if Shohei has the license to steal on his own. He’s made a similar slide about 80 times this season so the injury is surprising.

Buehler is still “evolving” as a new pitcher returning from his 2nd TJ. Maybe he’s added some new “wrinkles” to his repertoire of pitches since his last start, ..and surprise the Yankee batters in game 3.
3 things I expect to see in Game 3:
Ohtani will be in the line-up and should be relatively fine (I have experience playing with a shoulder subluxation)
Buehler will pitch well (Buehler feeds off all the noise and hatred coming from the fans in opponents yard. I actually think he loves that negative energy and shutting up those fans)
Likely to have less runs scored by way of the HR (getting colder at night and these games will be 8:08 start times in NYC). A little more traditional scoring will probably be in order for these games.
I think the Series does not go back to LA (Dodgers will win it all on the road)
Another fun game to watch. the third inning for the Dodgers set up the team for the rest of the game. Their in season MO of scoring crooked numbers early and then nothing the rest of the game almost cost them a victory.
I will never stop bitching about this, but it drives me crazy when they pull a pitcher when that pitcher is completely shutting down a team and has a reasonable pitch count. There’s a good chance that Yamamoto might not need to pitch another game this season. What the hell are you saving him for? The postseason? Even if he needs to pitch another game he is more than capable of doing so.
With a BP game coming up, by extending a starter, it could allow the BP to save an inning or two and be better prepared for that Game 4 outing. With Phillips out and Treinen looking exhausted things might get a bit uneasy with the BP for a game or two. It will, most likely, give Honeywell and Casparius a chance to shine.
Sorry for the minor rant. Otherwise, I have been very impressed with how the team is playing in the postseason. One game there are players doing well and others not so good. The next game someone else steps up offensively. There’s not much more we could have asked for from Flaherty and Yamamoto. The BP has been almost flawless. It’s a total team effort. Top to bottom. Even Dave Roberts. Lol.
Agree on Yoshi. In the situation I too would have stayed with him . He was dealing and shoving. Showed no sign of fatigue whatsoever. Who knows if the reliever coming in has the same stuff ? In that case it worked well so Roberts is vindicated.
If Shohei should be out it would be a devastating blow to the Dodgers but just as in 88`they are well equipped to survive it and close out the series.

Yoshi went 6.1, which may be a few outs more than was planned. He threw 86 pitches, many were high leverage. That’s enough on his shoulder.
He did his job. Now it’s time for others to do theirs. And after he left, that’s exactly what happened. Now, if needed, he can do it again if necessary.

Ted, I have had to work to condition my brain to get used to the new way to manage a pitching staff. I used to be exactly like you over pulling pitchers who appear to have a lot left in the tank. I had to just resign myself and stop questioning and just accept the new reality.
The Yankee fans had the same bitch in game 1, when Cole was pulled after a 7th inning leadoff single by Teoscar. Cole, through 6 had given up 1 run, on 4 hits and was at 88 pitches. He sure looked capable of more, to me.
But not Aaron Boone. He went to Holmes. Had I seen Cole out, I would have been running to the bat-rack.
Boone also was questioned critically about going with Nestor Cortez.
Moral of that story is don’t make a pitching change, that doesn’t work.
I now watch all these moves unconditionally, but I keep a thought in mind of how it would have gone when the Skipper came out to pull Bob Gibson at 88 pitches and a 4 hitter going.

I agree, the series is not over. But there is no correlation between the 2024 World Series and the ’78 and ’81 series anymore than the ’88 World Series, or the ’63 WS, a LAD sweep. Or the 1965 or 1966 World Series. What happened in prior World Series has zero correlation to the current year.

Trienen’s slider is still breaking like The Wedge. Judge can’t hit it. Stanton can’t hit. Don’t pitch him back to back days and I think he might be ok.

Yes, in the event another pitcher is injured, Phillips could return. He is experiencing fatigue and arm tightness. But AF said they would not put him in a position to injure his arm further. He has gotten better. If someone goes down, he and Joe Kelly are possibilities to replace an injured pitcher.

Roberts said Ohtani trying to steal with 2 outs was the right play, and he slides like that all the time, so this was a fluke. Besides, they were only up three and as we have seen already in the playoffs, they have the same ability to score in bunches that the Dodgers do. Rather be up 2-0 than go to NY 1-1.

One of the first things I learned about sliding was hands in the air. And I did it that way until my final year of competitive ball. And we were never taught the head first slide. Too many things can go wrong.
So then the steal attempt itself wasn’t the issue, it was the wrong technique used when he slid.
Therefore, the attempt was a fine call, as he did it 63 times this year, without injuring his shoulder.
I would not have done it. And yes, it was an awkward slide.

He absolutely puts his left hand down the same way every time. I watched almost the entire last month of games. Every time he slides, he uses his left hand. Don’t shoot the messenger. Maybe he put more pressure on it on that particular slide.
I watched too Bear. He mostly drags it. But this time he came down on it. Hard. Hard enough to cause a humerus subluxation. You can bet he won’t be doing that again.
I was taught the pop up slide. The only part of the body that contacted the ground was the lower leg. The “pop up” happened when the lead foot hit the bag. I personally was never injured in 20 years of baseball sliding like this.
Me too Wally. No hands in dirt. Of course we didn’t use gloves. And the fields weren’t exactly groomed. A lot of rocks. And I do recall wearing sliding pads for the first time. Wore them every year after that too.
Guys good at sliding feet first had a number of different slides. Hook slides on either hip to get your face away from a throw, pop-up slides, take-out slides which aren’t taught or “a thing” anymore, a slide by the bag or plate and a roll-back with a hand and plain old slide where the goal was to get your back dirty. Badger’s “hands in the air”. I too never made a head first slide in my life except back to a base. You filled your fists with dirt or grabbed your batting gloves when they came into fashion. I did tear about 5 layers of skin off my knee doing pop-up slides.
Getting low on your back also prevented getting tagged out on the head on a throw up the line.
We also wore “sliding pads”. I bet those can no longer be spotted in a clubhouse
