The Dodger second was quick. Lux doubled to right, Smith popped out to second, and Edman lined into a double play, Rizzo to Volpe. In the Yankees second, Casparius struck out Rizzo. Torres flied out to Betts.

Freeman hit into what looked like a double play, Dodgers challenged, and the call was overturned. Edman scored 5-4 NY. Holmes replaces Hill. Teo flied out to left. Yankee fifth, Knack still pitching. Judge leading off gets on with an error to Edman. Chisholm walked. Stanton struck out. Rizzo flied out to Kike. Volpe flied out to Kike.

Dodger ninth, Mayza replaces Weaver for NY. Kike leading off the ninth, grounded out to SS. Taylor PH for Lux. Taylor grounded out to second. Smith lined out to center, game over. NY wins 11-4.
Game Summary
As in many of their losses, a big inning, in this case two big innings, cost them a loss. LA scored first on a 2-run shot by Freeman, who else? Casparius did a decent job for 2 innings allowing only 1 run. But in the third, veteran reliever Daniel Hudson imploded. The big blow was a grand slam by Volpe. The Dodgers cut the lead to one by scoring 2 in the top of the fifth. After that, the Yankees bullpen shut them down completely. Dodgers had 2 homers, but the Yankees hit 3, including a granny and a 3-run shot by Torres. Flaherty goes against Cole tomorrow.
Better to lose by a score like this than by 1 run. Put it in your rearview and go get them tomorrow. Max Muncy needs to find his mojo. Ohtani needs to quit swinging at pitches he could never hit. But it is just one loss. One more win and it is over.
If anyone told me before the game that Knack and Casparius would give up only 2 runs over their combined 6 innings I would have bet the farm we win this game.

Roberts would have used his bullpen differently as well. I preferred starting Knack and see where that led.

Yes ‘Bad Max’ is back. Watching center cut fastballs then just looking like he knows he is going to strike out and swinging at everything.
Well that stunk I felt like we were getting the momentum back at 4-5 but it just didn’t last. This team has been good at shrugging off bad games, so I’ve still got faith in them.

3 games to win 1, I love our chances. No pitcher is invincible, not even Cole. And they seem to do better when they see a guy a second time. Happened against the Padres when they saw Darvish, and against the Mets when they saw Manaea.
Agree, Dodgers are still pretty much in the driver seat.
But IMHO this game was a good chance to win if they used their high leverage guys. We had the lead after two and it was obvious Hudson did not have it that day. Could have brought in Banda or Brasier to put out the fire (that is where the loss of Phillipps really hurts) and then go with Knack for more bulk innings as they did.
I do fear that in todays game Cole is dealing and the Dodgers will not be in this game. Then what you do ?Burn the high leverage guys or ask CAsparius or Honey to take another one for the team and put all your eggs in Game 6 and a potential Game 7?
In the end Hudson did not execute or the Dodgers go into the 8th inning leading 4-2.

You use the high leverage guys and still lose, then you are in trouble in game 5. Game came down to Hudson’s bad inning and giving up that sixth run. What happened in the 8th did not really affect the outcome. Had they been 1 down, doubt Honeywell would have pitched.

The progress of the game will dictate Doc’s strategy. If Flaherty is competitive and we get a lead, than it’s the A-list relief pitchers. If we get down and give up crooked numbers, it would again be foolish to speed your bullets foolishly. You need to understand when to charge and when to cut your losses.

I know Roberts is loyal to his players but it’s time Muncy was stapled to the bench. He’s totally clueless at the plate. At this point Taylor would be an improvement — at least he can bunt.

I never expected to win this game although the 2-0 lead gave a bit of hope. The Dodger B list Bullpen is just that, B list. If we were serious about this game, we would have seen a serious pitching rotation. We gave our A listers another day to rest and get mentally ready for tomorrow’s match. More importantly, Shohei looks done and dusted. Can we put this away without him? Freddie certainly thinks so and so does Edman.

Hudson has been on the decline and entered the B list a while ago.
A couple of small but I feel significant things:
Volpe was out on that tag at second. As soon as he was tagged with ball secure in glove, he’s out. A secondary move after that was his head hitting the glove knocking the ball out. Nobody on the broadcast said a word about it.
Apparently that strike 3 was called a foul tip. I didn’t see it.
There was more, none of which really had an effect on the outcome. Dodgers pitching got clobbered, Dodger offense didn’t keep up.
Muncy looks lost, Ohtani still insists on chasing. Hudson and Honeywell do not belong on the roster. But on the roster they are. Hopefully we won’t see either of them again.
The home plate ump, who was supposed to be best of this unimpressive bunch, missed some crucial calls. This will continue to happen no matter who is behind the plate.

I agree with you Bum, that it was not a completed catch by Lux at second base. Contact with the runner caused the ball to be dislodged and it ejected out of the web. There is absolutely no way that nono-second Lux had the ball would or should be ruled a catch. The rule is even too liberal on catch and transfers let alone on a tag.

He tagged the hand in front of the bag, there was separation, then Volpe’s head hit the glove over the bag causing the ball to pop out.
And the infielder doesn’t need to show possession to the umpire. What is being talked about there is a fly ball being caught by a fielder.

There was a great article in the LA Times before Game 1 about Steiner and how these were the two teams he worked for. The one time I met him he was super friendly.
I had a very funny moment with him and Dick Enberg in the bathroom of the Dodger stadium press box where we were all trying to figure out how to pronounce Arruebarrena while at the urinals. That was years ago. really good guy. Speedy recovery Charlie.
Well, that turned out about the way I expected. Some good along with a couple of bad pitches lead to a lopsided result.
Casparius threw a couple of decent innings. His control wasn’t the best. He has some impressive stuff. I look forward for him to improve in the offseason and be a nice addition to the 2025 bullpen. He could, hopefully, replace Daniel Hudson who should retire. Hudson was ineffective, as he was most of the season. Hudson had no control with the placement of his pitches. I guess he got frustrated and thought, fuck it, let’s get this over with and threw a center cut FB to Volpe for a grand slam HR.
Landon Knack, also, had a good outing. He ate up four innings and kept the game close. That was spoiled by Honeywell’s disaster of an inning. It probably didn’t make any difference as the Dodgers were down by two with three outs left.
Max continues his pattern of either hot as hell or absolutely nothing with his offense. He has a record breaking series against the Padres. Now, that he’s not hitting he goes into trying to, unsuccessfully, draw a walk. He watches down the middle pitches goes by, then gets into 0-2, 1-2 counts and chases to strikeout. He’s like when a team scores double digits and then the next game nothing. Some competitive at bats would be helpful.
It’s a tough call with Ohtani and his injury badly affecting his offense. Fans are wanting to see him hit, but at what expense to the detriment to the team? He is not comfortable at the plate and is swinging at uncompetitive pitches. And this is in the leadoff spot. He is not helping the team right now. But, with only one victory needed to win the World Series I guess they stay the course.
I look for tonight’s game to be low scoring. I expect Cole will have a strong outing so that could limit the Dodger offense. How much? Well, other than Freddie’s given two run HR (lol) and quite a few slumping Dodger hitters maybe 2-3 runs.
Because the Yankees scored 11 runs in game 4 look for their offense to be somewhat quiet. Especially with Flaherty starting and the top relievers all available.
Let’s hope they can close it out tonight. I’m too damn old to have this series continue back to LA. Make it parade time!

Very stressful postseason has taken a toll on me. I have decided enough is enough.
My heart rate is way up, blood pressure too during those stressful games.
What makes this especially excruciating is that the games start at 1.10 am here in Germany. 3-4 hours every night of pure stress during a time when the body usually recovers.
With a heavy heart I have decided to skip watching the games live, maybe even all together.
Will take a sleeping pill tonight around 1ö-11 pm and probably will check only the result of the game via Bears recap next morning. Hopefully it is about a champagne party in the Dodgers clubhouse.

The other stressful thing for me is the atrocious umpiring. How many plays at first were overturned last night? And no matter who’s behind the plate it’s like having Mr. Magoo calling balls and strikes. It’s embarrassing.
The umpiring for most of the year has been awful. I am with those who say the best umps should be picked for the World Series. Too much at stake to use fringe umps. Also, a huge boost for the ABS folks. This has been laughable.

Ted, you are dead wrong about Hudson being bad most of the season. His ERA after 39 games was 1.73. His biggest bugaboo was homers. He gave up 10, but most of them in non-critical situations. He was not nearly as good in the second half. But at this point, with Phillips out, they had few options other than keeping Henriquez on the roster or activating Kelly. Hudson had 10 saves, second most on the team to Phillips. So yeah, he has not been the same guy, but their choices were limited. Would not have mattered much. Yankee pen owned them the last 4 innings. They had one K prior to the 6th inning. From the 6th to the 9th, they had 7. And hard to score runs when your 50 plus HR guy has just 2 hits so far in the series. Max is part of the problem, but not all of it. Smith, Muncy, Lux, all need to step up and play better.

They were down to two candidates, and Ellis was not one of them. Venable was. Other is Guardians bench coach, Craig Albarez, who is now the probable new man in Miami. AJ really has zero coaching experience. Since he left LA, he has worked in the Padres front office.

What I saw was the fan who was handed a ball between innings (by Profar) threw it back on the field. Nothing was throw at player.

Instead of turning to one of the top options, Dave Roberts brought Daniel Hudson into the game. The same Hudson who threw 22 pitches the night before. The same Hudson who was allowing batters to reach base at a .353 clip over his previous four games in October.
In that moment, the Dodgers should have turned to one of their reliable arms. Whether it be Michael Kopech, Ryan Brasier, Brusdar Graterol or Anthony Banda. Whoever it may be, one of those guys should have been in the game. Not Hudson.
The Dodgers using ONLY low-leverage pitchers for all of game 4 makes it safe to assume the Dodgers hierarchy already had a (mostly) punt-this-game mentality going into that game. They hoped their bats would explode against Gil to win a high-scoring contest, ..didn’t happen. Their calculations to rely on better pitching to lock down the Yankee bats in game 5 and/or 6 better work ….or else.
Dodgers are in better shape these next 2 games with Flaherty tonight, Yoshi next game (if needed), and a rested A-List BP available the next 2 games. But the offense is now worrisome, because the Yankees pitchers have the ability to shut down Muncy, Lux, and an injured Ohtani. So to win this series in 5 or 6 games, the best Dodgers pitchers must out-duel the best Yankees pitchers in low-scoring affairs. The one (hopefully) significant edge we have tonight is a more rested A-List pen compared to the Yankees best pen arms, who have been used judiciously these last 2 games.

This is what I was talking about in the last series. When you’re able to go for the kill you go for the kill. Yesterday Doc could’ve went for the kill with the high leverage relievers after the first 2 innings, but he gave up on the game when the Dodgers were ahead by using the weak relievers.
Im not giving up on this game, but yesterday Doc allowed the Yankees offense to wake up.

Didn’t like the BP game last night and the start to this game was my biggest nightmare today as I thought about the game while I golfed today. The Yankee’s offense seemed to find it last night and Muncy, Lux, Smith and Shohei have shown little this WS.
Burnes should be their # 1 target if Sasaki is not posted. Guys we know will be back, Ohtani, May, Yamamoto, Kershaw, Gonsolin, Glasnow if not needing surgery. Ryan and Stone gone for the year.

If you told me the Dodgers would be up 3-2 with only having to win one game to win the WS and would play games 6 & 7 at DS, I would have taken that in a heartbeat.
What makes me feel uneasy is our offense sans FF, Mookie and Edman. Muncy, Shohei, Smith, Lux, Teo have been terrible this WS.

I’m not a Doc hater because I give him credit when credit is due, but I will get on his case when he screws up like he did yesterday. I shouldn’t get Doc hater comments. I gave him credit for using his good relievers in whatever game that was against the Padres that turned things around. I’m giving him credit today. If the Yankees beat the Dodgers in games when Doc gives them the dodgers best then you tip your cap to the Yankees and say you beat us against our best.

So much for the strategy of giving the good relievers an extra day off to make them more effective today and giving away yesterday‘s game. 2 runs in 5.2 innings today and maybe more importantly, not giving enough length to close it out. Again when you’re able to go for the kill (yesterday) you go for the kill. And again, I’m not giving up on this game.
