Dodger Baseball

Are These Dodgers Close to a Dynasty?

The Dodgers just had an epic off-season. They added a Cy Young winner to the rotation. They signed the most sought-after Japanese player since Ohtani.  They added a power outfield bat in Conforto, added two lock down relievers to the back of the bullpen. They brought back Blake Treinen, Kershaw, Teo and Kike. They signed a Korean player who is supposed to be a superior defender.  What did they lose? Jack Flaherty, who pitched well during the season and got mixed results in the playoffs, went back to the Tigers.  They traded Gavin Lux, who righted his ship in the second half after a bad first half but still was traded. Why? Lux was injured all of 2023 after being anointed the team’s starting SS.  He was given that spot again in spring training but later moved to second because of continuing defensive struggles. Mookie was then made the starting SS.  An injury to Mookie would later cause Miguel Rojas to make the bulk of the starts at SS while Lux remained at second.

But the Dodgers felt compelled to trade Lux for minor league outfielder who hasn’t played a professional inning yet and a draft pick. Seems like slim pickings for a guy who once was the top prospect in the Dodger system. But Lux never quite reached the heights the Dodgers expected, so they traded him. In his place, they signed a Korean free agent, Hyeseong Kim. A left-handed hitting 2B/SS, who is a three-time Korean gold glove winner. The kid also hit .304 in his career in the KBL. Trading some offense for elite defense? Only time will tell. So far in spring training, Kim has impressed with his defensive skills in the drills.

Daniel Hudson and Kevin Kiermaier retired. Joe Kelly has not been re-signed, and with the arms they have already, it is doubtful Mariachi Joe returns. Several pitchers will begin the year on the IL, including Stone, Ryan, Kershaw, Hurt and Sheehan. They traded Brasier to open a spot for Kirby Yates. From the early reports, it looks like both Evan Phillips and Michael Kopech might end up on the IL also. Both are behind in the pitchers’ workouts. The Dodgers are expecting both Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May to be available.

So, with Ohtani possibly returning to the rotation in maybe late June, the Dodgers options at starting pitcher are Snell, Glasnow, Yamamoto, Miller, May, Gonsolin, Wrobleski and Grove. Kershaw is also slated for a late June, early July return. A lot of options. In contrast to other years, other than the pitchers who do not make the roster, there are few options at AAA with MLB experience.

Two players who will have a spot in the outfield no matter what, Conforto and Teo. Outman and Pages are fighting for a job. But if LA keeps Kim, Taylor, Rojas and Kike on the roster, there seems to be no room left. Betts will be at SS for now. No plans to move him back to RF. He might be better suited for second base. In the opening spring game, two non-roster players had the best day for the team, Eddie Rosario, yes, that Rosario and David Bote, who went 2-2. Rosario hit the first spring homer for LA. If he were to make the team, it would most likely be at the expense of either Outman or Pages.

The Dodgers have several players under contract for three years or more. Freeman has three more years, 81 mil with deferments left on his contract. He will be 38 when his contract is done. Would he sign for another couple of years? I think a lot depends on his health. But I also think by then, Freddie will be satisfied with his accomplishments and will most likely retire. Especially if LA wins another Championship or two. Edman signed a five-year extension. I still believe he will be the super-utility guy.

Glasnow has three more years and a mutual option. The 23-year-old Sasaki is under team control for six years if I am not mistaken. Mookie Betts has eight years left on his deal including this season. Will Smith has nine years left. His deal actually decreases after 2027. Ohtani has 9 years left on his contract. Yamamoto will be around until 2035. And then there is Blake Snell who just signed a 5-year deal. So, for the next three and possibly four years, you have Ohtani, Yamamoto, Snell, Glasnow and Sasaki at the front of your rotation. If they all stay healthy, a big if, that is a very good rotation. Definitely championship caliber.

Freeman, Betts and Ohtani plus Hernandez for the next three seasons is a pretty decent top four in the lineup. If Smith stays healthy, you have five pretty decent hitters. Three who will most likely end up in the Hall of Fame, Ohtani, Freeman and Betts. How much of an impact will the kids have over the next several years? That is the biggest question along with how the bullpen will be constructed and the bench.

Will kids like De Paula and Rushing, along with Pages, make impacts day to day? Can Outman rebound from a lost season. He began working out a week after his season ended. He has changed his swing some too. What of guys like Alex Freeland. With Mookie now at SS, will the kid even get a look? Kody Hoese is getting a little old to be considered a prospect anymore. He might be better served being traded. But with Muncy a year away from free agency, he just might get a shot if Max cannot stay healthy. It obviously looks like they have no interest in trading for Arenado.

I believe the core of this team is pretty solid, the fringe guys will either contribute or they won’t. What they do will go a long way towards what kind of season LA has in 25. But as always, the pitching will be the key. Both the pen and the starting staff.  But the question still remains, are the Dodgers close to being a dynasty? If you look at what they have accomplished in the NL West since 2013, there is no question that they have dominated the division in the regular season.

Roberts has never failed to have his team in the playoffs, and they have won the division every year except 2021. They did beat the division leading Giants in the LDS that year, then lost to the World Champion Braves in the LCS. They lost to the eventual World Champs in 2016 too, when the Cubs beat them. They should be three and one in their four World Series appearances, but since the Astros decided to cheat, they are two and two. In 2020, they had to win more post season games than any team in baseball history up to that point in time. And they had to come from down three games to one to win the NLCS against Atlanta. That Championship is legit no matter what some critics say.

It is extremely doubtful, especially with the way the game is structured now, for any team to become a dynasty. No team has repeated as Champion since the Yankees won three in a row from 98-2000. It will take great performances by the stars for the Dodgers to go back-to-back. It is surely possible, but also unlikely. Too many unknowns. Injuries played a huge role last season. We can only hope there is no repeat of that in 25. Are the Dodgers close to a dynasty? Yes, but they still have to prove it on the field.

It’s early. I’d love to know what’s happening on the back fields.

Badger

Kim is working in center field. That’s apparently happening on the back fields. And that wouldn’t be happening if the Dodgers felt comfortable about that position. They didn’t get a shortstop and they didn’t get a center fielder. Will it hurt them? I doubt it.

Must a team win championships year after year to be considered a dynasty? How about 12 straight years in the playoffs, 4 out of 12 with trips to the World Series and 2 WS wins in the last 5 years. Has any other team done that? I don’t I think I need dynasty. I’m ok with being the best team in baseball.

The first 3 games have been stinkers but I doubt anyone in the organization is worried. Except maybe Outman and Pages.

Kim working in CF is probably about replacing Taylor and Kike’ SAK one of these days.

Badger

Maybe, but right now everyone out there is a backup centerfielder.

Wrong link. Sorry. Original comment disappeared. Had to refresh to see it and by doing so, couldn’t edit.

Badger

You’re probably right, but, what about the trade?

Badger

Ok, I’ll answer my own question.

I think it’s a good deal for both teams. The Dodgers trade a utility player, not needed, with a hefty contract, not wanted, a pitcher that won’t be used much, if at all, a prospect that’s just that, a prospect, and an oft injured third baseman for an All Star in his prime.

That said, sounds like he may be going to the Cubs.

Devers is overrated and, as we now know, selfish.
There may be no I in TEAM. But with Devers, there is ME.
Max is the epitome of a team player. He moved from 1B (his best position) to 3B to make room for Freddie. He has also played 2B, and has become a leader in the clubhouse.
Is Devers an upgrade over Max?
Yes. But not as much as you may think.
In 2024, Devers hit to a .870 OPS.
Meanwhile, Max’s OPS was .852.
Both are meh on defense.

Badger

Everybody can put up stats that support their argument. Devers or Muncy. I could do the same but I won’t.

I don’t know the guy. Maybe his teammates love him, maybe they don’t. Boston found a way to improve their team, they did it, and it pissed him off. Can’t say I blame him, but going public the way he did was a bad idea.

I like Max. Always have. But he’s 34 and only played 73 games last year. If he can stay healthy, play 135 games, he can be Devers equal.

I doubt that trade will happen too. But I was just evaluating it.

Bumsrap

All I know about Devers’ personality/ charm / teammatemanship is from him wanting to stay at 3rd. Didn’t Seager insist on staying at short. AROD was a better shortstop than Jeter but Jeter wanted to stay at short.

I think too much is being assumed about what kind of a teammate Devers is or would be. If you don’t have depth knowledge, are you being fair to him?

Bumsrap

For the fun of it….

Ohtani
Betts
Freeman
Hernandez
Devers
Smith
Conforto
Edman
Outman

Cassidy

Outman? You mean the guy who can’t even put the ball in play? As much as I hate to give the Water Czar credit, he was absolutely right about Outman.

Badger

Ok, put Kim at second and Edman out there. Or the other way around.

Outman still has time. 2 for 2 tomorrow and he’s hitting.333.

Bumsrap

You choose to pick out Outman to comment on? I give you meat, and you talk about the peas.

Bumsrap

His career defense numbers are worse than last years. He, like Muncy, is more better than he usta be. Badger lingo inspires me.

Badger

Attitude is a lot, I’ll give you that. But so is 33 home runs and 4.6 oWAR. I don’t know the guy. Maybe his teammates love him.

If he goes to the Phillies or the Cubs he will make them better. I hope he stays in the AL, though I doubt that will happen.

In ’24, Devers hit 28 HRs in 525 ABs.
Max, who missed about half the season with injury, hit 15 HRs in 237 ABs. At that pace, Max would have had close to 35 HRs in 525 ABs.
Devers had the higher BA by 40 points, but Max had a slightly higher OBP.

Badger

I took his 4 year average in home runs and gave him one more for hitting in this lineup where he’s likely to get more strikes to hit.

Max, at 34, concerns me. Maybe he can remain injury free and be an every day player. To be honest about it I think he’s a 1B/DH at this point in his career.

On the subject of May:

“The heater is very similar <to where it was pre-surgery>,” Mark Prior said. “It’s definitely got some sink and a lot of run. For the most part, it’s pretty electric and pretty unbelievable what comes out of that arm.”

Cassidy

I know it’s only one inning after a long layoff but the gun had him at 94-95 yesterday which is 3-4 less than before his Tommy John and the sinker didn’t seem to have nearly the run it had pre surgery. But it’s early. Let’s see how he looks at the end of spring training. So happy for the young man!

Badger

I’m happy too. I would advise him to back off full velocity for a month or so. Take it easy on that twice times surgically repaired arm. There’s a long season out in front of him.

Is he a bullpen piece or a 5 inning starter?

Some early Spring impressions…
–Zyhir Hope, age 20, is showing why his stock has risen so much, flexing power on a line drive double to right and an opposite-field HR to left. To me, he looks like a more athletic Kirby Puckett. He is shining while fellow outfielders Outman and Pages aren’t. On several teams, Hope would have a shot at making the opening-day roster if he stays hot. On the Dodgers, he’s probably at least a year away.
–David Bote and Eddie Rosario are proven veterans who could be an injury away from making the roster.
–With Phillips and Kopech ailing, Dustin May and/or Bobby Miller can move to the pen. Gonsolin can be the 5th starter. Or May and/or Miller join Knack in OKC?
–Hyesong Kim’s speed created that infield hit. Lux would have been out by 2 1/2 strides. Kim’s speed is also why he is getting work in CF. With Kim and Edman aboard, the team speed is up.
–We pretty much know the starting lineup, assuming Edman in CF and Kim at 2B. There will be four bench players: Barnes, Kike, Rojas and Taylor.
Kim, at 26, will be the youngest position player on the team.

Jeff Dominique

I agree with you 100% on Hope. I also agree that the Dodgers like to slow play their prospects. I assume he starts at Great Lakes, but if he hits well, it has to be a quick move to Tulsa, right? If he hits well at AA, push him even more to OKC.

Now I am not comparing Hope to Jackson Chourio, but Chourio put up .791 OPS and 117 OPS+ as a 20 year old on a MLB roster. We can never know for sure, but does anyone believe Chourio would have been on the LAD roster at the age of 20?

I am a critic of Hope’s reads, jumps, and routes in the OF. However, because of his athleticism he can make up for his adventures in the OF. I also think he can improve.

Why are so many LAD OF defensively challenged? Outside of Outman, which LAD OF prospect has been successful defensively? Outman was a RF in college. He actually played more games at catcher (2), LF (2), than CF (1). I do believe that Pages can be a good defensive corner OF.

Sam Oyed

Conforto is signed for one year. If Hope progresses to AAA this year he could make the 2026 roster.

Jeff Dominique

IF he can get to AAA. Freeland went from A+ to AAAA last year, maybe Hope can replicate Freeland’s rise this year.

Badger

He wants to play on a team that wants him to play on their team. Can’t blame him for that.

Some team will trade for him and be better for it. Will it be a team that will be trying to beat the Dodgers this year? I’m betting it will be.

Bumsrap

Speaking of stirring the pot, how about the same 4 Dodgers for a 3rd baseman who Roberts loves like a son?

Actually, my hope is for Betts and Freeland playing on the left side together for the next 8 years or so.

Cassidy

I know it’s a crude indicator of draft success. No factor to quality of drafted players but in 2024 opening day rosters, the Dodgers had the highest percentage in mlb.
There are 583 draftees on Opening Day active rosters (74.8% of the total number of players on rosters), so the average team will produce 19.4 big leaguers. Any club with more than that is above average. Anyone below that is below average.
It’s probably no surprise that the Los Angeles Dodgers lead the way with 29 active big leaguers on Opening Day. There are six homegrown Dodgers on its own roster (Will Smith, Bobby Miller, Michael Grove, James Outman, Gavin Stone and Gavin Lux), but 23 other Dodgers draftees have made other teams’ rosters, led by Corey Seager, Nathan Eovaldi and Alex Verdugo.
The San Diego Padres only have four players they drafted and signed on their own roster (Jackson Merrill, Luis Campusano, Graham Pauley and Tom Cosgrove), but there are 24 Padres draftees on other rosters, which leaves the club second overall.
The Nationals have the fewest, with 10 draftees on Opening Day rosters. Jake Irvin is the only National draftee on Washington’s Opening Day roster.
Here’s a look at how many players each team drafted and signed are on Opening Day rosters.

Pretty awesome for a team consistently drafting at the bottom of the rounds.
Though this year we probably will have only 3 home grown players on our opening day roster.

Badger

Pretty crowded stats there Cassidy. And Lux isn’t on the Dodgers anymore.

Yes, it’s fairly well known that the Dodgers have invested a lot of time and money into scouting and development. And, they have a team of brilliant upper management personnel scouring organizations top to bottom looking for ways to improve the Major League club. It wouldn’t surprise me to see another trade or two before Opening Day.

Dave

I think there is a good chance this team becomes a dynasty. Their best players are signed long term and hey have a healthy farm system. I will be interested to see how they manage all these major league ready starting pitchers. Do they trade some for lower level prospects? Put some in the bullpen? Make some of them wait at AAA? Use them when/ if someone else gets hurt?

Badger

“Why would LA trade for Devers”

There are a few reasons why they would: every day player, 26-30 home runs, 85 RBI’s, 3.7 WAR. There are just as many reasons why they wouldn’t.

Badger

Good points.

I would think any player would be happy to play with the Los Angeles Dodgers. You are right that at the present time it’s just fans blowing smoke about this possibility. I don’t see it happening either, but with this team you never know.
