As I am writing this, the trade deadline is not over, so no conclusions can be drawn.
NYM trades for three late inning relievers:
- RHRP Gregory Soto for Wellington Aracena (NYM #16 prospect, 40 FV) and RHP Cameron Foster (not ranked).
- RHRP Tyler Rogersfor RHP Blade Tidwell (NYM #10 prospect, 45 FV), OF Drew Gilbert (NYM #12 prospect, FV 45), and RHRP José Buttó.
- RHRP Ryan Helsley for SS Jesus Baez (NYM #8 prospect, 50 FV), RHP Nate Dohm (NYM #14 prospect, FV 45), and A/A+ Class RHP Frank Elissart (not ranked in top 30).
Philadelphia trades for a closer after also signing David Robertson.
- RHRP Jhoan Duran for C Eduardo Tait (PHI #4 prospect, 55 FV) and OF Drew Gilbert (PHI #6 prospect, 55 FV).
Seattle trades for
- 1B/OF Josh Naylor for 25 year old Rookie LHP Brandyn Garcia (Seattle #13 prospect, 45 FV) and 21 year old RHP prospect Ashton Izzi (Seattle #16 prospect, 45 FV).
- 3B Eugenio Suarez for AAA 1B Tyler Locklear (SEA #9 prospect, 50 FV), A+ RHRP Hunter Cranton (SEA No. 16, 40 FV), AAA RHRP Juan Burgos (SEA No. 17, 40 FV).
I will have a full report on the trades after the deadline passes. But use this post to make comments on trades, the state of LAD, or whatever baseball issue you want to discuss.
Matz traded to the Red Sox. Kitteridge to the Cubs
Looks like LAD is looking more at Bieber than Kwan. Not saying they won’t do a trade for Kwan, but Rushing is not going to be a part of it, so who would Cleveland want who is MLB ready?
Both of their catchers on the roster now are struggling really bad. Both below the Mendoza line.
I would like to see what he can do at OKC.
So would I. But the Dodgers are more comfortable with Kyle Funkhouser, Matt Sauer, Landon Knack, and bullpen games.
Well no closers guess the dodgers didn’t think thst was a problem. Going with what they have looks like Tanner Scott in the playoffs and hope Treinian and Kopech come back to form like they were last year in playoffs. Oh boy doing nothing at deadline when they needed help ouch.
There is still 12 hours before the deadline at 3.00 PM EST
But the big name closers are all gone. I guess see what starter they go and get like a Bieber or Alcantara. Maybe they bring back Kenley Jansen and get Taylor Ward fans would like that. We will see.
They are now, Miller traded to the Padres along with JP Sears. Pads are sending 4 players to the A’s. Very doubtful that the Angels, who just traded for two relievers, would trade with the Dodgers. They haven’t made a deal since the aborted Joc Pederson trade.
The Angels are hoping to pull an inside straight…
6pm EST
I stand corrected. Thanks Sam
Nothing more happening tonight. Finished setting up my new laptop. Has thumb print recognition. ooooooooooooooooh.
Looks like Hunter Feducca got traded to Rays in 3 team trade with Reds and Rays. Dodgers get adam serwinkowski paul gervise (p) and ben rortvedi (c) according to mlb rumors .com
This team needs a spark, an infusion of excitement. Will Max Muncy be that guy? August 1st is tomorrow and many of us have said “it’s early, we’ll kick it in gear when we have to, wait until we get our pitchers back” etc.
Now is the time to start playing well in all phases of the game. I’m very worried about Ohtani and Betts. Betts has not been himself all season and Ohtani looks horrible at the plate. How does Mookie lose such bat speed in one year? His right shoulder tilt in his attempt to lift and separate is frustrating resulting in many fly outs to right field. The team needs much better.
Teo parlayed a great first season in LA into a three-year contract. Many pundits thought he would get two years but he and his agent did a good job in FA and got AF to give him a third year. Was that a mistake?
I’m hoping for a Kwan acquisition today. Put him in LF hitting lead off followed by Mookie and Ohtani and watch the offense take off. Will it happen? Most likely no it will not.
Parades over prospects was mentioned here by a poster and more prophetic words have never been spoken. Get it done AF/BG.
Go Dodgers!
Bumsrap:
Pages for Kwan.
I like it.
Ohtani looks tired. Maybe pitching this year is not such a good idea. 15 day?
I said early that this team would need some R&R in the dog days. Well those days are here. And with the Padres barking at their heels will there be opportunity for these guys to get time off?
I’m very interested in this Gervase fellow. 14.1 K/9 at AAA. He might could help right away.
The Dodgers need three months of offense. Where will it come from with this fatigued group? I think I can say this with certainty; if Betts and Ohtani continue at their current pace, the Dodgers offense will remain stalled.
Still a lot of upside in Pages’ game.
Hell no.
Per Morosi, Shane Bieber in the verge of being traded to Toronto
It looks like 22 year old Khal Stephen is going to be the return for Bieber.
More on Khal Stephen. Toronto is buying very high to win this year on Bieber. Jackson Ferris is the only LAD pitcher prospect who is rated higher, and only River Ryan with a 50 FV is comparable. There is no way that AF/BG trade Ferris or Ryan for Bieber.
Next year’s Miggy Ro? Noah Miller has always been a wizard with the glove, but has come on fast this year with the bat.
I am ready now for this lineup:
LF Kwan
C Smith
!B Freeman
2B Betts
DH Ohtani
RF Hernandez
CF Outman
3B Freeland
SS Miller
Per Jeff Passan:
This is close, I presume, to what Badger meant by “all in”
Wow.
Not sure his track record is great, but you gotta admire Preller for his aggressiveness
Not one of his trades has resulted in a Championship. Even when he went and got Soto. His farm system is pretty thin right now. AF is not going to overpay for any player.
Not really what I as talking about. I just like his aggressiveness.
It’s like Dustin May, he’s fun to watch even if the results aren’t great.
Back to Preller, I’m much more process oriented in baseball fandom, mostly because of the randomness of the playoffs. Preller’s process is great. He’s an exceptional talent scout and much more liberal with his prospect assets.
But he will overpay in the off season. Scott, Yates, Conforto and Teo.
Scott in years and salary, Teo in years, Yates and Conforto in salary.
Yet he rebuilds it every time he tears it down. The Soto trade to San Diego was August 2, 2022. The headliner in this trade was SS Leo De Vries (60 FV). He was signed as an IFA on 01-15-2024. C Ethan Salas (55 FV), the new #1 for San Diego, was signed as an IFA 01-15-2023. RHP Humberto Cruz (50 FV), the new #2, was signed as an IFA on 02-01-2024, LHP Kash Mayfield (50 FV) the new #3 was SD’s 2024 1st round pick (25th overall), and LHP Boston Bateman (50 FV) was SD’s 2nd round 2024 #2 pick (52nd overall).
San Diego’s #3 prospect at the time of the trade was RHP Braden Nett who was an UDFA signed 08-01-2022, one day before the Soto trade. So they refilled their prospect pool enough to get them Mason Miller.
I have no doubt that San Diego will find a number of IFA to refill the prospect list just as they did after the Soto trade.
That being said, you are right that it has not resulted in a championship. They did beat the Dodgers in the 2022 NLDS, and they were extremely close in 2024. I keep hearing that the job is to get to the playoffs, then luck takes over from there. San Diego will get there again this year.
Wow. The Dodgers better do something because the Padres are going for it. They already have an excellent BP and this move makes a late inning comeback that more difficult.
Let’s go Dodgers
San Diego is not done. They will find a LF. But they are leaving no doubt they want to win this year.
The Dodgers do not have a De Vries. San Diego will worry about the 2027 SS after 2026.
They can have Conforto
They are not messing around.
they could move one of their relievers now.
We have to wait and see. It could be some of their relievers that went back to the A’s.
I’m doing my annual every five minute MLBtraderumors.com update today and hoping for a significant OF offensive upgrade and a shutdown RP.
Perhaps all we get is a Joe Kelly signing and nothing else. Jeff D. has commented many times about how the Dodger brass slow play the elevation of minor league players. Have to give up something to get something. Hoping AF delivers some young athletic talent that makes us more diverse on the base paths with a hitter that puts the ball in play. Way too many strikeouts in the line-up right now.
And outside of Shohei, very little HR power for last month and a half. This prolonged hitting slump is concerning. Shocking!
And an OPS around .670
Feels like a good time to bring up this quote:
“I hate trading for relievers at the deadline,” Friedman said in 2022. “It’s my least favorite thing to do. The acquisition cost is totally out of whack. So I like to avoid it as much as possible.”
“I prefer to pay too much over the winter…”
After last off season he must hate signing relievers in the off season as well!
Totally. So much variance in relievers.
I still don’t get why they changed strategies to sign Yates, but that’s old news.
I was more surprised that he signed Scott for 4 years/$72M. At least Yates was only for 1 year. Both are looking like mistakes so far.
Full Mason Miller trade:
As Bluto indicated, this now sets up San Diego to trade Robert Suarez along with Dylan Cease. There would have to be more, but Boston wants Cease, and can use Suarez, in the Padres quest for Jarren Duran. The Padres still have 3 50 FV pitchers and 3 45 FV in their top 10. This could entice Cleveland to trade Steven Kwan. Nothing will surprise me as to what Preller will do this year.
Per Dennis Lin:
Guardians’ ask for Steven Kwan included Leo De Vries and more.
yeah. He’s a lot of fun to watch. I low key admire him. not just for the aggressive trades, but a good eye for talent too.
a little shady, i guess, but fun.
He’s not going to get both Duran and Kwan, so maybe we can grab his leftovers.
I’ve always been a big Kwan fan but Duran made a believer out of me when we played Boston recently. I’d love to have either of them and would love it even more if Preller didn’t get either one of them.
I wonder if AJ has enough left to go get Alcantara now. Actually, by trading Suarez/Cease, he’ll have more trade fodder.
Here is my gold glove Dodger outfield:
LF Kwan
CF Outman
RF Duran
Def makes it interesting for us. I’m still stunned a combo of Knack, Hoese, and Outman didn’t get us Miller.
Or Bobby for Mason?
Your information was incorrect Bobby. The deal fell apart when AF refused to include Hoese.
I don’t know enough, but I wonder if you could argue that that would be the inverse example of the trade the Padres just did. As extreme of an underpay as the Padres overpaid. Given relievers.
Anyone interested in a Duran for Rushing plus package?
I am/was but now that Fedducia has been dealt I don’t think we trade Rushing
Anyone on Earth?
On this board?
On TrueBlue?
In the Dodgers Front Office?
The season is flying by. Already completed April, May, June, and July. I give the Dodgers an overall B for the first 4 months, a C for July’s defense, a C- for July’s offense.
Can Edman play the second half with healthy legs?
Will Kim return to Oklahoma?
Will Roberts let Outman play?
Will Kwan be a Dodger?
Will Freeland continue to look like he belongs w/ Dodgers?
I don’t want to trade for pitching unless including Bieber is the only way they can get Kwan.
A July record of 10-14 for one of the “greatest” teams ever gets a solid D- from me.
Do we have a shut down closer? Not in my book. We’re at a big 9th inning disadvantage to Padres, Phillies and Mets.
Bieber is a Blue Jay now, so no chance.
Well, Puds have made a big splash. They are going for it big time. If Mookie and Shohei don’t start mashing again, we are in deep doo-doo.
Over the last three seasons it’s always the padres that worry me the most. They have that little brother chip on their shoulder, and seem to play a little better against the Dodgers than they do normally, plus Preller is fearless when it comes to making moves to improve his team.
and they (Well, Tatis) are fun to watch!
They won’t catch us if Ohtani and Betts wake the phuck up.
If they don’t?
Unless ohtani gets hurt I am not concerned.I am very concerned about Mookie but he should bounce back.
They sure do which is why it was so satisfying to beat them last year. They tried and tried but failed.
As Jorge would say, “F those sons of bitches”
Padres already strong bullpen just got a lot stronger with Miller. They will be hard to beat for any team meeting them in the playoffs. I feel fairly certain the Dodgers didn’t want to match the A’s asking price. Friedman hasn’t gotten the Dodgers into the post season TEN STRAIGHT YEARS by giving away the shop like Preller does. Padres better win it all and soon because their minor league “shelves” are pretty bare now.
Phils about to get Harrison Bader, so scratch him off your bingo card
Dodgers about to re-acquire Brock Stewart. (good call Jeff!!)
Brock Stewart was exactly the level of reliever AF/BG were always looking for. He is a good very reliable reliever, just not a closer. AF/BG are committed to Tanner Scott.
Also committed to Conforto, it seems…
Shoot for those stars! Why not get Wilmer Font?
I say let’s go get Dreifort/Mota/Gagne! That was a fantastic bullpen till Depodesta screwed it all up
Paul Quantrill was very good too. Dan Evans built some strong pitching staffs around that time. They were always a bat short.
He was an asshole as a general during the civil war
Dodgers X bloggers are laughing at San Diego for trading the #3 prospect and 60 FV, SS Leo De Vries for a closer, even one as good as Mason Miller. If San Diego keeps Robert Suarez, the best MLB bullpen which is carrying this team, just got a lot better. And they did not hurt their current team, which now sits 3.0 games behind the Dodgers.
At the same time, many of those same X bloggers are going crazy overhyping the trade for Adam Serwinowski, a two pitch pitcher, with huge reliever risk, and a 45 FV. Some are favorably comparing Serwinowski to Jackson Ferris…a huge overhype.
MLB Pipeline debuts Serwinowski at #13. Every publication that puts out top prospect lists are very careful to remind us all that where the player is on the prospect list is not nearly as relevant as the FV grade. There is very little distinction between one 45 FV and the other 45 FV prospects.
The other 45 FV pitchers that Serwinowski has been placed above are:
· Hyun-Seok Jang #14
· Edgardo Henriquez #15
· Eriq Swan #16
· Christian Zazueta #18
· Patrick Copen #19
· Sean Paul Linan #20
· Payton Martin #22
So he could have fallen to #22. Instead #13.
I recognize and acknowledge that Hunter Feduccia was blocked more than Dalton Rushing, and he needed to be moved. And getting a return of a pitcher with the prospect level of Adam Serwinowski is a very good trade. Not going to shade this deal. I am absolutely thrilled that Feduccia is now going to get a real opportunity, something he was not going to get with LAD.
How much better (if at all) is Paul Gervase than Will Klein. Like Klein, Gervase is a hard throwing strikeout pitcher who walks too many. In his 6.0 MLB innings, 6 K and 5 BB. That being said, I will not dismiss the fact that LAD somehow finds a way to uncover reliever nuggets from the muck. Maybe Gervase is the next Evan Phillips or Anthony Banda. However, does he belong on the 26 man more than homegrown AAA relievers Edgardo Henriquez or Jack Little? How about José Rodríguez, Julian Fernández, or Garrett McDaniels.
Ben Rorvedt was an unnecessary throw in.
The Las Vegas A’s are looking better and better.
A lot of the prospects are overhyped, and never even sniff the majors. All you have to do to see a future MLB all-star, is watch them play. FV grades are not necessary. The first time I saw Corey Seager play during spring training, it was obvious he was going to be an all-star. It didn’t take advanced metrics or algrebraeic formulas. Cody Bellinger was the same, Julio Urias, etc. Some do come on slow.
Some players become productive regulars, which is just fine too. But it seems as if every single low level prospect the Dodgers acquire is hyped up to be a super star.
FV is a comparative tool. It does not distinguish whether the prospect makes it to MLB or not. Nobody missed on the prospects you named. Seager had a 65 FV, Urías had a 65 FV, Joc had a 60 FV, Belli had a 55 FV. Every one of these were projected to be stars, and only Urías was not an All Star, although he did win an ERA title. That being said, I do not think that it should go unsaid that every one of those players were drafted or signed in the Colletti/Logan White era.
Agree that Rorvedt was totally unnecessary, unless he’s going to be Will’s backup because we’re trading Rushing. 🙁
Looks like you and I were both right about welcoming back Brock Stewart. He’s really not talked about much but has become an excellent reliever since he left LA. Now the question is what did we have to give up to bring him back?
I’m going to be very disappointed if we don’t get Kwan or Duran by the end of the day. Of course, Duran is probably not going to get traded so that leaves Kwan. I would think we can put as strong a package together as anyone if AF wants him badly enough.
And then we can go get Fairbanks and Alcantara and the day will have been a success.
Rorvedi replaces Fedducia. A No. 3 catcher with ML experience. He’ll be competing with Chuckie Robinson.
Minnesota trades OF Harrison Bader to Minnesota for OF Hendry Mendez (#12 prospect, 45 FV) and RHP 16 year old RHP Geremy Villoria, a true DSL lottery ticket (not on top 30 prospect list).
Yes, the Dodgers could have matched this deal with Kendall George, and any of the DSL lottery tickets.
Kendall George is the #5 OF at Great Lakes. De Paula, Hope, Sirota, and Quintero are all better prospects, so how likely is it that Kendall George ever reaches LAD?
Surprised the Dodgers didn’t get Bader. The consensus is that they are looking for another hitter and Bader would significantly help their outfield defense.
Ardaya spoke to this, he wrote that Bader’s carrying trait was his glove, that’s not really what the Dodgers are looking for.
I agree. LAD management does not give a s*** that they have MLB’s worst OF when Outman is not in CF.
Did not get Bader–and dealt Outman.
Best CF now is probably Edman.
The post season tends to highlight your weaknesses (like Pages last night). Hope that doesn’t bite the Dodgers. Kwan would be an upgrade in LF but center is still iffy. Duran in CF in lieu of Kwan?
Did you just reply to a two consecutive posts that affirmed defense is not important to the Dodgers (IMO: Bat > Versatlity > Defense) by suggesting that the Dodgers, checks comments:
Make a move predicated on defensive upside?!?!?
Yes. Look what defense did for the Yankees last year.
Maybe they didn’t match the deal because they are planning on getting Kwan. If so, Pages will be our CF for the rest of the year, although I guess Kwan could play there too.
Do you think there is any chance they’d include Pages in a deal for Kwan?
If I was Cleveland I would insist on it.
C’mon AF, free Ryan Ward.
Would be nice to see him get a chance.
Which of our prospects would have matched with Yankee package for Bednar?
I only know of one right now, C/1B Rafael Flores, NYY #8 prospect, 40 FV. I have not seen the other two names yet. If you have them, please let me know.
Per Passan:
Among the return to the Pirates in Bednar deal, per ESPN sources: Catcher Rafael Flores, who tore up AA, is now at AAA, is a top-shelf framer and regarded as a big league-ready catcher. A very good centerpiece. Also in it: Edgleen Perez, who is 19 with excellent swing decisions.
Per Morosi:
Full trade, source confirms:
Yankees acquire David Bednar.
Pirates receive Rafael Flores, Edgleen Perez, Brian Sanchez.
Again this is overhype by Passan (IMO). He is a 24 year old C/1B who MLB Pipeline gives a scouting grade of 40 hit, 50 power, 35 run, 50 arm, 45 field, 40 overall.
Their scouting report is not very bullish on Flores ever being a regular.
“Flores generates plus raw power and some of the best exit velocities among Yankees farmhands. A right-handed hitter, he employs a pull-heavy approach designed to crush balls to left field, and he could tap into even more pop if he could make more consistent contact and lift more balls in the air. He has a disciplined approach but comes with in-zone swing-and-miss issues.
Though he’s bigger than most backstops, Flores moves OK for a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder and continues to improve behind the plate as he gets more reps. He still needs to refine his receiving, framing and blocking but looks more and more like a viable slugger off the bench who can fill in at catcher and first base. He has average arm strength, but inconsistent mechanics and accuracy led to 115 steals against him at an 84 percent success rate in 67 starts last year.”
Per Passan and Rosenthal:
The Yankees are close to acquiring reliever David Bednar from the Pirates, per source.
I know the ink goes to Jhoan Duran, Mason Miller, Ryan Helsley…but the Dodgers may have traded for the best RHRP on the market, even though Stewart is not a closer. Back end high leverage relievers like Alex Vesia and Brock Stewart will be formidable. And I still have no idea who the Dodgers traded to get Stewart.
A little surprised that AF has not made a major deal, especially now that with Bednar heading to the Yankees, all of the plus closers are off of the market. But maybe he feels that with Scott coming back, Diaz showing the form he had the last three years, with Treinen back and Snell back toon, he could move someone like May to the pen as a short reliever, he has enough arms that he does not need to trade for a top of the line closer. He could still swing a trade for Fairbanks or someone like him. Or maybe he is concentrating on getting Kwan from the Guardians. Yankees gave up 3 players for Bednar.
How come you’re talking in the past tense about AF when there are still almost 3 hours left to make trades and he almost always waits until the last minute.
I’d be shocked if we don’t see another trade or two before the deadline.
And I would rate Fairbanks not far below Bednar in value so don’t give up hope on getting him today.
You are right that AF is quite often a 15 minutes past the deadline announcement on trades.
Fairbanks would be a good closer to latch on to, but I not as certain as you that he is in the Bednar tier. Bednar has 17 saves, 3 holds, and 0 blown saves. Fairbanks has 18 saves, 0 holds, and 4 blown saves.
Bednar’s line – 2.37 ERA, 1.96 FIP, 1.105 WHIP, 5.10 K/BB, 51 K in 38 IP
Fairbanks’ line – 2.90 ERA, 3.16 FIP, 1.140 WHIP, 2.27 K/BB, 34 K in 40 IP
I do not see equal results for these two closers. Plus Bednar has one more year of control.
Well, I did use the word “below” even if the qualifying “not far” may have been a little too much.
I was noting he had not done anything major, last year, a couple of his deals were not announced until after the deadline expired. Chill dude.
Hope and pray that Kopech, Scott and Graterol return armed and ready.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not sure I’m as excited about this years version of Tanner Scott.
At this point I’d rather have Michael Scott as closer
That’s what she said
Imagine Prison Mike coming out for the 9th. We got this!
Padres just traded for catcher Freddie Fermin from the Royals.
Good trade for San Diego. Fermin is a good catcher and the cost was a 45 FV RHP Ryan Berget. Fermin is an improvement over Elias Diaz and Martin Maldonado. What we do not know is how he will relate to the SDP pitching staff. Again, SDP is trying to improve the 2025 team, and not worrying about 2026 and later.
Padres also gave up Kolek in the trade
Well, one thing for sure: Preller got guts and balls.
Padres will be tough down the stretch with that backend of the bullpen.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just curious, I’ve read about a lot of Kwan interest here, but not much about Donovan, is it that you guys feel Kwan is that much more superior, or that Donovan is not quite as available
According to MLBTR, Donovan, Nootbaar, and Burleson, are not going to be traded.
Still like the trade for San Diego.
They also gave up Ryan Bergert.
One of the reasons we do not yet know who was traded to Minnesota for Stewart is because it is not yet finalized. The Dodgers are spending a lot of time on Brock’s medicals.
Per The Athletic – The Dodgers/Twins deal hasn’t been finalized due to the Dodgers still mulling over Brock Stewart’s medicals. Stewart had elbow issues in 2023 and shoulder surgery in 2024.
.
A true Dodger lol
Sorry Bradley, Mets getting Cedric Mullins from Baltimore
That’s because the Mets do trades at the deadline not the dodgers. Hey with Outman gone now they can call up Ryan Ward from Oklahoma since they think we have the talent in the minor leagues.
Add this to the “Dodgers don’t preference defense” conversation above (and maybe to the Ward one?):
James Outman is heading to the Twins as part of the Brock Stewart trade, source confirms. @Alden_Gonzalez
had that part.
I am really happy for Outman. He deserves a fair shot. With Buxton out, Outman will slide right into CF unitl Buxton gets back and then Outman will probably move to LF in the place of Bader.
Yep, LAD does not give a rip about defense. Good luck with Conforto/Pages/Teo as the LAD OF.
I hope it’s Outman + Ward. He deserves a shot.
How about Kwan/Pages/Teo? Or maybe Teo/Kwan/Pages?
We’ll know in about 2 hours.
Trade is one for one.
IMHO, Outman was barely going to play at Dodger Stadium. Stewart (we presume health, I guess) is definitely going to pitch.
That’s gotta be a win
As per Ardaya;
Just two seasons ago, James Outman finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting. He was their starting center fielder two years in a row. Now, he’s heading to Minnesota as the Dodgers add a reliever in Brock Stewart…
Wait. Wait. Wait.
Brock Stewart is 33??!?!?!??!?
I read that he was out of baseball for 3 years…. Despite his age (no big deal to me), I’ve read that the Dodgers would have another two seasons of contol.
I am not saying that this in any way is a bad trade for the Dodgers. It is a great trade. One of the best RHRP in MLB for a defensive minded #4 OF. I am just happy for Outman who gets a reset in Minnesota.
I am thrilled for Outman. He should get a chance to be a full time starter in Minnesota. I hope he does well. Now, free Ryan Ward.
100%
Good luck James! Thanks for an almost best play ever last night!!
Per Dennis Lin, and possibly written for Badger:
On a frenetic, all-in deadline day, the Padres are still determined to acquire a left fielder, with Ramón Laureano among the possibilities. A.J. Preller has already traded a ton of young talent, but he still has some interesting prospects left to offer including catcher Ethan Salas and pitchers Boston Bateman, Kash Mayfield and Miguel Mendez
Are the Padres more all in?
The San Diego Padres are finalizing a deal to acquire first baseman Ryan O’Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles, sources tell ESPN.
Yep. This is what all in looks like.
Padres will need name tags for tomorrow’s game
Them and the Twins.
Pleased for him. Another trade coming I think.
This one?
BREAKING: The Minnesota Twins are trading shortstop Carlos Correa to the Houston Astros, sources tell ESPN.
Cheaters reunited.
Wat, my Brit Brother, sorry I was in London with my bosses 2 months ago, but had ZERO free time to contact anyone!
Stayed in Mayfair, and had a ton of good food! Also did Paris for the weekend. That ferry back from France to England was absolutely beautiful on the English Channel!
Next year I hope to have some more free time to get a pint and watch the Dodgers at 4am with you!
My bad, I thought I read a few days ago that the cards were listening on Donovan, either I messed up, which is most likely, or the cards changed their thoughts on him. Thanks Bear
And Minnesota said they were not trading Correa back to Houston, and yet they are. You never know. It all depends as to how the trading team values Donovan and whether that is commensurate with what St. Louis believes his value is. Before the end of the day, Donovan and Kwan could both be traded.
Scum trash Correa being traded back to scum trash houston
Really happy for Outman but I must say I’m very surprised that we got Stewart for James, one for one.
Spoken like Roberts.
I’ve have always rooted for Stewart and am happy he is a Dodger again.
I root for Outman. Not a prediction, but I think he can hit .250+ with an .800 OPS. OBVIOUSLY Roberts doesn’t.
Now trade Conforto. Obtain Kwan and Duran.
With his defense, if he has an OPS of .720 or better (league average), he would be an asset.
If Outman can make contact, he’s a really good player.
Let’s hope he makes more contact in Minnesota.
Sure we all wish Outman well, but he had his chance and could not hit either here or at AAA. , we stuck with Bellinger when he was the worst hitter in baseball for 2 years. Now he has recovered. Maybe same for Outman
Outman hit very well at AAA.
Ok. Could not hit here
No. Did well in 2023 and then tanked.
Padres now getting Ohearn and Laureano from the O’s
Hopefully means they’re out on Kwan.
So far the only player that has been identified going back to Baltimore is current #4 prospect LHP Boston Bateman, 50 FV. As many as five MiLB players also going back to Baltimore.
It’s an alliteration rich real return (hee hee hee) for the Padres:
Two of the prospects?
Boston Bateman
Brandon Butterworth
More last second deals by AF this year? Kwan and Jax?
Damn, I was hoping.
Padres may trade for Skubal or Skenes next
THere’s a report they are looking to trade Cease, as per Heyman:
Cease to Houston is progressing. Astros might get a reliever, too if deal can be completed
Why not both?
A lot of teams have gotten better today. Dodgers aren’t one of them. Yet.
Dodgers definitely got better.
Yet…… AF will do something
Of all the marquee relievers that got dealt, Mason Miller was the one I’ve coveted for the Dodgers for more than a year.
And it hurts that he’s going to the Padres.
Miller is a beast of a closer. A bad outing or two pushed his ERA above 3.00, but in most appearances he seems nearly unhittable. He’s young and the Padres will be able to control him through the ’29 season. They could also try shifting him back into the rotation.
Yes, Preller gave up a lot to get him. Could the Dodgers have bested the offer? Not without multiple top prospects. (I’d have been willing to deal Rushing for him.)
We’ll probably see whether the Padres made the right move in the postseason. Anyway, it’s not hard to imagine the Padres facing the Dodgers with the series on the line in Chavez Ravine… and Miller taking the mound.
The Outman-for-Brock Stewart deal had me hoping that maybe AF was poised to land Kwan to create OF of Kwan-Pages-Teo. Stewart is solid. But in dealing Outman, I think the Dodgers just lost their best defender in CF. Dodgers were either outbid or passed on Harrison Bader and Cedric Mullins.
If Outman had been able to make a fantastic game-saving catch, would he still be a Dodger?
As of this writing, still no word on Kwan…
Wow the Padres got Laureano and Ohearn would love to see what the padres gave up why the dodgers didn’t go for those two when the could have used both of them. Is AF just scared to tradr guys like there going to be the next Barry Bonds becauee if there is a guy like that why isn’t he playing in leftfield then over conforto.
The price for Laureano and O’Hearn was high. They cost the Padres six prospects. Cobb Hightower OF, Util man Victor Figueroa, RHP Tyson Neighbors, RHP Tanner Smith, Inf Brandon Butterworth, and RHP Boston Bateman.
And they are both rentals.
I don’t see how SD can trade Cease without bringing in another starter from somewhere.
I have this nightmare scenario where they get some good prospects for Cease and put together a package to get Alcantara.
Padres are all in. Just made another trade, this time with the Jays.
I just go bananas with people complaining trading James Outman. He has a robust batting average of .103 and he was going to AAA again when Kike come back from the IL.
Kike may not be back. Max will return before Kike and he provides something neither Kike or Outman has, power from the left side.
You are misreading what most of us are saying. We happen to like James Outman and hope he goes off with Minnesota. But most of us (if not all of us) believe the trade was great for the Dodgers. We like the trade, but we are hoping that James Outman has a great career in Minnesota.
Zero people are complaining.
Exactly zero.
Per Passan:
The Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring outfielder Alex Call from the Washington Nationals, a source tells ESPN. The Nationals will receive two pitching prospects from the Dodgers for Call, per source.
On the downside: bad for the Ryan Ward stans
On the interesting side: More speed!
Per Ardaya:
Speculatively, looks like the Dodgers have formed something of a platoon in left field in trading for Alex Call. Call, 30, can play all three OF spots and is sporting an .807 OPS vs. LHP. Could help Michael Conforto build on a strong July (.827 OPS).
The return for Washington: Eriq Swan and Sean Paul Liñan
I know I’m a sucker for potential arms, but I actually think this return outweighs that for Brock Stewart!
The Dodgers have added to their outfield mix by adding Alex Call in a trade with the Nationals, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand says the Nats will get two pitching prospects in return, and the Washington Post’s Andrew Golden specifies the two pitchers as Eriq Swan and Sean Paul Linan
Outman’s replacement, late inning defensive replacement, good athleticism and insurance while Enrique is out.
AF still not done yet.
So no need then for Ruiz anymore?
Dodgers acquire OF Alex Call for Eriq Swan and Sean Paul Liñan. Both RHP with a 45 FV.
Wowwwwww that seems like a LOT for a 4th outfielder??
At first glance I thought the same thing but the left hander they acquired in the Hunter Feduccia trade is now ranked as their 13th prospect in the system and the 6’10 reliever might be in their bullpen this year. I thought the return for Feduccia seemed like a lot.
Call fits the profile of a guy I had mentioned earlier in Jacob Young. Similar player but same team. Right handed batter, very good athlete, quality defender in center. Fits better as a fourth outfielder than Outman or Ruiz, in my opinion.
Not the quantity or quality of the Padres overhaul today but if Betts, Freeman, Hernandez return to form or at least closer to form then the offense will be fine. None of the playoff teams can match a healthy rotation of Yamamoto, Snell, Glasnow, and Ohtani. Going to be an interesting last two months.
So well said. Our top 4 hitters are the best in baseball, but have taken a couple months off
He is excellent in center field.
He did get beat out by Jacob Young for CF. He mostly plays corner OF for Washington. Maybe he plays more CF with LAD, but he really is a 4th OF as he was for Washington. He started 53 games for the Nats.
Very steep indeed. With the prices we’re seeing for relief pitchers, fourth outfielders and utility players I don’t see Kwan happening. I hope I’m wrong.
Longenhagen on the Fedduccia 3-man trade:
Dustin May to the Red Sox.
Between May, Frduccia and Outman its liberation day!
Poor Ryan Ward
Yep. Feel bad for Ward.
If I am not mistaken, Ward can become a free agent after this season.
Dodgers trade Dustin May to Boston
Wow! Weak sauce AF!!!! Prospect paralysis! We are way behind in the bullpen in the late innings in October compared to our competition! Right now, the July Dodgers are one and done in the playoffs. We’re going to have to start playing much better. If not then can we hold the Pads off for the division title?
Very weak. As usual Friedman serves us the Friedman special in July, which is nothing. 2024 was an abberation only because it was Ohtani’s first year as a Dodger. Friedman goes right back to obsessing over overrated prospects and picking up Tampa Bay’s leftovers. Just pathetic.
Everyone good with Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates blowing games in October? Those guys suck, and no amount of wishful thinking is going to change this.
I like Brock Stewart (even though he sucked as a Dodger in his first stint) but they also downgraded at third catcher, Ben Rotervedt??? (WHO?), and picked up a few other prospects that will probably never make it to the majors. Although the one in the Tampa Bay/Cincy deal looks like he could be promising if the Dodgers could teach him how to throw strikes, which very few in the organization can do anyways right now.
No Kwan, No Jax, No Bednar, No closer. Nobody that is going to immediately improve the active roster outside of Stewart. I guess as usual Friedman and the Dodgers just think that everything will work out magically.
More losing to come folks.
Didn’t AF trade for Scherzer and Turner a few years ago?
If Mookie, Teo, Muncy, and Ohtani don’t start mashing again, we are toast.
this is very true. If the team’s best players don’t play well, they probably won’t have a good outcome.
Dodgers get James Tibbs III for May. Anyone know who this dude is?
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/james-tibbs-iii-696486?stats=career-r-hitting-milb
Tibbs III is a good OF prospect. Boston #5 prospect and a 50 FV. A good value for May. Tibbs III went to Boston in the Devers trade earlier this year.He was a 1st round pick for SF last year
Why did the Giants move him?
Rafael Devers trade
For Devers.
Oh he was in the Devers trade? didnt know that.
Devers being crappy since the trade and the giants having the worst record in baseball since the trade may be my favorite story of 2025 so far.
If he stays in AA, he becomes the best position player on the Tulsa roster. This was a good deal for LAD, for the future. How many top OF do the Dodgers plan on stockpiling?
For Tibbs!
I was stoked when Boston got him, kinda amazed the Dodgers got him.
it’s a really good return for a starter that had nowhere to pitch
that’s not all they got!
Holy moly!
Source: Red Sox also send Zach Ehrhard to the Dodgers for May
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/zach-ehrhard-701394?stats=career-r-hitting-milb
Wow he was the 13th overall pick in 2024; clearly he has some talent!
Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40
Overall 40?
‘They call me Mr Tibbs’
Oh boy what a trade deadline all the moves. For us three guys that are so going to help us down the wire. Stewart, Call, and Tibbs bet the Padres are scared as they get Miller Fermin, Laureano, OHearn, and probabe Sandy Alacantra some how. And the Giants welll they traded for nobody.and the dbacks didn’t trade there two good pitchers wow. Guess magic is going to hut these Dodgers to hit and there’s so much talent on the farm I guess.
Wrong again. Sandy Alantara did not get traded and Arizona’s Merrill Kelly was traded to Texas.
The Giants were sellers not buyers and did trade some decent players and got some good prospects in return.
I don’t think the Dodgers fear San Diego either.
Lace em up and let’s play ball.
My opinion is the Dodgers would finish stronger with Teo in LF, Outman in CF, and Pages in RF. Conforto on the bench. May was a decent piggyback pitcher but Stewart need an opening.
Jeff and Bear produce amazing content, but imagine a point-counterpoint recurring feature with Bradley and Scott!
entertainment to the infinite level
I am going to do a write up on this year’s trade deadline for the Dodgers over at my site,
But would like to see your article….oh wait, you don’t have a blog. Just a peanut gallery.
Get a life Bluto
What’s the name of your site?
If this morning someone had said the Dodgers were going to trade May, Outman, Feduccia, and Swann, would any of you guys had guessed the MLB players we were going to get back were Stewart, and Call. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with the deals, what I am saying is I never have a clue of what Andrew is going to do.
AF needed some one to shore up the bull pen, and the outfield, and that’s what he got, just not what any of us predicted.
Join the club. I was surprised a bit he did not do more, but they feel with Max coming back, Snell being activated this weekend, and Kopech hopefully in late August early September, that they were solid.
You can’t be surprised. How many years has he acquired top-level players at the deadline? Last year and 2021. 2 out of the last 10 years.
2017 Yu Darvish, 2018, Manny Machado.
Rich Hill and Reddick?
Neither one was very good that year. Reddick was a rental and a total failure as a Dodger. He traded for guys before the September 1 date that were much better. Chase Utley in the middle of August in 2015, David Freese in 2018. Freese hit .325 as a Dodger and was excellent in the post season.
This point was not about how players performed after they were traded for. You don’t get to manage teams with time-machines.
The point, Scott’s, was acquiring “top-level players at the deadline”
Reddick sucked
Tony Cingrani and Tony Watson weren’t bad deadline trades in 2017.
Only got two out of five Scott!
Forty percent!
Thats probably the high water mark for recent posts!
Keep insulting Bluto. Just shows how out of touch with reality you are. Your insults are petty and childish. And none of them bother me.
I don’t count Machado since the club would not have acquired him if Seager had not been injured.
Darvish, (Darvish sucked in the world series) scherzer, Turner, Kopech, Flaherty, and Edmon. I guess if you throw in Watson and Cingrani as Jeff mentioned that is 8 players in 10 years. Very underwhelming.
That reasoning not to include Machado is moronic, but that’s par for the course with recent posts. Are improvements due to injury somehow less import than improvements due to under-performance?
so stupid.
Even without Machado, which again is moronic, it’s a major move at least 50% of the time over the past 10 years. Which, by the way, easily outstrips any other MLB team during that period.
Go write your new article! I look forward to reading it and hope it’s more accurate than recent posts.
Do you know how to communicate without childish insults? It’s pathetic Bluto.
If you like I can certainly sink to your level.
I would have preferred Kwan, but, Call is an upgrade on Conforto. One of the lockdown closers would have also been nice.
nice little moment captured here:
Dodgers also get 22-year-old outfielder Zach Ehrhard in the May trade. So Jeff, I guess the Dodgers feel they have a shortage of MiLB outfielders.
It would appear the Dodgers are “all in” on Betts, Ohtani, Freeman, Smith, Teo, Muncy, Snell, Yamamoto and Glasnow. They all better play at their peak. The best of the rest are coming.
Jack Harris summarizes, hopefully the Brandon Gomes quotes come through with the following link:
Well, that was anti-climactic. Two young outfielders for May, Outman for Stewart and Call for two young pitchers. Had to believe for a while that they had something else in the works, but that was not the case. Cubs have DFAd Pressley.
Whenever I see the Dodgers trading for prospects I can’t help thinking that those poor guys will never see the light of day in a MLB Dodger uniform. So I have a hard time getting excited about some 22 year old outfielder or pitcher purportedly with a load of potential. They are basically future trade bait.
Yes, this obliquely came up in a conversation with Jeff D. The idea of viewing Dodger prospects as successes if and only if they end up as dodger regulars is probably out of date with current management.
they can end up as Dodgers! Like Smith, pages, Casparius, Sheehan, etc. But most prospects are gonna end up as MLB players elsewhere, if they become MLB players that is.
For me, I find it better to view them as assets. I realize that the term can be dehumanizing, but I feel it makes sense given Friedman’s background on Wall Street.
Wally’s point still stands because dreaming about prospects as assets for future trades is less exciting than dreaming about those prospects OWN skills possibly fitting into the Dodgers OWN major league roster.
“For me, I find it better to view them as assets”
Yep. They are there to get guys like Kwan and Miller.
Ha! I forgot he was a Wall Street hotshot.
Yep, a disappointing deadline. Really wanted AF to get Kwan and one of the stud closers.
Call is an improvement over Conforto. Stewart will deepen the bullpen if he stays healthy. Happy for Outman.
San Diego traded:
SS Leo De Vries (#1)
RHP Braden Nett (#3)
LHP Boston Bateman (#4)
SS Cobb Hightower (#6)
RHP Ryan Bergert (#7)
RHP Tyson Neighbors (#12)
RHP Henry Baez (#13)
RHP Eduarniel Nunez (#17)
C Brandon Valenzuela (#26)
1B Victor Figueroa (#29)
RHP Tanner Smith
RHP Brandon Butterworth
RHP Stephen Kolek
Dodgers traded:
-RHP Dustin May
-OF James Outman
-C Hunter Feduccia
-MiLB RHP Eriq Swan (#17)
-MiLB RHP Sean Paul Liñan (#15)
Brewers DFAd KHRP Bryan Hudson and RHRP Elvis Peguero. Some good arms now in DFA limbo.
AF likes to bring back former Dodger pitchers. Maybe Hudson winds up at OKC in the next few days
Pressley is out there too. I could see AF signing him as a fixer upper.
Per the trade value simulator :
Today the #RedSox reportedly acquired RHP Dustin May ($2.3M surplus trade value) from the #Dodgers in exchange for OFs James Tibbs ($9.1M) and Zach Ehrhard ($2.5M).
The deal is rejected by our model as an overpay by Boston.
Today the #Dodgers reportedly acquired OF Alex Call ($3.4M surplus trade value) from the #Nationals in exchange for RHPs Sean Paul Liñan ($2.3M) and Eriq Swan ($1.7M) ($4.0M total).
The deal is accepted by our model.
Today the #Dodgers reportedly acquired RHP Brock Stewart ($6.0M surplus trade value) from the #MNTwins in exchange for OF James Outman ($1.3M).
The deal is accepted by our model as a moderate underpay by Los Angeles.
Today the #Rays reportedly acquired C Hunter Feduccia ($1.3M surplus trade value) from the #Dodgers in exchange for LHP Adam Serwinowski ($1.8M), RHP Paul Gervase ($0.4M) and C Ben Rortvedt (-$0.2M) ($2.0M total).
The deal is accepted by our model.
Based on the trade values, I’m surprised that BTV accepts the Stewart/Outman deal. Seems like a major underpay for the Dodgers according to the numbers I see. Not that I’m complaining, you understand.
I have a different take on this.
I think over the next 5 years Outman will put up more WAR than Stewart. All he needs is different hitting instructors and a chance to play every day.
I’m not going to argue with you on that one. Hope Outman does really well. But I also hope Stewart does really well.
James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard have both been assigned to Tulsa. That means two of the following OF need to be moved in some capacity:
· Damon Keith
· Kole Myers
· Kyle Nevin
· Chris Newell
· Ezequiel Pagan
This also crowds the field further blocking Zyhir Hope and Josue De Paula. Sirota is out for the year, and Eduardo Quintero and Kendall George will stick in Great Lakes.
Deleted.
James Tibbs III debuts at #7 on LAD prospect list and Zach Ehrhard debuts at #25. That is now 5 OF in top 10 (4 top overall 100), 6 of top 12, 7 of top 13, and 10 of top 30. The rest of the top 30 include:
· 10 RHP
· 5 SS
· 3 LHP
· 1 3B
· 1 1B/3B
After pitching his best game as a professional, Maddux Bruns has finally dropped out of top 30.
