Dodgers Bullpen Chokes Up Another One

Another great start for an LAD starting pitcher, and another piss poor relief outing.  The Dodgers score 4 runs off Cristopher Sánchez, Shohei Ohtani pitches 5.0 no-hit innings, and Justin Wrobleski gives up 5 runs from the 6 batters he faced.  Dave Roberts left Wrobleski in after 5 straight hard hit balls (one out).  I am sure the reason will be because Brandon Marsh is not as good against LHP.  So he goes by a piece of paper from a computer geek instead of what his eyes are seeing.  He hit another missile off LHRP Anthony Banda in the 8th.  Shhh.  Don’t tell Marsh he can’t hit LHP.

If there was a game where Ohtani should have stretched it to 6.0 innings, this should have been it.  He was at 68 pitches.  How can you trust stretching him to 6.0 + in the playoffs if he is not ready now?  Sanchez goes 7.0 innings and 102 pitches.  He is ready for October.

You want to develop a game plan based on the mountains of stats, go ahead.  What should I throw to the batter if he steps out of the box with his left foot?  What’s he looking for if he twirls the bat from right to left?  But once the game is in front of you, please

Then again, Edgardo Henriquez was not a lot better, except the HR he gave up was a solo shot.

The Dodgers batters battled back to tie the game, and Blake Treinen gives up a 3-run HR to a .194 hitter.

The Dodgers have 11 games to go, and there is not one reliever I would be comfortable with without a 10 run lead.  The four with SF will be an event.  And the 6 away games next week in Arizona and Seattle figure to be very challenging.  Is it time to option Wrobo and bring up Andrew Heaney?  Bring back Ben Casparius?

Brock Stewart made a rehab appearance, and pitched a scoreless 1.0 inning.  1 hit and 1 BB.  The talk is that he will get activated this weekend.  Will he?  Who goes?  Maybe Kirby Yates has a toe bruise?  Treinen has some injury?

This was not a good game.  The starting pitchers need to get ready for complete games in the playoffs, because if they have to rely on their bullpen, it could be 3 and out.

Yesterday, Phil brought up a point that I have brought up on many occasions…holding runners on and the running game.  I have thought that the running game against was a problem for LAD.  I thought that back to the beginning of the 2023 season when Arizona ran silly on the Dodgers, the year that the running game rules had an impact.  When I said that IMO the Dodgers were not doing enough to halt the running game, I was told that my take was silly and I had no evidence or support for such a statement.  I could not argue the point because I did not then, and do not now, have access to the data. But I do believe my eyes, and on those early 2023 days, the DBacks kicked the Dodgers behinds because they ran wild on them.

The Dodgers opened the 2023 season with a 4 game home series vs Arizona.  For the first three games, the Dodgers had 0 SB and 2 caught stealing.  Arizona did not attempt to run.  But the Dodgers had 6 HR to Arizona’s 2.  Dodgers were 2-1 in those 3 games. After the third game, I remember Torey Luvullo saying that the Dodgers are built to slug, and the DBacks are built to run.  In the 4th game, the DBacks stole 4 bases to the Dodgers 1.  The Dodgers lone run was a Will Smith HR, while Arizona manufactured 2, with 1 directly a result of 2 Corbin Carroll SB.  The second was a result of a squeeze play in the 9th.  Dodgers lost 2-1.  Arizona was figuring out who they were.

After 2 home games against Colorado, the Dodgers went to Arizona to play another 4 game series.  In this one, Arizona stole 8 bases, no caught steals.  The Dodgers did not attempt a steal, but Miguel Vargas was picked off.  Arizona matched the Dodgers with 4 HRs each.  Arizona won 3 of the 4.  LAD needed HRs to win, but Arizona did not.  That is when I really started to notice again the running game, which used to be so prevalent with the Dodgers game.

At some point in the not so distant past, some computer geek was running numbers and concluded that there is too much risk in SB, and that the HR is the biggest factor in wins.  Dodgers brain trust complied and started to focus on slug, and less on running.  Hit and run, run and hit, hitting behind the runner, all concepts the Dodgers used to excel in were no longer in vogue.

The Dodgers have reached the playoffs the last 12 years, and this should be 13, with 4 NL Pennants, 2 World Championships, and 1 stolen World Championship.  So they are doing something right.  But could they improve?

For the last three years, the Dodgers W-L record in Xtra Inning games:

  • 2023 – 6-6
  • 2024 – 9-7
  • 2025 – 7-7

In one run games:

  • 2023 – 16-15
  • 2024 – 21-17
  • 2025 – 22-23 – 16-9 to July, and 6-14 since.

Since 2023, the Dodgers are 16th in the league with 326 SB, and 5th best with 71 caught stealing.  But they are #2 in HRs behind NYY (710 to 702).  Only Atlanta at 690 is close.  And yet the Dodgers are 1st in runs by a healthy margin over the last 3 years.

For a strategy to focus on SLG over SB and the running game seems to justify what the Dodgers are doing.  But it does not mean they cannot work more on running and SB to win more of the Xtra Inning games and 1-run games.  45 one run games with 12 games to play is a lot, and the Dodgers seem to lose more than they win.  Poor relief and inability to manufacture runs????  If the Dodgers were 25-20 in those one-run games, the Division would be much closer.  But they are not, and they are fighting to stay ahead of the Padres.

Overall strategy works over a 162 game schedule, but maybe not so much in the playoffs.  The pitching is better, and the ability to SLG is minimized.

Perhaps strategies are changing. SB are up across the board for the affiliates:

  • OKC – 191 (#2 in PCL)
  • Tulsa – 169 (#5 in Texas League)
  • Great Lakes – 265 (#2 in Midwest League)
  • Rancho Cucamonga – 290 (#1 in California League by 71)

But, back to Phil’s comment about Treinen not holding runners on, that seems to be a problem for all of the LAD pitchers.  Statcast has a recently added stat for pitchers called, NET BASES PREVENTED.   It is defined by a sum of advances prevented and outs added to the pitcher.

The only Dodgers pitcher in the top 50 is Yamamoto.  He has +3 for 50th.  Clayton Kershaw is the other LAD pitcher in the top 100.  Kersh is +2 for 93rd.

The others:

  • Shohei Ohtani – +1
  • Tanner Scott – +1
  • Alex Vesia – 0
  • Justin Wrobleski – 0
  • Edgardo Henriquez – 0
  • Jack Dreyer – -1
  • Blake Snell – -2
  • Kirby Yates – -3
  • Tyler Glasnow – -3
  • Ben Casparius – -3
  • Anthony Banda – -3
  • Blake Treinen – -3

Andrew Heaney who seems like a possible add to the pen has +2.

Considering only qualified pitchers for NET BASES PREVENTED calculation, here is the breakdown by potential playoff teams.

  • Dodgers – 6 pitchers > 0; 4 = 0; 10 < 0
  • Phillies – 8 > 0; 2 = 0; 3 < 0
  • Brewers – 10 > 0; 1 = 0; 4 < 0
  • Cubs – 8 >0; 4 = 0; 3 < 0
  • Padres – 7 > 0; 5 = 0; 4 < 0
  • Mets – 12 > 0; 2 = 0; 1 < 0
  • DBacks – 11 > 0; 0 = 0; 4 < 0
  • Giants – 10 > 0; 2 = 0; 5 < 0
  • Reds – 7 > 0; 3 = 0; 5 < 0

Is holding runners on important for the Dodgers?  You have to assume yes, but it certainly is not a paramount metric they like to emphasize.

This team is dreadful to watch. They get good starting pitching then the bullpen blows the game. I don’t think a team in the playoffs is worried about facing the Dodgers. When these other teams have great bullpens. There’s no fire in this team. Because they won it last year. The team that has fire in its eyes and wants a world series ring is that Phillies team and the Mariners. Go watch there games and you see a total team atmosphere who wants a ring.

You can question the results Bradley, but not their heart. Teams with no fire do not comeback like they have the last two games. Blame it on the pens for sure, but not on the players. You can bet your ass they do not like losing like that.

True I am saying last year they had the fire to get a ring. This year they won a ring last year not the same fire in this dodger team there missing 5 players from last years team that were all big pieces in winning a ring.

Kiermaier retired, no chance he was coming back. Lux was traded, and he was not all that important to their winning and surely isn’t missed that much. Hudson retired. I don’t see anyone else who is gone that was that much of a contributor. This team has better starting pitching at this point. If you are thinking about Flaherty, he was fine during the regular season. His post season? Not so much, in five games pitched, his ERA for the three series combined was 7.35. He gave up 18 runs in 22 innings. Other than his game 1 starts against the Mets and Yankees, he got hammered. Players change every year. No way the intensity levels stay the same. Last year’s team won despite so many injuries. This year’s team has not been good since July. Injuries to Muncy, Smith and others have played a part, plus the fact they have been forced to use players who otherwise would not even be in the majors. You can also factor in that because they won last year, there is a HUGE target on their backs.

Those Phillies are a tough nut to crack.

if we are being honest with ourselves, we should
have won both games and to have lost them both clouds our judgement.

Our Starting Pitching is incredible. Joe was reeling off stats that made the mind boggle. The lineup looks potent and long with Max and Tommy Tanks back in the fold, and long term slumpers, Mookie and Teo looking much better we really appear to be peaking at the right time!

The Pen looks shell shocked and devoid of confidence. It’s easy to criticise AF , but off season acquisitions Scott and Yates have not performed but more worryingly last year’s hero, Blake Treinen looks like he’s totally lost it. Like a rabbit in the headlights. No one could have foreseen the key back end pieces unraveling like they have. Add Kopech, and the no show of Graterol and we find ourselves in a bind.

However, we’ve all watched enough baseball to know that the regular season counts for nothing once the playoffs begin, and the slate is wiped clean. The Dodgers will be hoping that the first couple of outings are clean, and confidence will grow.

I just think Yates and Treinen have run out of time. Scott will be selected but I do think we’ll be seeing Heaney up shortly to see what he’s got left in the tank. It’s RH relief where we are short. Sheehan obviously gets in, but the door is open for a wild card (in the wild card!).

I know these defeats are hard to take but I seriously see massive improvement from
a couple of weeks back – we are still trending the right way. Keep the faith, and fingers crossed for Will. We need him.

Make ohtani the closer if he is only throwing 2 innings and they can’t hit him in playoffs that be a big boost then have him start then teams will feel worries ohtani coming in so we better havw a lead or there in trouble. He closes the world games for japan so why not this year in the playoffs.

He just batted in the seventh or eighth, not going to bat for 2-3 more innings. Seems like he could warm up and pitch the ninth. I’m not saying that will happen but it’s not a ridiculous suggestion. I’m sure the front office has kicked around that suggestion. It’s called brainstorming.

Ohtani a no hitter through 5, Dodgers with 4 run lead, one out later it was 5-4 Phillies. Don’t know if I’ve ever seen that before.

The Dodgers do not have a Major League bullpen. Not at the moment anyway, and the moment is two weeks from the playoffs.

Is this fixable?

Well, 2 week ago we had a 3-0 lead, with 8 2/3 of no hitting the other team. And within 5 min, we lost 4-3.

So nothing is impossible with this squad!

Wayne

Assuming the bullpen can even be fixed this year, the “fix” must come BEFORE the post season begins. Waiting for the playoffs to flip-the-switch on this bullpen AIN’T happenin’! We’ve got to see positive results in the regular season. So if Heaney, Sheehan, Sasaki, Stewart, etc. out of the pen are part of their solutions, then employ these wholesale changes NOW before we get to the playoffs.

The other weakness that must be fixed NOW, is hitting with runners on base. They simply have to show better “clutch” in those situations. Bases loaded against the Phills last night, and they couldn’t come thru with the big hit. That won’t get it done in the playoffs.

A blind man could c wrobleski didn’t have it. His fb was 94 n when he is on it is 98-99. Breaking ball no life. What is really frustrating is Roberts just leaves them out there to get killed and us to lose. The Phillies do not have a potent lineup. Past Schwarber and Harper are a couple hitters hitting 200 and these guys are killing us. All teams run wild on us especially without Smith or Rushing. Bad combination pitchers can’t throw strikes or hold runners. The current catcher can’t throw. We have to get Stewart back to give us a reliable righty. Vesia should be a reliable lefty. Add Sheehan n subtract a couple of liability’s and our pen could get better. The Phillies have great pitching but their offense is middle of the pack. Our bullpen is making them look like Babe Ruth.

Don’t look at their batting averages. Look at their OPS’s. Then look at our lineup and their OPS’s. And even their lone blind squirrel finds the seats against the Dodgers bullpen.

The Phillies are better than the Dodgers at this point in the season. They are proving it.

Personally, I really like Treinen, he has been very clutch for LA several times, but this year, just like when Yates comes in, I cringe. I said the other day that you never know what a reliever is going to have on any given day. It was obvious that the Phillies were seeing Wrobleski well. I think Ohtani should have pitched at least one more inning. Roberts was using Wrobo based on his last outing in SF when he mowed the Giants down after Kershaw’s short outing. Wrobo is used to pitch multiple innings. But he ran into a buzz saw last night. The only really dangerous hitters he faced in SF were Devers, Adames and Chapman. The Phillies on the other hand have been hot for more than a week, even the bottom of their order has been better. But allowing guys with BA’s around .200 to beat you? Marchan got the rally started after Stott grounded out. None of the hits off of Wrobo were soft. They were all tagged. Marsh who hit the go-ahead 3-run homer is having the best year of his career. He was good field, not much bat as an Angel. But he is only hitting .192 against LHP this year. LA got off of the mat and tied the game. But Treinen’s 9th inning flameout doomed them. Giving up a 3-run homer to a guy who when the game started was hitting under .200. Sad. Yates, Treinen, Wrobleski, to me have pitched their way off of the playoff roster, but they still have to make it to the playoffs, which after the last two days, is not a certainty.

Not surprised at all, Weston Wilson was under .200 when he hit his homer off of Dreyer to erase that lead. Just irritated that a pitcher as good as Treinen throws a slug like that a cookie.

Jeff, nice write-up today. I feel the same– that Doc does not have a good feel for the game, especially the pitching staff.

It appears mgt misread the BP situation by thinking our new arms (Scott, Yates) and returning arms (Trinein, Graterol, Phillips, Kopech) would be playoff ready in September.

It’s about time the makes hard decisions. A few come to mind:

  • Release Yates
  • Don’t put Kershaw on the roster for a 3-game series (and maybe even a 5-game)–the team cannot afford having his slider not be “on” thus allowing opposing hitters to sit on his 90 mph faster, giving up 4-runs in 2 innings.
  • Figure out how to get Ohtani to be a clutch hitter–ie, no pitching, closer role, shake-up the batting order, …
  • Test new arms in closer role to find a spark.

Finally, I realize I am in the minority on this, but I find it incredulous that we talk about Muncy’s impact on the line-up, yet he often sits against LHP. Having a key hitter able to be neutralized during a tight game is a liability.

Kershaw will be on the roster regardless. Doc has not had all of his tools for his toolbox. You can never predict injuries. Phillips was lost early, guys like Trevino, Garcia, were brought up to replace them. Kopech is obviously rusty. Vesia spent time on the IL. Performance is ALWAYS on the player. Doc could not have known that Wrobo, who was so good his last time out, would be unable to get more than one out against LH hitters.

Would not be surprised if the FO decides to go with Hurt and Casparius on the post season roster in place of Trienen and Yates.

Jeff Dominique
Jeff Dominique

I can see Casparius for Yates or Treinen, but I am not sure Kyle Hurt is ready. In 5 appearances, 7.1 IP, he has allowed 10 hits with 5 BB for a 2.05 WHIP. In addition, he has shown no ability to going back to back, or even every other day. In his 5 appearances, he has had 3 days off, 4 days off, 3 days off, and 4 days off. That is not a post season bullpen pitcher. I never thought that Hurt would be as far along as he is in his recovery. I see the future looks promising for him, but not now.

Brock Stewart and Paul Gervase are better options than Kyle Hurt. Andrew Heaney should be brought up now and Wrobo should be optioned.  They have 11 games to figure this out.

BTW, I am in no way wanting the Dodgers to move on from Wrobo. I do believe he will have a bright future with LAD. This was a horrible outing. Mariano Rivera had them as well, and no I am not comparing the two. Wrobo was nearly flawless in his last 5 appearances spanning 7.1 IP, 5 hits, 1 BB, and 13 K. He had not given up a HR since July 11 before last night. He should not have been allowed to face Brandon Marsh. Too much analytics and not enough managing from what is in front of you.

Michael Norris

Casparius has an ERA of almost 5 this season. I would not have any of them on the postseason roster. Hurt and Heaney have pitched well but not a lot. Hurt has just 7.1 innings allowing 10 hits and 2 runs. He has 5 walks, and 9 Ks. Too many base runners for 7 innings of work, 2 an inning. Heaney has six innings pitched, has walked one, allowed 2 hits and struck out 9. I don’t see Hurt as an option, but Heaney could be a weapon with his strikeout stuff.

Well, Raliegh did it, he passed Mantle for the most HRs by a switch hitter in a season with his 55th. Not only is Ohtani the only Dodger to ever hit 50 in a season, now he has done it twice. You cannot count on both hands and your toes how many winnable games the Dodgers have blown this year.

Yes, Big Dumper does not have the same ring to it as The Commerce Comet. Nor does The Big Show beat The Bambino or The Yankee Clipper. Ruth never struck out more than 93 times in one season. DiMaggio struck out about 360 times in his career. Ohtani has matched that in two years. 2 more last night, now at 173. Just think how good he could really be if he just was more selective.

Great post Jeff.
Regarding the lack of holding runners, I’ve said that I just don’t think it’s an emphasis for the Dodgers. Their philosophy is to out slug the opponent. They don’t care if they give up a free 90 or 180 feet.
That drives me crazy. A walk turns into an RBI way too easily.

I’ve heard various scenarios about Ohtani’s pitching role for the playoff, including putting him on the shelf. He has to pitch in some role. He’s just too damn good to not pitch. I hope he starts but I could see him close with this group of back-end relievers. I too think last night was a perfect time to milk another inning out of him. Pulling the plug at 68 pitches is pretty conservative.

And finally, as others have mentioned, a blind man could see it was time to pull Wrobleski after Harper’s double making it 4 consecutive hits. He shouldn’t have been in the game to give up the dinger to Marsh.

I’ve praised Doc in the past for his use of the bullpen and the “match-up” philosophy. But that isn’t the case now. He seems to make obvious mistakes. I can only assume that he makes those decisions and not just following orders. That’s been a question for years. If he disagreed with orders, why would he not do what he thought was best for the team? Why take the heat for decisions like leaving Worbs in the game or starting Banda as an opener the previous game, if he didn’t agree? Is Doc that good of a soldier?

Lest we forget, Joe Posnanski offered up a summary today of just how bad Blake Treinen has been. I see him and Yates off the playoff roster, I hope.

“And the lamentable Blake Treinen, who seems determined to singlehandedly ruin the Dodgers’ season, gave up the three-run bomb to Marchán that ended the Dodgers’ hopes.
Treinen has been on some kind of run. …
On September 6, against Baltimore — this was the game where Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw 8⅔ no-hit innings but had his no-hitter broken up by a Jackson Holliday homer — Treinen came in with a three-run lead and needed just one out. A double, hit-by-pitch, wild pitch, two walks and a single later, he walked off the field with the loss.
Six days later, through no fault of his own, he took a lamentable loss by starting the 10th inning and thus being responsible for the zombie runner that MLB put on second base. That was really Tanner Scott’s loss (the whole bullpen is imploding) but the official was given to Treinen.
On Monday, he took the loss when he allowed a double steal and then gave up a sacrifice fly to J.T. Realmuto.
And Tuesday, yeah, he gave up the big home run.
Tryouts are over. He and Yates along with Kopech need to have no roles in the playoffs.

Watford, I’m personally NOT in favor of trying Ohtani in the outfield at this late stage of the season. If he wants to give that a shot next Spring Training, I’m way good with that. But not having experience in the outfield would be a problem. There’s way more to it than running down fly balls. Like throwing to the right base or cut-off man. Things that Pages still hasn’t mastered.
Ohtani is a smart guy and a baseball player. But that would be a big and desperate ask at this point in the season.
But I think he must pitch; especially at Dodger Stadium where he is drastically better than on the road. What’s not to like about 100mph and 7 different pitches?

Since most people seem to feel that Shohei gets to do whatever he wants, I wonder, long term, if he would prefer to DH on days he doesn’t pitch or play the outfield, or maybe some of each. I guess we won’t know unless he tells us, and of course playing the outfield adds dramatically to the chance of injury, but it’s still interesting to contemplate.
