Dodgers NLDS Preview

Dodgers vs. Phillies NLDS schedule

Game 1: Saturday, October 4 at Philadelphia, 3:08 p.m. or 3:38 p.m. PT (TBS)
Game 2: Monday, October 6 at Philadelphia, time TBA (TBS)
Game 3: Wednesday, October 8 at Los Angeles, time TBA (TBS)
Game 4: Thursday, October 9 at Los Angeles, time TBA (TBS) – if necessary
Game 5: Saturday, October 11 at Philadelphia, time TBA (TBS) – if necessary

The way the NLDS is set up, the Phillies could go with just 3 SP: Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, and Ranger Suárez.  Thursday would be the Game 1 starter’s normal rest in a 5-man rotation, which Philadelphia utilizes.  All three are LHSP.  If they wanted to mix in a RHSP they could go with Aaron Nola, but they could just go with their Big 3, and piggy back Nola and Walker Buehler.

Dodgers’ pitching is in flux.  We know that Shohei Ohtani will be the starter in Game 1.  After that it gets murky.  Blake Snell can start Game 2 on normal 6-man rotation rest, Yoshinobu Yamamoto can start Game 3 exactly one week from his Wild Card gem.

Glasnow can piggyback with Ohtani for a couple innings on Game 1, and come back to start Game 4.  That would be normal rest in a 5-man rotation.  Ohtani could then start Game 5.  Clayton Kershaw or Emmet Sheehan or Justin Wrobleski could conceivably piggyback.  But if it goes to Game 5, all hands on deck.  Win or go home.

We have already heard that Kersh and Banda will be on the NLDS roster.  Who departs?  Henriquez is a good guess for one.  After that?  With Kersh, do they need Wrobo?  That is where I think they will go.

My guess as the pitchers:

  • Blake Snell (L)
  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto (R)
  • Tyler Glasnow (R)
  • Roki Sasaki (R)
  • Blake Treinen (R)
  • Alex Vesia (L)
  • Tanner Scott (L)
  • Jack Dreyer (L)
  • Emmet Sheehan (R)
  • Clayton Kershaw (L)
  • Anthony Banda (L)

That is a LHP heavy staff. While Philadelphia has fairly close splits against RHP and LHP, they are decidedly more prolific against RHP.

  • Against LHP – .253/.322/.425/.747 – That ranks #9, #8, #6, #6 respectively in MLB. They also have 464 K against LHP, most in MLB.
  • Against RHP – .261/.330/.434/.764 – That ranks #2, #4, #5, #4 respectively in MLB. They have 873 K against RHP, for 5th best in MLB.

Contrast that with the Dodgers:

  • Against LHP – .255/.319/.446/.765 – That ranks #7, #11, #2, #3 respectively in MLB. They also have 378 K against LHP, 16th most in MLB.
  • Against RHP – .252/.331/.439/.770 – That ranks #10, #3, #3, #3 respectively in MLB. They have 873 K against RHP, for 5th best in MLB.

Overall:

  • Philadelphia – .258/.328/.431/.759 – That ranks #2, #4, #4, #4 respectively in MLB.
  • LAD – .253/.327/.441/.768 – That ranks #6, #5, #2, #2 respectively in MLB.

wRISP:

  • Philadelphia – .258/.337/.438/.775 – That ranks #11, #13, #7, #8 respectively in MLB.
  • LAD – .277/.362/.475/.837 – That ranks #3, #1, #1, #1 respectively in MLB.

For as much complaining that LAD fans do about hitting wRISP, the team is awfully productive in that role.

There are enough open dates in the schedule (3) that AF/BG/Doc could decide on an 11 man staff for the NLDS.  If they want a 12th, Ben Casparius would be my choice.

Here are the pitching stats for both teams for the full season and since the All Star Break.  Both teams’  pitching staffs have changed since the beginning of the year.

One big change the Phillies made at the trade deadline was to add RHRP Jhoan Duran to their roster.  Not that it makes a lot of difference heading into the NLDS, Duran has not pitched well against LAD this year.  3 games, 4.0 IP, 3 runs, 4 hits, 2 HR, 1 BB, 2 K, 6.75 ERA.  NLDS is a new season.

For all the grief LAD gets for their bullpen (and rightfully so), Philadelphia is not better.  For the full season, LAD was better at BAA and K, while the Phillies were better at limiting BB and HR.  Their ERA was the same.  Since the All Star Break, LAD was better at ERA, BAA, and K, the Phillies again were better at limiting BB and HR.

For the season, LAD has 46 saves while Philly has 47.  For blown saves, LAD has 25 and Philadelphia has 26.  You cannot get much closer.  Both teams are net saves at 21.

Also, let’s not forget that the Dodgers very easily could have swept the Phillies last month at Dodger Stadium.  In Game 1, the Dodgers were leading 3-1 going into the 7th when Philadelphia scored 3 due to some shoddy relief pitching by Jack Dreyer.  LAD tied it up, only for Alex Vesia to give up a go-ahead HR.  After a perfect 9th by Tanner Scott, the Dodgers tied it up again.  Blake Treinen allowed a double steal in the 10th and the Phillies got a sac fly to go ahead again.  The Dodgers could not match that run.

In Game 2, the Dodgers had a 4-0 lead going into the 6th.  Justin Wrobleski had a meltdown and was undoubtedly allowed to stay in too long (3-4 batters). Edgardo Henriquez did not help by giving up a solo HR allowing Phillies to go up 6-4.  The Dodgers tied it up again, only for Treinen to get two quick outs in the 9th, then a double, IBB, and 3-run HR for the final losing score of 9-6.

Yes you need 27 outs, but this is a different bullpen.  It is a different Blake Treinen.  Henriquez should not be on the roster, and Kersh should replace Wrobo. The Dodgers now have Roki Sasaki who is a difference maker, or at least he was in the Wild Card. Those were the three troublesome LAD pitchers (Treinen, Wrobo, and Henriquez) in the series.

I will wait until both LAD’s and Philadelphia’s position player rosters are reported and then do a position by position analysis.

Just like the Wild Card, the NLDS is a different season.  These are two evenly matched teams.  I expect the Dodgers to win a very good series.

Manny Machado has played in 14 post season series. He has a career .209 BA in those series. 6 of those series were Wild Card series. Two with the Orioles and 4 with the Pudknockers. He was 2-7 with the O’s with 1 ribbie. 7-44 with 3 homers and 8 driven in for the Puds. That is a .159 BA my friends. The only good series he had was against the Mets in 22. His best postseason series was against the Dodgers in 22 when he hit .357 with a homer and 2 driven in. For LA in 18, he hit .176 in the LDS against the Braves, he did have 2 homers and drove in 6. Against the Brewers in the LCS, he hit .296 with a homer and 3 driven in. Against the Red Sox, he was 4-22, all singles, and he struck out to end the series. He is very good during the season, but his postseason stats suck.

Dean is 28, and he will be a minor league free agent at the end of the Dodgers season. He was brought up for defense and speed if a pinch runner was needed. Considering the fact that he had not seen a batted ball since the Comets season ended, that he even got close to catching that fly ball is pretty amazing. It did not affect the outcome of the game, so no harm no foul.

It seems clear to me that Kike should just start in LF during October, thus minimizing the need (if there was ever a need) for Conforto.

We still do not have a centerfielder. But we may not need one for the remainder of this season.

Rojas could win the 10th Man Award. Now that Mookie has figured out how to throw to first base AND has rediscovered his swing, I’ll admit I was wrong about moving him to shortstop. I still believe it could shorten his career if he’s left there and would prefer the team address that position (and center) in the off season.

It’s my opinion this post season will be win or lost with the offense. I’m not at all sold on this team’s ability to shut down offenses in innings 7-9. Hope I am wrong about that.

I think Roberts has said, although that could change, is that Conforto will be on NLDS roster. For ‘matchup’ reasons. Fans may hate it, but if Smith is ready to play, they don’t need three catchers and Rushing would be odd man out

With the Phillies having 3 LH starting pitchers I don’t see much playing time for Conforto. He won’t be in the starting line-up and he won’t be a late inning defensive replacement or pinch hitter. He might make the NLDS roster, but we fortunately won’t be seeing much of him.

The Phillies added Jhoan Duran to their bullpen. The Dodgers added Brock Stewart.
The Phillies added Harrison Bader to their OF, and the Dodgers brought in Alex Call.
The return of Sasaki goes a long way toward fixing the bullpen.
But I’d feel more confident with Bader in CF and Pages in RF.

You may be right, of course. But I think you, like Mark, are placing too much stock on the player rankings. These are obviously highly subjective–and we’ve all seen highly rated prospects like Cartaya flop and some late draft picks (Piazza!) succeed. Lux was hyped as a future superstar… but he’s pretty much just OK.
Keep in mind that Dodgers’ system is supposedly rich with talent. Thus, the #6 Dodgers prospect should theoretically be better than the Pads’ #6, right?
As an academic exercise, we could come up with a list of Dodgers prospects who share that exact same rankings with what the Padres’ dealt. Who would it be? I’d be OK with trading the highly rated Alex Freeland–but not the highly rated Emil Morales. The A’s, I suspect, would have little interest in Freeland because they already have Wilson. Perhaps DePaula + Quintero or ???
You are too quick, I’d argue, in labeling Bobby Miller and Bruns as “busts.” Miller, especially, demonstrated his potential at the ML level, and appeared to be making an nice transition to relief. Both Miller and Bruns were first round picks by the Dodgers’ vaunted staff. Do you think Dodger coaches consider them busts? Will they be cut loose?
A lot of young pitchers labor for years before they blossom–and they and several peers are blocked by the powerhouse Dodgers. Koufax was a so-so pitcher for years before he transformed into the GOAT. Sometimes a change of scenery–new coaches, new hope–works wonders. Perhaps the A’s would have said, “No, you keep Miller and Bruns–we’ll take Jackson Ferris and Knack.”
I’d think about.
Ferris is said to be the BEST pitching prospect the Dodgers have. But look at his competition: For the next few years, the six-man rotation should include Snell, Yamamoto, Shohei, Glasnow, Sasaki, Sheehan–with Gavin Stone, River Ryan, Gonsolin and ?? coming back from injury.
And if you lose Ferris in a deal for Mason Freaking Miller, you end up with Mason Freaking Miller, capable of putting a 104.5 mph heater on the paint at the knees.
I’ve banged this drum for a couple of seasons after first seeing Miller’s next-level highlights. It’s obvious that Miller is absolutely an elite talent, comparable to Skenes or Skubal. The fact that he was with the A’s meant that at some point he’d be dealt.
The Dodgers, I argued, should be in on him in a big way rather than miss out. He wasn’t going to fall into the Dodgers’ lap the way Sasaki did. He’d require a lot more risk than AF exercised in opening a checkbook for Snell. The Dodgers have the luxury of avoiding risk.
So kudos to Preller for swinging the deal. Maybe Miller goes back to starting and anchors the Pads’ rotation for years to come. Way too soon to judge this trade.
But soon we’ll get a better idea if the AF should have dealt for Jhoan Duran and Harrison Bader.

Well Bader isn’t a Dodger and most likely was not on AF’s radar. They feel they have a CF in Pages for the near future, even though we fans do not.

Maybe, but at the time of the trade, Bader was hitting .258 with some power. He was mostly playing left field. LA is overloaded with RH hitting outfielders, that is why they signed Conforto. They did not need another RH hitter. They opted for Call over Bader as a cheaper option. Better contact hitter. They had no idea Bader would hit over .300 after the trade.

So the Dodgers ‘plan’ was we have enough guys, they just have to get healthy. So they ‘added’ Sasaki, Kersh, Glasnow and Sheehan to BP. But also added Kike and now maybe Treinen. Maybe Muncy and Smith ready to be added.

Roberts was just being careful since he did not think Smith could catch all three games if needed. It worked out fine giving him extra time to heal. He will catch some in this series I would venture to say with all of the Philly’s lefties lined up to pitch.

Would have been fine with me. Tatis Jr. and Machado pretty much invisible during that series. Credit Padre pitching with that win. They kept the Cubs quiet. But credit the Cubs pen with stopping a Padres rally after the homer. Machado is not a great post season player, Tatis Jr. on the other hand, has usually been a force in playoff games. Not this time, Cubs had his number.

I could see the Dodgers trading Rushing this winter. It is painfully obvious that they see Rortvedt as a better option as the backup. In 18 games, he tied Miggy for the team lead in sacrifice hits with 3. He has 2 in 2 games in the playoffs. He has gotten clutch hits, and the pitching staff has loved his catching. Rushing is a guy who needs to play every day to maximize his power and skills. I would use Dalton in a trade for a solid CF.

The Rortvedt revelation could prompt some interesting moves.
Rushing for a frontline CF or 3B seems like a good idea to me… but whom?
Wild idea: A package to bring back former Dodgers’ prospect Oneil Cruz, the 6-7 former SS who hits the ball as hard as Shohei and is one of the fastest, most exciting players in the game.
Mookie, I think, will play another season at SS–but perhaps he’ll be ready to shift to 2B. If so, a young SS with a great glove could help. (But Kim is a option for SS too.)
I think Max may just have one more good season in him, and he’s better off in a platoon.
Alex Freeland had some good moments in the majors, but right now it’s hard to imagine him forcing his way into the lineup.

These two teams are very evenly matched and it should be an excellent series. I’m only sorry that it’s a 5 instead of 7 game series. I think both teams deserve to have the winner decided in a longer series.

Rortvedt has been an absolute eye opener. I wonder if AF just grabbed him to have an extra body behind the plate at OKC or if they actually saw something there. In any case, add me to the list of folks who feel that both Rushing and team would be better off if he was traded this winter.

He’ll never reach anywhere near his potential playing 2 or 3 days a week so why not move him for a position we need help with.

If Shohei became an outfielder/pitcher next year, Rushing could be the DH. That ain’t happening.

If Freddie retired after his contract was up in 2027, Rushing could be the first baseman. That ain’t happening, especially since there might not even be a 2027 season due to labor problems. Freddie will no doubt eventually sign an extension.

I would be very surprised to see Rushing as a left fielder, since they gave up on that experiment when he got here.

Assuming Teo is back next year, I think we could live with an outfield of Teo/Edman/Pages/Call/Kim for another year or two until one or more of our good young outfielders are ready.

I can’t see Max here as a regular for more than another year so my first choice would be to trade for a third baseman. As with Busch, we could move Rushing for a high end third base prospect who might be a year away. Who that might be, I’ll leave to the experts.

4-Gens

Agree, need a 3rd baseman. Max gets hot against bad teams and piles on when games are in hand, which pad his stats, is injury prone and not reliable, and has Ltd range at 3rd. Most importantly he is easily neutralized by LH pitching.

Going back to the WS, Max has 2 hits in 7 games. He has a few walks, yes, but we need power from corner infield positions.

Hopefully he proves me wrong, but don’t expect much against Philly—we’ll see if he even plays against LH starters.

Max Muncy averages 34 homers a year, his BA is .229. He does not as you say, load up against bad teams. He plays his best against LA’s division rivals. How many 10 million dollar third basemen hit 34 homers a year? Carrer stats vs NL west teams. Az, 11 homers, 39 RBIs,.757 OPS, Colo: 24 HRs, 74 RBIs,.893OPS, SF 26 homers 60 driven in .937OPS. SD:19HR, 64 driven in .772 OPS. Max is 34. He will be 35 next season. His team option is for 10 million dollars. They got more out of him this year in 100 games than they did from Conforto for less money. He, Ohtani and Freddie are the left-handed power on this team. Conforto was supposed to add to that. As for Max’s defense, he is no gold glover that is for sure, but he is more than adequate. His best position defensively is first base, but he is also pretty decent at second. One more year of Muncy is most likely going to happen. After that, who knows with a work stoppage highly possible before the 27 season. By the way, Max is a .217 career hitter against LHP, with an OPS of .783. Those are good numbers against lefties.

4-Gens
Reply to  Michael Norris

Thanks for taking the time to pull those numbers. Max has certainly been productive over his career with the Dodgers. My concern is what Max has become this season. He hit 19 HRs this season, and only 15 last season. Assuming his HRs per AB is consistent, that tells me he not reliable/healthy. And hen Roberts sits him against LH pitching, our LH power source is greatly diminished.

Good idea but I don’t think the owners would ever go for a reduced schedule. They’re going to have a hard time with negotiations anyway and I can’t see adding this to the mix this time around.

Lots of talk about a different 3rd baseman for 2026. Muncy’s having a hard time staying on the field.
Do you see any interest in Alex Bregman who is likely to opt-out of his final year with the Red Sox. He currently makes 40 million a year which isn’t crazy. He maybe seeking a big raise but who knows. I know he’s an es-Asstro but he’s not Altuve.
Do you think the Dodgers would have any interest in Bregman?

The Philadelphia Phillies entered the 2025 MLB playoffs as the favorites to win the World Series, followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners.

However, as the four Divisional Series prepare to begin on Saturday, the Dodgers have moved to +375, ahead of the Phillies, who fall to +475.

Going into this series the money favors the Dodgers. I find that interesting. The Dodgers record on the road is a very pedestrian 41-40 while the Phillies record at home is 55-26. The Phillies were better this year, but not by much. And they did better at the deadline than did the Dodgers.

Teo can be an enigma. He gives Phils a run, strikes out three times, and then rips their heart out with a 3 run HR.

As a positive note, I think the HPU has had a very nice game. The first base ump missed an obvious safe call in the 2nd inning.

Ohtani’s curve ball is unhittable. A good showing in his first playoff mound appearance.

A lot of these guys could get red hot and are due to be hot to counter how cold they were.if things really do even up there is a lot of even up to be done. Ohtani n Betts 0/9, Muncy zero, smith getting healthy, Freddie ok, but kike firing again. On any given night someone should be hot. Btw some questioned Smith batting where he did but I like it. He is going to need to be game adjusted. Bring him along slowly n keep him healthy. Glasnow had really good stuff if he could only throw strikes. Sasaki suddenly looking like a keeper.

Thank the LORD for most of our arms getting healthy right at the end. What a luxuary to be able to use Glasnow, Kershaw (later on), and Sasaki out of the bullpen.

It sure beats having to see Yates, Stewart, and Scott. I won’t put Treinen in that group because he has done so much for us wearing Dodgers Blue. The other 3 have done very little, and have given us too much agita.
