Last year, the Dodgers compiled a 14-9 spring record. The team with the best spring record? The Giants went 21-6. The Royals were the only other MLB team with 20 wins. The Brewers, who led all MLB teams in wins last year, finished 16-14 in the spring. In 24, LA was 14-7. Of course, they lost games because of traveling to Japan in 25 and Korea in 24. In 24, the best teams in spring were the Orioles with 23 wins and the Tigers, who won 20.

Mattingly
Since records for spring are usually not easily found, I found that on the Dodgers website, that I can look them up as far back as 2006. But I thought it best to just stick to the Guggenheim years. In 2013, the first really full season after the team was sold by McCourt, the Dodgers went 13-20 under Mattingly in the Cactus League. They scored 180 runs and gave up 207. The Cactus League champ that year was the Royals who won 25 and lost just 7. LA had the worst record of any NL West team. They won the West by 9 games over Arizona that year.

#13 Ramirez
2014, the Dodgers were dead last winning just 7 games and losing 12. They won the West by 6 games over the Giants. They hit .240 as a team in spring and hit 18 homers, but several teams hit more than 30. The teams ERA was 4.54. Hanley Ramirez led the team with 4 homers. In 2015, they went 16-11. Six games behind the Oakland A’s who won 22. In 15, they won the West by 8 games over the Giants. Those first 3 seasons, the Dodgers lost the LCS in 13, then lost twice in the division series in 14-15. In 15, Kike and Joc hit 6 homers in spring training to lead the team, Puig hit 5.

Segedin

2016 was another West title for LA. They won by 4 games over the Giants. The third straight year with SF finishing 2nd. In spring training, they once again had a losing record going 13-17. Their run differential was +3. Showing that it is not always the big power hitters who lead the team in spring homers, Austin Barnes and Rob Segedin led the team with 4 homers each. Justin Turner, Trayce Thompson and Scott Van Slyke hit 3 each.
The 2017 Dodgers would finally do something no Dodger team had done since 1988, make it to the World Series. They were 1 game over .500 that spring going 18-17. Joc Pederson slugged 6 homers to lead the team and struck out 20. Justin Turner had 5 homers and drove in 18, most on the team. He struck out just once in 55 at bats. Bobby Wilson, a catcher, hit 4 homers in spring. The 17 Dodgers won 104 games, the second most in Dodger history. They finished 11 games in front of Arizona. They would avenge their 16 loss in the LCS to the Cubs by returning the favor and beating them in six games. Kike hit 3 homers and drove in 7 runs in the game six win.

The Dodgers went 17-15 in spring training in 2018. As a team they hit 55 homers that spring. Grandal and Kemp, who had been traded back to LA that winter, led the team with 5 each. Bellinger, Kike and Puig each hit 4. The 2018 race was the closest race they had been in for the West since the team was sold. They actually had to play game 163 to beat the Rockies by a single game. They were overmatched in the World Series by the Red Sox, whose hero was a part time player, Steve Pearce.
In 2019, LA went 14-15 in the spring. Bellinger led the team with 4 homers, Turner, AJ Pollock, Pederson and Kike hit 3 each. LA went on to set a team record for wins with 106, beating the D-Backs by 21 games. They then got beat by the eventual World Champion Nats in the LDS. The Nats pitching made the difference. 2020 would be cut short by the Pandemic. Spring training was cut to just 20 games. The Dodgers went 13-7, best record in the Cactus League.
Over the winter, LA had traded for Mookie Betts. Betts had just 27 at bats during spring. Cody Thomas, who did not make the team, led all hitters in spring with 5 homers in just 22 at bats. Chris Taylor had 4 and led the team with 12 RBIs. LA went 43-17, beating the Padres by 6 games. They then swept the Brewers 2-0, swept the Padres, 3-0 with Will Smith setting a playoff record for most hits in a game with 5. They then battled the Braves in a 7-game series and won despite being down 3-1. They then won their first World Series since 1988 in six games over the Rays.
Corey Seager had an awesome spring in 21. He hit .346 and clubbed 8 homers driving in 16 runs. He would hit 16 during the regular season in what was his last year as a Dodger. Taylor hit 5 with Bellinger, Muncy and Smith hitting 3. For the first time since 2013, the Dodgers would not win the West. Despite winning 106 games again, they lost by 1 game to the Giants. LA was 13-11 in spring; the Giants were 11-12. LA beat the Giants in the LDS, 3-2 but lost the LCS in six games to the eventual champion Braves and Freddie Freeman. Chris Taylor became the second LA Dodger to hit 3 homers in a playoff game when he did it in game 5.
In 22, spring training was cut short by a labor dispute. LA wound up playing just 14 games. And by the way they played, one would never guess that they would win more games that season than they ever had. They were 5-9 in spring play. Eddy Alvarez and Edwin Rios led the team with 3 homers each. Freddie Freeman in his first spring with LA, hit .350 but had just 1 homer. LA won 111 games, finishing 22 games in front of San Diego. But all that good feeling went away when they lost 3 straight games to the Padres after winning game 1 of the LDS.
Six different players hit 3 homers in spring in 23 to tie for the team lead, Betts, Freeman, Outman, Muncy, Taylor and Luke Williams. The team went 14-13. They then went out and won 100 or more for the third year in a row and the fifth since 2017. They finished 100-62, 16 games better than Arizona. Then they were immediately knocked out of the playoffs when Arizona swept them. Arizona would eventually win the NL pennant but lose the World Series to Corey Seager’s Rangers.
As we have seen, in most of these seasons, the Dodgers have not cruised through spring training with a great record. They only led the Cactus league once in 2020. Spring records do not mean much except the individual stats which can help some youngster impress the front office brass. It might make the difference between going to AA or AAA. For the Dodgers at least, with so many superstars and solid position players, rookies do not quite get the chances they did years ago. Breaking camp with on the 26-man, is not an easy thing to do with this team.
Born June 14th, 1948, in Los Angeles California. AKA The Bear

Spring training for the Dodgers officially opens tomorrow. Some players, including Rortvedt, Kim and Ohtani are already in camp. Games begin next Saturday when the Dodgers play the Angels.
Big camp for Kim
He’ll be playing in WBC first…
He will be in camp until March. WBC opens on March 4th. He will have to travel to Japan to be with Team Korea which plays its round in Tokyo. He arrived at Camelback about 2 weeks ago and has been working out since.
For me Spring means winter has come to an end. Each year I very much look forward to that. If the Rams didn’t end the playoffs with a win, they didn’t, and the Lakers don’t look like a contender, they don’t, then I look forward to observing how the Dodgers are shaping up.
Wins in Spring Training mean very little to me. This year I’ll be looking at what prospects are showing value, mostly to anticipate who will be traded for what superstar. This is likely the last year they will be able to do that as difficult negotiations are expected after December 1st.
I don’t expect to see a whole lot of the starting lineup until late March. I’m not going to Glendale anymore so I will be focusing on what is being shown on local broadcast and what is being wriiten here and in The Times.
If I were to choose one player I am most interested in following it would be Kim. I love his speed and defense, and I can envision him on base front of Ohtani, Betts and Tucker.
Yes! In spite of the game transitioning to low avg, high slug players we still like guys like Kim, Edmons etc.
I would love to see one team go back to the old model of high avg/ obp, good defense, good pitching ,old style batting lineup and see how the did against the other teams.
Old school baseball? I would love it too, but this is a slug first organization.
I like both those guys.
On the position side, I think Betts is the most important returning player. We seemed about one bat short at times last year and he could be the one.
(Tucker could just put us way over the top.)
Best of luck on the surgery, Jeff. Break a leg!! (I mean, heal a leg)
Lakers are boring (but I watch). Kings are boring (but I watch). Football is over. The Dodgers cannot start soon enough!
I agree with Badger about Kim; we both will be rooting for him this spring and in the WBC.
I’m just glad the team doesn’t have to travel overseas to start the season this year.
No but spring once again will be interrupted by the WBC. I am not a fan of that tournament. Haven’t been since Hanley was injured and missed a huge chunk of the season.
Evan Phillips has been resigned for 1 year 6.5 million and dfa of Ben Rortvedt
Good move. Like a deadline deal for a late-inning RHP. No risk.
The Dodgers can trade Rortvedt or place him on waivers at any point within the next five days. Waivers are a 48-hour process, so his DFA will be resolved within a maximum of one week.
Trying to snead him thru waivers again is my guess.
Rortvedt has enough service time to reject an outright in favor of free agency but not enough to do so while retaining his guaranteed salary.
He is not attractive to many teams because of him not having any options left.
Once again I’m confused by moves the front office makes. Why didn’t they wait til could put Phillips on IL before signing. Must be a reason.
Interesting timing on both of those.
I guess they wanted to make sure Phillips didn’t sign somewhere else, although I don’t think he’s anywhere close to being ready to pitch on opening day.
Poor Rortvedt. He reported to ST early and now he can’t even participate while he sits around waiting to see what his fate will be. Maybe the dfa was done now before catchers start having injuries, in the hopes they can sneak him through waivers.
I thought they could sign Phillips and then put him on the IL>
So is Mookie! Hopefully a healthy Mookie and Muncy (M&M boys) produces big numbers this year.Cant wait. Just finished my sixth time through the WS and am ready for some new baseball
I can’t stop watching it either.
That 3-0 fastball by Snell to Vlad hit to dead center.
:[
I personally preferred Steven Nelson’s call ending the series over Joe Davis’ call.
I disagree. I thought Steven Nelson was too hesitant. “To beat the champs, you gotta knock them out”was classic by Joe. Also Joe’s instant call of “Game 7 tomorrow night” I thought both were excellent calls.
Me too
Agree.Must have watched it 30-40 times since then.
Still gives me goosebumps everytime.
And to think it gave the Dodgers their first back to back WS title in their long history makes it extra special. We are so blessed to live during these days of Dodgers baseball.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Corbin Carroll and Francisco Lindor will both probably miss the start of the season due to surgery for broken hamate bones.
You can add Jackson Holliday to the hamate list. It’s an epidemic!
It seems like those Hamate bone injuries linger for quite awhile after the player returns, those and Obliques.
My least favorite are the out-of-nowhere hamstring pulls that seem to be 1-2 months easy.
Hammy and quads.
Dodgers seem to be spinning dfa playerd in and out alot in the past couple of months. It looks weird but Im sure thete is a method to their mafness.
Couldn’t the signing of Phillips waited? During Spring Training can’t teams put players on the 60 day IL and open spots on the 40 man,or does that start the first day of the season? Whichever it is, couldn’t the signing of Phillips have waited until then thus keeping Rortveldt?
Or did they not want Rortveldt bad enough to be on the 40 man? Either way, they knew they would eventually sign Phillips but it looks like hey are making decisions day by day.
Happy spring training day everyone!
1. Opening day
2. Trade deadline
3. First day of postseason
4. First day of ST
5. Draft day
Orioles signed Chris Bassitt to a one-year deal. Phillies close to releasing or trading Nick Castellanos.
Nice articles by Ardaya on our spring training roster. Our pitching depth is insane! We could field two teams with pitching and both would be one of the best in baseball. Most excited I’ve ever been for a season. Have to enjoy 26, because there might not be a 27!
I am glad to see we didn’t sign a veteran starting pitcher [except for Irvin]. The team is stacked enough with the rotation we have and depth we’ve compiled. Biggest question to me is whether the extra starters have any shot at bullpen jobs or whether they’ll stay lengthened out at AAA.
Max Muncy has signed an extension and Kike Hernandez will be returning for 2026.
Kike is a death knell to any rookie expecting to make the roster.
He’ll go on the 60-day… Freeland might have a chance i there’s an injury.
Might, but doubtful. If Edman is ready by opening day, and he says that is what he is shooting for, the infielders will be Kim, Edman, Betts, Rojas, Freeman and Muncy. Call, Tucker, Pages, Hernandez the outfielders and Smith and Rushing the catchers with Ohtani the DH. That is 13 position players. Ohtani is carried as a DH.
Banda sent to the Twins for Intl. Bonus $.
This 40 man roster is rounding into form. It is almost a more important group than the 26 man.
Max being extended will probably frost Bum a little since he has been trying to trade him for years.
That was the very first thing that popped in my head when i heard about the extension, oh well it will give bum something to post about for a few more years
I blame it on the Shredder. He still has to do enough to hold off the kids who the Dodgers love to push up.
At least 26-27. Muncy also has an option for 28! Bum will go into cardiac arrest.
Bum should be able to come up with another 50 or 60 Muncy trade scenarios over the next couple of years🤪
Max has left maybe $30-40 million on the table by never opting for free agency.
Hometown discount for sure.
If you look through out the majors there are not many good third baseman, the position is pretty thin. Max when healthy is better than what many other teams are sending out day after day.
Told u they would sign kike.
Yeah, you did, but I don’t see the need. Just blocks one of the kids from getting a real shot, same for extending Muncy. If I was Freeland, I would ask for a trade.
I didn’t say I was in favor I just said they would. AF said kike could come back if he wanted. He took a pay cut I believe so he did it because he wanted to. If he still has the magic touch in the playoffs it will be worth it. I doubt he had many options because he is a below average major leaguer. The team and fans love him apparently.
I like Freeland but doubt he will ever be more than average. He had opportunity last year and probably will again this year. He just needs to perform.
His magic touch in the World Series was limited to one play in the outfield. He struck out 15 times in the seven games. Maybe his surgery fixed whatever was wrong with him. Yes, he is very popular with the fans but a redundant piece with Edman, Kim and Rojas all able to play multiple positions. You can even put Mookie in that box since he can play second, short, right and center.
Banda traded to the Twins for International pool money.
Good day for LA
Dodgers signed Keston Hiura to a minor league contract per MLBTR.
Oh man, I thought when he first came up he was going to be a star.
Very high K rate, over 30%. Dude has some pop. Limits Ward’s options if he gets sent back to OKC.
Assistant to the assistant 1B
Re Spring… I’ve got to say it’s a bit boring right now, with practically every position set.
I’d like to see some legitimate position battles. The only question may be whether Kim gets a full opportunity at 2B, which should happen if Edman isn’t ready.
Next year will be the same!
Threepeat, run it back, then anything goes
The downside of dominance.
Max is sooo underpaid by MLB standards.
I looked up the stats and salaries for three rough comps: Eugenio Suarez, Josh Naylor and Anthony Rizzo. (Remember, Max was good at 1B before he became not-so-good at 3B. Years ago, commentators like Billy Ripken were insisting that he should be trade to an AL team so he could DH.)
Actually, Max’s career OPS and OBP is better than those three–and they all have been paid millions more per year.
Max is grateful for how the Dodgers revived his career. But if he had opted for free agency, he might have made $30-40 million more over the years.
The Angels are in agreement to bring back veteran utility player Chris Taylor, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. It’s not clear whether it’s an MLB deal or a minor league contract with a Spring Training invite, though the latter seems more likely.
Taylor signed a minor league deal with a spring training invite, per Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. He reported to camp this morning.
I love Taylor but the Angels are an embarrassment.
Blame that on their owner. Moreno is not too bright in some of his decisions. He could have had Andy Pages. Starting lineup projected to be O’Hoppe C, Schanuel 1B, Moore 2b, Moncada 3B, Neto SS, Adell LF, Teodosio CF, Trout RF, Soler DH/ Lot of kids in that lineup.
Jays traded Joey Loperfido to the Astros for Jesus Sanchez. Elroy Face, who was 18-1 with 10 saves in 1959 and did not win the Cy Young, passed away at 97 years old. RIP
97, that’s a win
Yep. That is quite a life.
Hearing Rortvedt cleared waivers and been assigned to OKC. Alls well that ends well they say.
Rortvedt cannot be put on waivers until Monday the 16th. He was just DFAd on the 11th. It is at least a five-day process and he is not on the OKC roster.
Yeah I was misinformed and didn’t investigate. My bad
No biggie, it is just about knowing how long the process is.
From Fantacy Sports
Mock Trade DetailsDodgers Get:
Paul Skenes
Pirates Get:
Tyler Glasnow
River Ryan
Josue De Paula (OF, No. 1 Prospect)
Zyhir Hope (OF, No. 2 Prospect)
Jackson Ferris (SP, No. 6 Prospect)
Emil Morales (SS, No. 7 Prospect)
Not a chance.
Glasnow a throw-in lol
Ridiculous!
Skenes is good, but not worth six players. Skubal would not even command that kind of package.
I say thanks, but NOOOOO thanx. Insane haul even as good as Skenes is.
Glasnow, Stone, dePaula or Hope,Freeland, Copen or Ferris would be a trade I consider.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about Skubal?
Dodgers don’t need him, but I’d prefer to see a trade than just another big fat check to “win the winter.”
The Tigers could be facing a big fat dilemma at midseason.
Tigers still believe they can win their division, if they trade Skubal, it won’t be until the deadline when they can get a big haul for him from a contender.
Good news is that our elevator is finally fixed. Bad news is that ESPN is taking over MLB.TV. Why doesn’t MLB just leave well enough alone? It was working fine as it was. NBC taking over games this year too.
So what negatives will arise from espn taking over ? The reason I ask was going to switch this year from extra innings to mlb.tv
First for me is not knowing whether or not I will get my discount for being a veteran. I get the one team package, which for veterans is about 99 dollars a year. Much better than paying 150. Some think you have to subscribe to ESPN plus which is 29 a month. But that is optional I believe. I would still get to see the games on Sports Net LA. But the cost seems to be much higher than before and games played against the Rockies because I live in Colorado are still blacked out and I have to watch those on the Rockies Spectrum station which means I have to listen to their announcers, and that in and of itself is painful. I always turn the sound off.
Could be worse Bear. I live 9 hours from Dallas and 5 hours from Houston and games for both teams are blacked out here. Plus my tv provider doesn’t carry their official channels so I’m out of luck for 6 games a year. Plus however many on Apple TV. So I’m only mostly spoiled lol
Believe me, having to listen to Drew Goodman drone on during a Rockies game 13 times is much worse.
The process is somewhat convoluted. If you go to the MLB.TV site and say you want to sign up, you’re redirected to theESPN site. From there, I had to create a MyDisney account (I have YouTube TV Sout might be different if you use cable). Once it was created, the signup was straight forward. You can also connect the account to your MLB TV account, so you can use either app to watch the games. Two major points :
My subscription is with MLB.TV. I always cancel after the season because I do not want the subscription to automatically renew. So, my account in good until February 28th. I then go online on the 1st of March and sign up again. I do this for a couple of reasons, one is because that is when they ask if I am a veteran, two is because I am getting older and I might be dead when the renewal is supposed to occur. LOL.
Okay, I am back from surgery and off pain meds for 48 hours so my wife is letting me back on to my computer. Surgery went well and my knee already feels better than before surgery. I have started my exercises and my range of motion is a lot better than anticipated. I am already at my office in Starbucks.
But enough of that. The Dodgers and MLB made some significant changes while I was out, and while I am sure you all covered them, I am going to give my spin on it. I am working on that now. Bear has a post I believe is close to publishing, and then we should be back on schedule.
Glad to hear
Good to hear you’re recovering well.
It should be ready by Monday Jeff. Glad all went well.
Some more signings in MLB. Padres signed Nick Castellanos and Griffin Canning. Arizona signed Joe Ross and Jose Mercado to minor league deals. Padres need to make a roster move to accommodate Griffin. Twins signed Andrew Chafin to a minor league deal Arizona brought back Paul Sewald. Jays signed Jesse Hahn to a minor league deal. Royals signed LHP John Means to a minor league contract.
Muncy’s extension includes escalators based on plate appearances. He can earn up to 2.25 million more. Dodgers handed out Valentines Day baseballs to fans as they came out of the clubhouse this morning.
Padres signed German Marquez to a one-year deal.
Bear, you and Kickstart were having a conversation above about Rortvedt being put on waivers.
You said they needed to wait 5 days before doing that. I could be very wrong here, but I believe they could actually put him on waivers immediately, it’s just that they have the option of waiting 5 days to see if they can find a trade and then waivers is a 48 hour process, for a total of 7 days maximum.
Obviously, in most cases a team would prefer to find a trade rather than give up a player for nothing.
Maybe Jeff or someone else can set me straight here if I’m wrong in my assumptions. Or you can feel free to correct me Bear if you’re positive I’m wrong.
If they would have put him on waivers immediately, it would have to be release waivers. Different process. DFA allows them seven days to decide his fate. The five-day period is over on Monday.
Yu Darvish will miss the entire 26 season and he is contemplating retirement. Padres top three starters will be Pivetta, King and Musgrove. Marquez and Canning candidates for the rotation.
100th comment
100 wins this season.
Get through the early rounds and we’re untouchable in 7.
Weird thing is biggest game of postseason is the first.
I think they will win the division and get the first-round bye. All of that of course depends on team health. Although they have managed to dodge the bullet the last couple of years, remember that injuries derailed the 21-22 and 23 seasons.
