Friday Game Summary

In the first game of this must win series, the Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Freddie Freeman’s 18th homer of the year. He drove in Shohei Ohtani, who had doubled on the first pitch of the game. Kershaw was not sharp in the bottom of the inning. He gave up a double to Perdomo, Grichuk grounded out with Perdomo taking third. Gurriel walked and Bell singled in Perdomo. McCarthy was hit by a pitch. Suarez then hit a shallow fly ball to left that Teo caught, the runner tagged and scored, but Muncy threw to second and Bell was doubled up.

In the top of the second, Muncy, Edman and Rojas singled with Muncy scoring on Rojas’s single. Ohtani was hit by a pitch. Betts hit a sac fly scoring Edman. Ohtani then stole second, his 43rd, putting runners on first and third. Freeman hit a ground ball to the first baseman and Rojas scored the third run. 5-3 Dodgers.

In the bottom of the second inning, Carroll led off. On the second pitch from Kershaw, Carroll pulled a long homer down the right field line. Roberts immediately came out of the dugout and Kershaw was pulled from the game. It was later reported that he left because of a sore big toe. Joe Kelly replaced Kershaw.

Newman singled. Herrea was called out on strikes. Perdomo flied out to center and Pederson was hit by a pitch. Gurriel then lined out to centerfield. The Dodgers got 2 men on with walks in the top of the third, but did not score. Joe Kelly went back out to pitch the third inning. Since the Dodgers do not have a long man on the roster, this was a necessary move. Bell singled and McCarthy was hit by a pitch. Suarez grounded into a double play. Carroll then walked. At this point, I really thought Roberts was going to pull Kelly. Vesia was warming up in the pen. Kelly got called for a balk when he made a third disengagement trying to pick off Carroll. Bell scored and Carroll went to second. You could tell Kelly was totally gassed. Newman walked bringing up the left-handed hitting Herrera. Here is where I think Roberts blew it, Vesia was ready and a lefty coming up, he left Kelly in to pitch to Herrera who hit a sharp single to right scoring the tying run.

Gallen breezed through the 4th and 5th innings. Vesia had a clean 4th. Brasier gave up nothing but a bunt single in the 5th. In the top of the 6th, Floro came in to pitch for Arizona. Muncy doubled. Edman popped out and Rojas grounded out with Muncy going to third. With Ohtani coming up, Joe Mantiply came in for Arizona. Mantiply got 2 strikes on Ohtani and then threw one in the dirt that got away for a wild pitch and Muncy scored the go-ahead run. Ohtani struck out.

Kopech came in to pitch. Newman singled and Herrara was out on a bunt pop up to Kopech. Perdomo walked and Pederson struck out. Gurriel then lined out to left. In the top of the 7th, Betts walked and then stole second. Freeman grounded out to Perdomo. Teo was walked intentionally. Sewald replaced Mantiply and Kike hit for Lux. Kike flued out and Betts took third. Teo stole second. Will Smith then hit a long fly ball into the left field seats for a 3-run homer, his 17th. Muncy struck out.

Hudson pitched the bottom of the 7th. Hudson got three clean outs. In the top of the 8th, Edman flied out and Rojas grounded out. Ohtani then hit his 43rd homer into the left field seats. Betts flied out to center field. 10-5 Dodgers. Treinen allowed a double to Carroll in the bottom of the 8th.He got the next three hitters without allowing a run. Freeman grounded out off of Ginkel to start the 9th. Teo doubled. Kike popped out to the second baseman. Smith then flied out deep to right field.

Banda came out to pitch the 9th. Pederson led off with a single to left field. Gurriel struck out. Bell then singled and Pederson went to second. A wild pitch on the first pitch to McCarthy moved Pederson and Bell up to second and third. McCarthy singled in Pederson and Bell. Suarez homered to left and now it is 10-9. Carroll popped out to Muncy for the second out. Guilleorme flied out to Teo to end the game. Dodgers now 5 games ahead of both SD and Arizona. Brasier got the win. Stone pitches tomorrow against Kelly.

Teo made two sliding catches in left field. Dodger pitching was helped by 3 double plays.  They scored 10 runs despite the fact that they were 3-15 with RISP. They left 5 runners on base. Betts, Teo and Ohtani stole bases. The bullpen after Kelly did a great job until Banda ran out of gas in the 9th and allowed 4 runs. But he buckled down and got the last two outs. Now attention will turn to Kershaw and how bad is the toe injury.

                                                                                            Minor League Scores.

Rancho beat San Jose 6-4 in San Jose. Hope and Rojas had 2 hits apiece. Only 3 of the 6 runs were earned. Zazueta went 5 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 run, he struck out 7. Linan went 2.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 5. Shaw went 1.2 innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. He got his first win.

Great Lakes lost in 10 innings, 4-1. The winning runs scored on a grand slam homer with 2 outs. Ramirez took the loss. Great Lakes managed only 3 hits.

Tulsa lost 2-1 to Corpus Christi. Santana had 2 hits and drove in the only run. Keith also had 2 hits. Karros started and went 3 scoreless innings allowing 1 hit, 1 walk and striking out 3. Campos went 4 innings and got the loss allowing 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 7. Morillo finished up and struck out 1.

OKC beat Round Rock, 4-3. Pages had 2 hits and drove in a run. Cartaya drove in a run also. Rushing was 0-4 with a walk and 3 Ks. Duplantier went 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 9 and got the win. Grove went an inning and struck out 2. Nick Ramirez pitched 1/3rd of an inning allowing a run on 2 hits and a walk. Little went 2/3rds of an inning giving up only a walk. Henriquez and Petersen went an inning each. Both struck out two in their clean innings. Peterson got his 10th save and dropped his ERA to 1.64.

A reminder that the Dodgers can add two players to the roster on Sunday. Rushing will most likely not be added. I see Pages and a pitcher, Grove or Knack, being added to the roster. Players who are not on the 40-man, but who have been in the organization the entire year, can be added if they are replacing a player on the 60-day IL. The team has to petition the commissioner’s office to make this move. The players being replaced must have been on the IL for the minimum time required. These rules can be found at https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/postseason-roster-rules-eligibility

Duke Not Snider

Teoscar should have made those FA rankings.
As for today’s game, it wasn’t pretty but it’s a W. Not sure what to make of Kershaw’s toe troubles, but the Dodgers muddled through. Joe Kelly reminded us why he shouldn’t make the postseason roster. I think Banda’s rough inning was bound to happen, given his workload.
Great to see Smith come through with that HR. And who knew that Shohei’s HR would wind up providing the winning margin? The insurance run was needed.
I’m expecting Pages and Knack to be called up. Today’s game illustrated why an innings-eater like Knack is needed.

dodgerram

Knack has pitched on Wedneday so would be not available before Sunday or Monday at the earliest.

I want the Dodgers to make a play on Soto. Dodgers need more youth and this guy is on a HOF pace at age 26. Yes, he will cost some money but if we let Teo walk there is some money spared. plus Freemans contracat does not run that long too freeing up more money down the road. Same with the albatross contract of CT3.

Soto might just be the best and most complete hitter in the game today.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keith

Heck duke the more the rest of the league disrespects Teoscar the better chance we have of getting him back

dodgerram

Kershaw to the IL is an absolute MUST in this situation. Dodgers need fresh arms to survive at this moment. I already heard CK is lobbying to stay up because it is “only” a pain tolerance thing. Yeah, what if he stays up, takes his next turn in the rotation and has to leave again in the first or second inning ?

I get it that it is Kershaw we are talking here but you can not run this bullpen completely in the ground . Can not do it.

My approach: Put Clayton on the IL, call up Wrobleski to piggy peg with Stone today if needed.
Put Banda and Kelly on the IL too. Banda needs rest , he has pitched way too much in the past week.
Kelly is unreliable to begin with and can not be used in the next 3 days anyway having thrown over 40 pitches yesterday.
Bring up Honeywell and Casparius for them.
When rosters expand on Sunday bring up Grove or Peterson.

Start Flaherty on Sunday and Buehler on Monday on regular 4 day rest.
For the first Angels game call up Knack to make the start .

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dodgerram

Yes, Flaherty is scheduled for Monday but the Dodgers could easily switch him to Sunday on 4 day rest (which always was the regular rest anyway).

Dodgers currently have only 39 men on the 40 roster according to several sources. Why not piggyback
WRoblleski with Stone ? I see no reason why that can not be done.

If Stone gives you 7 or 8 IP today that much better..

Go Dodgers””””””””””””””

Jeff

How bout that last inning! We threw everything we had at them and they still kept coming. My respect to AZ. That is a very dangerous club who has so many batters waiting to hurt you. They let Gallen pitch way too long, but why not? This was a very important game for us to win. Everyone is contributing and the bottom of our lineup became as important as our top. Shohei!!

dodgerram

What a game!Definition of a nailbiter!
With Kershaws early exit the bullpen got really taxed in the first game of this 4 game set. Not good for the rest of the series. Hope this will not be kind ofa Pyrrhos victory.

I dont think they can now go with Wrobleski on Sunday. They probably need him as a long relief innings eater now. Good thing they can call up an additional pitcher on Sunday. Badly needed.
As for CK: The stuff simply is no longer there. Even without the toe injury I do not see him as an option as a playoff starter.
Kelly too erratic to be relied on out of the pen.

What was that with giving Kopech the 6th inning crap ? Do not understand it one bit.
Kopech has been used a lot vs the Orioles and I would not have brought him other than for a save. It worked out in the end but it is decisions like that why I do not think too much of Roberts.

Need a good game from Stone today!

Go Dodgerd!!!!!!!

Dave

There is a need for a starter on Sunday. Wrobleski? Knack?

dodgerram

I would go with Flahertiy on his normal rest on Sunday and Buehler Monday.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave

This season the Dodgers have only had a pitcher go on the fifth day 3 times. They could do it but it’s not “normal”. Maybe at this point they need to get them used to pitching more often so they can do it in the playoffs, but my guess is Wrobly.

dodgerram

Dave, I did not recognize that it happened only 3 times this season. Amazing stat. That is all but a 6th men rotation.
Still I would do it this time.
Team needs innings from the starters desperately at this time of the season.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Badger

Gotta score…. 10?

What a valiant offensive effort in a bullpen game on the road against a very good division rival.

I have an eeire feeling it’s going to be like this a lot going forward. This pitching staff is worn thin.

“We’re hopeful”. Dave Roberts on whether Glasnow will pitch again this year. Hopeful? Yamamoto “could” be back but it won’t be any time soon. He’s got a few rehab assignments left to do. So who’s going to step in now?

tedraymond

I stopped watching after Smith’s HR. What could possibly go wrong? After Kelly provided one of his pathetic shit show outings and was out of the way, I figured it was clear sailing. I was wrong. I almost spit out my coffee this morning when I went to the Dodger website and saw the score. Yikes.

Nice to see Will Smith have a big HR. Ohtani continues to amaze. I can see him getting the 50 stolen bases, but to hit seven HR’s in the next 27 games is going to be tough. It’s an exciting addition to the tight division battle we’ll be watching.

The starting pitching continues to be ever evolving. CK is healthy for a few starts and then breaks down. The BP gets healthy and somewhat rested and all that goes down the toilet with Kershaw’s early exit and a Joseph Kelly experience. Get Knack and Wrobleski up here ASAP. They may lack experience, but at least the odds are they can go 4-6 innings and stay healthy for the rest of the season.

Being that Roberts is not very optimistic about Glasnow and/or Yamamoto returning this year we can pretty much rule them out for the postseason. What a shame. A half a billion dollars just doesn’t buy what it used to. The two started 36 games and a mere 208 innings. Sandy Koufax would spit on those two stats for a season. But, I digress.

If last night’s game is any indicator this series is going to be fun to watch. No more early exits for me.

Carry on

philjones

Hey Ted. Just a minor name correction. Joseph is the effective, nasty, pitcher who can occasionally make an appearance. Last night, we saw the ineffective Joe, who’s horseshit. You just never know. What I do know is a starter will likely be available in the bullpen, for the playoffs and we should send Kelly’s ass down the road.

True, Kelly had to work a second inning but he has been maddingly inconsistent all year long. He is the classive Two-Face pitcher.
Never know what you get.Dangerous in the postseason.

Noted. Thanks for the heads up. I’m at the age where I can’t afford to have to remember such things. My memory has become a team sport. Me, friends, the Google machine, and contributors to Dodger Chronicles.

Bobby

The bullpen is saving our butts right now. We can’t keep having the bullpen pitch more innings than the starters!

We need 2 guys to come up today, but we also need Stone to give us minimum 6, hopefully 7. Won’t be easy, but show the world what you got!

Badger

He already has Bobby. In fact he’s the only one who has. He leads the team in starts, innings pitched and wins. And he’s still a rookie. On this Super Team the organization has put together the most reliable pitcher on it has been a rookie. Not sure what that says about management but I know what it says about Gavin Stone. Can he keep it up? Can the organization keep asking him to lead? Guess we’ll find out.

I wish we had Pepiot. I had hopes for the Stone, Pepiot, Sheehan trio.

I still pull for Joc

We need another Pepiot.

I don’t.

Badger

100 innings.

TennisMenace (TM)

I agree with many here- give Kershaw and Kelly some time off…bring up fresh arms. Too bad we still didn’t have Yarborough….he was an innings eater.

dodgerram

Banda needs a break badly. Roberts is running him right into the ground. Has pitched 3 days in a row now as reported.
And then to read somewhere where he is put in the same boat as Kelly when it comes to critising the work of a player. Only true morons would make that comparision.
We need Banda in the postseason. One of the best relievers we have had this year.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems like just about every pitcher on the staff needs a break. And a few position players, too.
But to me, those days are over, effective now. Unless we open up a more comfortable division lead, I want to see a set line up and pitchers suck it up and get outs. Everybody is tired and everybody is dinged up.
its time to compete and perform. You have all winter to rest.

TennisMenace (TM)

Wow Phil…I feel for anyone who has you for a boss…

philjones

TM, I have more empathy for players then anyone here. But it’s a performance business, it’s a fight down the stretch, and this isn’t rec league.
Youre right, if you aren’t ready and anxious to compete in important games without wanting a break, you would not play for me.
Most professional players would agree with me.

philjones

And I’d like to see WTF Doc is doing again with his bullpen moves.

Bobby

Yes, because telling Banda to suck it up and go 4 straight games will ensure he pitches successfully.

philjones

That’s on Doc. A Manager needs to put players in a situation to be successful.
It’s up to players to perform when asked.
Did you miss when I asked WTF Doc is doing with the pen?

tedraymond

TM, you can’t be serious. Both have most of the year on the IL until recently.

Kershaw has pitched 30 innings and Kelly 28. I think the only fresh arms are on teams below AAA. Roberts is like the boy trying to stop holes in a dike. The whole staff needs a break. One pitcher comes back and the next game another goes on the IL or can’t pitch because of a minor injury. If the staff is healthy all year then the division would have been locked up by now. But, the injuries do not stop.

And, with all that, the shocking thing is that the Dodgers have won more games than any other team in MLB. WTF. How does that happen? This is with two of the hottest teams in baseball in our division.

It’s hard to explain all the complaining from many of us here. I’m as guilty as anyone. We are focused on the Dodgers. We watch an extremely talented group of players night after night. We comment and criticize after each game. But, if/when we take a step back and look at all of baseball and see how the Dodgers measure up it looks damn good. Even at that, we all want better play from each player and the team as a whole. We want the Dodgers to be better than the best.

I think the Dodgers have control of the division right now. Eventually, the Padres and Snakes are going to fold. They can’t keep up winning at the rate they have in the past few weeks…..I hope. Again, the main issue for playoff success is getting somehow, some way, to get and keep the starters healthy. That will help get the BP ready and rested for the playoffs.

Cassidy

Wow! If there was a stat that measured runs as a function of talent right now, then the DBacks would be setting an all time mlb record! This is a team full of belief and confidence right now. Stone has his work cut out for him. He’s gonna be throwing 100 pitches no matter what.

Dionysus

I hope we meet them again this postseason.

dodgerram

be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.
D-Backs are a very good team and will be even better when Marte and Walker return.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make Mine Blue

marte is a Dodger-killer

Claude Osteen

I’ll bet Kershaw had a toe injury last year when he got blasted by the d-backs as well!

Make Mine Blue

I feel reasonably confident that if the Dodgers can score 10 runs per game they have at least a 50/50 chance of getting a win in those games, geez! LOL

Badger

Yeah, 8 might not be enough.

Scott Andes

That’s because the pitching is pathetic

Scott Andes

I see you are already loading up the excuse cannon for poor management and baseball philosophies by management.

But you are wrong, they are not 3rd in pitching, they rank 8th overall. I just checked this yesterday. The starters rank 14th, although bullpen is now fifth overall. The relievers have pitched well overall despite being run into the ground on purpose due to not having anyone in the entire organization that can pitch 7 innings of a baseball game.

And look they’ve already given up 9 runs by the 4th inning today again. They are now giving up 8-10 runs per game and will continue to do so for the rest of the season. The pitching staff is torched. Who’s fault do you think that is?

Bluto

I’ve said before that I think the Dodgers could do better at manager than what they have with Roberts.

But on days like today? Or in seasons like this one?

How many better managers are there? Maybe one? Maybe?

Sometimes it’s hard to know how good the Dodgers have it and are.

philjones

I agree Bear. Despite his occasional questionable decision with bullpen usage and lineups, leading the league in wins with all of the injuries will put Doc in the conversation for Manager of the Year.

Bluto

Per Plunkett:

Ben Casparius, Brent Honeywell Jr and Justin Wrobleski are all in #Dodgers clubhouse today. Roster moves to come.

Also, Graterol will probably start rehab next week, then activation…

Last edited 1 month ago by Bluto
Michael Norris

Honeywell is not on the 40-man, some sort of move would have to be made to that for him to be activated. Someone most likely would have to go on the IL. Wrobleski is going to pitch tomorrow’s day game. Yamamoto makes another re-hab start at OKC on Tuesday.

Ron Fairly fan

A 40 man roster spot is open since Heyward was a DFA. Honeywell can take that spot until it’s needed for Yamamoto

Michael Norris

Yuli Gurriel will be acquired by the Royals today from the Braves. Gurriel was a member of the 17 Trashtos. Glasnow threw earlier today and said his elbow feels much better. Kiermaier in tonight’s lineup batting 9th. Edman is sitting, Rojas is playing SS. No roster moves yet.

Michael Norris

Former Brave LHRP, Tyler Matzek released by the Giants. Second relief pitcher cut loose by SF in the last two days.

Singing the Blue

CK told Doc he’d be lonely on the IL, so Doc sent Kelly there to keep him company. Officially, shoulder inflammation.

Honeywell and Casparius added.

No Kelly, No problem.

When the Dodgers got Ohtani I kind of envisioned the dodgers having a few games like the first inning. That was sooo much fun to watch. Now back to reality. The dbacks take the lead 4-3. Stone auditioning for a playoff spot. He is not impressing anybody on the Dodger side. We are so hurting for starting pitching. Looks like a replay of last year. We need to not only get Glasnow n Yamamoto back but they need to be on their game.
playoff pitchers if healthy:

Glasnow
Flaherty
yamamoto

looking for a fourth
btw Badger going to take 10plus for the win!

Bobby

The positive is he’s only at 50 pitches, so he can still give us 3 more innings today and save the bullpen

Therealten

We do have Honeywell and Casparius
? to help us get through the game. Would still like to win here to at least halve the series.

not a criticism but just an observation. Just a shame Ohtani and Betts struggle to deliver the knockout punch with the bases loaded etc. smith really delivered a knockout blow last night with a 3 run homer. Ohtani up with the bases loaded nobody out. He delivered one run but then Betts leaves a runner at third less than 2. They could have knocked Kelly out but now he will probably go 7. Freddie did deliver btw

That’s what happens with speed. Sometimes you get overly aggressive and you make an out.

I just realized, and I might be wrong that when Pages gets called up it will be 14 position players and they can keep all 14 position players as options in the playoffs. They would just need to keep one out of one series and then maybe use the other one in another series depending on matchups.

Lets hope all of this Glasnow and Yamamoto stuff on the IL was planned to keep them fresh for the playoffs.

Eric

Oh yeah, a few comments above I want to touch on.

last year, the manager of the year in both leagues were the ones who were managing the teams with the best records in one run games. I think that’s how it should be just my opinion.

I hate to say it, but a position player’s career stats against a certain team doesn’t mean anything because there are different pitchers on that particular team throughout that guys career.

Somebody brought up a six man rotation and that’s what I thought the Dodgers should’ve done this year, considering the disaster starting pitching was last year because of injuries.

Looks like we’re going to see a platoon at 3B in the playoffs between Muncy and Kike.

Nice first inning by Casparius. Offense has a lot of hits, but also some bad at bats with runners on. Kike too aggressive and the same with Teo. He could not have hit that last pitch with an oar.

Therealten

Slider, slider, slider, don’t have to throw it for a strike either.

casparis come in and did the job!

Ron Fairly fan

I like what I saw with young Ben. He was not afraid to throw strikes. So many times youngsters come up and try to nibble on the corners. Not this kid he went right after the batters.

Cassidy

Horrible top of the 8th!

Bluto

Better top of the 9th!

Cassidy

It sure was! Great win

Bisonjones

Wow — what a great win! That was fun!!

Agree!!!

First win for Casparius some small ball for the old school fans and a 6 game lead. That trade for Kopech and Edman is looking better and better.

Well, Rojas and Edman starting, although Edman didn’t start today has helped instead of all those misfits that were starting right before the trade deadline and right after the trade deadline before Rojas came back and then Muncy and Betts came back.

Bisonjones

The AB by Will Smith to start the 9th was outstanding. That’s the Will Smith I remember!!
