“High fly ball into right field, she is gone!
“In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.

Bluto

Don’t understand bringing in Cortes for a high leverage spot.

dont really care.

Bluto

Oh. And Joe Davis’ call was pretty great

Cassidy

So Freddie is the selfish one who wont sit when he’s hurt?

Bluto

What? Am I missing something?

OhioDodger

Nothing.

Cassidy

Don’t understand how you can walk Lux!

Bluto

Yes, this is my point.

Cortes a starter, hasn’t pitched in a moon….

Again, who cares? But is a curiousity.

dodgerram

He did a great job on Shohei. Who knows what Hill would have done vs Shohei ?

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff Dominique

The reason Cortes is on the roster is for him to face Ohtani. Yeah he got Ohtani, but it was his ball that took Verdugo into the stands thus moving up Lux and Edman to 3rd and 2nd. That allowed them to walk Mookie to get lefty Freeman up against lefty Cortes. Cortes had to pitch to Freeman as he was his 3rd batter. He got Shohei on a high fastball, and tried to do the same with Freddie. It was just too low, and in Freddie’s wheelhouse.

Badger

I missed something and I didn’t hear either announcer address it. Did the umpires call Catch and Carry dead ball runners advance? That would be the reason to walk Mookie – open first base.

RATA

ESPN “play by play” indicates that Taylor and Edmond did advance on the foul fly ball out,

Ron Fairly fan

According to the talking heads at the MLB Network by rule the runners advance when the player making the catch leaves the field of play.

Duke Not Snider

It was likened to a ball entering the dugout. If the ball leaves the field of play, the runners advance.

RATA

PS – I believe its rule Rule 5.09(a)(1)

Badger

It is RATA.

And I reviewed the video. They did say it, though it went by quickly. Huge play.

Phil Jones

RATA – Really?
I didn’t happen to hear that tid-bit from Joe and John. Smoltz’ was too busy talking about what the next pitch should be.

Bumsrap

Lol

Phil Jones

I was wondering the ground rules too? With the short walls there have to be “ground rules” covering that situation. Can you actually go into the stands, make that catch and throw a ball back in play, from the stands?
That’s have to have happened many times.

Badger

It’s a little more involved than that Bear:

Catch and carryIn 2016 MLB revised Rule 5.06(b)(3)(C) (including the Comment) to remove the opportunity for a player to “catch-and-carry” the ball into dead-ball territory. The rule formerly allowed a player who made a catch on the run in fair territory, but whose momentum then carried him into dead-ball territory, to have a legal catch and then throw the ball back into play, so long as the player did not fall in dead-ball territory. This is no longer the case. The rule now states that any player who “after having made a legal catch, should step or fall into any out-of-play area, the ball is dead ….” There is a one-base award for all runners on base, although the batter is out on the catch (if made while the fielder is still in fair territory).

So long as the fielder has a legal catch before stepping or falling into dead-ball territory, the catch is good and the out stands. If, on the other hand, one or both feet are out-of-play when the the ball is secured, this is not a catch (just a foul ball). It would also not be a catch if both feet are off the ground while leaning over a fence or other barrier while reaching into out-of-play territory while attempting the catch.

Badger quotes the rule, “It would also not be a catch if both feet are off the ground while leaning over a fence or other barrier while reaching into out-of-play territory while attempting the catch”.

My question is, wouldn’t’ this apply to an outfielder who leaps above the fence (both feet off the ground) to catch a ball that’s over the fence and in the “out-of-play area” (the stands)?

Don’t we see this when the outfielder leaps up and has his glove above and behind the plain of the fence? He catches the ball and brings it back into the field of play. I have never seen this rule applied in a game. Confusing to me. But, now days that’s not unusual.

Badger

You’re right.

“It would also not be a catch if both feet are off the ground while leaning over a fence or other barrier while reaching into out-of-play territory while attempting the catch.”

That was part of the explanation (cut and paste) but is in my opinion not true. Good catch Ted.

Bumsrap

Otherwise, runners could tag up and take more than one base, no?

Badger

Yep

A big shout-out to Treinen. Though the Yanks ran on him and filled the bases, he never panicked, kept his composure, and got out of the 10th somehow leaving his team down only 1 run. The guy is unflappable ..and deserved that win.

Good call.

Some how, Wayne?

Treinen’s somehow is a breaking ball from HELL.

My “somehow” referred to Treinen’s composure overcoming the momentum of events seemingly turning against him that inning.

Good Call

tedraymond

Isn’t that the truth! I was going to be happy with a game winning single.

Having his Dad sitting in the first row behind home plate just added to the moment.

Phil Jones

Ho Hum, just another October baseball game………..

WOW, what a game! A Classic in game 1.

All that was missing was a call by Vin on Freddie’s slam. And the Spanish broadcast with Fernando.

It was sound strategy by Boone but Freddie had to be psyched for the opportunity after they choose to walk Mookie and go to Nestor Cortez. News Flash to Nestor; do not throw a pitch in the “loop-zone” to Freddie in that situation. Stanton hit one out in that zone out, to him, off Flaherty. If you are going to pitch there, you better get in.

We didn’t miss on our scouting report on the Umpiring Crew. They got off to a bad start with Carlos Torres, the HPU, Game 1.
My scouting report “Game 1: Carlos Torres (ranked 32nd of 90, 1st WS)
(my book) Carlos Torres – shitty. inconsistent. Refuses to call strikes south and sometimes north. May expand 1 & 5 zones. (that’s in the rivers, which is the area between the black and the batter’s box line. 1 zone is off the plate away to RHB, 5 zone is off plate inside to RHB)”. He lived up to being shitty.

I thought we had pissed it away a couple of times. Will Smith had a terrible at bat with the bases loaded unexplainable popped up the first pitch he saw, an inside hand-job, instead of taking that pitch. It was 6” inside.
And when Lux fell down rounding second on the grounder that get under the second sacker’s glove and rolled to the outfield. I think Lux had third base made and HAD TO go with 1 out. Maybe a quick corralling of the ball in center and a great throw, would have been close. But I’m going 1 run down.
And Lux fell down……………..he just tripped over his feet. I’m happy he didn’t blow up another knee, but he wasn’t held up and returning to the bag. He fell down.
But Ohtani’s up. Damned he doesn’t pop up the first pitch.
Duggie made a fabulous catch in the foul ball into the bleachers.
Had Lux been on 2nd, Duggie wouldn’t have caught pop up. If he had, Edman (or CT3)
walk home to tie the game.
How about Kike’s sac bunt with Rizzo up his ass? That defensive idea, right down Kike’s throat can scare a Manager out of the attempt. But Doc kept it on and it was a Great Sac bunt.
(I want to talk technical strategy on that bunt play. Runners 1st and 2nd. Sac is in order. The rage is to put that 1st baseman, Rizzo, right uo Kike’s ass. That can cause the Manager, to chicken out of the sacrifice. Edman bunted on the first pitch which surprised me. What I wan to know initially, is are the running the “Wheel Play”. You might take a pitch there and see if the Wheel is ON? It wasn’t and in that coverage, Kike can bunt the ball anywhere because there is no one to cover 3rd base.

Muncy made 2 difficult picks at 3rd look easy. His defensive chops are so much improve from seasons ago. He is the best defensive 3rd baseman his skills allow. And that looks like hours of hard work. He can pick-it coming forward and a step or two laterally. If he gets his hands on it, you’re out.

Shohei seems to be worth every penny. Pretty heads up play going to 3rd on the rocket double and the infielder failing to block the throw from Soto.

Let’s see if we can’t do this again tomorrow and Yamamoto giving us some innings. I expect him to show up.

Duke Not Snider

Helluva game.
Will this be a gut-punch that sends the Yankees reeling?
I don’t think so.
I’m still thinking Dodgers in 7.

dodgerram

If this series is 88 revisited Yamamoto will throw a shutout today and we will win in 5.😀

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Badger

“We didn’t miss on our scouting report on the Umpiring Crew”

Got that right. I still think an explanation is warranted. Why not the All Star crew for the most important series of the year.

Tight game, missed opportunities, unbelievable finish. Pitching did its job. That breaking ball to Stanton wasn’t a bad pitch, but it did miss its spot by about 6”. He’s anxious. Fastball on the knuckles everything else breaking down and away. Two seamer or change down and in would also be a good pitch on occasion. Same aapproach with Judge. You gotta show them the fastball, just don’t make a mistake with it. Soto? He can hit anything, just try to keep it all out of the tube and hope for the best.

We hit we win.

Bluto

So, I did some digging on this.

First, and most interesting to me, is the difference in how MLB grades its umpires compared to the scorecard. For example, MLB gives their umpires a 2-inch margin of error for missed calls off the plate—these are considered “acceptable” misses.

So that may be able to explain why the rankings on Twitter scorecards might not follow the internal MLB rankings.

(If confusing, what I mean is if these umpires are missing a lot of borderline calls, but they rarely miss calls outside the MLB’s acceptable margin of error, they would be ranked really high. AND! And! They would be ranked higher than the guy who never misses borderline calls but occasionally blows easy calls.)

Then there’s the union aspect of it, in that it’s a mixture between merit, seniority, and certain internal union protocols (including, but not limited to, no back-to-back series, and not being allowed to do the World Series two years in a row).

Also, a deep dive into yesterday’s umpiring:
https://www.umpscorecards.com/single_game/?game_id=775300

Badger

Well done Bluto.

As a former ump I must protest. I was taught “it’s a strike or it isn’t”. Just as “it’s an out or it isn’t.” To now know MLB accepts and rewards inaccuracies is in my opinion embarrassing.

tedraymond

Wow!!! What a incredible ending to an exciting and stomach churning game.

I got up early to read the blog’s comments. Phil, you pretty much covered what I was going to comment on, so I won’t be redundant.

I read your review of the umpires selections and rating yesterday mornings. My first thought was, why? Why would they select some of the worst ranked umps? Manfred can’t stop trying to wreck baseball. In the first inning Torres let us know that consistency was not going to be in play. Davis, later, announced that Torres was the first Venezuelan to umpire in a World Series. Of course he was. My question from above was answered.

Tommy Edman is a ballplayer. Sure he had a couple of moments defensively that caused some issues. But, he’s not an everyday SS. The mistakes were not easy plays. Also, he made a couple of spectacular plays. I would give him a three year extension for’ 26-’28. CT3 will be gone after next year so it works out well.

With Rodon pitching tonight I would think it’s a righty lineup at the bottom of the order. Will Muncy be benched for a righty bat? That bat would bring CT3 into play. I would stick with Muncy at 3B, I know Muncy has trouble with LH pitching, but Taylor is even worse with all pitching. Kiki at 2B, Edman at SS, and Pages playing CF. Rojas at SS? I would leave Edman at SS and keep him there for the remainder of the series.

The awesomeness of Aaron Judge continues to be missing for the Yankees. Let’s hope he’ll need more than six games to figure it out. Stanton is keeping the team in games right now with some timely homeruns. The rest of their lineup isn’t that impressive.

The bullpen continues to be clutch. I’m interested to see how Roberts and the front office set it up for tonight’s game.

Excited for tonight’s game. It would be fantastic if the Dodgers can go to New York up 2-0. Looking for Yamamoto to give us at least five innings.

Carry on.

In his last game behind the plate, Carlos Torres was the HPU in the final game of the season between LAD and Colorado, and he was downright horridly embarrassing.

And the next three HPU are worse than Torres.

OhioDodger

It is total bullshit. They have the means to fix this.

Wooowwww, history repeating itself 36 years later almost to the date!
What a game! What a win!Wins like that can carry a team to a title all the way. We have seen it before, hope we see it with this Dodgers team again.

We are at a vacation home in Tuscanny, Italy, at the moment. Internet is not very reliable and would you know it went down in the bottom of the 8th.
Just came back 2 hours ago and I just finished watching on MLB archives.
If I had watched it live my screaming after FF grand slam would have woken up the entire family for sure.

Now lets go up 2-0 today!

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Guys and gals, if youf did not already listen to the call by Steve Nelson on the Dodgers radio network do it (I just did). An all time classic. Always liked Nelson but with this call he made himself immortal in Dodger history.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

norcaldodgerfan

What a game! Flaherty and the BP pitched great, FF was amazing with the grand slam and Edman continues to amaze with his game. He did make an error early in the game, but his diving stop to save a run and getting the second out late in the game was nothing short of spectacular.

Would love to see the Dodgers get game #2 and go to NY up 2-0.

Go Dodgers.

SandyAmoros

Damn Freddie Freeman shut my mouth Shades of Gibson just marvelos go Dodgers

Dave

What a classic game. Something I’ve been wondering about is Lux’s ability to run the bases. He hasn’t stolen much. He hurt his knee just running and awkwardly collapsed tearing his knee up pretty bad. Last night he stumbled again and they immediately replaced him with CT3.

Tom1946

Can’t add any insight to the comments on the board about a classic baseball game. Freddy said it best for me: “it was what you dreamed about doing being in the backyard playing baseball with your brothers.” Go Dodgers!!!

Lux looks a little heavy to me. He’s not a power guy, so bulk isn’t needed. Lighten up dude.

Excellent analysis by Ted and Phil. I can’t add much that I haven’t added already. Spin the ball down to Judge and Stanton, high and tight low and away to everyone in their lineup. To everyone on the field – minimize mistakes. Don’t give anything away to these guys.

I assume it will be the right handed lineup to start the game. I don’t expect Rodón to be as effective as Cole, so the second half of this game could have different bats showing up. Roberts will use EVERYBODY in this series.

Dionysus

Edman should be opening day SS next year.

TennisMenace (TM)

100% agree. We definitely do not need a SS free agent signing. Don’t waste your money…instead, try to find a healthy pitcher or another RHB to play in the OF should we not re-sign Teoscar. I prefer we re-sign him…just pay the man!

Roberts is the man right now and will continue to be as long as the players do their job. Cortes didn’t do his job and now Boone is a bum. A Tampa Bay manager pitching decision all over again.

And I love it!

TennisMenace (TM)

lol…..my Yankee fan friends are upset Cortes came in to pitch, removing Cousins. I’m glad we aren’t upset at Robert’s for using Graterol.

“Fans are egotistical ignoramuses. They never miss a call, are smarter than any GM, think they can out strategize LaRussa and they pay $16,000 for a ticket to a baseball game. They all should be ignored and avoided”. Me, 11:45, October 26th, 2024.

tedraymond

👍90% agree. Maybe, not so much on resigning Teoscar. Depends on terms. Maybe, having a chance to go to the WS every year will make him more affordable.
TE full-time at SS with Rojas as a reserve.
Pitching, pitching, and more pitching.

OhioDodger

I too am not enamored of Teo. I would not go over 3 years for him. I think the money could be better utilized for pitching. Santander is a better choice IMO.

TennisMenace (TM)

Why not? What more could he do for us? Very clutch all year, plus he is an unbelievable team player…good for chemistry in the clubhouse. Besides, who would replace him? I’m so tired of revolving doors….lets keep some good guys for a few years at least….besides the super stars.

Bklyn2LA57

Corbin Burnes would be nice! And resign Teoscar.

OhioDodger

Victory has a thousand fathers. Defeat is an orphan.

Yanker fans losing their minds. Calling for Boony’s head.

Wayne

I can just imagine the uproar from Yankee fans Boone received last night.

tedraymond

Love the quote OhioDodger!

Yankee fan reaction not a surprise. It would be the same if Roberts had done something similar. Which he has done in the past.

Like I’ve mentioned, the expected short outings by the starting staff has helped Roberts. Basically, the front office, Roberts, and coaches can map out before the game who and when a pitcher will pitch. Is it full proof? No, but it minimizes the chance for mistakes. The pitchers need to succeed in their roles to make it all work. No pitcher should be put into a position that they’re not prepared to do. It’s proved so far to be a winning formula. It all works because of the talented bullpen.

It’s pretty cool to watch.

OhioDodger

I was surprised Doc sent Flaherty out to pitch the 6th inning last night.

Jeff Dominique

So was I but I am glad he did. They were trying to get one more inning out of him. Flaherty was pitching very well and deserved to go out for the 6th.

Bluto

Me too.

Will be very interesting if Roberts allows another pitcher to go a third time through.

In the world of analytics how does a manager ignore or is unaware of this stat? Why didn’t the Yankee manager put the ball on a tee for Freddie? The obsession with analytics determining so much of the game’s decisions and yet the above stat is not considered. I just shake my head.

Badger

So, looking at those numbers it’s clear to me that Freddie was due to make an out.

Bobby

So that clearly was the best baseball game I’ve ever been to. Only thing that will top this now is to be at a World Series clincher.

As Jack Buck said in 1988, “I (still) don’t believe what I just saw”

Bumsrap

Well covered everyone.

I might have scored the ball Edmand bobbled a hit. The ball exploded in front of him and took a high bounce. To catch ot cleanly, he would have had to guess correctly how it would bounce. Usually ground balls are predictable.

I have been comfortable with balls hit to Lux but not as optimistic as I would like to be when he is hitting.

Davis does not want to talk over crowd noise during big moments. I can see him reaching over to Smoltz and putting his hand over his mouth after Freddie’s home run.

Jeff Dominique

I do not know if anyone else caught this and mentioned it. If so, I apologize for repeating it. Gibson’s 1988 WS Game 1 walk off was almost to the minute of Freddie’s 2024 Game 1 walk off grand slam. Gibson’s homer had landed at 8:38 p.m. local time, Freeman’s cleared the wall at 8:39.

Make Mine Blue

Freeman’s HR was hit higher so it had 1 more minute of hang-time

Still shaking my head at Roberts leaving the infield playing in rather than at DR depth when Yanks had man of first and third with one out, would have been a routine DP ground ball rather than allowing a run to Yankee run to score. If someone already mentioned this, oh well I don’t actually read everyone’s posts if I am running behind. No I’m not calling for Roberts to be replaced before tonight’s game, so don’t get your undies in a bunch, just making an observation on a managerial blunder

Jeff Dominique

Very reasonable question. He could have brought Muncy and Freddie in and left Edman and Lux in DP depth. A ball hit to SS or 2B, neither player would get Chisholm at home. OTOH, Volpe runs very well and is extremely difficult to double up. He hit into 9 DP in 637 AB all year. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. What Treinen needed their was a K.

Jeff Dominique

That was a great game. It embodied everything that a WS game should be. The two best teams, with tons of HOF talent. Great pitching, great defense, great clutch hitting, solid base running (especially Chisholm). And oh yeah…the Dodgers won. The Dodgers won a game that Gerrit Cole started, even though he was brilliant, and that could prove to be very big in this series.

As good as Cole was, Flaherty was better until the Giancarlo Stanton HR. Giancarlo crushes near mistakes. He hit a 1-2 knuckle curve out of the strike zone, but not enough inside. Bad placement for a guy who kills that kind of pitch. One bad pitch all night.

But Jack Flaherty also had 19 swings and misses. Gerrit Cole 9. Anthony Banda had 4 in the 5 batters he faced. Alex Vesia had 3, and Brusdar Graterol, the king of soft contract, had 2 whiffs. Other than Cole, Luke Weaver was the only other NYY pitcher to have a swing and miss He had 1. As a team, the Dodgers made contact, and a lot of them were loud outs. But only 10 whiffs in 9.2 innings. Keep making contact and good things happen.

I agree with those who believe the Dodgers have their 2025 opening day SS…Tommy Edman. He had two hits, and both off a RHP. He made a number of excellent defensive plays. And I agree with Bums that the ball he got the error on could have been called a hit. I had a friend ask me if I thought if Edman had fed the ball cleanly to Lux in the 10th, would he have been able to get the DP. I said no because (a) Volpe runs to well, and (b) Lux is not very good on the DP turn.

That was a hard 0-fer for Mookie. He crushed the ball three times with nothing to show for it except a needed sac fly. I think it bodes well for Mookie.

Tonight it is Yoshinobu Yamamoto vs LHP Carlos Rodón. Some LAD hitters hit Rodón very well. Others not so much.

·      Kiké Hernández – 3-6 with 3 HR
·      Tommy Edman – 2-6 with 1 HR
·      Chris Taylor – 5-9 with 1 HR
·      Shohei Ohtani – 1-3 with 1 HR and 3 BB
·      Freddie Freeman – 1-7 with a HR

The bad…Mookie is 1-19 with 4 K’s against Rodón, Teoscar is 1-9 with 3 K, Smith 1-8 with 2 K, and Max 0-4 and 1 K. Look for CT3 to start at 2B against Rodón.

Jeff Dominique

I am not going to complain, but Kike’ is coming in from CF to 2B, Edman to CF, and Miggy Ro to SS. With the way CT3 hits Rodon, I would have found a spot for him.

Wayne

Okay to disagree ..does not necessarily mean complaining.

Aaron Judge’s miss rate on sliders this Postseason is 70.0% –

14 misses on 20 swings.

Badger

DO NOT try to sneak an inside fastball by Soto. Big mistake. Chin music then spin it down.

Cassidy

We hit we win! I like the bottom of our lineup better than their’s

Yeah, he missed the location pretty badly on that one.

Soto’s not as much fun to watch as Tatis, but for a non-Dodger he’s pretty fun indeed.

Bobby

Yamamoto stuff aside the Soto meatball pitch is excellent today.

Badger

Too much mustard on that hot dog for my liking.

OhioDodger

Wow. That doesn’t seem possible.

OhioDodger

Yea, I guess the opportunities are limited.

Badger

20/20 hindsight but I see no reason to do that.

Cassidy

My wife says not to worry if we lose Ohtani. We have Tommy Edman

Duke Not Snider

Combined one-hitter through eight…
wow.

Cassidy

Soto is so good AND he’s really good in the big moments!

Bobby

I like it. Yanks weren’t going to lie down. We took it and then stopped them when it mattered.
