Vesia came in and Trevino PH for Wells and flied out on the first pitch to end it. The offense did not do much after the third inning when they scored 3. The did hit 3 homers, with Teo’s three-run shot the big blow. NOTE: As news of the extent of Ohtani’s injury is reported, I will update this post. LA heads to NY up 2-0.

                                                                                                                               UPDATE ON OHTANI

Postgame Roberts said that Ohtani after the game had range of motion and good strength in his left arm. He also said there would be imaging tomorrow. Felt this was good news. Explained on MLBTR as a shoulder subluxation, or partial dislocation. They expect Ohtani to be back in the lineup for game 3.

I mean the whole season goes by and the Dodgers don’t have one hot streak, but the playoffs begin and their on one.

Let’s hope it lasts two more games.

Let’s also hope there’s good news on Ohtani.

dodgerram

Butane on Monday. I trust in Striker and his make up for the big games.
Lots of pressure for the Yankees, almost a much win for them.
They are certainly rattled and p.issed a bit on how they lost the first two games. They easily could be up 2-0. That is how close both games were.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

“and they’re on one.”

Norcaldodgerfan

Wow what an ending. Treinen looked exhausted. Glad there is a day off tomorrow and his rather suboptimal performance tonight highlights the loss of Phillips.

Hope Ohtani is OK. If he dislocated his shoulder I hope it gets put back in place and they can keep the swelling down. Right now I’m thinking that might be the best case scenario.

Dionysus

That there’s the difference between Freddie Freeman and Alex Trevino.

Bluto

Dave Roberts said it’s a shoulder injury for Shohei Ohtani. He said the strength and range of motion are good, but tests will be done.

Northmsdodger

I.heard on mlb channel dislocated shoulder.

OhioDodger

Whew!! Got a bit shaky there at the end.

Phil Jones

Good game. Great win.

Treinen made it interesting. Doc has sure shown confidence in Treinen that I didn’t see all season. I’m expecting Doc popping out of his seat like a Jack-IN-The-Box a couple of times and it just didn’t happen.
But, I’m surprised that Doc stayed with Treinen instead of getting Vesia up earlier and getting him in the game before the last out. Not a criticism. Just an interesting decision. But All’s Well that Ends Well

It is interesting how the “closer” role has changed for the Dodgers. There isn’t one. Instead of the traditional pitcher, by what inning it is, the new strategy, is no matter the inning, the pitcher matches the hitters. It is really an advance idea but it works because THAT pitcher does his job. It’s a beautiful little chess game that is being employed as all the pieces perform.

Andy Fletcher had a good game as the HPU. He outperformed his scouting report. Nice to see him get up for a game. He missed very few pitches, all night.

Tommy Edman is a perfect contact hitter sandwiched in the line-up, although he did Go Yard. I’d enjoy a line-up with a nice mix of Contact & Slug. Like we’re doing now.

I had hoped Ohtani would attempt a steal a hitter before he did. 0 and 2 to Mookie, I’m running. In the old days you might worry about a pitch-out there, but they don’t do that anymore. Otherwise, it’s the pitch to run on, likely a chase pitch.

I’m no doctor but I hope his shoulder only popped out of socket. They can pop back in a dislocation. Big difference if it’s a dislocation vs a separation. Let’s prey for the best.
I played with a second baseman whose shoulder would pop out frequently. A dislocation. We’d pop it back in and he kept playing. Eventually, you get it repaired. That’s what happened with Bellinger. We moved him to center to keep him from diving at first and popping out his shoulder. Let’s all hope that was all it is.

SandyAmoros

Did what they needed to do hope they keep their mojo in the City. Hope Ohtani will be able to play remaining games and Walker has his stuff. go Dodgers

Badger

I may be the only one that doesn’t want Ohtani running in that situation. It’s late, you’re up 3, why risk anything? And what a crap slide. If we are fortunate enough to get him back, please don’t let him do that again.

Yes, Fletcher was better, but… those MLB acceptable margins still bother me.

Box: Ohtani Ofer. Muncy 0fer. Rojas 0fer. Kiké 0fer but with two hard hit balls right at somebody. He looks close. Betts OPSn over 1.000 and Edman.935. What a pick-up he’s been. Feels to me it will be very important to score a plethora of runs in New York. The bullpen game coming up concerns me. With Phillips gone and Treinen looking fatigued is it all about to catch up with them?

Gulp.

dodgerram

In the bullpen game I would do a piggy back with an opener (Brasier ?) then Knach and Casparius and HOneywell.

Agree on Ohtani not trying to steal in that situation.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff

Buehler is up next game. Brasier should not be allowed to get anywhere near that mound unless we go 3-0 or have such a big lead that no comeback is possible for them. Casparius should be ready for at least 2 innings. Knack and Honeywell are still dubious. Knack HRs, bad bad.

dodgerram

Right on many accounts, but the Dodgers will have to find some innings from Knack, Casparius and Honeywell somewhere in the series

My hope is Buehler throws a gem on Monday and we go up 3-0. Then a bullpen game with our low leverage relievers at the top and hope we can somehow stay in it til the later innings.

Game 3 is a big one for both teams with that bullpen game coming up in game 4.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Badger

“but the Dodgers will have to find some innings from Knack, Casparius and Honeywell somewhere in the series”

Yes they will. And the plan will be: 1. Score double digits in every game going forward 2. don’t let those guys pitch to the top of the order.

And good luck with that.

Jeff

Brace yourself, Badger. The Dodgers are going to win this series. Why even entertain a concerning thought.

Badger

Why?

Because that’s why.

I do agree the Dodgers are going to win. I also believe it’s going to take a Herculean job from the entire roster to get it done.

Badger

Sorry. That sounded more belligerent than it was meant.

david

As for Cody, His career as a Dodger was never the same after that injury

Badger

Bellinger is a bean pole. Ohtani is an oak tree.

Phil Jones

david, that’s not true that Bellinger’s struggles were due to his blowing his shoulder while celebrating with that stupid forearm bump deal. He had dislocations previously but that one required surgery.
Bellinger had a slow start in 2020, going 5-for-36 in his first eight games. Unlike in previous years, Bellinger was making weak contact with pitches, leading to a large number of groundouts. This was well before his tibia fracture in 2021 where Alexander started measuring reduced exit velocity. His numbers for the whole season saw a drop-off from the previous year: in 56 games of the shortened season. Bellinger hit only .239 /.789 with 12 homers. In the post season of 18 games, Belli hit .212 / .770 with 0 homers and a 33% K rate.
Bellinger’s drops in batting average was explained by his constant experimentation with his swing, which prevented him from locking into pitches the way he had the season prior.
Despite injuring his shoulder on Oct. 18, during the NLCS, Bellinger continued to play in the World Series, and he celebrated his Game 1 home run by foot-tapping his teammates rather than high-fiving them. Bellinger underwent surgery for the affected shoulder in November 2020.
He was struggling before the injury and had a good season with the Cubs after the injury.

dodgerram

So far this series is 1988 WS 2.0.
With the FF walk off HR, then an ace like performance by our starter the next day and now the unvertainty of our star player (fingers crossed Ohtani will be good to in Game ).
Yoshi was absolutely lights out, simply amazing how he held that potent Yankees offense to one solo HR by Soto for 6.1 innings.

Lets hope the rest of the series goes as 1988 too. Then we will have a parade end of this week.

Treinen looked shaky for the second game in a row and looks a bit tired but Vesia came to the rescue .

Being up 2-0 opens up many possibilities how to go the next two games with our pitching.Lot of pressure for NY with Game 3 almost being a must win for them.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TennisMenace (TM)

How long can we expect to continue our mastery over Aaron Judge? Obviously, guys like Treinen and Yamamoto with their awesome curveballs keep him off base……but I don’t think Buehler has that amazing pitch. And game 4 using the bullpen is a concern because some guys will pitch that will make us hold our breaths. Sure hope Ohtani can recover from this day or rest. Glad it is 2-0 and not 1-1 with Yankees having a big 9th inning like our 10th the night before. Phew!

Cassidy

It’s like Judge and Volpe have never seen a slider. Amazing!

Duke Not Snider

Treinen does not have an ordinary slider.
I wonder whether Roberts sent Shohei, or if Shohei has the license to steal on his own. He’s made a similar slide about 80 times this season so the injury is surprising.
Sure hope he’s good to go in the Bronx.
Those games should be intense. The Yankees are proud and won’t want to be humiliated. And their fans aren’t exactly laid back….

Last edited 26 days ago by Duke Not Snider
Jeff

I agree with Badger about not sending Shohei in that situation. No need to steal the base, we were up by 3.

Wayne

Buehler is still “evolving” as a new pitcher returning from his 2nd TJ. Maybe he’s added some new “wrinkles” to his repertoire of pitches since his last start, ..and surprise the Yankee batters in game 3.

Make Mine Blue

3 things I expect to see in Game 3:

Ohtani will be in the line-up and should be relatively fine (I have experience playing with a shoulder subluxation)

Buehler will pitch well (Buehler feeds off all the noise and hatred coming from the fans in opponents yard. I actually think he loves that negative energy and shutting up those fans)

Likely to have less runs scored by way of the HR (getting colder at night and these games will be 8:08 start times in NYC). A little more traditional scoring will probably be in order for these games.

I think the Series does not go back to LA (Dodgers will win it all on the road)

tedraymond

Another fun game to watch. the third inning for the Dodgers set up the team for the rest of the game. Their in season MO of scoring crooked numbers early and then nothing the rest of the game almost cost them a victory.

I will never stop bitching about this, but it drives me crazy when they pull a pitcher when that pitcher is completely shutting down a team and has a reasonable pitch count. There’s a good chance that Yamamoto might not need to pitch another game this season. What the hell are you saving him for? The postseason? Even if he needs to pitch another game he is more than capable of doing so.

With a BP game coming up, by extending a starter, it could allow the BP to save an inning or two and be better prepared for that Game 4 outing. With Phillips out and Treinen looking exhausted things might get a bit uneasy with the BP for a game or two. It will, most likely, give Honeywell and Casparius a chance to shine.

Sorry for the minor rant. Otherwise, I have been very impressed with how the team is playing in the postseason. One game there are players doing well and others not so good. The next game someone else steps up offensively. There’s not much more we could have asked for from Flaherty and Yamamoto. The BP has been almost flawless. It’s a total team effort. Top to bottom. Even Dave Roberts. Lol.

dodgerram

Agree on Yoshi. In the situation I too would have stayed with him . He was dealing and shoving. Showed no sign of fatigue whatsoever. Who knows if the reliever coming in has the same stuff ? In that case it worked well so Roberts is vindicated.

If Shohei should be out it would be a devastating blow to the Dodgers but just as in 88`they are well equipped to survive it and close out the series.

Game 1 it wasFreddy, Game 2 it was Yoshi.
Two more heroes needed for two more wins and a parade downtown LA!

Bluto

It’s not “saving” the pitcher!

Badger

Well reasoned Ted.

Yoshi went 6.1, which may be a few outs more than was planned. He threw 86 pitches, many were high leverage. That’s enough on his shoulder.

He did his job. Now it’s time for others to do theirs. And after he left, that’s exactly what happened. Now, if needed, he can do it again if necessary.

Well played Doc.

Phil Jones

Ted, I have had to work to condition my brain to get used to the new way to manage a pitching staff. I used to be exactly like you over pulling pitchers who appear to have a lot left in the tank. I had to just resign myself and stop questioning and just accept the new reality.
The Yankee fans had the same bitch in game 1, when Cole was pulled after a 7th inning leadoff single by Teoscar. Cole, through 6 had given up 1 run, on 4 hits and was at 88 pitches. He sure looked capable of more, to me.
But not Aaron Boone. He went to Holmes. Had I seen Cole out, I would have been running to the bat-rack.
Boone also was questioned critically about going with Nestor Cortez.
Moral of that story is don’t make a pitching change, that doesn’t work.
I now watch all these moves unconditionally, but I keep a thought in mind of how it would have gone when the Skipper came out to pull Bob Gibson at 88 pitches and a 4 hitter going.

Badger

Rookie Yamamoto coming off shoulder injury – Bob Gibson.

Can’t wrap my head around that one.

“Moral of that story is don’t make a pitching change, that doesn’t work”

Now that’s some Abner Doubledown Confucius wisdom right there. Wish I’d said that.

Phil Jones

I was referring the hook on Garrett Cole, not Yamamoto. Like I said I’ve gotten used to the pitching maneuvers.
I can be a little sarcastic when it comes to second-guessing Managers over moves that fail to work because the player doesn’t do his job.

Badger

I was being serious. Great quote. Funny.

I misread your Cole comment. My bad.

tedraymond

I appreciate the feedback. Everyone’s opinion is valid because there can’t be a proven result because it’s not allowed to happen.
Or something along those thoughts.
🤔

Bumsrap

It used to be, maybe still is, the team bus travelled through a gauntlet between their hotel and Yankee Stadium.

Like Phil, I’m loving the mix of contact hitters sprinkled through a line-up.

Is Edmand now a 5 year, $100MM player?

Will Dodgers have a 7 man rotation nextyear?

Bluto

What is a gauntlet in that metaphor?

Badger

I’m guessing it would be rabid Yankee fans 24/7/72. Just a guess.

Bumsrap

Throwing things at the bus

Bluto

Thank god we have moved on from that!

People are better than that.

Badger

They are?

tedraymond

Yes on Edman extended, but I would feel better to do another CT3 contract (4/$60) except for Edman and not CT3.

I say no on a 7 man, but could definitely see a 6 man if they can get reasonable number of healthy options.

OhioDodger

Huge win last night. Big difference going to NY up 2-0 vs tied at 1-1. Still lots of work to do.

I am still not over 1978. Went up 2-0 and lost the series.

Badger

“Went up 2-0 and lost the series”

No we didn’t. That never happened. Stop saying that.

OhioDodger

I assume you are being sarcastic.

Bobby

In 1978, the Dodgers won games 1 and 2 at Dodger Stadium, the Yankees won games 3, 4, 5 at Yankee Stadium, and the Yankees won Game 6 at Dodger Stadium.

In 1981, the Yankees won games 1 and 2 at Yankee Stadium, the Dodgers won games 3, 5, 5 at Dodger Stadium, and the Dodgers won Game 6 at Yankee Stadium.

Hopefully 2024 does not follow this trend.

Phil Jones

And what do the 1978 and the 1981 teams have to do with THIS team, and cause for concern? Nobody on this team was even born yet, let alone remember those losses.
Different everything.
This is one of those useless pearls that Joe Davis drops in a broadcast sandwiched between John Smoltz’s constant overanalyzes of what pitch should be coming next. Predicting fastball or breaking ball, John is less then 50% correct.

OhioDodger

Just pointing out the fact that this series is not over and there is still work to be done.. Don’t get overconfident.

Jeff Dominique

I agree, the series is not over. But there is no correlation between the 2024 World Series and the ’78 and ’81 series anymore than the ’88 World Series, or the ’63 WS, a LAD sweep. Or the 1965 or 1966 World Series. What happened in prior World Series has zero correlation to the current year.

OhioDodger

It may not have any correlation to this year but is a reminder that this thing is not over. We still have a lot of work to do.

Badger

Of course

tedraymond

I checked and OhioDodger is correct. Dodgers won two at home and then lost four straight in 1978.

OhioDodger

It may not have anything to do with this series, but, it does say that it far from over. Still a lot of work to do to bring home this title.

Badger

It was a weak attempt at humor. I realize what happened. I saw it all.

OhioDodger

I figured you did not want to be reminded of it. It still chafes my ass.

dodgerram

Question:
Is there a way the Dodgers could get Phillpps on the roster if he feels better the next days ?
I know he would have to replace an injured player but he could be absolute huge with Treinen struggling just a little bit.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Badger

Trienen’s slider is still breaking like The Wedge. Judge can’t hit it. Stanton can’t hit. Don’t pitch him back to back days and I think he might be ok.

dodgerram

Agree on Treinen needng some rest.

But Phllipps with his sweeper would be huge agailnst Judge and Stanton too on days when Blake is not available.

How bad is Phillipps hurt ? Is there a chance he could come back in time ?

The availablitly of both Vesia and Bazooka already has paid dividends for the Dodgers.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can we get Knack to try to steal second and slide like Ohtani

Badger

“and he slides like that all the time”

Nonsense. If he slid like that all the time he’d pop his shoulder out of the socket all the time.

One of the first things I learned about sliding was hands in the air. And I did it that way until my final year of competitive ball. And we were never taught the head first slide. Too many things can go wrong.

Last edited 26 days ago by Badger
Bobby

So then the steal attempt itself wasn’t the issue, it was the wrong technique used when he slid.

Therefore, the attempt was a fine call, as he did it 63 times this year, without injuring his shoulder.

Badger

I would not have done it. And yes, it was an awkward slide.

Old Bear 48

Just reporting what Roberts said in the presser. I went back and watched some games, especially the 50-50 game and he always put his hand down.

Badger

and he always put his hand down.

Not like that he didn’t. Using your arm as a shock absorber on a slide? Come on man.

Old Bear 48

He absolutely puts his left hand down the same way every time. I watched almost the entire last month of games. Every time he slides, he uses his left hand. Don’t shoot the messenger. Maybe he put more pressure on it on that particular slide.

Badger

I watched too Bear. He mostly drags it. But this time he came down on it. Hard. Hard enough to cause a humerus subluxation. You can bet he won’t be doing that again.

Wally Moonshot

I was taught the pop up slide. The only part of the body that contacted the ground was the lower leg. The “pop up” happened when the lead foot hit the bag. I personally was never injured in 20 years of baseball sliding like this.

Badger

Me too Wally. No hands in dirt. Of course we didn’t use gloves. And the fields weren’t exactly groomed. A lot of rocks. And I do recall wearing sliding pads for the first time. Wore them every year after that too.

Phil Jones

Guys good at sliding feet first had a number of different slides. Hook slides on either hip to get your face away from a throw, pop-up slides, take-out slides which aren’t taught or “a thing” anymore, a slide by the bag or plate and a roll-back with a hand and plain old slide where the goal was to get your back dirty. Badger’s “hands in the air”. I too never made a head first slide in my life except back to a base. You filled your fists with dirt or grabbed your batting gloves when they came into fashion. I did tear about 5 layers of skin off my knee doing pop-up slides.
Getting low on your back also prevented getting tagged out on the head on a throw up the line.
We also wore “sliding pads”. I bet those can no longer be spotted in a clubhouse

Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, who sustained a left shoulder subluxation in Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday, is “in a great spot” and will play in Game 3 on Monday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told ESPN on Sunday.

Singing the Blue

will play in Game 3″.

Does that mean he’ll be in the starting lineup or will just make an appearance sometime during the game like, for example, as a pinch runner.

Old Bear 48

Means he is in the starting lineup.

dodgerram

Great news!!!!!

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old Bear 48

He did not travel with the team. He flew to NY after his MRI. No results given yet.

Badger

How can they say he will be in the lineup without first seeing the MRI results?

Bluto

Blame that asian guy on the bench, Badger!

What else could he do?

Last edited 26 days ago by Bluto
Badger

What Asian guy? You mean Roberts? He’s not Asian, he’s from Okinawa.

And before someone goes ape, that’s a joke.

I suppose he could reserve comment. Too much to ask.

Bluto

Meanwhile in Arizona:

prospect Zyhir Hope had an RBI single through the right side in the fifth. 101.5 mph EV.

That was Hope’s seventh batted ball in play at 100+ mph in Statcast AFL games this fall.
