Here We Go: 2024 World Series Starts Tonight

It is finally time for the games to begin. Dodgers-Yankees from Dodger Stadium starts at 5:08 PST tonight. For me it will be an hour later. Gerrit Cole for the Yankees against Jack Flaherty for the Dodgers. Flaherty has faced the Yankees once in his 8-year career. He gave up 4 runs in 6 innings. But he got the win. Cole has faced LA 8 times in his 12-year career and has a 4-2 record with an ERA of 5.01. Most of that work came with the Pirates.

The rosters were announced just a little while ago. Blow to the Dodgers, Phillips is out due to a leg injury. Vesia, Graterol and Rojas added. Rojas beefs up the defense. Not sure how he will hit after being out for this long. I hope everyone enjoys the series.  Will post a summary after the game. LET’S GO DODGERS! Pitchers: Banda, Brasier, Buehler, Casparius, Flaherty, Graterol, Honeywell, Hudson, Knack, Kopec, Treinen, Vesia, Yamamoto. DH, Ohtani. C, Smith, Barnes. Inf, Freeman, Lux, Muncy, Rojas, OF, Hernandez, Pages. Inf-OF. Betts, Edman, Hernandez, Taylor.

There was a “Master Class in Scheduling” chart at The Athletic showing every reliever and how they were used in the last series. It was impressive. Every reliever knows exactly how and when they will be used. You can bet they will be as prepared as possible when their assignment comes up.

I guess they still trust Knack to provide a ‘bulk’ type outing in at least 1 game. By bulk, I mean 2 innings

Dionysus

Knack is 100% emergency bulk guy/mop-up man.

Bumsrap

As I remember in 55. Dodgers lost first 2 games at Yankee Stadium and in 56 won first 2 in Ebbetts Field.

Bobby

I believe we lost the first 2 at Yankee Stadium in 1981, then won 4 in a row.

I wasn’t a fan then, but man, that must’ve been a wild range of emotions for Dodger fans

Wayne

Incredible series!

Jeff Dominique

NYY is going with 13 pitchers. They added Nestor Cortes and cut Jon Berti.

Starting pitchers: Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil (4)
Bullpen: Luke Weaver, Tommy Kahnle, Clay Holmes, Mark Leiter Jr., Tim Hill, Jake Cousins, Tim Mayza, Nestor Cortes, Marcus Stroman (9)

Bluto

Stroman and Mayza are not used.

Stroman not at all, and Mayza in extremely rare situations.

They are pretty much a 8 or 9 man pen.

It’s interesting.

Jeff Dominique

Bear, where did you read that Phillips is out due to a leg injury. Per Juan Toribio – Dodgers MLB.com Beat Writer:

“But on the flip side, the Dodgers were also dealt with another unfortunate blow as right-hander Evan Phillips will not be on the World Series roster due to an injury. Phillips suffered an arm injury during his outing in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series against the Mets on Sunday.”

Badger

Wow. That hurts.

Jeff Dominique

Typical LAD roster construction:

  • 4 infielders
  • 2 outfielders
  • 4 infielders/outfielders

They love their flexibility.

NYY OTOH has:

  • 3 infielders
  • 6 outfielders
  • 2 infielders/outfielders

NYY has 3 RHSP, 1 LHSP (Rodón), 6 RHRP, 3 LHRP (Cortes, Hill, Mayza)

Joe Kelly was ruled out, however it is also being reported he will be with the team and could be called upon if there is an injury. I assume that Edgardo Henriquez will be with the team for the same reason.

If Vesia and Graterol are truly “healthy” that is a big advantage for LAD.

Per Jack Harris of the LA Times:

“Andrew Friedman said Evan Phillips’ arm wasn’t bouncing back well in the NLCS, and that he “tightened up” during Game 6

He said leaving Phillips off the roster was “really disappointing” but that they didn’t want to put him in harm’s way.

Friedman also said that the way MLB playoff roster rules work, the team wouldn’t have been able to replace Phillips on the roster if he was unable to pitch since this was an issue he dealt with in a previous round.”

Singing the Blue

I would guess the same would apply to Rojas but they decided to take a chance with him. Although maybe it only applies to the round previous to the current one rather than “a previous round”, in which case it wouldn’t apply since he wasn’t on the roster for the NLCS.

The way Andrew Friedman said that, it makes me think if Phillips feels better after 3-5 more days off, he could replace an “injured” player on the roster towards the end of the series.

Dionysus

Doubt it

Singing the Blue

Maybe we’re just talking semantics here, but Phillips is not on the roster so I think he could technically be substituted for an injured pitcher during the series.

At least I think that was what Bobby was saying.

Of course, considering how transparent the Dodgers are with injuries, Phillips could be having TJ while I’m writing this.

I don’t think those apply in the roster creating part of the process. If the roster is set, and then a player is removed for injury then they cannot return.

The Dodgers could say Phillips wasn’t placed on the roster because he had Jury Duty, if they wanted to.

OhioDodger

Yep STB, you nailed it.

Part of the calculus in leaving Phillips off the initial Dodgers World Series roster is how Major League Baseball rules are worded. Per MLB Rule 41(a)(4):

A Club may request permission from the Commissioner or the Commissioner’s designee to replace on the Club’s active roster for the remainder of a post-season series a player who is unable to render service in such post-season series because of an acute, non-chronic injury or ailment (not recurring soreness over time) that occurred after the Club’s roster for such series had been submitted, provided that the Club submits written proof of the injury to the Commissioner or the Commissioner’s designee.

(Emphasis mine).

Because Phillip’s arm fatigue is pre-existing, had he remained on the roster but wouldn’t have been able to fully recover in time, the Dodgers would not have been able to replace him on the roster, unless he suffered a new injury.

I just noticed the Post comparing the two team’s lineups. One of my pet peeves is comparing position by position and then talk about hitting. For me, all comparisons should be lineups. Leadoff vs leadoff etc. Otherwise a good writeup but since it is a pet peeve, decided to belated say something.

Funny stuff at todays press conference:

This article further clarifies Evan Phillips’ possible return for the WS.

Badger

Came here expecting to see conversations about the game. Nope.

Cassidy

Don’t hit don’t win

Cassidy

Ok. Everyone raise their hand who was ready to jump Robert’s for bringing in Graterol there.

OhioDodger

Going with how he has managed the NLDS and NLCS, I was surprised he brought Flaherty back to start the 6th inning.

Cassidy

Lux and Smith just killing us!

OhioDodger

There you go.

Jimbo

So far the hitters just haven’t come through with runners in scoring position. They’ve had chances.

Keith

Phil you had a good read on this plate umpire, I think he’s the worst ball and strike guy I’ve seen so far in the playoffs.

during the regular season I wouldn’t worry about it too much, but these players deserve better.

Missed opportunities.

Cassidy

Not that opportunity!!!!

Wayne

They took advantage of Treinen’s weakness – stole bases off his slow-delivery.

Does a healthy Rojas turn the double-play that Edman flubbed in the 10th?

Keith

Who knows but how can anyone question Edmans play in the playoffs

Wayne

Lux slips, and can’t get to 3rd base….

OhioDodger

Kirk Gibson, move over..

Keith

Good for Freddie he deserves every good thing that happens to him

“High fly ball into right field, she is gone!
“In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.

Pee Wee Grogan

Wonder why Boone went with Cortes over Hill…

Dodgers will take it ….an instant classic

Now do it again…
