Dodgers Bullpen Best in MLB!?!
The DFA for Brasier was somewhat a surprise. Ryan was the odd man out...
This makes me believe that at this point, Ben Casparius is going to play a big role in this series.
There was a “Master Class in Scheduling” chart at The Athletic showing every reliever and how they were used in the last series. It was impressive. Every reliever knows exactly how and when they will be used. You can bet they will be as prepared as possible when their assignment comes up.
I guess they still trust Knack to provide a ‘bulk’ type outing in at least 1 game. By bulk, I mean 2 innings
Knack is 100% emergency bulk guy/mop-up man.
As I remember in 55. Dodgers lost first 2 games at Yankee Stadium and in 56 won first 2 in Ebbetts Field.
They swept the Yankees in Brooklyn to go up 3-2. They lost game 6 at Yankee Stadium, 5-1. Ford beat Spooner. Then Podres shut them out 2-0 in game 7 beating Tommy Bryne. In 81, they lost the first two at Yankee Stadium, swept the three at Dodger Stadium and won game 6 in New York. Podres, Labine and Craig got the wins in Brooklyn.
I believe we lost the first 2 at Yankee Stadium in 1981, then won 4 in a row.
I wasn’t a fan then, but man, that must’ve been a wild range of emotions for Dodger fans
Yes, and that was ramped up because in all three games in Los Angeles, they won by just 1 run. Game 3 5-4, Game 4 8-7, Game 5 2-1. Fernando won game 3 but he put LA in a 4-3 hole allowing 2 homers by the third inning. But LA jumped-on George Frazier for 3 in the fifth inning. Game 4 they were in a 4-0 hole by the 3rd. They scored 2 in the 3rd and 1 in the 5th. Yankees scored 2 in the sixth. Dodgers scored 3 in the sixth and 2 in the seventh to go up 8-6. Yankees scored 1 in the eighth for the 8-7 final. They beat Frazier again. Ruess pitched a gem in game 5, winning 2-1. He beat Ron Guidry. Yanks only run scored on a single by Pinella. Dodgers were blanked until Guererro and Garvey homered off of Guidry in the seventh. Yankees had 5 hits to the Dodgers 4. Oddity, Davey Lopes pulled a Willie Davis and made 3 errors in the game, but luckily for LA not one of them scored. Game 6 LA blew the Yankees out but only after they lifted Tommy John who gave up just 1 run. Frazier came in and the Dodgers lit him up again. He lost 3 games in the series. Hooton got the win, but Steve Howe pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Rudy May, who also passed away this week at the age of 80, pitched in that series.
Incredible series!
Yes, it was, and it was a first since there was not one series MVP, but three. Yeager, Guererro and Cey shared the honors.
According to the roster on the Yankees website, they are going with 14 position players and just 12 pitchers. Dodgers more conventional 13-13.
NYY is going with 13 pitchers. They added Nestor Cortes and cut Jon Berti.
Starting pitchers: Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil (4)
Bullpen: Luke Weaver, Tommy Kahnle, Clay Holmes, Mark Leiter Jr., Tim Hill, Jake Cousins, Tim Mayza, Nestor Cortes, Marcus Stroman (9)
Late change, that was just posted.
Stroman and Mayza are not used.
Stroman not at all, and Mayza in extremely rare situations.
They are pretty much a 8 or 9 man pen.
It’s interesting.
Bear, where did you read that Phillips is out due to a leg injury. Per Juan Toribio – Dodgers MLB.com Beat Writer:
Wow. That hurts.
It was earlier in the season. My bad.
Typical LAD roster construction:
They love their flexibility.
NYY OTOH has:
NYY has 3 RHSP, 1 LHSP (Rodón), 6 RHRP, 3 LHRP (Cortes, Hill, Mayza)
Joe Kelly was ruled out, however it is also being reported he will be with the team and could be called upon if there is an injury. I assume that Edgardo Henriquez will be with the team for the same reason.
If Vesia and Graterol are truly “healthy” that is a big advantage for LAD.
Per Jack Harris of the LA Times:
“Andrew Friedman said Evan Phillips’ arm wasn’t bouncing back well in the NLCS, and that he “tightened up” during Game 6
He said leaving Phillips off the roster was “really disappointing” but that they didn’t want to put him in harm’s way.
Friedman also said that the way MLB playoff roster rules work, the team wouldn’t have been able to replace Phillips on the roster if he was unable to pitch since this was an issue he dealt with in a previous round.”
I would guess the same would apply to Rojas but they decided to take a chance with him. Although maybe it only applies to the round previous to the current one rather than “a previous round”, in which case it wouldn’t apply since he wasn’t on the roster for the NLCS.
The way Andrew Friedman said that, it makes me think if Phillips feels better after 3-5 more days off, he could replace an “injured” player on the roster towards the end of the series.
Doubt it
No, once he is removed for injury, he cannot return to the roster. He is out for the entire series. If someone does get injured, the Dodgers would have to petition the commissioner’s office for a replacement. I think, not really sure of the rule. But it would have to be someone who was on the 40-man.
Maybe we’re just talking semantics here, but Phillips is not on the roster so I think he could technically be substituted for an injured pitcher during the series.
At least I think that was what Bobby was saying.
Of course, considering how transparent the Dodgers are with injuries, Phillips could be having TJ while I’m writing this.
I don’t think those apply in the roster creating part of the process. If the roster is set, and then a player is removed for injury then they cannot return.
The Dodgers could say Phillips wasn’t placed on the roster because he had Jury Duty, if they wanted to.
Yep STB, you nailed it.
Part of the calculus in leaving Phillips off the initial Dodgers World Series roster is how Major League Baseball rules are worded. Per MLB Rule 41(a)(4):
(Emphasis mine).
Because Phillip’s arm fatigue is pre-existing, had he remained on the roster but wouldn’t have been able to fully recover in time, the Dodgers would not have been able to replace him on the roster, unless he suffered a new injury.
Kevin Kiermaier has most likely played his last MLB game. He plans to retire after the Series. If LA wins, he would get the ring he missed out on when he was with the Rays. My problem is LA has zero LH bats on the bench.
Starting Lineups: Yankees: Torres 2B, Soto RF, Judge Cf, Stanton DH, Chisholm 3B, Rizzo 1B, Volpe SS, Wells C, Verdugo LF, Cole P. Dodgers: Ohtani DH, Betts RF, Freeman 1B, Hernandez LF, Muncy 3B, Hernandez CF, Smith C, Lux 2B. Edman SS, Flaherty P.
I just noticed the Post comparing the two team’s lineups. One of my pet peeves is comparing position by position and then talk about hitting. For me, all comparisons should be lineups. Leadoff vs leadoff etc. Otherwise a good writeup but since it is a pet peeve, decided to belated say something.
Funny stuff at todays press conference:

This article further clarifies Evan Phillips’ possible return for the WS.

Came here expecting to see conversations about the game. Nope.
Don’t hit don’t win
Ok. Everyone raise their hand who was ready to jump Robert’s for bringing in Graterol there.
Going with how he has managed the NLDS and NLCS, I was surprised he brought Flaherty back to start the 6th inning.
Lux and Smith just killing us!
You watching the game???? Smith drove in the only run. How about Ohtani, Betts and Freeman all stranding a runner in scoring position??? Ohtani and Betts with less than 2 outs.
There you go.
So far the hitters just haven’t come through with runners in scoring position. They’ve had chances.
Phil you had a good read on this plate umpire, I think he’s the worst ball and strike guy I’ve seen so far in the playoffs.
during the regular season I wouldn’t worry about it too much, but these players deserve better.
.150 .571
Pheww, getting a little intense
Talking about this game Cassidy, and Lux hasn’t played since the Padres series. Smith hit clutch homers in both the Padres and Mets series. He has driven in 7 in the postseason. Better check on what the big boys have done tonight. 0-6 with men in scoring position.
.150 .571 Smith
.185.529 Lux
Missed opportunities.
Not that opportunity!!!!
They took advantage of Treinen’s weakness – stole bases off his slow-delivery.
Does a healthy Rojas turn the double-play that Edman flubbed in the 10th?
Who knows but how can anyone question Edmans play in the playoffs
Lux slips, and can’t get to 3rd base….
Kirk Gibson, move over..
Holy shiitake
Good for Freddie he deserves every good thing that happens to him
feeling warm-fuzzies for Freddie
Cortes grooved a horrible pitch to Freeman ..So what!!
FREDDIE! FREDDIE! FREDDIE! FREDDIE! FREDDIE!
“High fly ball into right field, she is gone!
“In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.
Wonder why Boone went with Cortes over Hill…
Dodgers will take it ….an instant classic
Now do it again…
