While we are waiting for AF to acquire Francisco Lindor or Aaron Judge or whoever, I wanted to chime in on LAD player development.
First, the two players identified in the earlier discussion…Hunter Feduccia and Ryan Ward.
Of course neither would be headliners in ANY trade, but why would anyone assume that nobody is asking for Feduccia. IMO, the Dodgers are holding onto Feduccia because he is the perfect insurance for a Dodger catcher injury. Why did he get to that level? Because the development team has not been able to develop Diego Cartaya. Is that fair for Feduccia? He has two options remaining. Feduccia is 28 this year. Not exactly the age of a MLB All Star. I am guessing that he would prefer to play for another team and get a legit shot at MLB as the full time backup catcher, or for some teams, a shot at the every day job.
Ryan Ward is a 27 year old LHH DH with heavy RHH and LHH splits. This will be Ryan’s final year in the LAD organization as he will become a MiLB Free Agent 5 days following the WS, unless LAD purchases his contract at some point this season. He would be a throw in as he was not selected again in the Rule 5 draft, but I hope he gets a shot with another team. He is after all the overall AAA leader in HR in 2024.
I have included a table below for the top 10 draft picks for every year in the AF era, plus any players who reached MLB drafted after the 10th round, or are included in the latest MLB Pipeline LAD Top 30 prospects. There have been 12 players reach MLB drafted after the 10th round, and there are currently 2 players in the top 30 drafted after the 10th round.
What makes the Dodgers an envied farm system (IMO) is the number of players they put into MLB. Almost always as depth, but MLB players just the same. But elite All Stars? NO! In the 10 drafts in the AF era, there have been 3 All Stars; 2 pitchers (Walker Buehler and Tony Gonsolin) and 1 position player (Will Smith).
You can count on one hand the number of players who have had a significant impact on another team (okay 1 hand plus 1 finger):
- Dean Kremer to Baltimore in Manny Machado trade.
- Connor Wong to Boston in Mookie Betts trade.
- Luke Raley to Tampa Bay for Tanner Dodson. Raley had another good year with Seattle in 2024. As of now, Luke will be regular 1B for Seattle.
- Zach McKinstry to Chicago in Chris Martin trade. But Zach became a regular once he landed in Detroit.
- Ryan Pepiot to Tampa Bay in Tyler Glasnow trade.
- Michael Busch to Chicago for Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope.
If you look more into the drafts, you will find that LAD has been able to develop pitching, but are devoid of any everyday position player, sans 1 (Will Smith). Gavin Lux, James Outman, and Andy Pages will have another opportunity in 2025 to establish themselves as a regular, but they look to be platoon players for LAD.
There have been a couple of very good drafts and couple of forgettable drafts, but even those have some gems.
As of this writing, the Dodgers have only 2 position player prospects who are anywhere close to being MLB ready: C Dalton Rushing and SS Alex Freeland. Dalton Rushing is not going to be the LAD everyday catcher. I have no idea how far this experiment with Rushing to LF will go, but after reading the tea leaves and some reports, it appears the Dodgers want to keep him at catcher. He does have a chance at making his MLB debut this year, as he needs to be protected.
But do the Dodgers need 3 AAA catchers (Rushing, Feduccia, and Diego Cartaya)? Cartaya’s trade value has disappeared, and Feduccia could be a backup catcher at the MLB level. That leaves Rushing as the best catcher asset available for trade. It is not that I do not like Dalton Rushing. It is that he is too good to be a MiLB catcher, and that is exactly what he will be with LAD. Your best prospect is a backup catcher and a wannabe LF for AB.
Alex Freeland may be the LAD SS of the future, and then again he could be another Gavin Lux, platoon infielder, or Jacob Amaya. Freeland deserves the opportunity to showcase his talents to LAD and the other 29 teams. While he is the top SS in the LAD system, he can play 2B and 3B, but has the skill set to stick at SS. For the year (three levels), Freeland is an above-average runner and was one of just four players in MiLB with 30 or more doubles and stolen bases. His confidence is at a high level, without the cockiness. He will not let the game get too big for him. Freeland should make his debut this year, as he too needs to be protected this year.
The LAD 40 man has exactly 4 homegrown position players: Smith, Lux, Outman, and Pages. Pitchers are in bigger supply as homegrown. 11 of the 24 on the 40 man are homegrown.
- Ben Casparius
- Jack Dreyer
- Tony Gonsolin
- Michael Grove
- Edgardo Henriquez
- Landon Knack
- Dustin May
- Bobby Miller
- Emmet Sheehan
- Gavin Stone
- Justin Wrobleski
Somebody asked the question, how many MLB ready pitchers does one team NEED? Every one of the 11 have reached MLB except Jack Dreyer. The remaining 13 pitchers on the 40 man have all pitched at the MLB level. That is 23 pitchers on the 40-man who are MLB pitchers. That does not count Clayton Kershaw.
Some on the 40-man are injured this year and will not pitch: Gavin Stone, River Ryan, and Kyle Hurt. The first two are prized prospects who figure to be MLB starting pitchers, while Hurt has the ability to be a late inning high leverage reliever.
Starters this year?
- Blake Snell
- Tyler Glasnow
- Yoshinobu Yamamoto
- Shohei Ohtani (May?)
- Bobby Miller
- Tony Gonsolin
- Landon Knack
- Justin Wrobleski
- Emmet Sheehan (All Star Break)
- Ben Casparius (probably more reliever now)
- Clayton Kershaw (June/July)
- Dustin May (I have to include him because he can start. But I do not think he will).
Next year, add Gavin Stone and River Ryan. Also Jackson Ferris and maybe Jared Karros could be ready. Ferris almost assuredly. 15 SP for 2026 (May will be gone), and possibly losing only Kersh and Gonsolin for 2027? Yes they are loaded with pitching.
Certainly many of the SP could be moved to the bullpen, and will be. But the bullpen is going to be busting at the seams as well.
I do not know enough about the pitching shapes of the many pitchers’ pitches to know which would be best to retain. Pitches should come out of different slots to give opponents a different view. I will let AF/BG make those decisions without my input. They are all talented, and it will hurt to lose any of them, as it hurt to lose Ryan Pepiot, my favorite LAD pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw at the time. IMO, Tyler Glasnow was worth my loss.
It is not just the draft picks that have been wanting. International free agents have not been a source of top talent for LAD. The much ballyhooed Miguel Vargas was more of a bust for LAD. Andy Pages still has a chance to be a regular. After that? They need to reach puberty before we can properly assess them.
The rookie and A levels have multiple IFA who could make an impact. But they are teenagers, and none of them are Vlad Jr., Jackson Chourio, Elly De La Cruz…There are undoubtedly more Luis Rodriguez’s and Wilman Diaz’s in that group.
The Dodgers have missed out on some of their top draft picks. But two of the current disappointments (for me) at this time are the first two picks in the 2021 draft, Maddux Bruns and Peter Heubeck. They have been in the LAD organization for 3.5 years, and have only reached A+. I was more bullish of Heubeck than Bruns at the draft, but he too has not developed as hoped. Of course there is still time for both, but I think Bruns is going to end up in the bullpen. Then again, maybe Heubeck can be traded to get another Aneurys Zabala or Zach Neal.
While the top two picks of the 2021 draft may have been disappointments (thus far and in my opinion), that draft also produced Emmet Sheehan, Ben Casparius, Justin Wrobleski, and Nick Nastrini.
So in conclusion, the Dodgers develop pitchers exceptionally well, however they seem to lack in their development of position players. Why? I have no idea. Hopefully the next wave of prospects will be more productive. But it will be years before they are ready. Hopefully we will see some of them reach AA this year, as AA is barren of talent outside of Jackson Ferris and Jared Karros, again 2 pitchers.
Some out there will judge the LAD farm system as top because of the number of players they put into MLB. That is a fair assessment. You have to give credit to teams who actually put players in MLB. That is their job. For me, I prefer to assess them on the significant players (starters) they develop.
We all have different opinions. I do not pretend to have any special knowledge to fairly assess the talent. I am not a scout, and have never been asked to be one. I do not get paid for my “editorials”. I am just one guy who has a blog and an opinion. Such as it is.

The Dodgers have released Andre Lipcius.
Still think Lipcius deserved a call-up last season. Instead AF brought in Cavan Biggio, who I guess gets a WS ring just for being around.
My impression, btw, is that Zyhir Hope is now the Dodgers top OF prospect, while Jackson Ferris is the top LH pitching prospect. As I understand, the Dodgers had coveted both in the draft and just got beat out. Getting them for Busch and Almonte looks like a win-win.
I’d put Hope ahead of Josue DePaula because it’s clear the Hope can be a quality defender.
A few years back, no Dodger hitting prospects were hyped more than Miguel Vargas and Diego Cartaya–two IFAs. Now we know better about both. This is one reason I’m skeptical about the hype about De Paula, another IFA. It’s also a reason that I’d prefer that the Dodgers trade De Paula instead of Rushing or Hope or Ferris.
It is always a matter of fit. De Paula has a lot of DH in him, and we all know that is not something LAD needs. Hope is a legit OF prospect. He is higher on my prospect list than De Paula.
Wow. Quite a detailed read. Thank you Jeff.
Thanks for the time you must have put into this post, Jeff.
It was nice to think about some of my past favorites such as Edwin Rios, Matt Beaty, DJ Peters, Zach Pop and Zach McKinstry (at least he’s still in MLB).
Please do both of us a favor, and NEVER AGAIN mention that we skipped by Gunnar Henderson to draft Hoese. That one really hurts.
Yeah, I am sure I am obnoxious about that. But it just hurts every time I watch Henderson play.
Always mention it.
My pet theory is that AF had too much confidence in Lux, so he picked the a “third baseman of the future.”
Didn’t we also pass on the Yankees’ Aaron Volpe to take Busch and Hoese (or at least Busch)?
Thanks for this info!
Yes on Hoese, but Volpe was selected right before Busch.
Hoese #25
Volpe #30
Busch #31
Henderson #42
Henderson not taken until 42 says something about what he was showing as an 18 year old.
Geez guys. It’s an inexact science. Nobody has a crystal ball and the ability to draft without some misses. How many times did we hear Bernie Carbo’s name?
No need to act like somebody stole our crayons. Move on and keep trying to draft the best player available.
Look, the Dodgers are the best team, with the best front office, and the best development program. You gotta look for faults where you can, it’s kinda part of being a fan for some people.
striving to always improve. That’s a good sign.
These three I would like to see the dodgers Teoscar Hernandez Keke Hernandez and the closer from the Padres and then send Chris Taylor or Outman down to Oklahoma for emergency call up if any body get hurt. Because the outfield will be covered with the two Hernandez Edman and Pages Conforto. Keke is a way better hitter then outman or Chris taylor.
100% agree with your assessment….but I don’t think upper management does.
Nolan Arenado blocks trade to Asstros.
Good lad!
Lovely reading!
I wish the team was more forthcoming on Philosophy when it comes to IFAs and draft, but why would they be?
Dodger Stadium construction update. New home and visitor clubhouse under construction. Thought some might enjoy this.
Needs moar motocross
Thanks NorCal, really enjoyed that. I’ll bet those dugouts are going to be the class of the MLB
White Sox sign Andre Lipcius to a minor league deal. He will get a non roster invite to MLB Spring Training. Wow, that did not take long.
Good for Andre. Well deserved shot at MLB.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another excellent, comprehensive, informative report.
So not only did AF miss out on Gunnar Henderson, but Shane McClanahan too? Ouch. And JT Ginn didn’t even sign!
Feduccia certainly has value as a backup for the Dodgers, but I wouldn’t hesitate to put him into a deal. It just seems to me that there are always one of those AAAA catchers out there who can easily be picked up, like… what’s-his-name…. Austin Wynn? Or maybe Cartaya gets pressed into the backup role.
I expect AF to stash one or two more veterans like David Bote to stash at OKC. Maybe aging Kevin Pillar will come back and wait for another shot. There are several veteran outfielders who are still looking for work.
I see the logic in dealing Rushing. (How about Rushing + Wrobleski for Suzuki?) But I could also see Rushing, if he stays with the Dodgers, mature into a job-share at catcher with Will Smith, and also get action at 1B and LF. (Freddie should get a bit more rest.)
And I still wonder whether Rushing of Will Smith could be factors when the Dodgers need to find a successor for Muncy.
This much is certain: It won’t be Adames.
He’ll, I think Bote could make the team.
Interesting read. I think my sleeper this year is Chris Campos.
Good choice. He merits watching.
Great article with so much info, thanks Jeff for all the time and hard work you put in on this and all of your other articles.
On Dec. 18, 1958, Pee Wee Reese announced his retirement at age 40 after 16 seasons with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. Reese was acquired on July 18, 1939, in a trade with the Boston Red Sox in exchange…
I doy know how you do it Jeff,so much good information! Re intnl players here was a period where they kept trying to get a 2b player and they all washed, I remember Guerrero who they hyped and a few others. Eventually they had to trade for washed up veteran 2b players.
Re how successful our farm system I would be interested in how they compare to others, like Cleveland,Tampa Bay and Athletics for example.
And I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
Dave,
i think one of the points Jeff is making in this article is that it’s hard to compare farm systems because there are many ways they can be evaluated.
Great info Jeff. Thx. Dodger strength is depth over top end talent. Which is difficult where we draft every year.
I think maybe an easy way to compare farm systems is to count not only the number of those drafted who make the Major Leagues but how many become All Stars.
Year by year evaluations seem rather ambiguous to me. There is a lot of attention given to players at AA and below. With rare exceptions there is no way of knowing how those young players will fare in the big leagues. Obviously most will never make it there. Look at that list Jeff just put together. (Good work Jeff) Over a hundred names. How many are great players?
The Dodgers seem to be good at developing pitchers. What they aren’t very good at is keeping them healthy. Even the best we have, Kershaw, hasn’t been great since he turned 30. Before 30 he led the league in 37 different pitching categories. Since turning 30, none. And look at the current list of Dodger pitchers who are injured. Something is wrong there.
The Dodgers are a team of expensive, very good free agents. Lucky us.
I think Jeff’s point here is that the Dodgers are highly valued because of the volume of players they develop from lower drafting points.
i think the argument is that this is harder than getting an all-star from a top 3 pick.
was drafting Ruschman really a sign of a strong farm system? Was Houston tanking for high picks representing one?
Another terrific write up on the Dodgers prospects and their recent draftees. Like most professional drafts there are no certainties or consistent strategies used by most teams. There are always some big misses on top drafted players and big surprises with lower draft ones. Second guessing comes with every draft.
I think what determines success or failure is not a talent problem, but an in between the ears problem. It’s hard to become a major league player. Those that realize that raw talent isn’t the determining factor. The ones that are successful have the ability to be coachable and know that it’s a continual grind. Not only to make it in MLB, but to stay there.
Jeff, I hope you continue with your positive recovery in 2025. Thanks to you for providing us with a excellent forum to express our “always reasonable and well thought out” opinions on Dodger baseball.
Bear, thanks for doing such a nice job of filling in for Jeff when needed. Continue your recovery from surgery. It would be nice if you and Jeff can both be healthy at the same time. This tag team routine of maintaining the site needs to stop. Lol.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a healthy 2025 to you both and to the many Dodger fans who read and write here. All help make this site what it is today.
Forbes listed on their website that the Dodgers were valued at $4.8 billion last year.Guess the number now? That number has shot up to $5.5 billion. It’s a $700 million jump, exactly the numbers on Ohtani’s contract.
The Dodger outfield wall advertising revenue jumped from 500 thousand last year to 6.5 mil this year.
Cmon AF we can afford Teo at 3 and 66 mil.
And throw Scott in there as well!
But just signing Teo and Tanner Scott is too easy!
So AF could do that…. and then swing a blockbuster for Luis Robert Jr.
Just something to spice up the off-season and give some Dodger prospects a brighter future.
Anthony Santander or Teoscar Heenandez whuch would be the bettee every day in the lineup player to have for the Dodgers let’s see Anthony and Pages could be groomed to be the dodgers leftfielder and rightfielder for the next five years in the outfield. Teoscar could be the rightfieldee for the next three years and Conforto and Pages platoon in leftfield with Edman and klke the centerfielder platoon hmmm that’s a tough decision what to do both plans work.
If Teo decides to head East, I don’t think the Dodgers will pivot to Santander.
In addition to a hefty salary, Santander would also cost the Dodgers a draft pick because he turned down the QO from Orioles.
Signing Teo is the simplest solution… but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Blue Jays or Red Sox win the bidding.
Another great write up Jeff. Very informative. Thanks for this great blog and the work you and Bear do.
While waiting for the Dodgers to make whatever additions and deletions they wind up doing if any, I have had a few thoughts that I have liked for awhile and then rejected and then liked again.
I think Lux will have a good year. He came up as a shortstop and had to wait for an opening. When it came, he suffered a major injury, skipped a year, and came back as a rusty shortstop without a full off-season to prepare and a brain that worried about how his knee would react to full exertion. I am one of the very few that think he might still have some shortstop in him if he worked out there all off-season.
I was fully against trading for Arenado but I saw how hard he was working out to bounce back this off-season on MLB Network and now think he might bounce back. St Louis has said they will keep some of his salary but instead, if I let my imagination run wild, I can visualize him as a Dodger and Muncy and Taylor as Cardinals. However, that would mean Lux would have to be traded and the Dodgers would stay older. I prefer Freeland, Betts, Lux, and Freeman in the infield ASAP. But I also like Edman in the infield.
Teo kept getting better and better as 2024 progressed and he was awesome as a teammate. I would love him back for another year but not three more and certainly not four years. If there is no Teo, then hopefully Pages and Outman play a lot and do well. Putting Arenado and his righty bat at third would open the door a little more for Outman, especially if Lux were traded. Moving Lux would put Edman in the infield and put Outman, Pages, and Comforto in the outfield.
You know, I’m going to comment every time you mention trading Max so here goes, Fred.
Your imagination shows Max and CT as Cardinals, but they have stated they want to get younger and give their younger players a chance to play. How does adding Max and Taylor fit into that scenario?
I applaud Nolan for working hard this winter, but that doesn’t convince me to make him the Dodger third baseman next year (and for 2 years after that). Just about every conceivable statistic you could use shows that Max was a better player than Arenado last year. Granted, swapping the two would make us younger because Nolan is a full 1/2 year younger than Muncy.
Just let Max play out his contract this year and, if Freeland is everything we hope for, he can take over third base next season. Or, if Max is spectacular this year and Lux doesn’t have the year we both hope for, they can pick up Max’s option and have Freeland play second base next year.
I totally agree that we need to get younger. With the exception of Freeland, however, our better prospects are all a few years away. Maybe Pages and Rushing (if he isn’t traded) and Outman (if he can revert to his rookie self) can force their way into the lineup.
I’d love to see Teo back here, but there’s a nagging feeling in my brain that says I’d kinda like to see what would happen if there was no Teo and Rushing/Pages/Outman were forced to play more. I’m expecting some nice surprises from Conforto to partially make up for a missing Teo, if necessary.
And one last Christmas wish. I really hope we sign Tanner Scott which would put a cap on an already excellent bullpen. That said, I don’t expect Andrew to be high bidder and so I’m prepared to settle for Kirby Yates to replace Daniel Hudson as the grandfatherly influence out there.
May may be the one that replaces Hudson.
As for Arenado, I run cold to warm to cold. Mostly, I like his righty bat to help Rushing, Outman, and Lux get playing time.
I have more faith in Pages than Outman, but you never know. Of course, I would like Teo for 3 years. No reason why he can’t be very productive at age 35.
Michael Soroka to the Nats for a 1 year, 9 million dollar contract. He will be a starter.
If I recall correctly, Jeff, you were on the Soroka bandwagon as a low-priced fix him signing. Looks like the Nats thought he was worth 9 mil, a number which I’m guessing Andrew wasn’t going to get close to.
He was out 2 full years due to ruptured achilles (twice). He has not been an effective starter since he returned, but was a good reliever last year. He was a former 1st rounder by Atlanta. I thought he would be a good reliever in the Andrew Miller and Brandon Morrow mold. But no, not at $9MM.
Passan takes a look at the trade/free agent markets. ($$$$$)

basically, the trade and top of market pitching markets are the only ones that are not cold.
And those that are cold range from just cold to absolutely frigid.
Great job and thank you, Jeff. I don’t follow the minors much except what I read from guys like you. I now prefer to use young prospects for trade bait to land a proven star/solid contributor.
So there’s a report in DodgerNation citing a Cardinals “insider” who insists that the Dodgers are indeed interested in Arenado:
“The Dodgers have kind of downplayed their interest in him, they’ve mentioned how Max Muncy will be on the roster to start the season. Don’t be snookered by that. The Dodgers still want Nolan Arenado,” John Denton said. “They still have interest in him. But if they talk it down and act like they’re not that interested, they might be able to get out from under some of the money.”
According to Denton, Arenado declined a trade to the Houston Astros because he’s waiting on a final response from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“He doesn’t want to do something in sort of a panic move this time of year. He wants to wait and see what his best options are. I think we all know, we all understand — Nolan Arenado wants to be told ‘No’ by the Dodgers,” Denton said on ESPN Thursday.
“That’s his first choice, that’s where he still wants to go.”
Not sure what to make of that but….what if?
Could the Dodgers move Max to LF?
Not ideal, certainly, but Max isn’t as slow as he looks, and his arm is strong enough. How would he compare to Dalton Rushing, a bigger (but younger) guy who would be shifting from catcher? For that matter, how would Max compare to Teo, who did not get stellar marks for his defense.
Or perhaps Max and Arenado could platoon at 3B. Batting lefty, Max would likely get most of the starts, with Arenado entering against a southpaw reliever and as a late-inning defensive replacement.
And when Freddie needs a day or a week off, Max could shift to 1B and Arenado could cover 3B.
What if….
Shohei DH
Mookie SS
Freddie 1B
Smith C
Max LF
Arenado 3B
Lux/Rojas 2B
Outman/Pages RF
Edman CF
Bench of Barnes and Taylor, who could be a late-inning defensive replacement in LF.
Or AF just signs Teo already.
Cards would have to take Taylor or no deal. We really don’t need Arenado and that contract. The money could be better spent on the outfield and pitching.
Agree. Or an expanded deal including Heisley .
MM, CT3 plus Knack or Wrobleski plus another lower level pitcher (Bruns, Kopp) for Arenado and Heisley.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Outman would not be on the 26 man roster Conforto would be in right field
He will
if they really did that, which I’m skeptical of but the off season is for spitballing and dreaming, they could move Max back to second, a position he’s played before, and is comfortable with, then trade Lux.
Hi Guys, a little update. I am having my stitches out tomorrow. I am getting better, but I still cannot put weight on my left ankle. Just want to wish you all a Merry Christmas. I hope to be at least able to walk with a walker by then.
Merry Christmas to you Bear. Hope you have a great holiday, even with your bum ankle. At least you’re with family. Take care.
Hang in there Bear. Happy Holidays to you and yours. Thanks for all you do for this blog. Especially the history of our Dodgers and baseball. I for one am not only a fan of the Dodgers but baseball. I can only imagine what it would have been like to see The Babe, Gehrig, Cobb, Walter Johnson and Cristy Mathewson. Not to mention the Boys of Summer. The Brooklyn Dodgers from 1947 to 1957 must have been a joy to watch an be a fan of.
That was when baseball was Americas game.
Now it is football. Both college and pro. Big shift happened in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Perhaps you could do a piece on that.
Christian Walker has agreed to terms with Houston. Thank goodness he is out of the NL West. It looks like Bregman will be moving on.
That dude CRUSHES us!
I hear we’ve agreed to pay 1/2 his salary.
