I am increasingly more bemused by what AF/BG are actually going to do this offseason. After committing to nearly $1.2B last year, I was not convinced they wanted to go big again this Winter. I was also not so sure they would not. After the Ohtani and Yamamoto contracts signed last Winter, AF/BG threw out the book as to what they were most likely going to do.
The baseball pundits take a statement from both AF and BG that they will be looking for SP, and surmised that the meaning of those statements was they were looking for elite SP. They were “looking for pitching” when they signed Tyler Anderson and Andrew Heaney.
Well, the baseball pundits were right, as AF broke yet another one of his traits by signing Blake Snell to a 5 year $182MM contract (present value between $160MM and $165MM). This was the first $cott Bora$ contract longer than 1 year that AF ever successfully negotiated. Although the AAV was just about where most thought it would be.
I do think AF/BG is looking for one more starter. IMO, I do not know if that will be an mid to top of the rotation pitcher or back end.
None of the LHSP who MIGHT be available matches the pedigree of Garrett Crochet. I do not know what that cost will be, but I am sure the Dodgers can put together a package that can help both teams. I do not know who all was involved in the 2024 deadline proposal, but if it fell apart because the Dodgers were not willing to include Dalton Rushing, they might have missed out. I like to think that the addition of Rushing made the offer too much of an overpay at the time, and there was not enough time to make it work. They had to pivot quickly for Jack Flaherty.
Crochet is 3 years younger than Flaherty and 4 years younger than Buehler. He will be far less expensive than either Flaherty or Buehler. Someone commented that they did not want Crochet because he is a sub .500 pitcher. Is it really that shocking that a pitcher for the worst W-L team in the history of MLB had a sub .500 W-L record? 2024 was the first year Crochet was a SP and he pitched 146.0 innings, more than any LAD pitcher other than Flaherty. His ERA last year was 3.58 but with a 2.69 FIP, xERA 2.83, SIERA 2.53, his peripherals were much better. His K/9 was a very impressive 12.9, but his SO/W ratio was a more impressive 6.33. Those numbers are all comparable and slightly better in multiple metrics than Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, and Blake Snell. The rotation could be Yamamoto, Snell, Glasnow, Crochet, Ohtani and Miller.
But if AF/BG are still truly in on Crochet, they will not be alone. Philadelphia is very much involved in the discussions. They are reportedly willing to package Alec Bohm and CF prospect Justin Crawford for Crochet. That is a better package than Lux and Rushing. But do the Phillies really need another pitcher? I guess everyone does.
Maybe AF/BG is more comfortable with back of the rotation options: Michael Lorenzen or Jose Quintana. Give the young guns more time to percolate.
Would the Padres be willing to include C Ethan Salas or SS Leodalis De Vries in a trade? The problem is that the Padres do not have a MLB position player available who is not on a long term contract except Jackson Merrill, and he is not going anywhere. Jake Cronenworth will cost SD nearly $11.5MM AAV through 2030. That is a non-starter for CWS.
NYY and NYM could be players, but it does behoove CWS to wait until the Soto sweepstakes is complete. I am not sure Atlanta has the prospects to entice Chris Getz, and neither Orlando Arcia nor Jarred Kelenic is going to move the needle.
So, if the Dodgers want Crochet, they can put a more competitive offer together than any other team. I am just not sure that is the route they want to go with the bevy of MLB ready pitchers they have in their stable.
Then I read this from Miggy Ro:
“Knowing that Mookie is going to be back, it makes me happy. It makes me excited to keep working with him and to keep going at it with Mookie at short and second base, because I know how better he got when the time was there.”
When I read this, I got the impression that SS is not out of the question for Mookie. Miggy does not need to work with Mookie at 2B, although it certainly would not hurt. His tutelage is for SS (IMO). If Lux is not included in a trade, he is probably back at 2B for LAD. Thus, as long as Lux remains with the Dodgers, Mookie Betts will be the SS.
Now that Tommy Baseball (move over Donnie Baseball) has been extended, the guessing game for where he plays is in full force. Apparently sportswriters are split as to whether Edman is a SS or CF or both.
We will know more of the “plan” once we learn whether the Dodgers acquire a LF, CF, and/or SS. For CF and SS, IMO, it would have to be via a trade or internal. There is not a difference making free agent CF or SS.
For LF, do the Dodgers want to give Teoscar Hernández a third (or fourth) year? Both Boston and NYY are very bullish on Teo. The problem is, if not Teo, then who? No, it is not going to be Juan Soto. If they are not willing to give the extra year to Teo, I cannot see them offering it to Anthony Santander with a QO attached. Yes he is younger and a switch hitter, but he did not help Baltimore the way Teo did for the WS Champions. Tyler O’Neill? Jesse Winker? Michael Conforto? Harrison Bader? Max Kepler?
I know there are a lot of Dalton Rushing fans out there, and they do not want to see him traded. I understand wanting the LAD prospects to move up to MLB with LAD. But like Lux if Mookie plays 2B, there is no position for Rushing as long as Will Smith is there. He is not a LF. He is playing there to get more ABs in AAA. But does that play out in MLB?
Rushing does not have to be protected this year, so he will probably start back in OKC. But will it be as a catcher, or more as a LF/1B/DH? I do believe he is a MLB player, but just not with the Dodgers. IMO, his best value right now probably comes in a trade. Or would you rather see him wither on the vine like Ryan Ward and Diego Cartaya?
Luis Robert Jr. is not going to be traded this winter without a significant overpay. CWS wants position players for Crochet. Why would they trade their best position player without that significant overpay? Can the Dodgers offer one? Absolutely, but AF is probably not going to.
I would be all in for Kyle Tucker, even as a rental. But if Alex Bregman goes elsewhere, Houston needs to extend Tucker.
What other OF has both the offensive and defensive chops as does Tucker, Mookie, Judge, Julio Rodriguez? None of Steven Kwan, Ian Happ, or Colton Cowser are going to be traded. One does come to mind, Boston’s CF Jarren Duran. Is that a possibility? Boston is not saying no to him being available. But certainly improbable.
There are offensive juggernauts like Soto, Santander, and Nick Castellanos who struggle defensively, and there are defensive stalwarts like Jake Meyers, Brenton Doyle, and Jacob Young who struggle with the bats.
Byron Buxton would fit the criteria if he could only stay on the field. He played in 102 games in 2024 which was the most since 2017. Only two years > 100 games.
But maybe, just maybe, AF/BG believe in James Outman more than most fans. He would not be the first player who bombed and then came back to have a good career. We have no idea how his wife’s pregnancy could have influenced his season. His pressing at the plate, along with the pregnancy, could have put him on an emotional roller coaster. Once she delivered and the baby came home, James became a different hitter. For the month of September, in 84 PA (75 AB), Outman slashed .360/.429/.693/1.122, with 4 HR, 12 XBH, 9 BB, 18 K (21.4%) Rushing for the month of September slashed .230/.338/.459/.797, with 4 HR, 6 XBH 9 BB, 1 HBP, 15 K (21.1%). Outman is also a better runner and defender. I would go with Outman over Rushing in the OF.
IMO, Outman deserves a 2nd chance. He is that player who is capable of producing both offensively and defensively. Will he? That is why they play the games.
Do the Dodgers believe that Alex Freeland is the LAD future SS? How long will they have to wait for Joendry Vargas, Emil Morales, or Kellon Lindsey to emerge? I mentioned earlier in the week some SS who might be available. I thought that Willy Adames was more likely going to play in SF, and he is the only needle moving SS in free agency.
Although not likely, Cincinnati’s Matt McLain could be available. Also not likely, but possible is Washington’s C.J. Abrams. Does anyone believe that Seattle’ J.P. Crawford is due for a bounceback year? What is the likelihood that the Dodgers could convince Arizona to trade Jordan Lawler or Geraldo Perdomo to them?
I am sure Boston would love to trade Trevor Story and his 3 years, $72.5MM contract. I doubt that the Dodgers feel the same about acquiring Story.
There are just too many “what if” scenarios to know where AF/BG are leaning. The Dodgers could go in a dozen or more directions, including doing nothing else. We sit and wait.
Well written Jeff. And it all makes sense to me…. except for one thing – Mookie to short.
I do not like that idea. Oh I’m pretty sure he could do it, but I’m on record saying put him at second, leave him there, and get a shortstop to play shortstop. Now that could be a platoon between Rojas and Edman, which might mean a platoon in center as well. I do see Edman in utility role and maybe that’s how they get him 500 at bats. But, honestly, I’m not crazy about that idea either.
I don’t which way to go with this if Adames and Robert Jr aren’t coming here. But, Edman at short and Outman in center solves the problem. Is that a Championship lineup? It can be if the pitching improves.
I agree. Put Mookie at 2B and leave him there.
Not sure it’s of any major importance, but Adames has reverse splits. He’s terrible at hitting LHP.
I agree with this also Betts at 2B less demanding than short. Really like the idea of Duran but after the Mookie trade not to sure Boston is willing to trade with AF again. Sign Teoscar, Trienen and a back end starter like Quintana. I think Sasaki is headed for San Diego unfortunately
Last year they were bad but in previous years there wasn’t that big of a distinction. In 2023 he hit lefties better than righties. I’d love to have him here but not very confident it’s going to happen.
Me three.
So bat Adames lower against lefties, and give Rojas the occasional start.
I do not expect Mookie to SS and I am not advocating it. I just thought it odd that Miggy said he can’t wait to help him, and that he was getting better the more they worked together, so I will not be surprised. I still think Lux’s biggest value to LAD is in a trade package. I am more than fine with Miggy Ro at SS and Edman in CF. Taylor can step in for either. I am slso okay with Edman at SS and Outman in CF, with Miggy in reserve at SS/2B and Taylor in reserve at CF/3B.
Outside of Teo and Treinen, I am not sure what free agent AF/BG will be interested in. I keep reading about fans wanting the Dodgers to sign Buehler because of his Octobers. Last year, Buehler was automatic for 10 IP. Is that enough for a multi-year deal? I am not so sure the Dodgers believe so. Yamamoto was good in October after his first game. Snell has been a pretty good October pitcher. I am guessing that Ohtani could be. I like the thought of Kershaw/Glasnow as the #4. And Crochet in the pen.
I do not think AF is as concerned about October as certain fans might be.
Now it is what player might be available via trade, and who does AF/BG covet most in their prospects. It would take a lot to put some into the trade equation, but for me, my only untouchables are Jackson Ferris, River Ryan, and Gavin Stone. Ferris because he is going to get a shot this year, and should be in the rotation in 2026. Ryan and Stone because there is toooooo much unknown about their health. If healthy, they are both top of the rotation type pitchers.
I realize I’m getting way ahead of myself here, but……………………………
if the 2026 starters are Snell, Glasnow, Ohtani, Yamamoto, Ferris, Ryan and Stone (that’s already 7 for a 6 man staff), where is there room for Sasaki and/or Crochet?
We always talk about the fact that pitchers get injured, but top of the rotation starters want to know that the minute they are healthy, they’re starting.
All of this makes me think AF will not be trading for Crochet. He certainly won’t trade for him to keep him in the bullpen. Cost would be way too high and Crochet would have a fit.
Maybe they already know they aren’t getting Sasaki either. Or Ferris, Ryan and/or Stone will be used to get a shortstop or outfielder in trade.
And now for my analysis of the 2027 off season…………….never mind, I think I’ll wait a couple of days for that. First, I need to hear from Bluto as to why my thought process is silly. Any of you other guys feel free to let me know where I’ve gone wrong.
I think if he can get Crochet he is going to get him.
Excellent point.
And your list of ’26 starters omits a big name: Shohei.
Doh! Ohtani is in there.
Will Gonsolin and May be free agents by then?
May is a free agent after this season and Gonsolin has 2 years..
Gracias.
Sure hope these guys can stay healthy.
How many innings will these guys pitch next year?
Combined for all pitchers mentioned has been estimated at 435. As has been proven over And over again, 74.89% of all stats are made up on the spot.
Crochet at $2.9M in 2025 and Arb 3 for 2026 screams trade for me. The Dodgers can trade one of their Aces down the road at which time the return for that Ace can be compared with the assets they gave up for Crochet. Trading for Crochet has more likelihood than Muncy being traded away. The former is me being more serious than the me that trades Muncy every off-season.
I realize you weren’t advocating a move to short by Mookie, just reporting what was said.
I have no untouchables with this group as I don’t see a Kershaw or a Seager, or anyone close to that, anywhere in the organization. I’m fine with moving any of them in right trade.
And I too am ok with Rojas at short, and he will need a lot of time off so Taylor and Edman can do time there as well. I just wonder if AF is ok with that.
My interest in Buehler is partly sentimental. He’s been a Dodger a long time, and regained his prominence with his postseason play. He does remind me of Hershiser a bit.
Unlike most in the rotation, Buehler represents continuity.
But I’d still want him on a short-term, “prove it” deal that could lead to a longer commitment.
The Dodgers now have Snell, Glasnow, Shohei and Yamamoto locked up for at least the next four-five years, some much longer. We may not get Sasaki, but if we do, a short-term deal seems unlikely. Miller, Knack, Frasso and Sheehan won’t be eligible for free agency for a while, and neither will the injured Stone and Ryan, as well as rising prospects Ferris, Wrobleski, Caparius and others.
Nice article.
As the great William Goldman opined about a different industry than Dodger fandom, it is applicable:
Nobody knows anything.
Heading to California on Monday. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
We’ll leave the light on for you Bear
Thanks Keith.
Been to California once in my life Bear.I flew with some of my best friends to the world series in 89. I got home and turned on the TV to the game and the earthquake was shaking. We had been traveling on the same expressway that lots of people lost their lives. I can’t go into the details of our trip. But it was an experience for some Mississippi college boys..
There are 2 things Outman needs to do to become the Dodgers opening day center fielder.
1. Not get traded
2. Repeat his 2023 spring training performance
One way the Dodgers could get younger would be to keep Lux at 2nd and pit Betts at third.
If Muncy is so good then he has trade value.
No, Betts is not going to 3B. And which of Lux or Outman is going to put up Muncy’s OPS of .858 (last year) or .826 (career)?
You have a better chance of Royce Lewis coming to LAD than the Dodgers trading Muncy. Even in his partial 2024, Muncy put up a 3.0 bWAR which more than justifies his $12MM salary.
Now you’ve gone and ruined Fred’s whole weekend, maybe his whole off-season.
If you refuse to move Mookie to 3B, Jeff, we could have my 10 year old grandson play there. He has a great arm. And then we’d be about 24 years younger at that position.
Or try Joc at 3b
I’m sure he could catch every line drive hit right at him.
Et tu, Brute?
Bobby, I like Joc. However, your relentless prodding at me leads me to believe that you haven’t given yourself the chance to break free from the confines of the raisin capital of the world.
Haha, messing with you. I also like Joc and I’m still pissed the Trashtros cost him a World Series MVP in 2017.
Blue, some people collect stamps as a hobby. I think I remember you saying your hobby was collecting Hummels. My hobby in the MLB off-season is trying to trade Muncy. To each our own.
Nope, never collected Hummels, but I do know what they are. Haven’t ever collected Hummers either (an even more expensive hobby).
My hobby in the MLB off-season is watching for your Muncy trade posts and then Bobby’s Joc responses.
It keeps me quite busy.
In the beating of a dead horse category, I am, for the first time, having thoughts of bringing Belli back to play center (or right if we don’t get Teo back). Not really sure why this makes any sense to me since I have long thought that we made the right move by letting him go.
My trades for Muncy has people questioning my sanity and now with you saying yes to Belli, well, thanks for distracting others from my Muncy trades.
What are friends for?
But I didn’t actually say yes to Belli. I was just thinking more positively about it than before.
Whereas Andrew usually has me make the final decision on all player moves, this year we’ve decided to let him do it.
Given Muncy’s stats and salary it would seem like the player the Dodgers got in return would be a little better than the one you left out of your response. Or were you saying Royce Lewis could be that player if other Dodgers were added to the trade?
Blake Snell is officially a Dodger as of today. He is on the 40-man roster. Glad to see Edman extended. USC game was hard to watch.
The Dodgers with the current roster would be just fine if they additionally bring in Treinen, Tanner Scott, Teo and (hopefully) Sasaki.
Soto would be nice but is not a must have. Same for Robert jun. or Crochet.
Can still make some deadline trades if necessary.
A 6 men rotation of Glasnow, Snell, Yama, Shohei, Gonsolin, Miller with (in no particular order) Wrobleski, May, Knack,Sheehan, Nr.22,Casparius, Ferris providing depth is excellent.Bullpen would be great too with Treinen, Scott, Vesia, Banda, Phillpps, Kopech as the high leverage arms (with Graterol hopefully back in the 2nd half).
Lineup:
Ohtani, DH
Betts, 2b
FF, 1b
Teo, LF
,Muncy, 3b
Smith, c
Edman, ss
Pages, RF
Outman, CF
Bench:Rojas, Barnes, CT3, Rushing
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The closest thing to a “must have,” I think, is Teo.
It would be a shame to lose him. He’s such a great fit on this team, every which way.
I I agree. What the heck are we waiting on.Sign the man.Every day that goes by I feel like other teams gain a better chance to sign him.If we lose him,it will upset a huge amount of fans, myself included of course.
I wonder what Friedman would say looking at that lineup with Pages and Outman coming up right before Ohtani.
Hmm, depends on what version of Outman we will get next season. The one who finished 3rd in ROY voting in 2023 ? I think AF would be really happy with that.
And Pages had a very respectable rookie campaign this season.
Who would you rather see there ? Smith ?
MOF I would bat Ohtani cleanup in 2025 and move Betts back to leadoff. Ohtani very likely will not be doing a lot of running and base stealing anyway when he returns to ptiching. And Mookies numbers in the leadoff spot are better than Ohtanis in some categories anyway.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right. Outman’s OPS in ’23 was about .350. That would be pretty darn good for a “second leadoff” guy.
But of course he wasn’t still on base after he knocked himself in 23 times.
He’d be having a little talk with Doc.
Put Rojas at SS, Edman in CF, and Outman or Pages on the Bench, I don’t want to see an OF with Pages and Outman in it at the same time, please.
Yes, the White Sox GM says he wants position players for Crochet.
But he never said he won’t also consider quality pitchers because (a) he’ll need to replace Crochet in the rotation and (b) the woeful White Sox need help in EVERY aspect of the game.
I am one of those fans that want to keep Rushing. But we just don’t know how good (or not good) he’d be at the next level, so including him for a quality talent like Crochet or Robert could make sense.
Would a package of Lux, Rushing, Wrobleski (or Knack) and Feduccia (or Gauthier) work? They’d get a starting 2B, the young power bat the covet, a new young lefty (or righty) with ML experience, and a backup catcher–possibly Rushing’s backup–or a UT prospect.
Of course the Dodgers really don’t need another SP, especially if Sasaki decides to wear pantone. But I think as a matter of roster management, not mention sheer fun, it makes sense to swing a blockbuster now and then.
Shake things up a bit. How much fun is it to just dangle a fat contract in front of a free agent? Wasn’t it more fun to work a three-team deal to land Edman and Kopech?
Good take Duke.
I think on paper it’s probably true the Dodgers don’t need another pitcher, but after going through what they did this year it wouldn’t surprise me if they got another one. In fact I expect it. I also expect Teo to be back. He’s a Dodger now. He belongs here.
And I still want Adames. Until he signs somewhere else I will continue wanting him.
I love this:
Yes, the White Sox GM says he wants position players for Crochet.
But he never said he won’t also consider quality pitchers because (a) he’ll need to replace Crochet in the rotation and (b) the woeful White Sox need help in EVERY aspect of the game.
The GM said he wanted positions players, if he wanted pitchers as well why wouldn’t he just say “We’re looking for quality, period.” or “We’re looking for position players and pitchers”
The GM also didn’t say he won’t also consider injured players! Maybe we can trade Frasso! Nor did he say he won’t also consider overpaid utility players, who may possibly be good in the clubhouse! Frasso and CT3?
Eh, my post above sucks. Really sucks.
If Jeff is online, I’d appreciate if he could delete it and this one.
Looks like you’re stuck with it, Bluto.
My criticism is directed toward everyone who gloms on to a soundbite and reads too much into it.
I keep seeing proposals for Crochet that exclusively list position players. But it’s just nuts to think the White Sox wouldn’t want at least on pitcher back when they trade their very best.
‘ppreciate the response and apologize for the antagonistic tone of my silly response.
Dodger SS prospect, Jose Fernandez was suspended for the 2025 season for PED use.
I agree that the 2026 pitching list looks full. That’s why I think they could get a backend starter who will become expendable, like Paxton. I also do not see much risk in using Outman and or Rushing. There is so much firepower in the lineup and the pitching is so good. Albeit defense is important, Outman is good and I really can’t speak to Rushing’s defense but how bad could it be? Teo wasn’t considered a good defender either. I say play him or trade him.
Hey Dave. How about Kershaw for the back half of 2025? If Kershaw is very successful he will probably retire after the 2025 season. Especially of the Dodgers win the World Series. With him having a chance to really contribute to a WS winning team I would think that could be a perfect way to end a HOF career!
I totally agree!
Kershaw will be back in the first half of the season and will be really good. Reading a lot of blogs, people have put him out to pasture. My biggest hope going into the new season is Kershaw starting game one with a shutout and win the clinching game five. He’s a legend and we need to enjoy his talent because he’s on the back nine of his career, possibly on hole 18. Our grandkids will be arguing whether or not some new pitcher is as good as Koufax and Kershaw.
Funny, but Kershaw is an afterthought when I ponder whether the Dodgers should add another pitcher. And I sometimes forget that Sheehan will help after the AS break.
I was hot for Crochet before the Dodgers locked up Snell for five years. Now not so much.
And the Dodgers still seem likely to get Sasaki too. So I don’t worry much about pitching now.
As for position players, there’s some room for improvement.
In the FA market, both Teo and Adames can have serious impact. Santander and O’Neil could be decent fallbacks for Teo, but I don’t see Kim as an upgrade over Edman.
As for the trade market, would an aging, pricey, seemingly fading Arenado be an upgrade over the aging Max? Doubtful.
Last season, Arenado hit to a .719 OPS, with only 16 HRs in 152 games. Meanwhile, Max slugged to a .852 OPS with 15 homers in only 73 games–basically his usual 35 HR pace. If Max had been healthy enough to play a full season, he might have won a Silver Slugger–and his defense improved, too.
So in the trade market, I keep coming around to the potential impact of adding Luis Robert.
I was just reading on mlb.com that Rushing is showing “adequate” skills in LF–and the article also also noted that Teo was actually pretty weak on defense.
If the Dodgers sign Teo but not Adames, the OF mix could include Teo, Rushing, Outman, Pages and Taylor–assuming that Edman handles SS. Teo would play every day, and the others might be mixed-and-matched against pitchers. I’d be happy with that group sorting things out.
But flipping Rushing + either Outman or Pages + ??? in a deal for Luis Robert could be epic.
Guys come here and learn how to pitch, then move on with a big contract elsewhere. So talking about Anderson and Heaney–They had one good year with LA , but sucked before they came here and after they left
What a thorough article Jeff! How is your rehab coming along?
There are lots of possibilities available to AF/BG to consider. At this point in the offseason everyone’s thoughts and opinions are as good as another. The front office always seems to pull off an unexpected signing or trade each off season.
Maybe, the signing of Snell was that surprise. Or, do they have something else that we haven’t covered?
Right now I would like to see the following:
Sign Sasaki – low cost. Eliminates the need to trade for Crochet and thus saving prospects to trade for:
AAA, MLB ready SS prospect or a McClain type already in MLB
If unable to trade for a SS then:
Edman SS
Outman CF
Mookie 2B
Trade Lux for the above SS prospect, pitching prospects, or international money.
Sign Teoscar – 3 three years $75-$85M
Sign Treinen – two years at ????
Starting pitching to begin 2025:
Yamamoto
Sasaki
Glasnow
Snell
Gonsolin
Miller
Add Ohtani in May to replace Gonsolin or an injured starter
Add Kersahw in July. I’m sure that an injured starter will need to be replaced. If no injured pitcher, by some miracle, then I don’t know where he fits in.
Note: I would like to see May as a permanent BP member. A BP of May, Treinen, Vesia, Banda, Kopech, Casparius, and Phillips is strong. There are other possibilities in the minors for depth. If Graterol returns later in the season then there’s another piece that could be available.
It’s already been a positive offseason. I’m curious to see what else might be in the works.
Carry on.
Always find your comments interesting, Ted.
A couple of thoughts:
1) You mention adding Ohtani to replace Gonsolin, but I’m expecting more out of Catman in 2026 than I am Miller. So, if it’s OK with you, I’ll replace Miller. 😎
2) You say we should consider trading Lux for some Intl bonus money. As far as I know, you can only trade for up to $250K in any one trade and you can’t wind up with more than your original pool allotment. In the Dodgers (and Giants) case for the period starting Jan 15, that’s $5.146MM and if they haven’t used any yet they can’t trade for more until they do.
3) The Padres are said to be our main competitors for Sasaki and their pool allotment for the period starting in Jan. is $6.261MM, so about 1 mil extra. Our best outcome would be for him to be posted prior to Dec.15 and then quickly decide to sign with L.A. before the end of that signing period on Dec. 15th.
Just hoping that Sasaki is reportedly on a private plane headed to San Diego with a reservation for 10 at a local sushi restaurant in late January.
That kind of report does tend to work out well for us doesn’t it.
Agree, interesting post Ted. A lot to think about there.
Question Jefe, isn’t it Sasaki’s decision where he goes? And if he wants to play in LA, would 1 million make a difference to him?
Yes, it is.
And, no, it won’t.
When I spoke about a best scenario, it was because there aren’t many teams with money left for the current period. We are one of them. Didn’t make my point clearly enough.
Best case scenario is that he wants to play for the Dodgers.
Well Sasaki is giving up a lot of $ in his 25-29 years by posting now, so $ isn’t his primary concern. Got to believe he wants to win championships and no place better than LA.
He’ll earn more money in endorsements by posting now. If he stars in the USA, he’ll be that much bigger in Japan.
I’ve always rooted for Outman to get more opportunity. His last month at OKC was encouraging. He’s always been streaky.
In his rookie season, he got off to a fast start and, with Max, carried offense for the first month of the season. When he slumped, the Dodgers allowed him to work out his issues on the big league level–and he did. And he always shown first-rate defense.
His rookie season showed Outman’s power against righties (with 22 HRs) while he was a singles hitter against lefties. His OBP was in the healthy .350 range on both sides. On most teams, he’d be a full-time player. But on the Dodgers he makes sense as a platoon option with Pages, who kills lefties.
I hope Teo returns. With or without Teo, I think an overpay for Luis Robert Jr. may pay off big. He’s just a huge talent with proven 40 HR power and Gold Glove potential in CF. And at 27, he’d make the Dodgers younger.
Yes, he may be injury-prone, but the Dodgers conditioning program and role models like Mookie could help.
With Snell, Yamamoto, Glasnow and Shohei all locked up for the next five years–and plenty of young pitching talent in the wings–a deal for Robert makes more sense than adding Crochet.
A few trades become more likely if the Dodgers sign Sasaki. Maybe both Miller and Knack could go plus Lux and Rushing.
Here we go again! Looks like St. Louis is trying to trade Nolan Arenado. Word is the Yankees and, you guessed it, the Dodgers are the favorites. To add to the intrigue is Arenado has posted a picture on Instagram of himself on vacation playing Kendrick Lamar’s song “Dodger Blue”. Just wishful thinking on his part. If it was 2 or 3 years ago I’d say there would be a chance, but he’ll be 34 in April; too old to waste players for. Besides Mookie would have to go to SS and Muncy to 2B to make it work. Not gonna happen in my opinion.
brooklyn, I saw that also, but it didn’t make any sense from the dodgers point of view, plus I didn’t want to post it, and give Fred another scenario to make another Max trade 😀
you know he’s going to be all over this tomorrow when he sees your post.
I don’t want to trade Max that badly.
Do we know who said the Dodgers were one of the favorites to get Arenado? Consider the source. Seems totally contrary to what AF is trying to do now. Why add another fairly expensive older player on the downhill slope of his career?
In other free agent news, the Mets have signed Frankie Montas, 2 years/34 mil, with an opt out after the first year. Boras hasn’t lost his touch. That seems like a pretty dramatic overpay to me.
STB hope you’re good and enjoyed Thanksgiving with your family.
This is what they are referring to

Once upon a time I would have loved to read this as Arenado is probably my favourite non Dodger (we signed Freddie who was my other) and the best 3B of this generation, as well as being from LA!
Unfortunately he is definitely on a downward trajectory, especially with his bat.
Can’t see this one happening.
The priority as I see it is locking down Blake Treinen. He was the unsung hero of the Post Season.
I think they are just trying to get Teo to sign a shorter deal. They will find some middle ground.
He seems like a guy who would forgo a few dollars to play where he loves. He was the heart beat of that season.
I guess it’s possible that Arenado could be obtained fairly cheaply as I’m sure SL would like to get of the remaining $74m and three years as they’re not close to contending.
We have Max for another year, but I’m not sure AF extends him given his age, declining production and defence at a premium position.
Maybe 3 years of Arenado, who is still an average hitter and way above average defensively at the Hot Corner makes some sense, especially with no obvious 3B in the system. He is also hits right handed.
Could trade Max while he has a little value. Overall it would definitely be an upgrade and sorts 3B for this “window” of win now Baseball that the Snell signing seems to signal.
BTW, that really is a statement signing. I’ve always thought that you should always add from a position of strength. Snell makes us much stronger, especially in the Post Season, and that’s why I want Blake back.
It seems to me that AF has modified his approach somewhat – the whole season is now geared towards peaking in October and having enough Starting Pitching to do so.
What a time to be a Dodger fan!
Watford, you mentioned trading Muncy. Stop it. That’s my thing. You can have Taylor.
Would be great to trade Taylor. But he has no or negative trade value. I keep hoping the Dodgers can find a mutual bad contract trade for Taylor. Taylor and a prospect for Bellinger??
Ohio-I wonder if the Cubs would trade Bellinger for Lux and Taylor. Seems like it would work for both teams.
With Mookie moving back to 2B, I would do that trade. I think the Cubs would be very interested. And then sign Kike and Teo.
Thanks for the link Watford. My money is still on NA not coming here.
Had a very nice Thanksgiving including our annual T Day email from our close friends who live in Stone. We always leave a couple of seats at the table for them but they haven’t made it yet. Maybe next yr.
Arenado is younger than Muncy. Arenado projects a higher WAR than Muncy. I like Max, but he’s an oblique waiting to happen. Personally I would like to see Arenado in Dodger Blue. I bet he would love to play here. Will it happen? Probably not.
Looking at all the rumors flying around what is the most likely thing to happen? Obviously I don’t know, but maybe it’s already happened. The Dodgers made a splash with Snell. Is there another splash on its way? I believe there is. Edman cannot start in center and shortstop. Is Edman in center and Rojas at short really what Friedman plans? I don’t think so. A move to solidify up the middle is what I believe is most likely to happen.
The Dodgers were quick to sign Snell 😊
(one for DodgerRam)
I read it on mlb.com which was citing Randy miller from WFAN out of NY. Since it wasn’t one of the big names in mlb I didn’t give it much thought.
Good article this morning on ESPN.com re. Willy Adames. I did not know he was so respected and liked by teammates.
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/42622206/mlb-offseason-2024-25-free-agency-willy-adames-shortstop
Not surprised. Sounds like he’s Teo at shortstop. And he’s the guy I’ve wanted there since we didn’t sign Lindor.
I’m still hoping for Adames also, but with all of the interested team, I’m starting to feel it might be an uphill battle
For Adames, it is going to be what $$$ AF/Guggenheim feel comfortable with (No s*** Captain Obvious). I no longer have a feel for what that dollar level is. Ohtani, Yamamoto, Glasnow, and Snell did not fit the pre-Ohtani mold. Now we have to learn how far will they go in the post-Ohtani signing mold. They have a budget. We are just never going to learn what that budget is. And I guess they do not give a rat’s a** what the other owners feel. Nor should they.
They (AF/BG) said they wanted a franchise SS for the long term, and that was one of their 2025 goals. Adames made the most sense, although I did like the Snell signing…a lot. SFG fans are spitting bullets at me these days. Too bad, so sad.
Maybe sign Adames with the same deal as Snell. Then again, maybe the Dodgers do not want to pony up another large signing bonus. And maybe Adames does not want all that deferred $$$. Or maybe they do not want to lose draft picks and IFA bonus $$$. They are difficult to read right now.
IMO, most agents are waiting for Soto to sign, and then let those teams that do not sign him have their $$$ gravitate to their clients. So far only four top 50 free agents have signed, and all four are $cott Bora$ clients: Blake Snell (Dodgers), Sean Manaea (NYM), Yusei Kikuchi (LAA), Matthew Boyd (Cubs). All four are also LHP.
$$. $cott Bora$.
Adames is 29 and coming off 3 years of 3 and 4+ fWAR. He’s still got a couple years of prime left, but his 4+ years are likely behind him. I suspect he can still put up 3 WAR for 3 years, making $25 mil per year for those 3 years worth offering. In negotiations the fact he costs a draft pick will be argued but Bora$ will have no part of that. He will also have no part of 3 years. I figure 5 years at an AAV of $25 million is generous. That said, with teams bidding on his services somebody will likely offer more.
Your projection falls in line with the “experts”.
MLBTR – $160MM – 6 years
Athletic – $150MM – 6 years
Spotrac (Market Value) – $175MM – 7 years
Singing the Blue. I just read your response to my post from yesterday. I appreciate the kind words.
No problem keeping Gonsolin in the rotation instead of Miller. I’ve been a big fan of Gonsolin and was sorry to see him have injury issues in 2023-24. I guess it comes down to who is producing at the time.
Your international money explanation was something I wasn’t aware of. The rule makes sense. So, the trade with Lux or others for a mere $250K in additional monies is not a good return. Like someone else mentioned, Sasaki’s decision won’t be based on money considering a delay of a couple of years would have had him signing for hundreds of millions more than he will receive with his signing in 2025.
It’s amazing the wealth of information shared by so many. LADC is a great place for any Dodger fan. Thanks for the lesson STB!
Agreed Ted . Miller vs Catman to be decided based on results.
Glad to fill in some blanks with those rules but I’m not going to pretend I didn’t have to google a couple of things before posting.
Thank goodness for the Google machine at this point of my life. Eliminates a lot of frustration. I appreciate you taking the time to do so.
Rosenthal has a lot of Dodger stuff in today’s piece:
($$$$$)

Basically waiting to see if they can get Soto at a value or team friendly deal (Harper’s pitch is mentioned)
Not really mentioned on Adames.
Good info on why Buehler:
A. Didn’t get a QO
B. May be more likely to sign elsewhere.
Reports are Soto will decide sometime in hHe next 10 days.
