The one-hit win. It does not happen often. ESPN had a reporter to a story on that in 2014. Between 1914 and 2014, it happened just 64 times. Interestingly enough it happened twice for the Dodgers in one season against the same opponent, the Cubs. On May 15th of 1965, Dick Ellsworth had a no-hitter going against the Dodgers into the 8th inning. In the bottom of the 8th. Torborg reached on an error by Ron Santo. Tracewski bunted and was safe on a fielder’s choice. John Kennedy moved both runners up with another sacrifice. Al Ferrara, pinch hitting for Bob Miller then slugged a three-run homer that would win the game, 3-1. It was the Dodgers only hit. Miller got the win and Jim Brewer shut the Cubs down in the 9th for the save.
Later that year, again at Dodger Stadium, Sandy Koufax and Bob Hendley both had hitless games going into the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Dodgers would score without the benefit of a hit. Johnson walked. Fairly laid down a sac bunt that Hendley bobbled leaving his only play at first. Johnson then stole third and the catcher, Chris Krug, threw the ball wildly and Johnson scored. Johnson would get the games only hit in the seventh when he hit a bloop fly behind the second baseman, Glen Beckert. By the time Ernie Banks reached the ball, Johnson was on second. Fairly grounded out to end the inning. Koufax kept his perfecto going and won 1-0.
The Giants in 2010 lost two games in which the opposition had just 1 hit. The first one was to the Padres and Mat Latos, the run scored on a hit, stolen base, a foul pop on which the runner advanced, and a sac-fly. In September, they lost to Kershaw and the Dodgers, 1-0 when the run scored on a hit batter, two walks and an error. The only Dodger hit, a single by Matt Kemp had nothing to do with the outcome. Barry Zito lost to Kersh who threw one of his 25 career complete games.
MiLB GAME SUMMARIES
Tacoma Rainiers (Seattle) 5 – OKC Comets 2
This was not a good game for the LAD rehab players. The Dodgers were hoping for a 5.0 innings out of Tony Gonsolin. Instead they 4.0 less than effective innings. While he may have struck out 5, he allowed 3 hits on 6 hits and 1 walk. He threw 66 pitches, 43 pitches.
A second LAD pitcher on a rehab assignment also had a forgettable night. Evan Phillips pitched 1.0 inning (19 pitches/16 strikes). He allowed 2 runs on 3 hits. He did strike out 2. Too much of the plate for both pitchers?
The three relievers finished off the final 4.0 scoreless innings, They had a combined 3 hits and 2 BB.
The Comets scored 2 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits, 1 BB, and 1 error. The big hit was Kody Hoese’s 2-run triple (1). 3 OKC hitters had 8 of the 9 hits.
- Hunter Feduccia – 3-4, 1 run
- Kody Hoese – 3-4, 2 RBI
- Dalton Rushing – 2-3, 1 BB
Tulsa Drillers 3 – Wichita Wind Surge (Minnesota) 0
Peter Heubeck started for Tulsa and was ejected from the game after the top of the fourth inning. Following a lengthy inspection, umpires ejected Heubeck for suspicion of a foreign substance.
Heubeck was very effective while in the game. In his 4.0 scoreless IP he threw 60 pitches, 34 for strikes. He allowed 1 hit with 3 BB, to go with 8 strikeouts. Was it a foreign substance?
Kelvin Bautista, Lucas Wepf, and Christian Suarez pitched the final five scoreless innings to preserve the 5-hit shutout. This was Tulsa’s 2nd win of the young season, and 2nd shutout. 4 hits, 3 BB, and 2 K.
With 2 outs in the 5th, Taylor Young singled. He moved to 2nd on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on John Rhodes’ single. Damon Keith followed Rhodes and reached 1st on an error, and Rhodes came all the way around to score.
In the 7th, Chris Newell singled. He moved to 2nd on a ground out and scored on another John Rhodes RBI single.
- John Rhodes – 2-3, 1 BB, 1 run, 2 RBI
- Chris Newell – 2-4, 1 run, double (2)
- Griffin Lockwood Powell – double (3)
Dayton Dragons (Reds) 10 – Great Lakes Loons 2
Great Lakes opened the scoring in the 2nd. Kole Myers stroked a one out single to RF and scored on Nelson Quiroz’s third double of the season for a 1-0 lead.
Dayton tied the game in the 3rd, and broke it open with 7 in the 4th off LHP Luke Fox and RHP Noah Ruen.
Down 10-1 in the 7th, Logan Wagner (5) and Zyhir Hope (4) hit back to back doubles to score their 2nd and final run. Zyhir Hope had his 5th multi hit game in the first ten games of the season.
The first four pitchers for the Loons allowed 7 hits and 10 walks to score their 10 runs. Each of the pitchers each allowed at least one run. The Dragons had a double, a triple, and 2 home runs. The big home run was a grand slam by 22 year old LF Anthony Stephan (1).
The final pitcher for Great Lakes was 2B, Wilman Diaz. He did give up 2 hits and a BB, but no runs were scored.
- Logan Wagner – 2-4, 1 BB, 1 run, double (5)
- Zyhir Hope – 2-5, 1 RBI, double (4)
- Nelson Quiroz – 2-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 2 doubles (4)
Chris Campos will get the start for the Drillers on the Wednesday day game.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 4 – San Jose Giants (San Francisco) 3
Today, the 5-4 Quakes started a 6-game series against the 6-3 San Jose Giants.
RC OF Samuel Munoz had a three-hit day including a single for the walkoff win in the 10th, as the Quakes won Game 1 of the series, and stayed perfect at home.
Munoz smashed a Ryan Slater offering down the first-base line to lead off the tenth inning, scoring Mike Sirota, who opened the inning at second base. The win for the Quakes is their second straight overall and keeps them a perfect 4-0 at home.
Munoz drove in the game’s first run too, as he singled home Kellon Lindsey in the first inning, as the Quakes tied the game at 1-1. Lindsey drew a BB, moved to 2nd on a WP and scored on the Munoz single.
Rancho took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. With one out, Jaron Elkins singled, and moved to 3rd on a Eduardo Quintero single. Elkins scored on the front end of a Elkins/Quintero double steal. Quintero scored on a Mike Sirota double (3).
San Jose scored a run in each of the 6th and 7th innings to tie the score.
In the tenth, Logan Tabeling stranded the inherited runner at third base, tossing a scoreless frame. With Munoz’s walkoff, Tabeling earned his first win of the year.
Quakes’ starter, 19 year old Samuel Sanchez (#28 LAD prospect) was strong in his first home start of the year, allowing just one run on six hits over 4.2 innings, striking out six along the way.
The Quakes will send RHP Hyun-Seok Jang to the hill on Wednesday.
- Samuel Munoz – 3-5, 2 RBI
- Kellon Lindsey – 2-4, 1 BB, 1 run
- Mike Sirota – 2-4. 1 HBP, 1 run, 1 RBI, double (3)
- Jose Meza – 1-3, 1 HBP, double (1)
Born June 14th, 1948, in Los Angeles California. AKA The Bear

Dodgers are now 17-4 on Jackie Robinson Day.
I watched 42 again. Chadwick Boseman nailed Jackie and Lucas Black was excellent as Pee Wee. I thought Harrison Ford was also excellent as Branch Rickey.
RIP Chadwick Boseman.
He also nailed a couple of other icons: James Brown and the fictional T’Challa from “Black Panther.”
Good game. Nice to see Taylor showing signs of life.
At least he was making contact with the ball. Edman had one helluva game too. Chris drove in 2 runs but only got credit for one. Team still leaving too many men on base. They were 4-12 with RISP< but they still left 12 on base. This game should have been a blow-out. Bought one of the Jackie Robinson day caps. Pretty cool with the B on the front. Bobby Miller being called up to pitch tomorrow.
A lot of opportunities for a blowout, but 6 runs is a good night. Ohtani and Betts 0 for 9 is… unusual. Knack was ok, bullpen was nails. Pages and Taylor with hits is a hopefully a good sign.
I had a B hat a few tears ago. Gave it to friend in Sedona who was from Brooklyn. He was thrilled.
Jackie Robinson Day. So much could be said about it but it’s too sensitive a topic. Take a look at Dylan Hernandez’s column in the Times this morning if you have a chance. I think he’s spot on.
It was cool seeing the Dodgers wearing the Brooklyn caps. I have a Brooklyn cap that I got autographed by Ralph Branca at Vero Beach. One of my cooler Dodgers keepsakes.
I have a couple of Brooklyn caps, or at least I will when the Robinson gets here. I bought the Cooperstown 1953 cap a few years ago. I used to have a 1938 cap; the same type of cap Babe Ruth wore when he was a Dodger coach. White with thin blue pinstripes and a blue bill. The Freeman bobblehead from the other day is selling on Ebay for well over 100 dollars. Way too much for a bobblehead. Most expensive one I have is a Hank Aaron my brother paid 75 dollars for. I do have a Koufax that is worth quite a bit if I auctioned it.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/EIAAAOSwN8VleVZd/s-l1600.webp
Those 1938 caps are really cool.
I would buy one.

I have one. I like low profile hats and I could only get this one in a high profile. I know, I’m nit picking
I am with you on the low profile.
Yes, they are. And very hard to find new. I have seen them on Ebay used.
One hit wins? Remember when the Dodgers won a game vs the Angels with no hits! Good pitching by Chad Billingsley shutout the Angels and we scored on a couple of errors,a stolen base and a sac fly.
Buehler won the battle of ex Dodger pitchers last night with Pepiot and Lux had himself a 4-4 night. If only Busch was a center fielder! Bellinger and Seager off to rough starts. Rooting for our ex Dodgers
I’m fine with Lux having some success. The rest of them? ….. not so much.
We picked up a game last night. Yay! Two to go.
Cool and gray here the last few days. It’s not right when Ewjean is warmer than we are. I got a friend up there in Duckville. He lets me know when his weather beats mine.
Do we have a Major League pitcher ready to go tonight? What minor leaguers will be up against the Cubs in Chicago and why are we playing them so much? Also depth is an illusion. Heck, the mystics tell us it’s all an illusion, but, maybe that’s a topic for another blog.
Depends on whether you consider Miller a major league pitcher or not.
I don’t.
Just checking.
+1
Ferris + Hope > Busch
Not yet
A definite maybe.
I watched that game on TV.
How about zero-hit wins?
My 15-year-old, the crafty southpaw with the sub-1.00 ERA, was on a short spring break holiday. So were four key teammates–and all missed Sunday’s games.
But his team, the Eagles, mustered just enough players to take on an Orioles team they usually dominated.
After one inning, the score was 0-0. Four different Eagle pitchers would pitch in the second inning.
Walk. Error. Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. STRIKE OUT! STRIKE OUT! Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. STRIKE OUT!
Eleven runs would walk across that inning.
The final score would be Angels 11, Eagles 2.
The Eagles finished with three hits, and the Angels had none.
Fortunately, I did not witness this debacle.
My son told me that his teammates blamed it all on the dirty, rotten. biased umpires.
Orioles vs Eagles? Sounds like a mismatch.
Reminds me of a couple lasting visuals I have. I lived on two different lakes in Wisconsin and on one there were bald eagles nesting on either side of the inlet my property was on. One morning I was sitting out on my deck watching ducks land on the other side, maybe 60 yards away. An eagle was sitting on a branch above the water just watching the ducks. The group cruised under him and the eagle jumped off the branch, fell 15’ into the water, grabbed a duck and flew off with it. Eagle 1, Duck nothing.
The other memory, same eagle (I think) same branch (he had a great view of the water from there, hunted fish mostly) and a robin landed on the branch right next to the eagle. They looked at each other briefly then the eagle just snatched that robin in his mouth and took off. It was funny to watch but kinda sad for the smaller bird. Eagles are bad ass hunters and I really enjoyed sitting out there and watching them flying around doing their thing. Amazing critters.
ok, back to baseball. One hit wins. Koufax vs Gibson. Behind home plate. Zero zero game, Tommy Davis hits a home run in the bottom of the 9th, Dodgers win. Place goes wild. What a memory.
I often go fishing at a small lake about 50 miles from where I live. I was up there one day when I saw an eagle flying about 6 feet above the lake. He stayed low for a bit then skimmed the water and had his prize, a rainbow trout. They are so majestic to watch. We have a lot of them in the area.
I bet you do.
NW Wisconsin is an outdoorsman’s wonderland. Lakes, rivers, woodlands. 50 pound Muskies, 100 pound sturgeon. 10 pound walleye You ever heard of the siscowet lake trout? Look it up. Huge, good fighters, but not particularly good eating. So I’m told. Gotta smoke ‘em.
My friend and drummer who passed away recently had a smoker. We used it quite often. I am giving the eulogy at the celebration of his life this Saturday, and it is supposed to snow here then.
That is an honor Bear,I know you will do him a great service. My mother passed away six weeks ago.We were together every day.I miss her terribly.Thank God I have my wife father and kids, because I am still in mourning.
Mosquitoes too
Yep. Mosquitos too. State bird in Minnesota, but they’re bigger and there’s more of them in Wisconsin.
Eagles are amazing…
We’ll have an Eagles vs Eagles match in Singapore in a few weeks. The Singapore American School has a strong team. Our Eagles will be underdogs in that one.
And didn’t the Dodgers only muster one hit in Koufax’s perfect game?
Who had Heubeck as a cheat on their game card?
Tyler Glasnow is on the latest The Windup podcast from The Athletic
really great conversation which touches on:

Kershaw was awesome today at OKC.
It would be so cool to see Kersh go out healthy and productive with another WS title
Tho fastball was only in 88 mph range
Heard a lot of people say “it ain’t how hard you throw it, it’s where you throw it.” Another 5 MPH would be nice but throwing strikes is something the parent club isn’t doing.
Hope he comes out tomorrow feeling good.
High and tight, low and away, slider. Repeat. Got him.
3 innings, 2 hits, no walks and 2 Ks. He is in a 30-day rehab window.
Supposedly he threw 4 splitters today. It will be interesting to see if he can pickup that pitch to add to his arsenal.
Also, Outman 2 run home run, Freeland 2 doubles.
Bear- Loved your article, you do a great job. Something I noticed that you don’t see now is sacrifice bunts and hitting behind runners. That’s old school don’t want to give away outs. I realize that hind vision is 20/20 but last night when Taylor came up with the bases loaded and no one out, I was hoping to see him bunt. Taylor is an excellent bunter and the bottom of our lineup is not producing. Sometimes one needs to manufacture runs and when a certain part of the order isn’t getting it done maybe a different approach by the part of the lineup would be appropriate. Taylor’s at bat produced a run but at the expense of two outs. We had a great opportunity to have a big inning. With Colorado playing back they were conceding the run for a double play, they got what they wanted.
Reading your article batters such as Ron Fairly, if I recall correctly, I was young, hit in the middle of the lineup, but yet he was bunting. I’m not even remotely suggesting that our first five or six look to play small ball but if your hitting under.220 maybe mixing up a little bit would be a good deal.
Finally, I wonder how much teams spend defending the bunt. I’m sure in spring training it’s gone over in detail, but with no one bunting now, I wonder how well a defense would handle it. Just wish Taylor would have bunted in that situation.
Bear thanks for your hard work and yours and Jeff’s serious dedication to this site.
Thanks John, I recently did a post on Fairly, the teams other red head. Fairly had 96 career sacrifice hits in his career, 68 of them while a Dodger. Career record for sacrifices as a Dodger belongs to Jake Daubert, 237. LA record is 132 by Bill Russell. Funny, never thought Tommy’s team did that much. 12 players have more than 100. Two LA Dodger pitchers on the list, Sutton, 127 and Kershaw, 110.
We signed the right closer this off season. Williams really struggling with Yankees

No love for the Angels?
Shocking.
Williams was not a free agent; he was traded by the Brewers to the Yankees for Nestor Cortes and a minor leaguer.
You folks remember when the Dodgers won getting no hits? I remember watching it on TV: https://www.mlb.com/cut4/the-dodgers-won-with-no-hits-in-2008-c282802370
Oops — I see below someone else covered this 🙂
Getting tired of chris taylor and max Muncy swinging like eveey swing needs ti be a homerun how about bit juts try to get base huts right now and then the Homer’s will come. Hey wouldn’t like a Trent Grishom from the Yankees be good for the Dodgers centeefield and move edman to secondbase full time wouldn’t they want taylor and Muncy they must have a thridbaswman some where how the dodgers don’t is mind blowing.
I really can’t disagree with this
NO
Chris Taylor drove in 2 of the Dodgers 5 runs last night. He hasn’t played enough to evaluate for this season, his BA is higher than Conforto, Kike, Barnes, Rojas, and Muncy. Cannot argue about Max’s performance so far, but what you need to understand Bradley is that Max has a very team friendly contract, and his track record is always a lot of strikeouts, some OK defense and a ton of power with a high OPS, which in today’s game is more important than his batting average. They have played 19 games. Grisham is an excellent fielder, with a so so bat. He does not hit left-handed pitching at all. So, the Yankees sit him against lefties. Max Muncy is not as bad of a third baseman as you might think. He has bad games, everyone does. But he is there for his bat, he is a known quality. The Dodgers will be patient with him even if the fans are not. Edman would be great at second base, but for now, this EARLY in the season, they are not going to make any drastic changes. You can complain all you want as are many other fans, but it isn’t going to make any difference. Outman was gone after 37 games last year. They will give Pages at least that many. They have never in the Freidman era traded a major position player before the All-Star break. And rarely if ever have they made deals of any significance before the deadline. You have to understand the history.
Muncy has four career homers against tonight’s Rockies starter, Marquez.
I would guess Dave Roberts was none too happy with Freeman last night. The Dodgers do not want their star to reinjure his ankle while trying to steal bases. Freddie was thrown out in his only attempt last night.
Not a high IQ play by Freddie.
It’s still very early, of course, but I have a feeling that the midseason trade market will be interesting.
Finally the volcano erupts!
Will Bobby Miller ever figure it out? Wow!
Bobby Miller’s trade value is negative now.
So is Robert Jr,’s. Make a deal.
Okay, I’m in. Because I want to see Outman get a fresh start, I am fine with Outman and Miller and Maddux Bruns for Robert Jr. Who says no.
The White Sox.
Agreed. Three nickels for a quarter.
Guys…sarcasm.
I too would like to see Outman get a fresh start somewhere else.
Not technically true given his contract status.
Whose contract status? Miller’s? Again, a bit of sarcasm. But just what do you think Miller brings to LAD in a trade after last year and this year, including his AAA time.
Apparently, AF/BG do not agree with many here as to what is fair value for Luis Robert Jr. I guess some of you are willing to include Josue De Paula, or Zyhir Hope, or Kellon Lindsey, or Jackson Ferris, or River Ryan to get Luis Robert Jr. for less than a year. Robert Jr. is not worth $15MM this year, much less another $20MM next year, plus 110% tax.
Bottom of the line up got the job done tonight. 5 of the 8 runs knocked in by Muncy, Pages and Barnes. 10 Ks by the hitters again, but the pitchers struck out 16 Rockies. Miller was great, for 2 innings.
Clean sweep by the affiliates tonight.
That’s entertainment.
It was an entertaining game, had I known the Comets game was on early, I would have watched Kersh pitch. It took Tulsa 14 innings to win their game.
5-game road trip to Texas and Chicago. Rangers are in first place in the AL West. Cubs also in first in NL Central. LA has 3 days off in the next week. Tomorrow, Monday, and next Thursday before they come home for Pittsburgh, and Miami. Then they go on the road for 10 games with Atlanta, Miami and then four in Arizona. Braves activated Spencer Strider today. They are going to face deGrom, Eovaldi and Mahle this weekend in Texas.
