Pick A Player!

Someone came up with this idea, and I thought it was pretty cool. I will list my favorite players by their numbers, and then you can do the same. You can pick both Brooklyn and LA, or just stick with 1 player per number.

            1. Pee Wee. Only remember Auerbach wearing it in LA.

            2. Lasorda. Durocher is a Hall of Famer, but he spent too much time with other organizations.

            3. Willie Davis-LA, Billy Cox-Brooklyn. One of the best glove men ever.

            4. Duke. LA and Brooklyn

             5. Freddie Freeman. Lavagetto-Brk.

             6. Furillo-Brk. Garvey LA.

             7. Yeager LA, Reiser Brk.

Well what a crappy 8th inning

Jeff

Why the FO continues to bat Ohtani at leadoff defies any baseball history I’m aware of. He checks one box amazingly well, speed. With a guy like Mookie as a starter, how can you not have Mookie leadoff? We saw an amazing 1-2 punch last season with Mookie and Freddie. Why not change back to this and have Ohtani bat 3rd? His HRs will have more RBIs attached to them and create more of an impact on the game. I’m convinced AF is a lazy thinker and very slow to change anything he institutes. He is just hoping we survive while the pitching staff gets healthier and our competition doesn’t catch up with us.

Yamamoto looked very good last night and should have won that game, but alas! I could feel Chicago just waiting for the pitching change to tee off against us. They have a very decent hitting team. He will definitely be ready for the playoffs. Flaherty, Yamamoto, and Stone, seem to be assured of seeing the post season. We’ll see about Glasnow and how his time off has helped him.

Bluto

Speed is no longer a factor in deciding lineup places.
Neither are RBIs.

Neither has for a decade.

Michael Norris

Not the point. His career stats are much better in the 2-hole and it is the only spot in the lineup that his OPS is over 1.000. RBIs are not a factor? Ludacris. Runs are how you win games. RBI men are important. Last year LA had four with more than 100. This year only Ohtani and Hernandez have a shot. Career stats show Mookie is best leading off. They should heed that.

Bluto

What’s the sample size of Ohtani in the leadoff spot?

RBIs are luck and situation based.

They convey almost no information about the skill of a batter.

Michael Norris

And he has sucked in those situations this year. He was 1-21 until he got that hit tonight. That was in his last 21 ABs with RISP Carrer numbers Batting first: .268/.365/.580 in 521 ABs, OPS .945. 42 HRs 90 RBIs. Batting second: .287/.389/.618, in 1158 Abs OPS 1.008. 95 HR’s 209 RBIs. Betts leading off: .296/.376/.537. in 4365 at bats OPS .913. 228 homers, 657 RBIs, 50 of those home runs leading off games. Batting second: .309/.387/.515. in 466 at bats. 19 homers 72 driven in. OPS .902. Sorry, the stats say they should be hitting in the opposite of what they are. Here is a big one for you, Betts is a .334 hitter with runners in scoring position in his career. Ohtani .287.

Bluto

This is EXACTLY my point.

RBIs are useless. Is anyone going to say Ohtani is not the best hitter in MLB?

No.

He’s batting first because, among other reasons I’m sure, the team wants him to get the most ABs.

Jeff

Well, what are they waiting for?

Bluto

Such a stupid inning.

dodgerram

That run vs Yamamoto should have been unearned too. Would have been 4 errors in the game.
Another blown save for the Dodgers bullpen albeit with a huge portion of the blame to the “defense”.
Agree on Ohtani. He has to stop swinging for the fences every pitch.

Positives: Yamamoto was great. Graterol while giving up hard contact is back.
I still say give Henriquez a look. Can not have enough big arms for the postseason.
Especially with Banda now being out with a broken pitching hand.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dodgerram

We will see about Henriquez. IMHO it would be a big mistake to not give him a look.
Grove and Honeywell will be next in line to get off the roster when Glasnow comes back.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dodgerram

Hmm, remember Francisco Rodriguez with the Angels back then ?

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael Norris

Yes, I do, but that was the Angels. Angels were a wild card team, they had nothing to lose bringing the kid up. Dodgers do not have the same philosophy the 2002 Angels had. Very seldom does a rookie pitcher, especially one that young, 20, make an impact in the post-season. Even Valenzuela in his rookie year pitched the entire season. Isolated case, not going to happen in LA. Dodgers want experience, it is that simple. I doubt Pages makes the post season roster.

dodgerram

Said it before and will say it again: How much more experience does this roster need ? They are mostly beyond 30 years up and down the roster. The only younger guys Lux, Pages on the hitting side. Same with the pitching. Yamamoto and Miller and Knack at mid 20 being the youngest.
And it is not that the Dodgers bullpen could not use a fresh, young arm with 104 mph stuff and a sharp bender.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

OhioDodger

Wow, what a fiasco. Very encouraging outing by Yamamoto.

dodgerram

Yamamoto should get 2-3 more starts, should be enough to built him up to full strength.
Now need Glasnow and we are ready to roll into postseson play.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OhioDodger

Yep. Yamamoto, Glasnow, Flaherty would be a good starting 3 for the playoffs.

Badger

I’ll pick Koufax. If we had him we win that game.

Oh wait. No we wouldn’t have. 4 unearned. Actually 5.

It’s fun for me to watch good defense. I don’t see it with this team. On occasion maybe, but not night after night. That’s not who we are.

Slug or risk losing. THAT’S who we are.

SandyAmoros

Yep and the slug hasnt been there in playoffs

Badger

‘19? ‘20? That was years ago.

The problem last year, as I saw it anyway, is Betts and Freeman were 1 for 20. In the playoffs you gotta hit.

This team is put together to hit AND pitch. Unfortunately the pitching has been injured. And Betts was down for quite a while. Now it’s Teo that is missing. But in games like last night, when the defense does what it too often does, the team just has to hit. Ohtani 0 for 4, Freeman 0 for 4, Betts 1 for 4. That’s 1 for 12 from the top of the lineup. The team was 0 for 3 WRISP. 3 at bats with runners in scoring position? That is weak. And 4 unearned runs? That is inexcusable. 3 solos only looks good if you play good defense. The Dodgers didn’t. They were sloppy. Sloppy baseball loses games.

This is now mid September. This team needs tighten up. They know it. If they don’t, it will be like it’s been since 2020.

and Freeman one hit was an infield single

Badger

Totally wrong? According to BR last year in 96 at bats they slugged .250. Now maybe .250 slugging is ok for some but it sucks begonias in my opinion. And I can tell you this with certainty, if they do that again this year the same thing will happen.

Come on Bear, I know you and I know you’re smarter than that.

Michael Norris

The last two years, absolutely. But he said playoffs, and that is not always the case. They have outslugged teams several times since this regime took over. That is my point. He made a blanket statement. And it is not true.

Badger

Ok

Need to hang up pillows in dugout and clubhouse for guys to punch

I don’t get Anthony Banda. You’re a journeyman pitcher your whole career and never have had any success. In 2024 the Dodgers sign you ( I have not idea why), get you to be an effective bullpen piece, and now depend on you to be an important part of team in the middle of a pennant race. So, you have a poor outing and decide to punch a wall (or whatever) not with your glove hand, but with your pitching hand. Sir, you are a dumb shit! How can you be depended on for the postseason? What a selfish and thoughtless act on your part. I mean what are you thinking? You’re a 31 year old man who has been given a golden opportunity by the Dodgers and this is how you say thanks to them and the fans.

Again, you are a dumb shit. Thanks for trying. Now go away. There are hundreds of other pitchers who would love the opportunity that was given to you. The Dodgers and the fans deserve better.

OhioDodger

Dodgers should not be obligated to pay him for this missed time.

tedraymond

I agree, but that is not going to happen. The player’s union will make sure of that.

dodgerram

Gonsolin looked very good in his first rehab start for OKC.
2 IP, no runs, 2h, 0 BBs, 2 Ks.
Might be an option for some long relief !?

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tedraymond

This would be a awesome addition if, in fact, Gonsolin is healthy and ready to pitch. It would be perfect for long relief from the BP. Especially if Banda is unavailable or released. Thanks for the update dodgerram!

OhioDodger

I agree with you that Taylor and Barnes will be back next year.

dodgerram

I would like the Dodgers to go after Adames to fill the ss hole and provide a big RH bat.
Would also like them to make a move for Tanner Scott. Him and Kopech would be a great 1-2 punch to close down games.
Would like Rushing to take over backup C and play some occasional LF.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael Norris

Tanner Scott would be a great addition. Get Henriquez some work next year too. Rushing? Not sure if they consider him a catcher. If they did, he would be catching full time in AAA. But Cartaya and Feduccia are carrying that load. I believe Cartaya is quickly becoming trade bait. He is nowhere near as advanced as Ruiz was.

dodgerram

Rushing CAN catch. That is the important thing. Smith will catch 120 games anyway so Rushing would have to be at C only about 40 games PLUS he could play some LF and provide a good LH bat off the bench.
From a roster construction point that is a dream scenario.

At some point the sentimental attachment to Barnes has to stop interfering for the bigger interest of the team.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bluto

Yeah, not sure how many more years they can have 4 Catchers on the 40.

Dodgerrick

Otani, like Buehler, is recovering from his 2nd UCL surgery and like Buehler, his successful return is no sure thing

Badger

If anyone can do it it’s him. They would be smart to limit his starts and pitch count to start the year.

And as for who else might be coming and going this winter, I’ll reserve discussion on that topic for this winter. I will say this at this time, CF and SS. Figure it out.

Wally Moonshot

Ohtani in center when not on the mound? Is that crazy?

Badger

In my opinion, yes

I would keep Rojas at SS, move Mookie to CF, put Pages in RF with a possible platoon with Outman/Rushing. Bring back Teo. I would be shocked if Barnes and Taylor are not back.

Michael Norris

Rojas will be 36 next season. He is getting a little long in the tooth to be an everyday SS. Betts could play center, but it is not one of his favorite positions. He is totally comfortable in right. Hernandez has had a solid year, but I doubt they re-sign him. He is most likely going to get a 5-year deal for somewhere over 150 million. He still strikes out way too much. Outman is a fan machine too.

Dodgerrick

I suspect that Rojas, Barnes and Taylor will return next season. Rojas has a team option as does Barnes and Taylor is still under contract. Kershaw has a player option. Barnes and Rojas are cheap signings and provide what the Dodgers want. Taylor has escalators if he’s traded and he gets a $2Mil kicker if he’s traded as well.

Free agents in 2025 include Teoscar Hernandez, Jack Flaherty, Kevin Kiermeier, Blake Treinen, Walker Buehler, Joe Kelly, Kike Hernandez, Daniel Hudson. Keirmeier has already said he’s retiring.

I suspect Kike is gone – he’s the same guy as Taylor and at this point, Edman is probably better. I wonder if Hudson or Treinen will retire. Hudson is 37 1/2 and Treinen is 36 and both have had lots of injuries. Joe Kelly is also 36 and he just needs to be gone. I suspect Buehler is also gone.

I wonder if they will try to resign Teo though.

Phil Jones

Well, to be Captain Obvious, tonight is a huge start for Bobby Miller for 2 very important reasons. One, getting swept at home by the Cubs, before heading to Atlanta, is a big deal. And for Bobby himself, he really needs to start turning his season around. This could be his Swan song, and should be if he sucks again.
He has suffered from the same problem that plaques Walker Buehler, but more so.
He can’t command the strike zone. Something else in his arsenal needs to work to make his change up effective. He has to reduce the amount of homers that he gives up, with is almost 3 homers per 9 innings and reduce his walks, 4.5 walks per 9. Walks and homers are a bad combo not to mention opponents hitting .292 / .937 against him.
Color me crazy for not being optimistic on this one.
I’ve been a proponent of keeping Andy Pages around to pinch hit vs LHP. With Teo out, Pages has been in the outfield more than I’d like. But my enthusiasm is waning, as he hasn’t hit much the last 2 weeks and he makes a lot of mistakes. I know he’s a rookie but he’s been around baseball long enough to not make stupid mistakes as often as he does. He’s just not a smart, savvy player.
I hope Teoscar is back in the line up.
On a brighter note, I have really enjoyed the Cubs broadcasts of the last 2 games. Boog Sciambi rubs some the wrong way, but I enjoy him. He’s partnered with Ryan Dempster, who has the refreshing style of not talking constantly. Together, they are a very pleasant and entertaining team. They are respectful and knowledgeable about the Dodgers and are not flagrant homers.
I haven’t watched the Dodger’s broadcast in a while now. As long as Jess Mendoza is on the mic, I’m out.

SandyAmoros

Bear
I don’t think I have ever posted anything on this site you have not criticized. A difference of opinion is one thing but last I checked you are not God. Despite your harping to the contrary, you actually know, no more than any other poster. Perhaps I should have said slug has not been there lately in the playoffs. Would that statement still be totally false?

Michael Norris

Not one bit. I apologize if I offended you. Not my intention. But it was a blanket statement. Yes, the last couple of years slug has not been there. Actually, their slugging percentage during the season is down this year believe it or not. The team is slugging .437, last year it was .457. Their overall OPS is lower too. I do not consider myself better than anyone on here, sometimes, not you because I have never seen you post that kind of thing, someone will suggest something that for the most part, this particular regime does not seem to do. I base most of what I say opinion wise on what I have seen AF and company do since he took charge. The game was a lot simpler years ago. They use so many different stats now, and that has changed how many watch the game. I do apologize. You are entitled to your opinion, and I respect that. You are a passionate fan, and like so many of us, it really bothers us when the team does not perform well.

Thnx Bear I appreciare you response Go Dodgers

Therealten

I am glad u said that about pages. Getting picked off, his sliding , and general nonchalance is costing us. How about the dumb play by Muncy on the Edman throw. It looked like he was just not alert. The dumb stuff that kike does all the time. How about smith not throwing to first on the strike 3. How about Barnes, does he lead the league in catcher interference? And is physical but in recent days Barnes can’t make a simple throw to first. He can’t seem to throw the ball to second in the air. He has made 2 errors just throwing to a 6’5 target. Our catching is getting very weak. Neither one can hit and one can’t block while the other can’t throw. Last night was an elementary performance. I don’t care how many games we have won we have just underachieved this year. Blame it on injury etc but we have lacked urgency, and haven’t been particularly good in pitching, offense, or defense. That may come together yet. We are certainly due a hot streak.

Badger

Oh brother.

Once again, it ain’t Miller time.

Cassidy

Didn’t think there was anyone who could have a worst first inning than Miller

Michael Norris

Uh, I think the Cub starter would disagree with you. 4 homers, 3 back-to-back to back. 6 hits, 5 runs. Nelson’s Miller-Busch pun was weak.

Cassidy

Uh, that’s what I meant

Bluto

Roberts was really on point wrt Miller. He basically said that Miller’s FB is NOT a swing and miss pitch, no matter how much Miller thinks it is.

The sooner Miller changes his approach (and thus his sequencing) the better.

Cassidy

Hard to believe 99 isn’t but it isn’t! Lets see if Miller can hold this lead

Last edited 2 months ago by Cassidy
Badger

It may not be up to him.

Jeff

True dat. You can see Miller collapsing steadily after 4 innings. He doesn’t have the command and control that is needed to be a genuine starter in the playoffs. Way too many HRs given up and very hittable stuff. Next up?

Michael Norris

Remember the fallen, never forget 9-11-2001. RIP

Michael Norris

Manny Gonzalez, the home plate umpire is awful.

Michael Norris

Hey, they scored a run in a late inning. Whoopee. Nice AB Luxie. Shohei needs to quit swinging for the fences. This is basically a must win game.

Freeman, Betts and Teo, 2-13 combined, but how about Edman, second 2 homer game in a row.

Watford Dodger

AF did some great work at the Deadline without giving up too much.

Flaherty, Edman and Kopech improved this team massively.

No Miller, no Buehler and no Kershaw in the Playoffs please.

Lets hope Stone can come back and pitch where he left off, if not I’m definitely using Knack as my #4 as opposed to any of the above.

Just need Glasnow now…..
