Dodger Baseball

Possible Playoff Opponents?

If the season was over today, the Dodgers would have to play in the Wild Card series against the Mets. LA is currently the #3 seed, and the Mets are #6.  San Diego would have to travel to Chicago to play the Cubs who are currently the #4 seed. The winner of that series would have to play the Brewers in the NLDS.  The Mets-Dodgers winner would have to play Philadelphia. The Dodgers have a series with the Phillies starting on Monday, the 15th. They are 1-2 against them so far this year. They lost the season series to the Mets, 3-4. LA is also not very good on the road, 34-38, very un-Dodger like. They were 2-2 against the Mets in Dodger Stadium.

The road to the World Series is not as smooth as the team might like. What they need is an extended winning streak. Finishing off a sweep of the Rockies would be a good start, but they have to play better baseball against the Giants in San Francisco this weekend. The Giants are playing for their playoff lives. They are 7-3 over their last 10 picking up 3 games on the Dodgers and the Padres who went 4-6. SF is now 7.5 games back of LA, and just 2.5 games out of the Wild Card. They are chasing the Mets. Little chance they catch San Diego since they are 5.5 games back of the Padres, so their incentive to beat LA is right there for all to see. So far, LA is 4-2 against SF this year. They are 2-1 against them in LA and 2-1 against them in SF.

One thing that is happening is that the Wild Card is very muddled right now. The Mets are in the middle of a slump. They have lost six in a row, and their schedule is not being kind to them. They are 3-7 over their last 10 games and their lead in the Wild Card race is down to just 2 over the Reds and Giants, and the D-Backs are making a push too, just 3.5 back. LA’s series with them will be important.

Of course, as we all know, a team’s fortunes can change just like that. The Dodgers are getting excellent starting pitching, with Max, Tommy and Kim all back now, the offense should be better. The one worry is the lingering soreness in Smith’s right hand. It caused him to miss Wednesday night’s game. I honestly believe LA would not have too much trouble beating the Met since the series would be played at Dodger Stadium where they are a much better team.

If they defeat the Mets, they then have a 5 game LDS against the Phillies. The Phillies are excellent at home, 26 games over .500. They are also 2-1 against the Dodgers so far this year. The Phillies have a very good pitching staff. They now also have a lock-down closer in Duran. LA has a slight advantage power wise, but the Phillies have some very good hitters of their own and Schwarber leads the NL in homers, 50 and RBI’s, 123. They also steal more bases than the Dodgers do. LA is going to have to play flawless baseball to win a series with the Phillies.

MiLB GAME SUMMARY REPORTS

OKC Comets 5 – Sacramento River Cats (San Francisco) 1

Noah Miller and Ryan Ward each hit three-run home runs to guide the Oklahoma City Comets to an 8-2 win against the Sacramento River Cats Friday night.

The River Cats took the first lead of the night in the second inning on a two-run home run by Tyler Fitzgerald.

The Comets answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good on a three-run homer by Miller out to left field.

The Comets added five runs in the fifth inning. Ward connected on a three-run home run out to right field for a 6-2 lead. CJ Alexander and Miller went on to hit RBI singles later in the inning for an 8-2 OKC advantage.

Comets pitchers Landon Knack, Garrett McDaniels, and Kyle Hurt held the River Cats scoreless over the final seven innings and scoreless in eight of nine innings overall.  Knack started and completed 6.0 innings.  He allowed the two-run HR, one unearned run.  He gave up 5 hits, walked just 1 and struck out 6.  McDaniels pitched a perfect 7th with 2 Ks.  Hurt pitched 2 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits, and zero BB.  He struck out 2.

Ryan Ward hit his league-leading 33rd home run of the season — tying his 2024 total with the Comets and tying for the third-most home runs in a single season by a Comets player during the Bricktown era (since 1998). The total is also tied for the most homers by a player in the Minors this season…Ward went 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBI to boost his Minor League-leading RBI total to 118 this season for the most RBI in a single season by a PCL player since 2010 when Salt Lake’s Mark Trumbo had 122 RBI.

Dalton Rushing continued a Major League Rehab Assignment and appeared in a second straight game with the Comets, drawing three walks and going 0-for-1 with a run scored as the designated hitter.

  • Kody Hoese – 2-4, 2 runs, 2 doubles (25)
  • Justin Dean – 2-3, 1 BB, 1 run
  • Noah Miller – 2-4, 1 run, 4 RBI, HR (4)
  • Ryan Ward – 1-3, 1 BB, 1 run, 3 RBI, HR (33)
  • Alex Freeland – double (27)

Box Score

Tulsa Drillers 7 –   Arkansas Travelers (Seattle) 1

Tulsa started fast with 5 in the first.  Kole Myers and Zach Ehrhard singled to lead off the inning.  With one out, Chris Newell hit a ground ball to 2nd, but the throw was late to home was late.  Yeiner Fernandez reached on an error, allowing a 2nd run to score.  That was followed with back to back BB to force in a 3rd run.  With the bases still loaded, Taylor Young singled to plate 2 more.

A walk and 2 singles led to a Travelers run off started Wyatt Crowell in the 4th.  The Drillers got it back in the bottom of the inning with an Ehrhard single and James Tibbs III triple (2).

Tibbs III doubles in the 7th, moved to 3rd on a passed ball, and scored on a Griffin Lockwood-Powell single.

The Drillers held Arkansas in check with two pitchers.  Crowell completed 5.0 IP allowing the one run on 3 hits, 2 BB, and 5 K.  Chris Campos followed Crowell and finished the final 4.0 innings in scoreless fashion.  He allowed 3 hits, but no BB, and registered 3 K.

The win lowered Tulsa’s magic number to two as Wichita also won, defeating Corpus Christi 8-3 to remain on the Drillers’ heels. The Drillers need a combination wins and Wichita losses that totals two to claim the final playoff berth. There are two games remaining in the regular season.

  • Zach Ehrhard – 2-4, 2 runs
  • James Tibbs III – 2-4, 1 run, 1 RBI, double (4), triple (2)
  • Taylor Young – 2-4, 2 RBI

Geez, but Tanner Scott seems determined to be left off the playoff roster.
Of course he’s trying. But it’s been one debacle after another–and, unfortunately, AF failed to snag a stud closer at the deadline, unlike potential rivals San Diego (Mason Miller) and Philly (Jhoan Duran).
Could the brass stubbornly insist on putting Scott on the roster because they decided to pay him so much? Certainly seems possible. But where is Scott on that “trust tree” Roberts likes to talk about.
At this point in the season, this should be a meritocracy.
Clearly Vesia and Dreyer, both lefties like Scott, have out-pitched him. If the brass thinks they need another lefty, now Andrew Heaney looks like a very good option. (Kudos to the brass for that pick up.) For that matter, Kershaw could be used out of the pen if not in the starting rotation.
And do we need to worry about Treinen?
I don’t see him missing the roster, but perhaps Emmet Sheehan should be getting the ball late in the game.
And now there’s the sudden rise of Roki Sasaki, with his velo back up to triple digits.
The subplots are interesting. But the Dodgers don’t really look bullet-proof heading toward October.

Tanner Scott is being snake bit. I agree we’re.getting to trust factor territory but I think they are giving him a chance to figure it out, his stuff looks good but his command is off and why does every ball that does get hit off him go over the fence? He had a guy struck out but the ump blew it.
The whole 10 th inning was a mess, Mookie error, umpire error, Tanner Scott gopher ball.

I think the magic number is 12. A tie at the end of the season gives the Dodgers the division.

Unless we play the Rockies in October, our starters will have pitch shutouts!

Good points. On the bright side, we are learning that Rortvedt can play.
The bullpen, mostly healthy, is the big concern.

I think the Dodgers will have options to fix the bullpen even before the playoffs ..IF they’ll use them.

The officials should have overturned Pages’ being called out at 1b, which costed the Dodgers a run. That missed call loomed LARGE in why they lost that game.

I didn’t see the finish. Times doesn’t give a good description of what happened in the 10th. Did Mookie’s throwing error extend the inning?

Hardly matters. Offense 4 for 33. A lot of 0fers in that game. A closer who has clearly lost it. Dodgers 4-6 in a closing pennant race. Is this who they are? Appears so.

Yes, Mookie’s error contributed to the loss. But the overriding concern is Smith’s hand injury. This team simply has no other star-batter like him at catcher. If he’s not permanently in the line-up at near 100% during the playoffs, the Dodgers will be done anyway.

4-Gens

The Dodgers are not a good defensive team and, combined with poor at-bats, it will cost the team games in the playoffs. Two errors leading to SF runs in playoff atmosphere/implication game? Can’t happen.

Everyone (including the announcers) tell me how great Mookie is at short. Fine, his stats are great, but he does not pass my eye test. Freeman saves his poor throws and, as a new SS, there are many “new” situations he will find himself in.

At this point, he is our SS. I’m just tired of the “Mookie is the best SS” in the league banter.

Pages? Knucklehead.

Muncy, Conforto, Teo? Fielding mistakes waiting to happen.

You will likely get some pushback on that take 4-Gens, but not from me. The Dodgers have needed a shortstop since Seager left and they didn’t get one.

At this point in the season SF looks more like a playoff team than do the Dodgers. Are they this year’s Diamondbacks? Could be if we don’t stop them.

The Giants are playing for the Wild Card. They are animated and energized. They have done well as a Wild Card entry for the Playoffs. Good for them. So sad the Mets aren’t doing well. Their owner is trying to buy a championship. See what I did there?

Betts had a subpar night on both sides of the ball. Unfortunately it came down to him in the risp situations and he had bad at bats. Teoscar was awful last night and that was pretty much the game. Scott gave up a granny but he struck the guy out and they reversed the call. We would have had 2 outs and still tied. They may have scored but the umpire forced the strategy to load the bases. I just don’t understand Scott. He is still throwing 97-99 even if his location is off u would think the hitters would make an out once in awhile. Idk but when they signed him it was almost unfair. I watched him strike out Ohtani like 10 times in a row. Mb that was a bad gauge because Ohtani strikes out against everyone. Yamamoto has been great the last several outings! The offense has been terrible since the first month or so of the year. I figure Muncy will be out again and why wasn’t smith playing? Part of the reason the offense struggles is they can’t hit, can’t bunt, no speed. Homer or nothing.

Wow! Yates and Scott are turning out to be two of the worst FA signings in MLB history. No way Yates should make the post season roster and Scott last man in. I know one of the reasons AF signed Scott was because Ohtani can’t hit him, but at this point he may be the only hitter in MLB who can’t. I love Kersh but at this point in his career can you really give him an October start? Haven’t said this in a while, but the offense won this game. I think?

No October start for kershaw. He has been huge this year but if everyone else is healthy he is not on the roster. He can’t be in relief because of his difficulty in the first innings.
