Rockies-Dodgers Summary: Game 2

Walker Buehler took the mound for the Dodgers in the second game of this three-game series with the Rockies. So far, the Dodgers have played well against Colorado losing only 2 of the 8 games played.

Buehler started off a little shaky, allowing a double to Blackmon and then walking Tovar. A will pitch sent them to second and third with no outs. McMahon struck out and then Toglia hit a ball back to Buehler that instead of throwing to first, he went home, and his throw was high.

Rodgers struck out and then so did Hilliard. Dodgers went quietly in the first with just a single by Freeman. Jones singled off of Buehler, Cave lined out to Rojas and Stallings was hit by a pitch. Blackmon lined out to Betts for the second out. Tovar then doubled down the left field line to score 2. McMahon grounded out for the third out. There was a play that affected the inning, there was a foul ball down the line behind first base that Lux got to and dropped. It extended the inning so Tovar could get to the plate.

The Dodgers went down 1-2-3 in the second. Buehler settled down in the third and struck out the side for the second time. After two quick outs in the bottom of the inning, Ohtani walked, and Mookie hit his 18th homer to left, 3-2 Rockies.

Buehler got the Rockies 1-2-3 in the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, Edman struck out and Muncy walked. Lux singled to right and Rojas flied out to center and Muncy went to third. Feduccia then singled to right driving in his first career run.

That would be the end of the Dodgers night scoring runs. McMahon would homer off of Buehler in the 5rh putting the Rockies up 4-3. The score stayed that way until the top of the 9th when Hudson, for the second game in a row, allowed a homer to Charlie Blackmon scoring 2 runs. That made it 6-3 Rockies and that is the way it ended even though the Dodgers loaded the bases and Max Muncy struck out.

The team was 1-8 with RISP, and they hit into 2 double plays killing rallies. Lack of clutch hitting caused this loss and some shoddy fielding and giving up late homers. They had 7 hits and 7 walks, so there was plenty of traffic on the bases.

The home plate umpire was awful once again. His strike zone was inconsistent, and he called several balls strikes. The Dodgers have 7 games left and a 3-game lead over the Padres. Yamamoto is set to pitch tomorrow, and it is a must win game with the Padres playing the pitiful White Sox.

Milwaukee lost to the D-Backs and the Phillies lost to the Mets. Dodgers remain tied with the Phillies, but the Phillies have the tiebreaker. Tony Gonsolin went three innings at Salt Lake tonight in the OKC win. He allowed no hits, walked one and struck out 6. Outman was 4-5 with a homers. Rushing was 3-6 with 2 homers and Ward also hit 2. He now has 33 on the year. Okey hit his second of the year.

The Dodgers need to play clean baseball these next 7 games. Little things like dropping a foul pop cannot happen come playoff time.

My confidence level with Buehler is 3 at best on a level from 0-10. Gonsolin more and more looks like an option to me.
Hudson looks wobbly at best. Confidence level in him not much higher than in Buehler. I still say they should have given Henriquez a look. Need guys who can strike out hitters , especially in postseason play. Now it probably is too late to bring him up.

Honeywell again did a great job. Have more confidence in him than Kelly or Hudson. But I am pretty sure the Dodgers will go with Kelly and Hudson.

As it stands with our pitching situation the Dodgers will have to score tons of runs in the postseason to go deep in the playoffs.
But they have a lot of weak bats on their current rosters. KK, CT3, Kike, Fiduccia (though his average is rather high at the moment, but small sample size) or Barnes.

As with Henriquez I think they should have given Rushing some runway.

Home plate ump was horrific. Lux was ahead 2-0 in that key at bat when a BB would tied the game. Then two called strikes on two balls inside which should have been a 4 pitch walk to tied the score. Instead Lux strikes out eventually.
That challenge system they use in AAA can´t come soon enough.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You could tell a few Dodger hitters lost focus. Muncy was so pissed he spit on the ground as he left the box. I was looking for Rehak’s scorecard but it isn’t listed yet. He had a bad night. I know it’s said you have to adjust to the strike zone being called, but it’s a shame it has to happen at that level. His mistakes had an effect on the game and that should not happen. It can be fixed, but for some reason MLB is being stubborn about it.

Jeff

Where do you find the Ump scorecards, Badger?

Badger

There’s a few places Jeff. Here’s one though I’m not sure how accurate it is

https://umpscorecards.com/single_umpire/?name=Jeremie+Rehak

https://umpscorecards.us/info/

I’ve seen there are more detailed Heat Maps, Impactful Calls Missed with changes in run expectancies info. I’ve seen them posted here on occasion but I’m having difficulty finding last night’s game. Somebody here can find them I’m sure. I did read Rehak apparently is one of the more accurate umpires. Maybe he just had a bad night. At any rate several Dodgers were pissed as his missed calls did have an elevated Run Impact last night.

But all that said Dodger pitchers just gave up too many earned runs. And it could have been worse. Rockies were 2 for 13 WRISP.

A bad night? The guy was cross-eyed. It was a joke.

Jeff

THX.

Bluto

X account named, oddly enough, umpscorecards.

Oldbear48

Henriquez is not going to get a look. You can scratch that off of your list. Same with Rushing.

dodgerram

That is why I wrote that it is probably too late now for a call up.
Anyway, IMHO two big mistakes by Dodgers management to not even give them a look. Especially when our bullpen has to be nails in a successful playoff run an our offense needs to be hitting on all cylinders too.

Need every arm and bat you can have.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!111

porpoiseboy

What “nails” pictures did Texas have last year? Based on their regular season?

Oldbear48

I do not know about any pictures the Rangers had except the pose on the field after they won the series. But their bullpen pitchers were nails.

Bobby

Gonsolin 3ip 6k last night, but I didn’t see how hard he was throwing. Would be interesting to know.

dodgerram

He was around 93,94 mph. What was a bit disappointing that they took him out after only 45 pitches when Roberts said on his news conference they were hoping to see 60-65 pitches. From a built up perpective that was disappointing.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!

tedraymond

Gotta keep him “fresh” for the playoffs. Lol. Or was Roberts misinformed?

Bluto

Neither?

Singing the Blue

Always hard to tell with Doc whether he was misinformed or misinforming.

Bobby

Obviously gonsolin is being shut down for the year thats why

Oldbear48

Doc says what the FO tells him he can say. The Dodgers are one of the tightest lipped teams in the majors. They rarely volunteer the truth.

Badger

I was mentioning the other day no teams were hot yet. Well, the Padres at 8-2 are hot now. It would appear they will come into town with an opportunity to catch us.

Looking at the schedule shows Buehler will pitch again, in Colorado against Quantril, and Yamamoto will pitch twice. Flaherty will pitch once against San Diego and it appears that will be it for him. On ESPN it shows a ? on September 26th.

The rotation remains worrisome to me. This team just has to score and score big. When the do they win, when they don’t, last night, they lose.

Just win today.

This is interesting Badger, correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t remember a hot streak for the Dodgers this year.

From Joe Sheehan:
Among those with 50+ steals Ohtani has the 3rd highest success rate ever. (Max Carey in 1922 (!!!) and Jacob Ellsbury for the BoSox in 2013 are better)

Badger

The Dodgers looked like a 112 win team early. Since then? Not so much. And as we know, it’s who’s hot at the end of the year. Maybe they start a streak today.

Ohtani has this base stealing thing down. Take the base on balls and steal second. Great strategy if you ask me.

Dave

I agree there are some bad calls by umpires but last night the announcers were complaining because.some.pitches that missed by an inch were called wrong! But we all need to remember that the ump doesn’t have a computer generated strike zone to use like what we see. Give em a break, an inch?!

Sam Oyed

It can be frustrating when a pitch is one inch “off’ the generated strike zone. But we all need to remember that the plate is 3-D and if the umpire uses a different plane then what is being generated what looks like a strike in one plane may not be in another.

That said, some of the calls (to Edman when he was called out on strikes), were ridiculously bad.

Badger

As it was explained to me in my umpire training is, simply put, it’s a strike or it isn’t. Just like it’s an out or it isn’t.

I know for a fact Major League players know their own strike zone. It’s been the same for them for thousands of pitches over several years. Most of the time when you see them complaining they are right. Both Lux and Muncy were right last night.

Oldbear48

He called several pitches strikes that were a lot further off of the plate than that. He called a strike on Lux on a pitch that was at least 4 inches above the strike zone. Did the same thing to Muncy in his last at bat. He was terrible.

Therealten

I said from the jump last night the ump was bad. He changed the game with the calls on Edman, lux, and Muncy to list a few. None of those were particularly close. Roberts had a hand in this loss. With the bases loaded they bring in a lefty vs. lux. Lux is overmatched against lefties. Even though he should have walked he struck out. Then, Blackman should never have been pitched to. He kills the Dodgers, he had hit a homer off Hudson the night before, a righty on deck. The game ended right there. Hudson has nothing at this point. Many of the relievers have been overused and will not be able to recover this year.

such a disappointment that Gonsolin only threw 45 pitches. Struck out 6 and apparently was rolling but no take him out due to the buildup. BS get the guy ready. Before everyone says the chess players are so smart and we are so stupid. Why are we sitting here 2 years in a row with no pitching? Not everyone heals the some. U just don’t use a cookie cutter for a human being. He probably can’t get ready now because the slow mo handling. Mb they should have been as considerate when they were knowingly pitching him hurt last year.

Rodgerdodger

Roberts seemed to hurt the team more than he helped. We have seen this in the playoffs before.

That 2nd paragraph, sarcasm or serious?

OhioDodger

Well Roberts is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he did not go 1 for 8
RISP and strand 12 runners.

dodgerram

Should have batted Pages for Lux vs the LHP the Rockies brought in with bases loaeded.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!

OhioDodger

Yes, that was a head scratcher.

Badger

Maybe Gonsolin is being groomed for long relief. If he’s efficient, 45 pitches can get 3 innings. That could be very helpful in the playoffs.

Therealten

Mb they start him in Colorado.

Mike Digiovanna has resurfaced at Yahoo, has a nice article on Glasnow:

https://sports.yahoo.com/tyler-glasnow-frustrated-recurring-elbow-020948150.html

Glasnow said he has been told by several biomechanical experts and coaches that his pitching mechanics are sound, but sometimes he can get “a little long” in his delivery, a common problem for pitchers as tall as Glasnow.”

Make Mine Blue

Good article Bluto. I read it and saw all kinds of red flags for the future of Glasnow. After reading the article, knowing his past history of arm problems, reading between the lines, I’d have to say that Glasnow is very likely done for any long term basis. He might rehab and come back for some limited length of time, but when you start screwing with a guys natural mechanics that usually leads to other physical problems for the guy (back, hips, etc.) I think the Dodgers probably know this too and know they are going to have to move on from counting on Glasnow as a future foundational piece.

Bluto

LOL.

Good to see uninformed people have no problem positing opinions.

Make Mine Blue

That does seem to be your MO

Bluto

The old “I am rubber you are glue” argument.

I can’t tell whether that’s more or less sophomoric than pretending to know something you don’t.

Badger

Read that in The Times this morning. Shorten up? Taking a foot off his pitches is going to make him that much more hittable. He’s been good but not that good.

Too bad we have so many damaged arms….i was hoping Buehler would rise up because I know Miller and Glasnow can’t…..so I guess Knack gets the ball. Who knows?

Bumsrap

Myself, I was encouraged with Buehler’s outing. Hopefully he takes another step forward with his next start and has a great playoff.

I wonder if it will be pitchers or hitters that will be happier with electronic strike zones and ABS.

I’d like to see Outman back on the Dodgers. That’s not a prediction Bear.

Badger

What about that outing was encouraging? 4 earned in 5 pitched against a last place team is kinda awful. If that were the Phillies it could’ve been twice as worser.

OhioDodger

I am not very confident when Hudson comes in. He has given up 10 HR’s and 45 runs in 61 IP. If I am not mistaken, he has 7 blown saves. There must be a better option.

Oldbear48

You are mistaken. 10 homers yes, but he has given up 25 runs 21 of which are earned. He has had stretches where he has been almost unhittable. Pitching to Blackmon was a mistake. He has given up 45 hits in 61 innings which is pretty decent.

OhioDodger

Oops, My mistake. He still has not been very good for the last couple of weeks.

Phil Jones

Buehler is an enigma. But we really have no choice keeping him in the starting rotation. His 9 k’s were impressive but he still seems to make critical mistakes. And his misses are huge. And he doesn’t get away with much. Weird shit like Lux dropping a foul pop-up and Walker’s poor throw to the plate, added to the misery.
*The Umpire score-card, had Jeremy Rehab missing 6 pitches he’s all night. What bullshit, he had 6 misses in an inning. What a disparity between umpires. A few games ago we saw Jordan Baker’s strike zone. Baker is very good and very consistent but his strike zone is dinky. He makes pitches get a good bit of the plate. And Rehak had a 24 inch wide plate, that’s impossible to cover.
*It looked like Doc didn’t want to make any moves that might influence the outcome of the game. Like pinch hitting for Lux in the 5th with the bases juices. He’s hitting a nifty .156 vs LHP. Pages is hitting .396 vs LHP but Doc never flinched. The Rockies couldn’t change to a RHP as Peralta had not faced 3 batters.
And pitch around Blackmon. He owns us.
And I would have sac bunted with Rojas, bottom 8, with Lux on first with No outs. Get the tying run to second. You have to let Feducia hit, as we were out of LHB bats. Maybe pinch hit with Smith? But Feducia’s ground ball double play would not have ended the inning had Lux been on second base.
Will Smith had the night off. So did Doc.

Couldn’t be more confident going into October with this starting pitching!

Scott Andes

I’m assuming this is sarcasm?

Therealten

Orel keeps talking about Ohtani taking a chance on the steal late last night. Today u c why he did it. Freeman hits ground balls and hits into a dp right on q.

Scott Andes

The Dodgers have a 5.05 ERA in the first inning. Important stat to keep an eye on. They are allowing multiple runs in the first inning almost every game. And today Yamamoto allows 3 in the first to the Rockies. Almost every game they are losing immediately.

The starting pitching is garbage 🗑

Oldbear48

As it should be with as many front-line pitchers as they have on the shelf.

Oldbear48

Nationals sent CJ Abrams down. He will not report to AAA, but he is going to their Florida complex instead.

Oldbear48

Freeman has been up twice and accounted for 4 outs. Freddie is definitely not having a Freddie type year. He used to be the guy you wanted up when you needed a run. Max is out with soreness in his side. It is not looking good for the home team. I could see them calling up Outman and DFAing Kiermaier, especially if Muncy is having problems with his side again.

OhioDodger

I hope we are not seeing the beginning of Freddie’s decline. He is 35. It is coming.

Wally Moonshot

Bases loaded, no outs= no runs. Against the Rockies. How is that even possible?

Wally Moonshot

Speaking of things seemingly impossible— White Sox up 2-1 over the Pads in the sixth.

SandyAmoros

Freeman appears to be toast the decline is already here unfortunate

OhioDodger

Well, he is not toast yet, but I believe the decline has started.

OhioDodger

While I believe we are seeing the start of Freddie’s decline. I do believe it will be slow. He has had a trying year off the field.

Make Mine Blue

I really don’t see any possible way that this team isn’t bounced (again) in their first round.

Therealten

Great comeback win!!! Go Dodgers!!!!

Exciting Game 3 WIN!

Last two innings were, in my opinion, very evocative of the modern game.

the eighth only reinforced how hard it is to single and small ball your way to runs. Pitching and positioning too good.

the ninth showed the power of stars, of high-revenue teams and the power of the homer
