We are experiencing a struggling top of the order with LAD. But WHAT IF, this is who they are now and will be in the future?
To be considered qualified for league leaders in BA/OBP/SLG/OPS, a player must have 3.1 PA per game scheduled. There are 25 qualified SS in MLB. The average age of the 25 qualified SS is 27.08. Mookie Betts is 32 (turns 33 in August). Mookie is playing a young man’s position, and at 32 he is really still learning the position. His offense has taken a serious dive this year. Mookie says that it is not the position. Some say it was the illness in the beginning of the year. Mookie says he is and has been at full strength for some time. So why?
At present, Mookie is hitting .249/.321/.392/.713 with a 101 OPS+. That is exactly 1% above league average. When asked, Mookie says he is simply not hitting. No reason. What is he supposed to say?
Here are the 14 qualified SS and ages with an OPS greater than Mookie:
- Jeremy Peña – 27
- Bobby Witt Jr. – 25
- Jacob Wilson – 23
- CJ Abrams – 24
- Elly De La Cruz – 23
- Trea Turner – 32
- Zach Neto – 24
- Francisco Lindor – 31
- Geraldo Perdomo – 25
- Josh Smith – 27
- Gunnar Henderson – 24
- JP Crawford – 30
- Bo Bichette – 27
- Dansby Swanson – 31
Of the 25 qualified SS, Mookie is older than 24. Only Trevor Story is older, and that is by one month.
Defensively, Mookie is playing well. Not elite, but very good. He has an OAA of +4, and a DRS of +7. I do not know why that would be a surprise. Mookie is an exceptional athlete. However, IMO, his value emanates from his bat more than his SS glove, or at least it should. The team relies on Mookie’s bat at the top of the order.
So maybe it’s age that is creeping in? Not every SS starts to decline at 32, then again how many Derek Jeter’s have there been.
- @ 32 – .343/.417/.483/.900
- @ 35 – .334/.406/.465/.871
- @ 36 – .270/.340/.370/.710 – Led AL in PA with 739
- @ 38 – .316/.362/.429/.791 – Led MLB in PA with 740
Mookie is a HOF player, but not if you are looking at him as a SS. He generated his HOF bona fides as a RF. Mookie says he prefers infield, and I can appreciate that. But the goal should be…what is best for the team. I do not have the answer to that, but that shouldn’t dismiss the question.
Mookie is certainly not alone in his struggles offensively. Shohei Ohtani started his “struggles” once he started pitching. We continue to hear he has done it before so why should now be different.
Yes, Shohei has pitched and hit before while with LAA. His offensive numbers while with LAA were .274/.366/.556/.922. Those were his prime years. His current slash line is .280/.382/.609/.991. That line is dropping. Since June, Shohei is slashing .250/.358/.508/.865.
2023 was Shohei’s best year as a pitcher. He was #4 in CY voting. That year he hit .273/.356/.519/.875.
There is absolutely no question that when Shohei pitches he is outstanding. And he should be considered top of the rotation for the Dodgers. But is it realistic to expect 2024 offensive numbers when he is also pitching?
What if his LAA numbers and his 2025 June/July numbers are more representative of his production while as a pitcher? Maybe what we are seeing now is what we are going to see through 2025 and beyond? As long as everyone else is producing, I can get behind that strategy all day long.
Then there is Freddie Freeman. At the beginning of the season, Freddie was putting up MVP numbers. On May 10, Freddie went 4-4 with a Sac Fly, 2 doubles, 1 HR, and 3 RBI. He was batting – .376/.437/.734/1.170, with 8 doubles, 8 HR and 30 RBI. That was 29 games, and the Dodgers were 19-10 in those games.
After May 10, in 49 games 207 PA, Freddie is hitting .267/.338/.353/.691 with 15 doubles, 1 HR, and 16 RBI. The Dodgers are 27-22 in those 49 games.
It is clear the Dodgers need the first of the season Freddie.
Of course there is time for Freddie to turn it around, but what if age is catching up to the 35 year old (36 on September 12)? What if the post May 10 production is more in line with what we can expect?
If I am Dave Roberts, Freddie gets no more than 3 innings and 2 PA in the All Star game.
I know I can include Teoscar Hernández (32) in this post. His 2025 numbers are just about the same as his 2023 numbers with Seattle. Was 2024 the anomaly? I was not opposed to re-signing Teo, but was not thrilled for 3 years.
With the above 4 struggling, where would the Dodgers have been without Max Muncy. Max has been out 5 games, and the team is 1-4, with the lone win against CWS.
One other trait I have noticed, and I do not have the time to research it, but it sure seems that the Dodgers lead the league in called 3rd strikes. With all of the analytics, it sure seems they are up at the plate guessing what is coming rather than reacting. They get fooled and watch pitches right down the middle of the plate. Houston didn’t seem to guess. They reacted to the pitch. Altuve hit a single into RF on a pitch that may have been a foot outside.
Another observation – with the 3B moving closer to the SS position when Hyeseong Kim is batting, why isn’t he bunting for a hit? If he puts the bunt down he is going to get a single. Yeah, I know, a single is only 1 base for SLG and OPS, and that will mess up the strategy of hard swing and launch angle approach to hitting that the Dodgers hitting coaches are so enamored with. Every hitter is different, and every hitter’s strategy should reflect them and not what the coach thinks they should do. Shohei and Muncy are going to swing as hard as they can, because that is who they are. That is not who Hyeseong Kim and Tommy Edman are.
The team is getting Tyler Glasnow back on Wednesday. Blake Snell and Blake Treinen will be joining the team after the All Star break and before the trade deadline. Ohtani may be up to 3.0 IP by then. If the team is going to continue to minimize Ohtani’s innings, the team better look for some better relievers than Matt Klein, Lou Trivino, and Julian Fernández. Treinen is one. But will he stay healthy for the remainder of the year?
Is Emmet Sheehan going to stay in the rotation making it a 6 man?
- Yoshinobu Yamamato
- Clayton Kershaw
- Tyler Glasnow
- Dustin May
- Shohei Ohtani/Ben Casparius
- Emmet Sheehan
Or is Yamamoto going to take Sheehan’s place on Sunday? What happens when Blake Snell joins the rotation. Dustin May to the pen? Or Casparius to the pen and May piggy back with Ohtani?
Regardless as to where the pitching is, the top of the order has to produce or it is going to be a long 2nd half.
MiLB GAME SUMMARY REPORTS
OKC Comets 2 – Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston) 1
Kyle Funkhouser completed 5.2 scoreless innings. He allowed 4 hits, issued 2 BB, and recorded 5 K. In the 6th, Sugar Land got a 1-out and single, and a batter reached on a 2-out fielding error. Edgardo Henriquez entered and struck out Jesús Bastidas for the final out of the 6th.
OKC broke a 0-0 tie with a solo HR by Noah Miller in the 5th. It was his 2nd HR since being assigned to OKC.
In the 7th, Henriquez issued a BB who scored on a one-out triple to tie the score.
In the 8th, OKC broke the 1-1 tie. With 2 outs, 4 Comets drew consecutive BB to force one run in and the eventual 2-1 win.
José Rodríguez entered the 8th and issued a BB, but recorded 2 K. In the 9th, Rodríguez got one out, but walked 2. The Comets called on Jack Little to close out the game, and recorded the final two outs for his 11th save.
Other than Miller’s HR, the only other hit by a Comet was a one out double (18) by Ryan Ward in the 4th inning.
Arkansas Travelers 6 – Tulsa Drillers 4
The Tulsa Drillers struggles continued Tuesday night with a 6-4 loss to the Arkansas Travelers in the first game of a six-game series between the two teams.
The game’s first batter, Taylor Young, drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position with a swipe of second base. Yeiner Fernandez brought him home with a run-scoring single.
The Travelers answered in the bottom of the second with a Lazaro Montes HR.
Two more runs in the third put the Travs in front, and they used stolen bases to produce both. Michael Arroyo led off with a base hit, stole second and scored on single from Bill Knight. Like Arroyo, Knight moved into scoring position by stealing second base, then scored on hit by Montes.
The same formula allowed Arkansas to up its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth after a single, SB, and run scoring single.
The Drillers trimmed their deficit to just one run in the sixth inning. John Rhodes led off with a double and came home on Chris Newell’s triple. Newell scored to make it 4-3 on Kendall Simmons’ ground out.
The Travs got the two runs back in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Jeisson Cabrera. A hit batter, a walk and a wild pitch set up a two-run single.
Young reached base for the fourth time in the game when he drew a leadoff walk to open the ninth. After advancing all the way to third on a ground out by Kole Myers, Young scored on another hit by Fernandez.
With Fernandez on base and the potential tying run at the plate, a ground out and a fly out ended the threat.
Tulsa stranded ten runners on base in the loss.
Fernandez had three hits in the game, all singles. It was his fifth three-hit game of the year, most on the team. Fernandez is also tied with Ezequiel Pagan for the most multi-hit games on the team with 20.
Tulsa starting pitcher Peter Heubeck was tagged with the loss, allowing the four runs in five innings. He allowed seven hits, but did not walk a batter while striking out eight, just one shy of a season high.
The double by Rhodes in the sixth inning continued his hot streak. He has hit safely in five straight games and in eight of his past nine.
With the win, the Travelers took a 7-6 lead in the season series between the two teams.
- Taylor Young – 2-3, 2 BB, 2 runs
- Yeiner Fernandez – 3-5, 2 RBI
- John Rhodes – 1-3, 1 BB, 1 run, double (11)
- Chris Newell – 1-4, 1 BB, 1 run, 1 RBI, triple (1)
Great Lakes Loons 3 – Lansing Lugnuts (A’s) 2
Lansing got out to a 2-0 lead off SP Wyatt Crowell. In the 4th, Crowell issued a BB and 2 singles scored the 1st run. In the 6th, a single, WP, and single scored the 2nd run.
In the 7th, Zyhir Hope led off with a BB, Jake Gelof followed with a single. Both scored with a Cameron Decker 3-run HR.
There were no multi-hits by any of the Loons.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 10 – Inland Empire 66ers (LAA) 3
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes opened their six-game home stand on the right foot, blasting the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday night, 10-3.
After falling behind 3-1 in the third, Rancho scored the game’s final nine runs, on their way to their 16th win in 19 games against Inland Empire this season.
Eduardo Quintero smashed his league-leading 14th homer to open the bottom of the first, as the Quakes answered a homer from Raudi Rodriguez in the first, tying the game at 1-1.
Rancho starter Samuel Sanchez gave up single runs in the second and again in the third, before the Quakes’ offense got busy in the bottom of the third, scoring four times.
Niko Perez smashed a two-run double to break a 3-3 tie, as the Quakes took the lead for good at 5-3.
Mairo Martinus, who had two hits and three RBIs on the night, clubbed his second homer of the year in the fifth, as the Quakes took a 6-3 lead.
Rancho got another in the seventh and then put it away with three in the eighth, including two from a two-run single by Elijah Hainline.
Quakes’ reliever Justin Chambers, making his Cal League debut, tossed two innings of hitless relief to net the win.

Where’s Wrobleski?
In OKC waiting for the next injury or pitcher collapse. Sheehan is in the rotation and the Dodgers have already decided to keep Casparius over Wrobleski. To be fair, the Dodgers have 3 LHRP in the pen…Scott, Dreyer, and Vesia.
He’s our rotating 6th SP
He is the rotating 7th starter:
Yamamoto
Kershaw
Glasnow
May
Ohtani/Casparius
Sheehan
There is a reason why Wrobleski is in OKC…waiting. And I say that as a Wrobo fan. Which is why I am not a fan of acquiring another SP, unless it is Paul Skenes.
I’d prefer Skubal, but I’m also thinking Misioroski might be nice…
No chance of that happening
I don’t care if it’s Hyesong Kim, or if it’s Luis Trevino. When the 3b is playing basically next to the SS, BUNT!!!
Get on base somehow, and good things will happen.
It’s only one batter and our problems are much deeper. I don’t disagree with your take, though.
Worth noting that Kim’s OBP is .373, third on the team after Smith and Shohei.
But sure, lay down a bunt when warranted.
Apparently Landon Knack and Alexis Díaz are in Milwaukee. for a potential pitcher roster churn. Maybe the plan is for Yamamoto to pitch on Sunday and that might put Sheehan on the option train. Díaz over Klein?
Sheehan can be recalled 15 days after being optioned unless there is an injury.
AF/BG keeps searching for the RHRP whose career they can resurrect. It is ALexis Díaz turn. Landon Knack has been horrible since being optioned. I am not sure why he is being recalled. If they do not need Sheehan to start, he can certainly be an effective reliever. Myabe it would be Casparius. I prefer Casparius to Knack.
A lot of conjecture, and guessing what MIGHT happen.
I think it is awesome that the Dodgers have Mookie’s bat at short.
Big swing Kim should bunt more and slap more.
James Outman Has Started Wearing Glasses Like Max Muncy, Kiké Hernandez.
I want Pepiot back.
Tampa Bay doesn’t care what you want.😍
And I don’t want to live in Florida
more:
As per Dodgers Daily:
Jose Ramos and Ronan Kopp promoted
LHRP Ben Harris and INF Michael Chavis released. Kopp was expected. Ramos makes no sense unless it opens up a spot for one of the Great Lakes OF.
No slump busting with this kid. 10 Ks in 4 innings. wow!
No kidding. He’s the best pitcher I’ve seen in a long time. No let up in his game. 100mph left a lot of open mouths on the Dodgers. Another Bitch Slapping!
ESPN’s David Schoenfield suggested a potential six-player trade between the Dodgers and Pirates ahead of the July 31 deadline.
Dodgers acquire: RHP Paul Skenes
Pirates acquire: C Dalton Rushing, OF Josue De Paula, IF Alex Freeland, RHP Emmet Sheehan, LHP Jackson Ferris
I am not suggesting it. But I will go out on a limb and say not happening.
For me, a big time starter that doesn’t complete 8 innings, is like a strong chain with one or 2 weak links.
Covered this in the other post, it’s part of a larger hypothetical:
Everyone knows it’s WAY WAY past time to end the Conforto experiment. So I’ll just boycott watching any Dodgers game where he’s is in the lineup.
OVERMATCHED!!!!!!!
So maybe what it takes to win a WS is a five game losing streak during the season like last year. Mission accomplished!
Speaking of struggling:
Today’s at Bats
4 hits, 15 Ks, 0 for 6 WRISP. Freeman and Kim dropping like rocks, Outman and Conforto are… Outman and Conforto, Betts appears to have lost it at the plate, Pages 4 for 24. This team looks like they could use some time off.
Perspective:
After 93 games in 2024 Dodgers had a record of 57-36
After 93 games in 2025 Dodgers have a 56-37 record.
A lot of baseball left, but I can’t lie. The slow bats of FF, Betts have me very concerned.
Weren’t a lot of us concerned at this time last season?
Exactly, every fan is concerned about it. I wonder if Dodgers’ management is too.
Do geniuses worry? I’ve never seen a worried look on AF.
Maybe they do. But I’m not talking about “worried,” I mean concern, ..as in concerned to the point of having to react to a possible change in reality.
Not every fan.
Not even most fans.
And as to the front office? Doubtful.
I don’t have any info or inside scoop on what the front office thinks about this issue either way. Do you?
Only past history.
Didn’t read your article until after the game. While I was watching I kept thinking that Kim should bunt. Especially with Misso being overpowering.
How about that. The Dodger troll who pretends he is a Dodger fan is back after a 5 game losing streak. How pathetically inevitable.
Wow! How Mark Timmons of you Jeff.
Dodgers need Scott Andes. Look how he fired the boys up last summer with his blow it all up rant. I think Scott should repost it again and don’t forget to add how old and over the hill both Mookie and Freddie look.
This had nothing to do with Scott. He is welcome any time. He doesn’t come in and ambush only at losing streaks and he comes back with mea culpas when the Dodgers win. It’s the ambush and run aways I want nothing to do with.
I got scolded by someone (don’t remember who), by carrying on a conversation with Scott. He articulates his position. He and I do not agree on much, but he is welcome.
I think I know who you are talking about. But not 100% sure.
He’s not talking about me Cassidy
I wouldn’t be too sure about that, Scott.
Maybe he’s talking about you Bluto? You sure pissed him off the other day.
Not talking about Bluto either. It was not the first time Bluto has ticked me off, and I am sure it will not be the last. He is very welcome here.
Look I am not going to get along with everyone all the time, and I am sure it is reciprocal at times.
Reading comprehension.
What part of this implies someone he got into a temporary spat with?
“How about that. The Dodger troll who pretends he is a Dodger fan is back after a 5 game losing streak. How pathetically inevitable.”
My comment was in response to Jeff and his continuous noxious statements about the Dodgers. He only comes around when they are losing and runs and hides when the Dodgers win.
Ok, so this reminds me. Long time ago we had a somewhat heated discussion about something or other, and I attributed to you the opinion that you objected to the prospect of signing Ohtani. I had read the comment on Mark’s site. I thought it was a pretty ridiculously bad take at the time, and only became more so as Ohtani has actually played.
Actually, it was a Jeff who went on record as being against signing Ohtani, but it was not you. It was this Jeff, apparently.
Sorry for the misattribution. I’m wrong often.
What makes you think he’s talking about me?
Well, I was wrong so it doesn’t matter, but I believe you have a penchant for posting (alliteration!) when losing streaks occur.
Dish that T Jeff. (Grabs popcorn 🍿)
Who are you talking about?
Has nothing to do with you Scott. You are welcome any time.
Thank you Jeff
Also curious who this mystery man is.
The other Jeff.
Yes please enlighten us.
I know of a way to make a turkey anxious and it works everytime.
For anyone who wants a review of the MiLB games, I have added my recaps at the end of the above post.
Both Scott and Yates have been okay so far but nothing more.
More was expected given their contracts and recent results. Way too many big hits given up by both.
The bats have gone into hibernation it looks.
Glassman to end the losing streak ? Keep the faith.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ooo, Glassnow is back, season is saved! (Hope you can see my tone). At least he’ll be back for a start or two before going out again. Too fragile, probably a mistake in extending him.
Gotta remember it’s a long season and these spells happen. Be interesting to see how Glasnow goes today.
Jeff, your post with the proposed trade for Skenes got me thinking. The more I think about it, the more I like it.
The Dodgers never get to draft players like Skenes because of their ongoing success so the only way to do do is via Free Agency or Trade.
So far Skenes looks like a generational talent , and an Ace of any staff. He’s also young and affordable, and once onboard would be a prime Extension Candidate. These players are not often available.
We give up Rushing who I like but is blocked by Will, De Paula who has potential but is still only a prospect and we have Hope and Sirota (not forgetting the opportunity to sign Tucker this off season). Sheehan I like, but he’s no Ace and has already had one TJ surgery – not a needle mover.
Ferris has potential but again only a Prospect and Freeland strikes me as another AAAA type of which we have a number. There’s no way all these guys reach the show and stick with LAD so I say it’s time to cash some in. Don’t forget Skenes isn’t a rental.
If I’m AF I’m on the phone this morning….
Because of how you feel, is why Pittsburgh would not do that deal. I also do not think AF would ever give up that much prospect capital for one player.
Right with you on this one Watford
Here’s how to rescue the Dodgees because when you watch them and there not hitting there pretty boring and the pitching well let’s just say has a starter had a complete game this season nope. Yet you watch other teams and there starters go into the 6th or 7th inning. If the Dodgers traded with the orioles and got Zach Eflin a starting pitcher and center fielder Cedric Mullins look how the Dodgers could change this second half. So Teoscar moves back to leftfield the Cedric moves into the every day centerfielder in rightfield you have Andy Pages and James outman and Tommy edman as your outfield letting go of Michael Conforto. Outfield then has enough pieces to rotate players. Now the infield you would have .Miguel Rojas at third until Muncy comes back or even put Edmans there dor his bat I the lineup. Betts at shortstop and Kim at secondbase and Freddie at first you still have kike and rushing that can play first to give Freddie some rest and the other guys the catcher is Smith and rushing. But that’s what I would do get those two guys and revamp this team improve the outfield with one everyday player in Mullins. The eflin give you a guy that can be like a 4th starter which you will need in the playoffs so you don’t have to do a bullpen game again this playoffs like last year.
I am not sure how either player actually improves the team.
Zach Eflin – 12 GS, 62.0 IP, 42 K, 5.95 ERA, 1.435 ERA, .310 BA against, and with a .315 BABIP, he is not pitching into bad luck. He is just a bad pitcher this year. He has a -0.4 bWAR. He is not a 6 or 7 IP pitcher. He is not a strikeout pitcher. He is not a productive pitcher.
The LAD #6, #7, #8 starting pitchers are better than Eflin.
Cedric Mullins – 295 PA – .211/.300/.410/.710, 100 OPS+, -0.3 bWAR
CF Defense metrics:
DRS – Pages +1, Mullins -17
OAA – Pages +4, Mullins +1
If the Dodgers do not want Edman in CF, they can find a much better option to replace Conforto in left and leave Pages in CF.
Mullins might be better in LF anyway. His arm isn’t that great–and Pages has transformed into a quality defender in center.
At any rate, I think it’s pretty clear that Mullins > Conforto.
Then again, I also think Outman and perhaps Ruiz would outplay Conforto if given the chance. Certainly he’d be an upgrade of defense–and would probably play a platoon/4th OF type.
So the brass might be content with their OF options. Or maybe they are shopping for an upgrade, which could include both Mullins and the O’s Ramon Laureano. Any others?
Maybe a full platoon of Outman and Ruiz. No for me on Mullins.
Guys,
I will be driving up north and attending the Dodgers/Giants game on Saturday afternoon. It’s my first time at Oracle Park, so if anyone has been up there before let me know. Going to be quite an adventure.
Then there’s also Taylor Ward and Tyler Anderson the Dodgers could go get from the Angels that would help the Dodgers. That would be a bettee tradr and a number 4 pitcher in the playoffs with Yamamoto Glasnow Ohtani Anderson Kershaw Snell as your starters in the playoffs little better the last year.
I always had a soft spot for Anderson because he pitched so well with the Dodgers and just seemed like a nice guy. Not sure how he’s doing this year.
San Fran is on the rebound Scott!
Enjoy the city.
Do you want food or drink recs?
Sure, if you have any.
Los Panchos on mission, burritos and street Mexican.
Brenda’s French Soul Food on Polk
La Boulangerie coffee and pastries.
For Chinese? Dragon Well iChestnut St.
Golden Boy pizza in North Beach. Goat Hill Pizza is a favorite of a co-worker.
For drinks?
For the Record on Fillmore has nice cocktails and music.
Can’t be The Snug on Fillmore.
This is a personal because i like both Jazz and Ethiopian food, but: Sheba Jazz Lounge
Finally, it’s pricey but has a view to kill for: Charmaine’s on Market
I’ll have to look those places up. I have no idea where anything is up there. I’ll be staying near fisherman’s wharf.
Also check out Keys Jazz Club and my favorite burger up there at Mission Bowlng Club
Oh. OK.
Golden Boy pizza rs right there, Dragon Well is close. There are tons of Boulangerie’s, so you can’t be far from it.
Beyond that, try to get to Brenda’s.
You’ll need to Uber/Waymo for drinks.
Thanks for the reccomendations guys. I’ll see how many of those I can check out.
An OF observation. Why is it that opposing teams OF dive for balls hit in front of them, and the Dodgers play it for a single. Edman hits a ball into LF and Collins dives and makes the catch. Yelich OTOH hits just about the same ball to LF and Ruiz let it drop in front of him. Ruiz has more speed but is not a good OF.
Just don’t seem very athletic on defense or on the base paths right now
Walk
Balk
Steal
Score
It’s poetry.
Pitiful offense so far in this series.
Top of the order sucking again. 0-11 with 2 walks. This is not an offense that is hitting on all cylinders. Smith and Freeman, two of the best with RISP< totally fail today.
I find it amusing that in the beginning of the year, in another mediocre period, people lamented the lack of production from the bottom of the lineup.
Now it’s the top of the order.
just shows that nobody, or no grouping, is immune from slumps.
All hitters slump but it is the length of the slumps by Betts, Freeman, and Teo that are concerning. Injuries have reduced the bottom of the line up to Rojas, Ruiz, Outman. Ouch. Once again, lack of position player depth in the system is a problem.
This is by far the longest I have ever seen Mookie and Freddie this bad. Ohtani is not lighting up the scoreboard either. Pages has tailed off a lot. Add that to Teo and Edman being injured and not producing, Muncy down, Kike down, and the pitching staff resembling the 62 Mets, the team has looked awful.
Just shocking to see Mookie and Freddie both look so feeble for so long. Hard to imagine a long October run without them. But on the bright side, good to have Glasnow back. If healthy we have a dominant starting rotation for post season
Freddie looks completely lost. Our $72 million dollar closer looks like dogshit. The Brewers closer make $1.94 and he carved up the Dodgers in the 10th with three k’s
i mean it was a broken bat fluke that drove the run on, so dogshit feels extreme.
BUT, Scott should be better.
Gotta miss bats when you close. Scott doesn’t do that with closer frequency.
He’s #2 in MLB with 6 blown saves. Not sure a dogshit reference is extreme.
Anomaly, Miggy is their best hitter right now.
A bit ironic that Mookie, moved to SS as an MLB middle-ager, is struggling less on defense than on offense.
So some people theorize that moving him back to RF might fix his bat.
I don’t buy it, and I doubt that the Dodgers do as well. Last season was a very different story: Mookie was pressed into SS duties and so he was struggling on defense. His move back to the OF enabled Edman and Rojas to cover the position. But now Mookie’s defense is solid.
So what should be done now?
Probably not much. Mookie might just be in a slump.
But perhaps his age is catching up with him. We just saw him turn a double into an out at third base, in part because he isn’t as swift as he used to be.
I’d propose a shakeup in the batting order as well as a tweak in the lineup.
How about this against RHP:
Shohei DH
Will C (highest BA and OBP in the league, with no appreciable split)
Freddie 1B
Pages CF
Mookie SS
Teo RF (if healthy)
Edman 3B (get well, Max!)
Rushing LF
Kim 2B
Rushing would still be Smith’s backup. If he shows he can play a decent LF, perhaps Feduccia could promoted as a 3rd catcher.
Wow! That one hurt. We’re in that whatever it takes to lose mode right now. Break can’t come soon enough.
Rushing.
Is.
Not.
A.
LF.
The club has said this.
The club has backed up their words with actions.
Please.
Stop.
Or, we could just move Smith to 3b
Never happen in season. Maybe after he does a bunch of work there in the offseason. But I don’t think that is happening anytime soon.
This is good/
Tigers announce Zach McKinstry is going to the All-Star Game
Our big bullpen acquisitions blow another one. Offense pathetic again.
Slumps happen. But to be swept by two first place teams is discouraging.
Milwaukee has Trevor Megill as their closer making $1,940,000 on an annual deal. Megill has converted 21 of 24 save opportunities.
OTOH, Tanner Scott is the LAD closer and has a $72MM obligation or $18MM per season and he has converted 18 of 24 save opportunities.
The six Brewer relievers used today are receiving a total salary of $8,632,304. The four LAD relievers are being paid actual salary this year of $28,802,087.
Brewers payroll for 2025 – $111,083,321 while the Dodgers actual payroll is $339,546,781.
You do not always get what you pay for. A while back I ran a list of maybe 10 – 12 relievers who are having better years and making less than $10MM. AF went against his MO by signing a reliever for 4 years and $72MM, plus another $13MM for Yates.

and those average ages are AFTER getting rid of Taylor and Barnes!
I think we all agree that if the Dodgers superstars don’t play like superstars, the Dodgers superstar centric strategy won’t work.
I’m not worried (or concerned), but I’m an optimist.
Kopech has meniscus surgery. Out for awhile. Now on 60 day IL.

DJ LeMahieu DFAd by the Yankees. Kopech had surgery on a torn meniscus.
Dodgers sent Berroa to Brewers for cash
Another extremely disappointing loss. Yates and Scott have not lived up to expectations thus far. Maybe Doc needs to throw a shit fit and shake up the lineup.
Yep, those best team in history statements seem extremely silly now.
Good news on a bad day, Treinen had a clean inning at OKC tonight. 12 pitches, 8 were strikes and he struck out 2. Davis threw 3 scoreless innings striking out 3 and allowing just 1 hit. Sublette relieved Davis. CJ Alexander, who was DFA’d on the 7th, is playing 1st tonight for OKC. Berroa traded to the Brewers for cash, Kopech undergoes meniscus surgery. Out until September at least.
Kopech on the IL was described as precautionary. Why am I not surprised?
Phillies Sign Phil Bickford To Minor League Deal
Got lucky tonight. Puds and Gnats both lost.
