Trade Deadline Review – Part 1

By the comments from trade deadline day, most everyone is disappointed.  I never expected the Dodgers to make a big trade, so I was not that disappointed.  Would I have liked for the Dodgers to trade for David Bednar?  Yes.  Would I have liked for the Dodgers to trade for Steven Kwan?  Yes.  Did I expect it?  No.

I always believed the Dodgers were going to acquire one of the high leverage RHRP – Brock Stewart/Dennis Santana/Phil Maton/Pierce Johnson/Louis Varland. Stewart, Maton, and Varland all get traded, with the Dodgers getting Stewart.  Any one of the 5 would have been acceptable to me, but Stewart could be the best of the group.  He owns RH batters.  7 hits in 67 AB, 1 HR, 3 BB, 29 K.  LH batters? Not so much. 19 hits, in 57 AB, 2 HR, 8 BB, 12 K.  Alex Vesia, Jack Dreyer, and Anthony Banda are very tough on LH batters. The big negative on Vesia and Banda were in the beginning of the season with their HR allowed.  Vesia has allowed 7 HR this year, none since 5/29.  Banda has allowed 6 HR, only 1 HR since 5/18.  Dreyer has only allowed 1 HR all year.

Is this a San Diego bullpen?  Not a chance.

Anyone who really believed that the Dodgers were actually going to trade for a closer like Jhoan Duran, Mason Miller, or David Bednar were not being realistic.  When was the last closer the Dodgers traded for at the deadline?  AF/BG committed $72MM to Tanner Scott, and he has been abysmal this year.  But he was lights out last year.  Everyone is expecting Mookie to return to his normal, but refuse to believe that Scott can return to his 2024/2023 self?

The big difference is that he is walking less, whiffing less, and big increase in exit velo.  He is too much around the plate and not inducing swing and miss. The pitches around the plate catch way too much of the plate.  How does he fix 2025 to be more like 2023 and 2024?  That is what the coaches have to figure out.  Is he capable of making the changes?  If you believe Mookie can get it back, why can’t Scott?  And AF/BG are counting on Scott being that closer.  If he does turn it around, will anyone miss Bednar, Duran, or Miller? Yeah, I am sure most of you will still wish the Dodgers had one of them.  But at what prospect capital cost?

LAD RP now and expected in return from injury:

  • Alex Vesia (L)
  • Brock Stewart (R) – Guessing that Wrobleski gets optioned
  • Ben Casparius (R)
  • Alexis Diaz (R)
  • Jack Dreyer (L)
  • Anthony Banda (L)
  • Kirby Yates (R)
  • Blake Treinen (R)

Due back – Michael Kopech and maybe Brusdar Graterol.  I am predicting that Kirby Yates could be on his way out when Kopech comes back.  I do not know who else would be a logical DFA, and only Dreyer, Casparius, and Diaz have options.

Others to be considered Paul Gervase, Edgardo Henriquez, Jack Little, José Rodríguez.  Again it is not the Padres bullpen, but it does have possibilities.  This is a better bullpen than the one that shut down San Diego, NYM, and NYY in bullpen games last playoffs.

Returning this year from the WS roster are Kopech, Treinen, Banda, Vesia, Casparius.  Those not back include: Hudson, Honeywell, Brasier, Graterol, Knack.

Choose between Kershaw, Scott, Dreyer, Stewart, Diaz, Wrobo, Henriquez, Graterol, Gervase, and Sheehan as the replacements.  I think we can find 5 relievers better than those not returning from last year’s WS team from that list.

Where the Dodgers can excel is SP.

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto
  • Tyler Glasnow
  • Shohei Ohtani
  • Clayton Kershaw
  • Blake Snell (Saturday)
  • Emmet Sheehan

The playoffs 4 figure to be Yamamoto, Glasnow, Ohtani, and Snell.

Pitching at their respective bests, the LAD rotation is superior to San Diego’s.

Now I understand that most are upset that Michael Conforto is still a LAD. But, for the month of July, Conforto had the 2nd best batting average (.273),  3rd best OPS (.827), and 3rd best wRC+ (132).  Smith is #1 in all three categories.  Rojas #2 in OPS and wRC+.  Yes that means Conforto had a better OPS and wRC+ than Shohei, Mookie, Freddie, Teo, Pages, Edman, and Kim.

So, sure, dump Conforto for Bader or Laureano.  But that does not dismiss the dismal July offense from the superstars.  Will Max help when he gets back?  Which of the superstars would you have traded, if they were even tradeable.  Would you have dumped Miggy Ro who was the 2nd best hitter in July, and probably the best defensive player.  Would you have dumped Hyeseong Kim? The Dodgers did not have any room to maneuver.  Mookie, Freddie, Smith, Edman, Teo, and Shohei are all on long term expensive contracts.

Alex Call will be an improvement over Outman this year.  Will Alex Freeland take over the backup infielder role over Kim?

Let’s be realistic, this team will struggle if the superstars continue to hit as they did in July.   This team will struggle if any of the SP break down.  Of course that is true for the Padres as well.  Will Darvish stay healthy?  Will Cease be as bad in the 2nd half as he was in the 1st half.  How much will O’Hearn, Laureano, and Fermin help the dismal offense.  The Padres are 22nd in MLB for OPS, 24th in runs, 29 in HR.

The Dodgers will improve their offense if the superstars improve slightly, but SD will need a lot of improvement.

Maybe Scott and Bradley and others will concede to San Diego.  I am not in that box.

Just get to the playoffs and I will take the LAD roster over any NL team.

Next part of my series will be how did the other teams improve, for 2025, and future.

And then, LAD traps.

Finally, I will miss Dustin May, Hunter Feduccia, and especially will miss James Outman.

I understand about being optimistic, but are the Dodgers now suddenly world beaters because they added Brock Stewart and Alex Call? It’s Brock Stewart, whom the Dodgers gave to the Blue Jay’s for next to nothing. Now he’s the second coming of Steve Howe?

Stewart should be a nice addition, he’s had a good season in Minnesota, and Call is definitely a better hitter than Outman, but they needed more than just Brock Stewart. who’s going to close games in October? Are you confident in Tanner Scott? Yates? Sure because they’ve both pitched so well this year.

The club still has one of the worst pitching staffs in the National League, they’ve been unable to string together wins since mid April. Can Glasnow and Snell stay healthy?

For the record I believe the Dodgers will win the NL West, but beyond that is a long shot with the pitching.

Dodgers could have gotten help and didn’t. A Jared Duran in leftfield oe centerfield would have helped or just a bettee bat then cinforti and yet they did nothing we have the same hitters as we did on Wednesday and Muncy comes back soon Oh boy. Mean while Padres get 4 new players and don’t worry about minor leaguers. And the Yankess too did a good job and hats off tithe Astros they all got better. And don’t forget Seattle.

Duran was not available, that is why he was not traded. Neither was Buxton or Kwan. Dodgers got help in the pen with Stewart. They did not want to pay the high price that the teams were receiving for the top relief arms. Call is an excellent outfielder and right now has better stats than Outman or Ruiz, batting .274 with 3 homers and 26 driven in. His OPS+ is 117. O’Hearn would not have fixed anything, he is a first baseman primarily. They could have gone after Laureano but did not. With Max coming back, that is almost like making a trade. He adds the lefty power they need. Price for Kwan was probably higher than they wanted to pay. Also, Diaz saved 75 games over the last 3 years with the Reds. They have a very good pitcher with closer experience on the roster already.

He sure looks like it. Staff made adjustments to his mechanics that seem to have worked. I saw him pitch at OKC a couple of times, and he has looked better with the big club than he did down there. 3 scoreless innings allowing just 2 hits.

You and I both know that Freidman does not overpay. Padres did. Why he does things the way he does, I do not know. But maybe he has things in the works for this offseason. What I do know is that the powers that be with the Dodgers think with the players that they have returning, they are a better team. The odds makers think so too. Prospects are suspects until they aren’t. I probably would have loved to see them get at least one top reliever, but AF and Gomes did not want to pay what they would cost. Every trade scenario I saw involving Kwan, had the Guardians wanting Rushing as part of the package. Would you trade Rushing knowing you really do not have much in the way of catchers at AAA? They all have MLB experience, this is true, but none of them are that great with the bat or on defense.

I think Friedman overpaid for Conforto, and probably for Scott and Yates as well.
He overpays with the checkbook because he can, and he is stingy with human collateral.
Both Kwan and Mason Miller were worthy targets.
Why not include Rushing? Right now he’s a backup catcher who seems to have a bright future. Could he push Will Smith over to 3B or 1B? Or, alternatively, is he the guy who might succeed Max or Freddie?
Maybe, but maybe not. Rushing may be Smith’s backup for the next 2-4 years.
So a backup catcher (even a good one) is certainly expendable if it means getting a 27-year-old all-star, Gold Glove everyday outfielder or a young, controllable reliever who might be the game’s best closer.
So while I would have prefered a bigger splash, the acquisitions of Stewart and Call are solid moves. And that 6-10 RP seems interesting too.
But I’ll be less impressed with AF’s deadline moves if Mason Miller mows down the Dodgers in the postseason. I’ll be lamenting that he had kept Miller away from the Padres.

My question is this: If the prospects are too valuable to trade for relief pitching, yet are blocked at the big league level by all the veterans, then what’s their value? What’s their role? To sit in the minors for years and never get a chance?

Why not move Rushing? He’s blocked. If Rushings future for the next 5-6 years is to be Will Smiths backup and play once or twice per week, then why not move him for an impact MLB player? We don’t know exactly what the Guardians wanted for Kwan, but if they did ask for Rushing, why not move him and let Feduccia be the backup catcher?

Last year Friedman had his best trade deadline with the Dodgers. He moved prospects for 3 impact players that helped the Dodgers win the World Series. Why not move a few prospects this year?

It’s not about overpaying. Nobody wants to overpay, we all get that. But if the prospects are never going to see the light of day in a Dodger uniform then there is no reason to hold onto them.

What’s the role of the prospects if they can’t be called up, yet management won’t use them as trade chips?

Both Kwan and Miller would have been big factors for the Dodgers through the ’28 season…
I just think Preller is more of a gambler than Friedman. And he has to be, because he doesn’t have such big pile of chips to work with.
DeVries might be great. He also might be Wander Franco.
Padres fans are right to be excited.

I love venting and this place is a good place to vent. (thanks for that), but can’t there be a middle ground here? I’m suggesting the Dodgers move a few prospects to acquire pitching help, not gut the farm. Why is it when someone suggests making a few moves it’s automatically “gutting the farm”.

Certainly the team could have parted with a couple of prospects to pick up a good closer. Especialy when those prospects will never play in a Dodger uniform.

“Would you have traded 2 of Hope, De Paula, Quintero, or Sirota, and Ferris Jackson?”

maybe. Depends on who they are being traded for and if any of those guys have a chance at all at playing for the Dodgers. Their value is whatever the other team is willing to pay for them. Are any of those guys generational talents? If not then I think it’s fair to say that trading one or two for a good closer is worth the risk. Maybe one of those guys becomes an All-star? So what? I think the Dodgers should be able to acquire more prospects, these guys are not irreplaceable.

In regards to trading Rushing, and or Feduccia, you can trade one, but not trade both. I think you pick one and trade the other, which they did. but keeping Rushing as a backup for another 4-5 years is kind of odd to me.

I find it interesting that now all of a sudden, people are falling in love with Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates and Michael Conforto. I think we’ve seen what those guys have already, and they all suck.

Yes I know Conforto has been playing better over the last several weeks. It’s more about the pitching staff and the lack of quality options at closer, and late innings. Dodger’s staff ranks 21st in Earned runs allowed, the bullpen ranks 23rd in earned runs allowed.

What season do you think is more important? The one this year in 2025? or the 2030 season? Maybe some of those prospects won’t be blocked by 2030, and will be ready to come up.

We don’t know what their plan is for Rushing. Maybe they move Smith to third after Muncy’s deal is up next year. And right now, any season after 26 is in question. They get paid a helluva lot more than I do to make those decisions. We as fans, don’t have to like them, and many times we do not understand them. Flynn for Rosario was hardly moving a prospect, he was 27 years old, more a suspect. Albertus and Perez, the two kids that they traded along with Vargas for Kopech and Edman, are hardly top of the line prospects. Both are still in A ball. Gonzalez, the 17-year-old kid they got back along with Edman is in the developmental league. Vargas was not a prospect when he was traded. Sweeny had come over from the Yankees and wasn’t going to crack the Dodger roster. Liranzo was about the only plus talent they traded. He is hitting just .231 at AA. All those questions you ask, maybe you should write AF a letter and voice your concerns.

I know you don’t have the answer to my questions Bear and that’s ok. No disrespect at all, I’m just asking the questions to stimulate discussion.

I keep hearing everyone talk about “overpaying”. Everyone is saying here that the Padres “overpaid”. How do we know this? What’s the value of a good MLB reliever? It’s whatever the other team is willing to give up for him. Is a good MLB reliever worth 1-2 minor league prospects? I think so. If not then what are they worth?

maybe you could make an argument about a can’t miss prospect, a Corey Seager quality prospect, but otherwise What’s the point of holding those prospects if they are blocked at the major league level?

Either play the prospects, and if you can’t then you should use them as trade chips to improve the MLB roster. Otherwise they have no use other than filling the OKC roster. If the Dodgers gave up so little last year to get Flaherty, Kopech, Edman then why couldn’t they do it again this year?

I think we are focusing on the wrong questions here. It shouldn’t be about overpaying. Baseball and all sports are a risk business IMO. If you don’t want to make a move because you are afraid of overpaying then you probably should find some other line of work. That’s like getting a full house dealt to you and then folding.

Im not saying the Dodgers should move every prospect, but keeping prospects that have no path to the majors for the next 5 plus years because “the price is too steep” doesnt make sense to me.

Also Smith is not going to be playing third base next Year, even you have said that to multiple posters over here. Muncy isn’t going anywhere until Freeland shows he can handle himself in the bigs. Just some thoughts here.

I totally get it. It would be interesting to be in the war room and see exactly what they were thinking. But I have to believe they held on to Rushing because Will Smith is not going to spend the next 8 years as a catcher, and Rushing is better than what they have in the minors.

I agree with your take on prospects. in my opinion it’s always about this year. If we need to use assets to improve this year’s team, by all means do so.

Preller does what he does to keep pace with LA. And I think he’s damm good at doing just that. The Athletic gave him an A for his moves this year. I do too.

“Anyone who really believed that the Dodgers were actually going to trade for a closer like Jhoan Duran, Mason Miller, or David Bednar were not being realistic.” JD

Well that’s me. I wanted the best reliever available and I wanted Kwan. The Padres are moving up on us and they just got better. Did we? I don’t know. Maybe.

“Let’s be realistic, this team will struggle if the superstars continue to hit as they did in July.  This team will struggle if any of the SP break down.” JD

I couldn’t agree more. The Dodgers are counting on their first string players to play as they are paid to play. They do they win. They don’t they won’t.

That was the ask. And what happened? Nothing of course. The ask will always be ridiculously high.

I have no idea what was offered by AF, but obviously not enough for Cleveland to let go of an important player in their push for a Wild Card spot.

I asked a couple of times if anyone thought Cleveland was going to be sellers and nobody responded. Frankly I didn’t think they would be. Why? They are still in it, they may feel they owe it to Ramirez, and they already have several prospects that need to get their rostrums wet if they did drop out of contention.

“Would you have been willing to include De Paula/Hope/Ferris Jackson/+ for Kwan?”

Nope. But I might have offered 2+. And who knows, maybe they did. But instead of 4 WAR everyday left fielder we got a 2 WAR platoon outfielder, which may be exactly what this team needs.

For the doom and gloomers, last year the first game after the trade deadline the Dodgers were 63-46 the same as this year. They had a 4.5 game lead and this amazingly powerhouse lineup
Ohtani DH
Smith C
Lux 2B
T Hernández RF
Biggio 1B
E Hernández 3B
Kiermaier CF
Amed SS
bench was Rosario, Pages, Outman, Barnes.

I think I like the odds this year a whole lot better. I know it’s cliche but we have no idea of what is going on behind the scenes. We don’t know who is healthy, the extent of an injury, when someone is coming back. We don’t know what the ask was for any of the relievers that were traded. We know what the return was but that doesn’t mean the Dodgers could or should have met it.

I also think Friedman is more comfortable with using arms in leverage situations instead of a designated closer. I think he’s willing to use a closer by committee as the best way to win

OKC pulled out a win in 10 innings, 6-5. Romero and Rodriguez gave up the 5 runs by the 5th inning. The Comets scored 2 in the 7th, 2 in the 9th and 1 in the 10th for the win. Kopp, Carlson and Little, who got his 4th win, kept the Bees scoreless. Senzel hit his 9th homer. Ramos and Hoese were the only Comets with multiple hits. Muncy was not in the lineup. Ward was 0-5. Tulsa also won in 10 innings, 4-3. Myers was the only Driller with 2 hits. Cabrera got the win. Rancho won big, 9-3. Guererro had a 3-run homer.

Well, now that the dust has settled over the 2025 trade deadline.the NL West has gotten a lot more difficult to win for the Dodgers.
Padres have LOADED up. Preller absolutely has outdone himself by going crazy bringing in 7 new players for thier big league roster. 7!
That roster looks a lot better now than before. Their pen is frightening.

Headlined by probably the best closer in the game. I was hoping we could get Miller or Doran or Bednar because the Dodgers with Scotts struggles surely are lacking this shutdown 1-2-3 closer.

But obviously AF and company are hoping that Scott will return to his old self of previous years. Lets hope they are correct.

Stewart is a nice addition as is Calls but both no needle movers.

Trading May was a numbers game and it was not that he was overpowering , plus he will be a free agent too.

My prediction; I fear the Padres will win the West and the Dodgers will go the WC route.
As we know everything is possible in the playoffs once you reach them.
A WS between Yankees and Padres would not surprise me.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!

If all the players get healthy, and yes, that is a big if, LA’s offense is still better than the Padres. Nothing you can do about their pen, except, jump all over their starters and negate the relievers. LA also has a guy in the pen right now who saved 75 games over the lest 3 years in Cincnnati, that is more than Phillips has saved, and he has looked good since he came up from AAA. Alexis Diaz. Call is an excellent defender, right up there with Outman, and at this juncture, he is a better hitter. Stewart is a very good back end of the pen piece, something they needed. Preller mortgaged his team’s future. Outside of Miller, none of those guys scare you. O’Hearn and Laureano have to adjust to the league, and sometimes it isn’t that easy. Look how much Machado fell off from what he was in Baltimore when he came to LA. His BA dipped 35 points. The Dodgers are getting a 30-homer guy back, and he cost them nothing.

Dodgers have 53 games lest and Padres don’t play the Dodgers after August 24th. Here is their schedule. TB-3, At LA, St L, 3, Tor-3. 3 at LAA, 3 in LA against SD. 4 in Colorado and 3 at SD, those are the last games they play against the Padres. The next 6 are against the Reds and D-Backs in LA. They go on the road for 6 in Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Then 3 at home against the Rockies. 3 on the road at SF, then home for the final homestand against the Phillies for 3 and The Giants for 4. They finish on the road with 3 in Arizona, and 3 in Seattle. Padres are hitting .250 as a team with 92 homers and 445 runs scored. Team ERA is 3.56. Remember, they traded two starting pitchers, Kolek and Bergert. Dodgers are hitting .255 as a team and have 163 homers. They have scored 568 runs. LA is 4-2 against the Padres this year. Last year they were 5-8. Team ERA is 4.24. We have used 37 pitchers this year, but many of the really bad ones are no longer in the organization.

Fabian wrote this in the athletic “

”The biggest truth might be this: Even had the Dodgers managed to pry Steven Kwan from the Guardians or swung the deal to get Jhoan Duran instead of Stewart from the Twins, nothing shifts the Dodgers’ chances of being baseball’s first repeat champs in 25 years more than their existing stars figuring it out.””

tedraymond

Another trade deadline completed. I was not surprised either about the lack of any impact players coming the Dodgers way.

When the Dodgers played the Twins recently and Brock Stewart made an appearance I was surprised at his velo in the high 90’s. I remember it being in the 92-93 range when he was a Dodger. He’s had some shoulder issues last year and once this year. So, that plays into AF’s wheelhouse.

Hopefully, the trades of James Outman and Hunter Feduccia will help them advance their careers. The Dustin May trade verified that the Dodgers had no interest in resigning him. With Snell returning he wasn’t going into stay in the rotation. And, I don’t think he has the mental makeup to be an effective reliever. Probably the most disappointed player at OKC….Ryan Ward. The Rodney Dangerfield of the Dodgers’ system.

The term “overpay” has been used quite a bit concerning AF’s inclination not to overpay in trades. Especially, for relief pitchers. Yet he refuses to allow them to be promoted to the Dodgers. So, like Scott states, what’s the point? I’ve been commenting on this for years. The Dodgers system is usually highly ranked by the “experts”. Their “depth” is constantly being heralded. Yet, most of the time there is an injury to a player they go diving into the dumpster section of the free agent market instead of calling one of their own. I mean, guys no one has ever heard of and are around for an appearance or two and then are released. So, AF is adamant about not using his top prospects in a major trade. Why? He doesn’t have a problem wildly overpaying with Guggenheim’s money in free agency.

This highly paid veteran team has to get and stay healthy for the remainder of the baseball year. Mookie, Freddie, Teoscar, Conforto, Muncy, and Edman have to start producing offensively or it doesn’t matter who the closer is, who’s playing centerfield or what the projected rotation will be in the postseason.

Right now and for the past couple of months this team is underachieving and not entertaining to watch. Especially, against teams they could meet in the playoffs. With the lack of moves at the deadline by the front office they could be thinking the same thing. AF committed over $300MM in free agency to players who have contributed minimally to the success of the team.

Carry on.

I think you’re right.

The leader of this staff is Yamamoto. Can he last until November? Good question. I still think a few starts off would help him. Snell only has to pitch every 5th day until the end of October. Same with Glasnow. How many starts is that? 15 maybe? That’s a rough estimate. I could be way off. Neither are likely to go more than 5 innings per, so, 75 innings? Can they do it? Maybe with help from Stewart and Kopech they can.

What was true early will be true late. The Dodgers have score and score big.

My “almost expecting” was a way to hedge my bets. Ohtani needs to show me he still has elite stuff, and I think he will. Glasnow is my biggest concern. I consider him both physically and mentally too fragile to be a SP by the playoffs.

The way I look at it (which is completely opposite of the negative, world-is-ending types):

1) Freddie’s swing the last week has looked much better so after 2 months of crap, I see it as we just traded for the 2024 World Series MVP for the rest of the year.

2) Mookie CANNOT continue to be this bad, so I see it as we traded for Mookie Betts for the next 8 weeks plus Oct

3) Max was horrible for 2 months, great for 6 weeks, and then got hurt. I see it as we traded for Max Muncy for the last 6 weeks of the year to get ready for Oct

4) Conforto was beyond horrific for 3 months, but seems to have woken up in July. I see it as he is more likely to hit .250 going forward than .180. Pus this Call dude will be joining him in LF

5) Teo was great for 2 months, got hurt ,and then bad for July (as was everyone else). I see it as we traded for Teoscar Hernandez to play RF or LF for the rest of the year

6) Tommy Edman was great for a month with 10 hr thru April, and then has been hurt and crappy ever since. I see it as we traded for Tommy Edman 2024 and he’ll become a catalyst again

7) Tyler Glasnow had a 3 month paid vacation, but has looked quite good since he returned. I see it as we traded for a #4 starter with #1 ability going forward

8) Blake Snell signed a huge contract that apparently came with a 4 month paid vacation, but he’s due back tomorrow. I see it as we traded for Blake Snell at the trade deadline, which is basically acquiring the best player available at the trade deadline

9) Brock Stewart is a gigantic improvement over the Castillo, Klein, Trevino, etc types.

10) Yates has terrible, and I see it as…… I have no faith in this guy. His stuff just looks like he lost it

11) Tanner Scott is the most important of all. IF he regains what he was in in 2023 and 2024, we got one of the best relievers in baseball. I think he’s the key to the entire thing. I don’t know how many religions we have in this group, but let’s use them all to pray that he finds it again for 3 months.

Man just think it waa Bear that said no way Correa would be traded from twins how much of a change that would have been for the Dodgers to get him to play shortstop then move mookie back to rightfield and teoscar to leftfoeld and Pages stay in centefoeld with Muncy coming back at third.now that would have made me feel more comfortable then having Conforto and his useless bat. Just shows Astros Padres and Mariners when they see a missing piece they go and get ut and see uf ut works. The Astros are going to be tough now and the Phillies too.

Correa to the Dodgers is blasphemy. He is not allowed to be a Dodger. He’s a lying and cheating piece of garbage. There are several people who are not worthy to ever wear a Dodger uniform and he’s one of them.

Bradley, quit twisting what I said. I said he would NEVER BE TRADED TO THE DODGERS. And he wasn’t. He is not going to play SS for the Astro’s. He is going to play 3rd base. They have a SS, Pena. Mookie is NOT MOVING BACK TO RIGHT FIELD PERIOD. And it has nothing to do with him being a cancer or not wanting to. You miss the point completely. Betts is third in the league in defensive runs saved. A much better SS than he was last year. Conforto has been one of the more consistent Dodgers over the last month. He hit .273 in July, one of the better hitters on the team with 3 homers. His OPS for the month was .827. Call is a right-handed better version of Outman. He is hitting .273 for the year, AND he can play all 3 outfield positions. Stewart is a solid back of the bullpen arm. I never said Correa would not be traded, I simply said he would never be a Dodger. Astros picked up all of the 96 million he is owed. He also has 4 years of team options. AF was never going to take that contract on. Freidman and the Dodgers fine-tuned the roster. Unlike the fans, they did not feel the team needed a major overhaul, and he did not do any knee-jerk moves to counter what the Padres did. Despite all of the injuries, and bad performances, the team is still in first place. If they lose and do not go to the playoffs, then you guys can roast AF all you want. He is in a much better position to determine the teams needs than any of us.

Don’t mean to piss in your soup Bear but Mookie is also on pace for his lowest WAR total since his rookie season. And that includes the shortened season. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

I have no idea on the details of Mookie’s step father passing away but I’m guessing he was going through an extended illness that was having an impact on his play. After he joined the team in Boston he started to have some better at bats. I think it has been a combination of his illness at the start of the season, his step father and the grind of playing short every day. They have Rojas and Freeland on the roster and Mookie should get a day off once a week to keep him fresh as possible. Same for Freddie get him a day off once a week

Players have down years and down months. It’s not like fans aren’t showing up and the team doesn’t have a chance to win every night or the WS. Mookie should be fine down the stretch.

I believe you said the twins would not trade Correa that is what I was saying. He could have gone to dodgers but see the Astros did more when they were allready good. So if your good then you become better. Thats my complaint. I’d rather have Ryan Ward up as the fourth outfielder at least he can put it in the stands on one swing like pinch hitter off the bench. Never heard of Call drom the Nationals.

Michael Norris

Reply to  Bradley Lawton

I did not say that. I have an excellent memory. Naturally you have never heard of Call. He is a complementary type of player. He is an excellent defensive outfielder. He does not have a lot of power, but he is a contact hitter. Something Outman was not. Ward has proved nothing except he feasts on AAA pitching. I wish LA had traded him so he could at least get a chance. He is NOT on the 40-man roster. You must understand that the powers that be do not see the same things you do, otherwise, he would be on the roster instead of Ruiz. One last thing about Correa. He was and never will be a Dodger. Besides the fact that he is owed so much money, he is despised by Dodger fans for his part in the 2017 World Series cheating scandal. Haven’t you heard the boos when he came up to hit when the Twins were in town??? You said you watch every game. There must be a reason why they boo him right? Pinch hitters rarely hit home runs. There are no guarantees Ward would be any different.

Ryan Ward has never been tested against ML pitching.

Frankly, I wish AF had tossed him in the May or Feduccia deals, if only to give him a better chance to be a DH/1B option for a small market team.

Just playing devil’s advocate here, but wasn’t there several people over here wanting to call up Ryan Ward? I believe it was a “free Ryan Ward” movement.

Is that gone now because of Call?

Just wondering about the suddent change of direction.

The whole point was me saying the Astros needed something they went and git Correa to play third base. The Padres needed pieces they went and git players but the dodgers could have gotten a bettee shortstop then moved mookie to rightfield but they didn’t and I am telling you his hitting is effected by playing shortstop then the outfield. They could have done that and I waa pointing out bear said the twins would never trade Correa well they did. When I brought ut up yes I said dodgers should get him becauee he is a good defensive shortstop that’s when Betts waa having problem throwing the ball. Just I would have liked to see the outfield get better and the bench for the playoffs.

Michael Norris

Reply to  Bradley Lawton

His hitting has been affected by first, his illness, and second, the injury to his toe. He played SS exclusively last year until his hand got broke. Do you know what he was hitting last year when he went down? He was hitting .307, with a .900 OPS. He had 10 homers. I told you once, and I will say it again, I did not say the Twins would not trade Correa. I said he would not get traded to the Dodgers. Jeff pointed out to you, and obviously you did not read his post, that Betts is having a much better defensive year than Correa. The Dodgers did not feel they needed a better SS. Correa will never be a Dodger. And Jeff pointed out to you the reasons why. The Dodgers added what they felt they needed. Not what us fans want. The outfield got better. Call is an excellent defender and a bat to ball guy. Trust me, none of us fans know better than the guy running the team. Mookie is not moving back to right, and it has nothing to do with him being selfish. It is where he and the team want him to be. If he does move, and it won’t happen this season, it might be to second base if they A. sign a free agent SS, or B. put Freeland or Miller there when he is ready. You have Max coming back this week, and Kike somewhere down the line. The bench is just fine. By the way, most Dodger fans could care less what Houston does. Just means they still have two cheaters on the team now, Correa and Altuve, instead of one.

News from Internet: Trade Deadline edition

<Editor’s Note: Please read the first response from the Longenhagen chat, it deals with Future Value, which has been a great point of discussion>

Ardaya’s comprehensive recap of the trade deadline
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6528713/2025/07/31/dodgers-trade-deadline-takeaways/

“On the position player front, the team spent much of Thursday attempting to pry outfielder Steven Kwan from the Cleveland Guardians. The asking price was steep – Leo De Vries, the headliner of the Padres’ package for Miller, was the starting point for the Guardians’ ask for Kwan, according to a league source. The club’s interest in the St. Louis Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan never gained steam in trade talks…”

Future Dodgers with a fun observation:
https://x.com/FutureDodgers/status/1951103353083043883

Longenhagen’s post-draft chat:

Eric Longenhagen 2025 Trade Deadline Prospects Chat

Perkins How much variability do you understand to exist with teams internal grades of prospects? Are there essentially always simultaneous 45, 50 and 55 grades on the same guy if you could peer into every FO? Would there often, or ever be a 40 and 55 grade on the same guy?

Eric A Longenhagen In some cases there is quite a bit of variability. I’ve had scouts or execs read me reports (not verbatim, just the grades) from two or three different scouts who aren’t on the same page at all. I’ve had people tell me the public rankings are a much bigger part of their model than we realize because teams view it as a crowd sourcing exercise since (especially BA and pipeline) we’re collecting opinions from a bunch of scouts and publishing it.

It’s why pro cross checkers can be important, to settle on which one is right.

J36T How much stock do you put in to a prospect like DeVries getting dealt? Is this Preller doing what he does and ultimately trying to keep his job, or do the Padres see something in DeVries that lowers their range of outcomes compared to the rest of the evaluators? Asking this specifically because you are a touch lower than others on his ceiling.

Eric A Longenhagen I think it’s probably some of both. The Padres are happy to tell the prospect-writing world their players are great and knowingly have the Robby Snellings of the world overrated as a way of inflating their value in the public consciousness. They’ve also traded James Wood. I think they like Leo a lot, they invested a ton of time into landing him and I think learned from the way they pushed Ethan too much and hurt his dev.

Blerg Any info on why Josue de Paula was put on IL?

Eric A Longenhagen Not off the top but I’ll work on getting that as chat progresses.

Fredo Florentino and Eduardo Quintero tore up A ball and getting a lot of buzz. Since they don’t make the 50FV cut (yet) ,what’s your take on them?

Eric A Longenhagen Watched Quintero play CF when I updated the hondo and don’t think he can end up there. For Josue De Paula it’s a strained hammy btw, I was told it shouldn’t be long, like two weeks.

Dust in May The Dustin May trade has to be the biggest overpay right? I don’t even think the prospects are that good, but for an injury-prone 5 ERA pitcher who blew past his career high in IP two months ago, it’s an amazing haul. Wow.

Eric A Longenhagen I think the optics of it are weird because of Tibbs/Devers.
Dusty is talented, More than Tibbs, imo.

Rob What’s your general take on AJ Preller’s philosophy to team-building? Net positive, negative?

Eric A Longenhagen It’s fun as hell. I don’t think it can truly be sustained without eventually having to knock the entire thing down, and he puts himself at risk of being let go when the time comes to do that, but also who would you rather root for: Sustainability Core Team X, or the Padres? I’d be frustrated if I were a Guardians fan, we’re always just fine. They have great people working there but at some point your approach needs to lean toward urgency more than value.

Guest Does a prospect getting traded multiple times in succession (such as James Tibbs III) raise any red flags about internal evaluations or can it be chalked up to circumstance?

Eric A Longenhagen Given the Devers of it all, this one feels like a weird situation, and I don’t think differently about Tibbs because of it.

Dan Szymborski uses a computer to evaluate the trade deadline:

ZiPSing Up the Trade Deadline: 2025 Edition

According to the ZiPS projections, the biggest winner here is the Padres … as well as the fact that the Dodgers, while picking up some good prospects, didn’t really improve their current roster significantly.

Dodgers fall under “…puzzled us…”

“…It wasn’t a bad day for the sport’s most talent-rich team—just an underwhelming one, relative to the speculation and considering the roster’s current injury load. The Dodgers didn’t get worse. They just didn’t get noticeably better…”

Dustin Nosler at Dodgers Digest on the Dodgers roster post trade-deadline:

Looking at the Dodgers’ roster following an active, yet unspectacular trade deadline

“So, it seems the Dodgers are banking on health and improved performance in the second half. With the amount of talent, it’s hard to argue against that strategy … That and a full 40-man roster limited their options to add. Sure, they could have paid the asking price for guys like Steven Kwan or Luis Robert Jr., but Andrew Friedman and Friends didn’t feel it was the right call.”

Michael Baumann on the Brock Stewart trade:

Various Relievers Get Traded To Various Clubs in Various Combinations

“And speaking of the 40-man roster, moving Outman clears a spot there for Stewart. It’s an inauspicious end for a player who once looked like the Dodgers’ center fielder of the future; as a rookie in 2023, he hit 23 home runs, stole 16 bases, and posted 3.9 WAR and a 116 wRC+. Unfortunately, the juice in Outman’s bat is no longer worth the squeeze of his strikeout rate…”

Who out there would trade our roster with any other teams roster. I realize it’s the weekend and people may have started indulging. Sure someone can nitpick and choose a position or two where other teams have some players but we have the best 26 and 40 man roster in MLB. That doesn’t necessarily mean a world championship but I like our odds against any other teams roster even after the trade deadline. Someone mentioned that they wondered if Kershaw will be on the post season playoff roster. If he isn’t I will refuse to watch any game. I’m sure that will scare the front office :).

Little groggy tonight, pill I had to take making me woozy. Padres DFAd Tyler Wade. Pressley was released by the Cubs. Padres are beating the Cardinals who are depleted with a couple of injuries. They have made 3 errors tonight. Miller in his first game with the Padres gave up 2 hits, no runs and struck out 1. Laureano started, O’Hearn PH. Neither had a hit in the game. George stole 5 bases tonight in the Loons win. He now has 63. Muncy ofer at OKC with 1 K.

Cool, that means Muncy must be ready, he only struck out once and ofered. Can’t wait, will it be the first 2 months Muncy or the last 6 weeks Muncy? I guess the question should be, how many did he leave on base to judge if he’s truly ready. If he could have just hit a solo home run in a blowout we would know for sure.
