Waaaaayyyyy To Early Peek at 2026

Projected LAD SP in the organization:

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto (R)
  • Shohei Ohtani (R)
  • Blake Snell (L)
  • Tyler Glasnow (R)
  • Roki Sasaki (R)
  • Emmet Sheehan (R)
  • Justin Wrobleski (L)
  • Ben Casparius (R)
  • Gavin Stone (R)
  • River Ryan (R)
  • Jackson Ferris (L)
  • Peter Heubeck (R)

That is 12 projectable SP who could be starting for LAD at some point in 2026.

I expect Ben Casparius to return to relief, although he could be a trade candidate for a team looking for a back end SP.  Does Justin Wrobleski have more value as a LHRP for LAD, or as a trade option to a team that needs mid rotation help from a lefty.

We have no idea how Gavin Stone (Shoulder) and River Ryan (TJ) will return from their season ending surgeries.  However both will have had more than ample time to recover and have a full off season of ramping up. The Dodgers will have to be overwhelmed to part with either pitcher.  It is also possible that River Ryan could be another late inning high leverage relief candidate.

Gavin Stone was a fixture in the 2024 LAD rotation and figures to get a shot to reclaim his spot.  He will have 16 months post-surgery leading up to ST. Regarding his shoulder surgery:

Multiple Dodgers pitchers have undergone shoulder surgeries over the past two years, and Stone revealed his operation was a blend of what Clayton Kershaw and Brusdar Graterol had corrected.

“It’s literally a mixture of both. They did quite a bit, but it feels great,” Stone said. “Feels healthy right now. I’ll start throwing in about a month. Haven’t had any setbacks yet, so hopefully it continues to be good.

“The capsule was a big thing. I don’t necessarily know what happened, but the capsule was being scraped by the bone, or something like that. And they did a partial labrum and partial rotator as well. Basically a new shoulder. Just trying to get healthy right now and get stronger is the main aspect.”

Tony Gonsolin has no trade value, and is not expected to be able to pitch until early August..  It is more likely that Gonsolin will be non-tendered and he will become a FA.  There might be teams who could put together a 2-year deal heavy loaded for year 2. If he is willing to work his way back to a MLB roster he could sign a MiLB deal and look to come back and have a good final 2 months and set himself up for FA in 2027.  Regardless, I do not see Tony as a LAD in 2026.

Kyle Hurt has been transitioned to late inning high leverage relief already, and will earn approximately MLB minimum.  I see him breaking camp with the Dodgers as a reliever in 2026.

Michael Grove was being transitioned to a full time relief role, and his expected salary will be around MLB minimum, so he should be retained.

I did not include LHSP Adam Serwinowski, although he was a late season promotion to AA.  I assume the Dodgers could look at him as they did Emmet Sheehan in 2023, giving the Dodgers another option (if needed).

I also did not include Landon Knack as I do not see a path to LAD either as a SP or RP for him.  His best value would be as part of a package in a trade.  He does have value, just not enough to be a headliner.

The Dodgers do not NEED another SP, but who here would say no to Paul Skenes or Tarik Skubal?  Not that they are in any way coming to LAD (or any other team IMO), but that means that fans may be open to the idea of adding a strong SP making their roster of capable mid to back end starters available in a trade.  I do not see them signing any FA SP, but perhaps a pitcher in the Kris Bubic or Nick Lodolo tier could be available.  Both have been mentioned as possible trade options.

Would the Dodgers consider Freddy Peralta?  Bubic’s and Lodolo’s projected salaries would be more in line with what I think the Dodgers would want to pay.  Yes, I know both Bubic and Lodolo have had injury concerns, but the Dodgers are the one team that has the depth to hide a front line pitcher with an injury concern. Peralta’s option is probably too much for LAD who again do not need that front line starter.

Let me be clear, I am not advocating this.  It is just a case of…sure I could see the Dodgers acquiring another SP, it just at what tier.

The Dodgers will once again look to revamp their bullpen.

  • Tanner Scott (L)
  • Brusdar Graterol (R)
  • Brock Stewart (R)
  • Blake Treinen (R)
  • Alex Vesia (L)
  • Anthony Banda (L)
  • Jack Dreyer (L)
  • Will Klein (R)
  • Kyle Hurt (R)
  • Edgardo Henriquez (R)
  • Bobby Miller (R)
  • Paul Gervase (R)
  • Ben Casparius (R)
  • Justin Wrobleski (L)
  • Michael Grove (R)
  • José Rodriguez (R) – Rule 5 candidate – Do not expect to be protected

I may be in the minority, but I see Tanner Scott coming back to show he is the elite closer the Dodgers signed.  I also expect Blake Treinen to return to his pre-injury self.

Kyle Hurt will get some looks as a RHRP/closer potential, because of his swing and miss abilities.

Brusdar Graterol will return and should lock down a late inning high leverage job, but not as a closer.  He induces ground balls, more than Ks.  He would be an ideal 8th inning setup reliever.

Brock Stewart will fall into the Graterol role as well.  Edgardo Henriquez’s control is a problem for him in a settled high leverage role.  But if he can harness his “stuff” he could be in that role as well.

Jack Dreyer and Alex Vesia will be late inning relievers from the left side, while Anthony Banda will be more of a 6th/7th inning guy.

Will Klein, Ben Casparius, and Justin Wrobleski will be middle relief, with Casparius and Wrobleski as swing pitchers.

I have no expectations for Bobby Miller.  I suspect he probably has more value as a trade option rather than as RHRP for LAD.

The Dodgers will have a deadline trade pickup next year as Evan Phillips should be ready to return by the deadline.

I fully expect AF/BG to scour the waiver wires and trade options for additional relief help.  I do not think there is any chance they pay for an Edwin Diaz, Robert Suarez, Raisel Iglesias, Ryan Helsley, or Devin Williams.  I could see AF/BG trying to re-sign Michael Kopech on an incentive laden pillow contract so that he could try and increase his value for a 2027 FA.  There are dozens of potential relievers who the Dodgers could sign for 1 year.  If anyone on this site can correctly predict who will be the elite relievers from the long, long, long, list of FA relievers, apply for a front office job with any of the 30 MLB teams.

Dark horse closer…River Ryan.

There are multiple MiLB pitches who could conceivably stick in the bullpen.  With relievers you just never know:  Ronan Kopp, Chris Campos, Nick Frasso, Ryan Sublette, Logan Boyer, Christian Romero…

It is more than conceivable that the Dodgers will have a bullpen commensurate with 2024.

Trade candidates: Emmet Sheehan, Landon Knack, Bobby Miller, Ben Casparius, Justin Wrobleski, Nick Frasso, Edgardo Henriquez.

The Dodgers are mostly set with the position players.

  • Freddie Freeman – 1B
  • Tommy Edman – 2B
  • Max Muncy – 3B (Has $10MM club option that will be exercised)
  • Mookie Betts – SS
  • Alex Call – LF
  • Andy Pages – CF
  • Teoscar Hernández – RF
  • Will Smith – C
  • DH – Shohei Ohtani

Reserves:

  • Hyeseong Kim – Utility
  • Miguel Rojas – Utility (Yes, I am presuming he will be re-signed)
  • Ben Rortvedt – C
  • Dalton Rushing – C
  • Alex Freeland – 3B/2B
  • Esteury Ruiz/Justin Dean – OF

In the Winter, most teams are looking for MLB ready players in return in a trade.  Prospects are more likely to be included at the deadline.

Esteury Ruiz and Justin Dean are potential non tender candidates.  They could be re-signed to a MiLB contract.  It will not be a financial consideration, but a 40 man spot consideration.  Non tender is a better option for the player as they will have more time to find a team, rather than be tendered and later released, say in ST.

The Dodgers will be looking to improve all three OF positions and 3B.  The Dodgers do not need a starting 3B for next year, but will need one in 2027 (Yes, I am assuming there will be a 2027).  Are the Dodgers confident that Alex Freeland will be able to assume that role or more of a utility role.  He still has options and he can moved from SS to 3B to 2B, and 1B (if needed) to replace Miggy Ro or Hyeseong Kim in 2027.  Or might some team place more value in him for a trade?  He is a top 100 prospect (#45) with a 55 FV, so he is going to have pursuers.   He is a 50 grade for hit/power/run, 55 for field, and 60 for arm.

IMO, Dalton Rushing is as good as traded.  He was the LAD #1 prospect who is blocked by Will SmithBen Rortvedt is a better backup catcher option than Rushing.  Take a look at the NLCS and WS roster.  Rushing is still in the dugout, and presumably working with the pitchers in their throwing days.  But Rortvedt is the next in line (as backup).  Rushing has more value for a team looking for a starting catcher.

But in order to get a MLB talent with All Star capabilities it is going to take more than some back of the rotation pitchers, an MiLB SS/3B, and a reserve catcher who is blocked.  Admittedly, I am not in the Andy Pages marching and chowder society, but he is the most logical player to be traded to get that difference making CF or 3B.  IMO, the most important position of need is a good to elite defensive CF who is also a good (not elite) hitter. Better bat to ball skills over slug.  I am working on a post with CF options.

I also believe that Teoscar Hernández is potentially a trade option.  He has a large contract, but the Dodgers could include higher prospect capital to induce a team to take him. They would also presumably include cash. Teams that need a DH would be the most logical options.  I can actually see a reunion with Toronto.  I am not predicting he will be traded, just that the Dodgers will pursue a trade involving Teo.

More to Come.

I think it maybe a quiet hot stove for the Dodgers. As always they will be linked to every big name available in free agency and trade talks but I don’t think there will be any blockbuster trades or signings this offseason. They may revisit trade talks for Kwan but they need a CF more than a LF. For 2026 they are mostly set position and pitching wise. They tried Kim a few games in center maybe an offseason and a full spring he could platoon in center with Call. This would move Pages to right and Teo to left where they are better suited. It will be interesting to see your center field plans. I do like your idea to bring Kopech back he could be a dominant force in high leverage if he’s healthy.

So much pitching….
Your analysis looks solid to me. Yes, River Ryan looks like he has the stuff to be a closer–and there probably won’t be room for him in the rotation of Yamamoto, Snell, Glasnow, Ohtani, Sasaki and Sheehan/Stone/???.
My guess, however, is that the Dodgers will again slow-play the season.
As a fan, I’d love to see The Full Ohtani from opening day to the last game of the WS. I’d love to see a Cy Young season from him while he leads the league in HRs. But I suspect that he’ll just be DHing until after the all-star break, to save the best for the homestretch.
Just a year ago we were wondering whether Mookie could really play SS. Now, I think, he’s locked into that job for the next few seasons. And who knew that some guy named Rortvedt turn top prospect Rushing into a trade commodity?
I agree that the immediate focus should be on finding a solution for CF, with Pages shifting to RF. (I’d be OK with trading Pages but don’t expect it.)
Ideal trade-target package might be a gold-glove CF with a decent bat and a young 3B prospect as Max’s understudy.
And let’s hope that De Paula learns how to play 1B…

I dont see Kike on that list. Why not bring him back again? We know he definitely can hit in October.

Would not trade Pages. Bring in a good defensiveCF and move Pages to right.
Look to trade from the surplus of starters and OF prospects for a 3b.
Keep Rushing. Kid will be a hitting machine soon.

Keep an eye on Yean as a future closer. Throws 103-104 mph. If he can learn to control his stuff (made big strides at the end of the MILB season) he could be our closer.

Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!

Never too early. Great analysis Jeff. I also think Rushing gets moved if the deal is right. Only way I do not see that happening is if they decide to start giving Smith some time at another position. I also believe Max will be retained. The price is just too good to pass up for his type of player. I also have changed my position vis a vis them signing a free agent CF or 3B. I thought because of what I read that they would consider Murakami. But defensively he seems like not much of an upgrade, and you never really know how hit bat will play in the majors. The youngest free agent CF of any good skill level is Grisham. But he played in Yankee Stadium, he has never shown those kinds of power numbers before. His 34 homers were double his previous high of 17. He is just 28. He is definitely a very good defender in center field.

Thanks for all this. Will help me get through day. I hope we go with a six man rotation and a bullpen stacked with versatile, multi-inning guys. Let the youngsters do the heavy lifting next year. No need to add an SP but a good FA signing can always lead to a trade for prospects.

I like Freeland as a bench guy. Rojas for one last year is fine. OF definitely needs revampibg. The book on Pages may ve written in the next five games.

We are loaded organizationally and the next wave of offensive talent still might be 2-3 years away. Some smart targeted moves should be all that’s needed. If Tucker wants to play here, let’s listen.

Tucker and Bichette. We may not need more pitching but I’d look into Suarez, Rogers and Keller. I have no idea who might be available in trade but the best center field option may be in house. Kim. From what I’ve seen he’s got terrific defensive instincts, is not only fast, but quick as well. It’s been my experience that anyone who can play middle infield can play outfield if given opportunity. What is the plan for him?

Yes, way too early.

Great rundown, always fun to think about the future. I don’t think Kopech (UFA) will be re-signed. He was a good acquire for 2024 but fragile with control issues. Not worth the headache, unless he signs for “nothing.”

I think the Dodgers biggest strategic advantage is being able to slow play their top tier SP (so they’re healthy in Sept/Oct), which creates all sorts of opportunities for their young arms and any veteran projects they take on.

To be a young arm in the Dodgers system is to have lots of opportunities to pitch in the bigs, perhaps more than other teams which are committed to 4-6 veteran arms and cannot afford to not have them in the line-up on a day-to-day basis.

If you are a veteran pitcher trying to land one more contract, there’s no better place than LA.

Same can be said for hitters a la Teoscar Conforto, although the latter did not work out.

Opportunities + Culture = Dodger Player Acquisition Strategy

This advantage is, of course, made possible with money but Dodger ownership has used it to successfully offset not having top draft picks.

Do Dodgers make a run for Murakami? Could he play LF? I would not trade Sheehan. We have a very fragile top end of starters. The only dependable one to go an entire season is Yamamoto. I think Sheehan, Ryan and Stone will play a big role in the regular season next year. Speaking of next year, who’s gonna get the start in game 1 of the WS 2026?

Just an awesome report Jeff. You really have great knowledge of the organization. I appreciate it. As I have stated previously, I’m not much of a GM and usually shut up and watch during the off-season. I know that has to be welcomed by some posters here. But you provide the details and I can watch the assembly of the 26 roster. I will, hopefully, be watching Spring Training again at Camelback with the information I gather over the winter. Thanks for all the research and knowledge.
One minor comment, and I may be all wet, but I think if Henriquez could ever figure it out, he has closer stuff. He’s only 23 and has flashes where I see Closer potential.
Well done Jeff.

I see your point about Henriquez. When he came up in August it seemed like he finally got over his control problems. But Sept/Oct he started to lose it again. I was surprised to see him on the WS roster in lieu of Caparius.

Admittedly, Pages has had a horrible offensive postseason, but I find the drumbeat to bench him, and now trade him, to be a little reactive. He was a 4 WAR player during the regular season, and is an exceptional defensive outfielder. His ideal position is RF, but he did a really good job at improving his routes in CF, and became more than competent there.

I revelation I had watching his year’s playoffs is what I perceive as a possible change in how clubs manage pitching staffs. Sasaki was an eye opener. He’s a guy with put-away stuff who can pitch in high leverage spots to get an out, or pitch three innings. It gives the club a huge amount of flexibility, and we really haven’t seen a whole lot of the regular season relief core in this year’s playoffs.

When Snell, Glasnow and Ohtani were on ice because of injury, I actually welcomed it. I don’t want them to pitch 180 innings. I don’t think they can.

The expanded playoffs has shifted the importance away from the regular season. Now, good teams should use the regular season to manage workloads with the goal of getting your top players to peak when it’s playoff time.

Your playoffs starting roster should hopefully be taking a mid-season hiatus from pitching. I dunno, maybe they get hang nails or something, but I think they should be rotated out of regular playing time. This is where all these young pitchers that Dodgers have will play a role – Sheehan, River Ryan, Ferris maybe, Sasaki even, Wrobleski. They should get significant playing time during the season. The top guys come back towards the latter half of the season with enough time to stretch out for the playoffs, but with lower mileage. They’re still fresh at at their peak.

The mid rotation prospect guys transition to a bullpen role during the playoffs.

The Dodgers are winning the old fashioned way – good starting pitching going deep into games, and a couple of dependable relief guys finishing games off.

I guess that rigid formula of a starting pitcher never, ever seeing the opposing team’s batting order for the third time because it violates some sabremetric cardinal rule is old school, sclerotic baseball managing. Complete games are the new moneyball. It’s a little hilarious when you think about it, and I still wish Rich Hill had been given the chance to continue pitching his shutout.

Back to 2025: Kike took reps in CF yesterday in practice, so maybe we’re considering Kike in CF today, and Call/Kim/whomever in LF and let Pages sit, for at least a game.

Pages has 12k and zero walks in October, so clearly he’s pressing.

Bobby I’m not surprised by Pages’ start. It’s late to make lineup changes for a guy who started in Center most of the season. Doc is pretty loyal to his guys this time of year and tries to instill hope instead of punishment for slumping at the worst time.
I could make a case that Teo could be benched as well as he is a “whiff-machine” There are few viable alternatives besides Call or Kike moving in.
I believe we will ride this out with Pages and cross your fingers.

Thanks for the writeup, Jeff. I love these columns.

You asked who would say no to Skenes or Skubal. I would say no to Skubal because I wouldn’t pay the prospect price for just one guaranteed year, especially for a guy whom I believe has already had 2 major arm-related surgeries. I would pay a whole hell of a lot for Skenes, though.

After thinking that there was no way AF would go after Tucker and being against it myself, I have now reversed my position. He’s pretty much a 4 WAR per year player, minimum, walks almost as much as he k’s and is a good fielder. Unless management is convinced that Teo’s mediocre season was almost entirely caused by injury, I would seriously consider trading him. That would open up right field for Tucker and Teo’s plus Kershaw’s salary would help pay for Tucker.

Starters – a good long list. If they plan to use Roki as a starter again beginning next year, I would think about trading Glasnow, Sheehan or Stone. Pitching is always in demand and they could bring back something very interesting, depending upon which of the three it was.

Wherever they put Roki (rotation or bullpen), I would put Ryan in the other spot. I think he could succeed as a starter but might make an even better closer.

Although our bullpen has been lousy lately, we may forget that part of the problem is overuse earlier in the year because our great starters were mostly on the IL. Hopefully next year, that problem will not repeat itself and with some minor alterations, the guys who haven’t performed lately will be back on track. I don’t know if Scott is going to be that All Star closer again, but I do expect him to be an asset, even if he doesn’t do that as the closer.

My “Bye Bye List” includes two of my longtime favorites, Kike and Gonsolin. I don’t see any way that either is back next year.

Assuming management doesn’t plan to use Rushing at third or in left field and doesn’t expect to play Smith at third, a trade of Rushing can’t be delayed. Every year he sits here without a chance to play every day reduces his trade value.

Others to move, just to clear 40-man spots if nothing else: Miller, Knack, Grove,

How has Doc run out of pitchers with so
mant multi inning innings guys in the Pen?

There is no way you can pitch a position player in the WS. Use Klein for
as long as he can go and if you have to go to Snell for one inning.

Agreed. Exactly my thoughts.

Mookie loves a Pop Up.

Ge wasn’t the only one. Call did it, so did several others. Not the time to point fingers.

Fricking Mookie has been complete garbage. Four IBB to Ohtani to get to Betts and he did noting.

Could you do better? Under that kind of pressure. He wasn’t the only one. Smith, Muncy, Call, all had shots to end the game earlier and so did Edman

Just stating the obvious. Why the need to “needle” and retort “could you do better.” Of course not, if I could I wouldn’t be posting frustration as a fan on this blog, I would be making $30 million a year.

The point of the post was Ohtani was walked intentionally four times to get to Mookie and he did nothing each time. Now that’s an embarrassment and yes, as a fan I expect better as does Doc I’m sure

Singling out Mookie when the whole team was flailing just seems a bit unfair to me. The entire offense was stagnant. Picking on one player, well, that in my mind is not right. Point fingers at the entire offense. Smith struck out 4 times and left more runners in scoring position with 2 outs.

What a freaking game. Klein was outstanding. Star of the game in my book.
