In 2017 26-year-old Max Muncy was released by the team that had drafted him, the Oakland A’s. It was the end of March, and the season was just underway. Max had played first, second, third, left and right field at times for the A’s in his short stints with the team. In parts of two seasons with the A’s, Max hit just .195 with 5 homers and 17 driven in. He went home and contemplated retiring from the game.
In April of that year, he got a phone call from the Dodgers. On the 28th of April, he signed a minor league deal with LA and was sent to AAA Oklahoma City. He had a decent season with the team batting .309 with 12 homers and 44 driven in while playing in 110 games. He played first, second, third and spent a little time in the outfield while with the OKC squad. Most of his games were played at third base. He was not a great defender there as his 9 errors in 53 games would attest.
Resigned that winter, he went to spring training with the Dodgers. He did not impress much with the bat; he hit just .208 and drove in 5 runs. He was sent back to OKC to start the 2018 season. He hit .313 in 9 games with 2 homers and 4 driven in. He was recalled to the Dodgers in April. He would play four different positions in 18 and had 30 at bats as a pinch hitter. He had 3 pinch hit homers and 9 driven in as a pinch hitter.
By the end of May, Max had 7 homers and 19 RBIs. He was hitting around.240. In June, he got hot. He batted .290 for the month with 10 homers and 16 driven in. His OPS for the month was 1.176. He slugged over .700 for the month. He also, in what would become a rarity for him, walked more than he struck out. Max would finish the year with a .263 BA, 35 homers and 79 driven in. His OPS was .973 and he slugged .582. He struck out 131 times. He did not hit well in the two-playoff series and the World Series, although his walk-off homer in the 18th inning of game three won the Dodgers only WS win. He struck out 23 times in 16 post-season games.
For the 2019 season, Max was signed for the MLB minimum salary, 575,000 dollars. His BA dipped 12 points, but he improved his RBI total to 98. His OPS was .889 and he slugged .515 as he once again hit 35 homers for the year. He hit 3 homers and drove in 7 runs against the Nats in the playoffs. For the 2020 season the team rewarded the 29-year-old with a 2.5-million-dollar deal.
Max had played the majority of his games at second base in 19. But he also split time at first and third. For a team that values versatility, he fit right in. Like many major leaguers, Max was hurt by the starting and stopping of spring training in 2020. When the season finally did start, Max had a tough time getting consistency. He played 35 games of the shortened season at first base; he split the rest of his time between second and third.
Max batted just .192 for the season. 16 of his 39 hits were for extra bases. 12 homers and 4 doubles. Although he did not get a hit in the 2-game series with the Brewers, Max heated up for the rest of the playoffs. He drove in 2 runs in the three-game sweep of the Padres. He hit 2 homers and drove in 6 in the LCS and had a homer and 6 RBI’s in the World Series win over the Rays.
Max looked forward to a better and more productive 2021. With Muncy you can be assured of a couple of things. One, he is going to strike out a lot. Two, he is going to OPS over .800 because he doesn’t chase a lot and he takes a lot of walks. You are also going to get some serious power. Max improved his BA to .249 for the 21 season. He slugged 36 homers, walked 83 times, struck out 120 times, and drove in 94 runs.
In the last game of the year, Max was injured on a play at first base. Offensively, it was a huge blow to the Dodgers. In his stead, the Dodgers would use Bellinger, Pujols and Beaty at first base. LA won the wild card and the NLDS against the Giants. They would lose the LCS to the Braves in six games. Over the winter, Muncy had surgery on his shoulder. He was ready to go by spring training but just how much strength he would have in the shoulder was any one’s guess.
There seemed to be no ill effects during spring training. Max slugged 3 homers and had about the same type of numbers he had most springs. But in 22, Max had switched positions. He was now sharing 3rd base with Justin Turner since LA had signed Freddie Freeman as a free agent. Max would play 84 games at third, 31 at second and DH 25 times. There obviously some residual problems from the injury.
By the end of July, Max was still hitting well under the Mendoza line. At that point, he had 9 homers and 32 driven in. He had walked 53 times and struck out 87. He finally got hot in August, batting .267 for the month with 7 homers, 19 driven in and a OPS over .900. He slipped some in September but still slugged 5 more homers and drove in 18 runs. He finished the season with a .192 BA, 21 homers, and 69 driven in. He was ok in the playoffs against the Padres. He had a homer and 2 driven in in the four games.
With JT moving on in free agency to the Red Sox, Max became the primary third baseman. The Dodgers were hoping for a return to form at the plate. He did improve some, but not much batting .202, and he was one of the Dodgers four hitters that year with 100 RBI’s or more. He also slugged 36 homers for the second time in his career and drove in 105, 2 behind team leader Mookie Betts. JD Martinez and Freeman also drove in 103 and 102 respectively.
You would think with an offensive juggernaut like that, they would plow through the playoffs. Nope, their pitching deserted them, and the D-Backs swept them out of the playoffs in three very forgettable games. Max was as bad as the rest of the offense, getting just 2 hits. During the run to the World Series in 24, Max struggled with the injury bug again, this time he had a balky quad. He only played in 73 games.
He did provide some power, 15 homers, with 48 driven in. He hit .232. He had 3 hits in the LDS against the Padres, one of them a homer. In the LCS against the Mets, Max found his stroke. He batted .333 with a pair of long balls and 4 driven in. He also had 11 walks in the series. He scored 4 runs and his OPS was over 1.100. But then he went ofer the World Series with 10 Ks and just 3 walks. But the team won.
Max went into this spring with apparently no health issues. He had a good spring, hitting .280 with 2 homers and 7 RBI’s. Unfortunately, so far, he has not been hitting very well. He seems to be chasing more than usual. He is striking out at almost a .50% clip. His walk rate is way down from his normal numbers, and he has yet to hit a homer. Now, if Max was hitting like he usually does, I doubt fans would want change as much as they do.
I understand they want better defense than what Max brings to the table. Many fans, me included, have wished the Dodgers had traded for Nolan Arenado. The thing is, LA could have had Arenado if they really wanted him. His salary is almost 20 million higher than Muncy’s. Yes, they can afford him, but for better or worse, and we have seen this with Chris Taylor, the Dodgers often are very loyal to their players. They also often trade a player away only to bring him back again. It happened with Kike.
We are not at this point in the year seeing the real Max Muncy at the plate so far. I doubt he would ever hit .300 or even.250. I do though expect him to hit for power, draw walks, and give you acceptable defense. We all as fans want Max and all the other players to succeed. At this point, 19 games into the season, it seems too many of them are not playing all that well. I have to believe the real Max will show up sooner rather than later.
MiLB GAME SUMMARIES
OKC Comets 4 – Tacoma Rainiers (Seattle) 3
Is James Outman showing signs of life? He led off the 2nd with a double to RF and scored on a Ryan Ward single.
The Rainiers got the run back in the 3rd. OKC went back in front in the bottom of the 3rd. Alex Freeland drew a BB. He stole 2nd and continued to 3rd on the catcher’s throwing error. Freeland came home on a Dalton Rushing sacrifice fly.
After getting the first 2 outs in the 4th, SP Matt Sauer was relieved by RHRP Ryan Sublette. After giving up a double, Sublette got the third out.
OKC extended the lead in their half of the 4th. James Outman and Ryan Ward each drew walks. Outman moved to third on a fly ball to CF and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Feduccia.
LHRP Joe Jacques followed Sublette and completed 2.1 scoreless innings with only one hit. LHRP Ben Harris gave up a BB and 2 walks in the 8th to surrender the tying run.
In the bottom of the 8th, OKC took back the lead on a one out Michael Chavis double, and a Ryan Ward two out run scoring single.
Harris went back out in the 9th and was able to retire the side allowing only a BB.
- Ryan Ward – 2-3, 1 BB, 2 RBI
- James Outman – 1-3, 1 BB, 2 runs, double (4)
- Michael Chavis – 1-4, 1 run, double (4)
Tulsa Drillers 7 – Wichita Wind Surge (Minnesota) 6
Jared Karros continues to struggle in AA. In three innings, Karros gave up 6 runs on 8 hits including 3 HRs. 5 of the 6 runs were scored via the HR. But Tulsa was able to come all the way back thanks to the heroics of José Ramos.
Damon Keith got Tulsa on the board in the 2nd with his 1st HR of the year. José Ramos hit a solo HR in the 5th to inch closer to the Wind Surge.
In the 6th, Ramos did even more damage with a grand slam HR (3) to tie the game. All three baserunners reached without the benefit of a hit. 2 walks and a HBP preceded Ramos’ HR.
RHRP Jeisson Cabrera, RHRP Antonio Knowles, and LHRP Jorge Benitez each pitched a pair of scoreless innings to keep the game a 6-6 tie. In five games, 6.1 IP, Benitez has not yet given up a run. He has allowed 4 hits and 4 walks to go with 10 K.
In the bottom of the 9th, Taylor Young and Chris Newell led off with singles. 22 year old C/2B Yeiner Fernandez, who is having a great start to the season, followed with a single to score Young for the walkoff win.
After a very slow start to the season, Tulsa has now won 4 straight games.
- José Ramos – 3-3, HBP, 2 runs, 5 RBI, 2 HR (3)
- Yeiner Fernandez – 2-4, 1 run, 1 RBI – Season .323 BA and .894 OPS
Great Lakes Loons 3 – Dayton Dragons (Reds) 1
This game has been circled for some time because 22 year old RHP Chase Burns, Cincinnati’s #1 draft pick in 2024 (#2 overall), and #24 on the MLB Pipeline Top 100, would be facing a pair of top 100 prospects playing for Great Lakes…Josue De Paula and Zyhir Hope.
In the top of the first one of those top 100 prospects had an OF assist. Josue De Paula threw out a runner who singled and tried to stretch it to a double.
Then in the bottom of the 1st, the Loons Top 100 prospects got the best of Burns. A non-Top 100 prospect, Kendall George led off the bottom of the first with his 3rd HR. De Paula drew a BB and then Hope slugged his 3rd HR of the season.
Zyhir Hope takes a fellow Top 100 prospect WAY out to the opposite field!

Burns only allowed 2 hits, but unfortunately for him, the two hits were HRs. The Loons trotted out Brooks Auger as the opposing pitcher to Burns. He was equal to the challenge as he pitched well against the Dragons for 5.0 innings before rain delayed the game in the bottom of the 5th. Auger pitched with traffic as he allowed 6 hits and 3 walks, but only 1 run. Auger also had 6 Ks.
In the 6th, the Loons picked up another 3. Zyhir Hope hit his 2nd HR of the game (4). With one out, Joe Vetrano drew a walk, and Jackson Nicklaus drew a two out BB. Catcher Carlos Rojas then roped a double to score two.
Robinson Ortiz followed Auger and pitched 2.1 scoreless inning. It was not a sterling outing, but it was scoreless nonetheless. Christian Ruebeck got the final two outs in the 8th.
Great Lakes got another insurance run in the 8th with a Carlos Rojas HR (1).
Dayton got an unearned run in the 9th. Too little, too late. Loons beat Burns and the Dragons.
Not to be outdone defensively, Kendall George also had an OF assist throwing out a runner at 3rd.
- Kendall George – 2-3, 1 BB, 1 run, 1 RBI, HR (3)
- Zyhir Hope – 2-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI, 2 HR (4)
- Carlos Rojas – 2-4, 1 run, 3 RBI, double (3), HR (1)
San Jose Giants (SF) 2 – Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 0
20 year old RHSP Sean Linan continued his mastery over the California League. In 5.2 IP, Sean did not allow a run on 1 hit and 1 walk to go with 10 strikeouts. After retiring the first two batters in the 6th, he reached 78 pitches and was pulled. 19 year old RHRP Marco Corcho walked the first batter he faced. He then gave up a single and then balked the runners to 2nd and 3rd. The next batter tripled home the two runners and a 2-0 San Jose lead.
21 year old LHRP, Cody Morse, pitched the final 1.2 innings for RC, retiring all five batters he faced.
RC was only able to muster 4 singles and three walks in their shutout loss. They struck out 14 times.
- 19 year old CF Eduardo Quintero – 2-3, 1 BB
Born June 14th, 1948, in Los Angeles California. AKA The Bear

Linanmania
Joendry Vargas after a blazing start has not played in some time for RC .
Injured ?
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!
He’s the guy with the Tatis skills package, though maybe not as much speed.
He is not injured; he is on the active roster. He might be working on some things with the coaches. Who knows.
Nice win tonight. Davis coined a nickname for the Edman-Yamamoto shut out combination, Tommymoto. The two extra runs in the 9th were nice. I would love to see Scott have a clean 9th inning. In his 11 innings pitched, Scott has given up 11 hits. He was saved in this one by two sparkling plays by Muncy. Scott does have 7 saves which is second to the Padres Suarez, who has 8. Edman’s 7 homers tied for the NL lead with Kyle Schwarber. Mookie is in a mild slump. His BA dipped to .254. Giants lost 2-0 to the Angels, former Dodger, Tyler Anderson pitched his best game of the year and Jansen got save # 452. Padres lost 6-4 to the Astros. LA 1/2 game back of SD.
Max with two outstanding plays in the 9th saved Scott and the Dodgers.
Scotts velo is down from last year by 2-3 mph. Concerning ? The reason he is somewhat shaky so far ?
Yoshi was great again today. Good way to kick off this tough road trip.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As good as Max looked, Pages with another iffy route failing to cut of the ball hit by Jung that went to the wall for a double. deGrom pitched a great game, just unlucky to hang one to Tommy Tanks.
Max 6 BB, only 3 Ks in last 5 games. On base 9 times. Coming around?
Scott. Slow starter?
This lineup sure looks less than without Ohtani in it. How long will he be out? 3 days started 4/18. Can transfer to the restricted list if more time is needed. Hope it isn’t.
It is time for those .100 hitters, which might include Conforto in his next at bat, to start contributing. Last night’s game was won with pitching and defense (Muncy). Team 5 for 30. 1 for 3 (only 3?) WRISP. Come on sticks.
1 to 3 days, according to Roberts, he could return Sunday or wait until Tuesday in Chicago. We got close to 5 inches of snow last night. Celebration of life for my friend Butch today, and I am doing the eulogy. Not really looking forward to that.
I don’t expect to see Shohei until Tuesday.
He could be but I’d rather see his walks coming from a good eye as opposed to taking pitches way out of the strike zone.
Is he now the guy who repeatedly walked in the NLCS or the guy who couldn’t get on base in the WS?
He took some very good pitches that were close today, and he came close to hitting his first homer, but got a double to drive in the go-ahead run. Max is who he is. The Dodgers are ok with it, us fans should be too.
Not even close to okay with it.
That is your problem. We have zero say as to who should be playing where.
Man Zyhir Hope has a really nice swing!
Can’t wait to see it in Dodger stadium. Hopefully Sasaki continues to move forward with his command tonight.
At least our Max Muncy is outhitting the other Max Muncy!
Sure does. Love the all-fields power. His speed is elite so he’ll just have to make contact and play passable defense to be an impact player. LF is wide open long-term.
Muncy looked good on that single and turning the double play. Team win.
So many options for in-season or 2026 upgrading weak positions. Rushing, Freeland, Kim all look to be candidates for roster spots next spring. Hope we’re slow-playing, as I can’t project a High A guy to be in the majors the next year.
Taylor, Barnes & Rojas are almost certainly gone, possibly at the deadline. I expect a slow turnover of talent and possibly a run at another young core talent [the Japanese 3B fits here].
Betts appears to call the shots so we’ll see where he’s most comfortable. Freeland is looking a lot like the 2026 SS.
Kim’s BA down to ,253. His OPS still above .800, but just barely.
I only see his highlights that are hits! 😉
Yep, that’s what they do. They don’t show the strikeouts. Last night, Newell was 0-4 until the 9th inning when he got a clutch single. Tulsa won when Fernandez singled in Young on the next pitch.
I’m not parting with Rojas this season. CT3 on other non-produces I’m good with going. Barnes is loved and I don’t see him cut loose. But Rojas is our best defensive infielder and I don’t care if he hits .100; he’s valuable. Cut bait somewhere else.
Rojas has a lot of value to this team. CT 3 is actually hitting better than Kike but hasn’t played all that much. He has been Doc’s go to defensive replacement for Conforto. Muncy and Conforto now have exactly the same BA. .203.
hope Max can get some more walks, chicks dig the walk. Get really tired of Max hoping for the walk and getting fooled by meat down the heart of the plate or swinging at one a foot outside. Hasn’t done much for us in a few years really. Maybe if he bats ninth he can draw a walk to be driven in by Ohtani.
“Hasn’t done much for us in a few years really.”
I don’t know what you have been watching. In 2023 Max had 36 HR and 105 RBI with an OPS of .808. Last year he OPS’d .852 and hit 15 HR and had 48 RBI in only 73 games.
He’s fine as a #8 hitter
Roberts does believe Max has turned a corner, his foul balls sound really loud and he has walked several times. If the bases were loaded he could drive in a run.
He hit several balls really hard the last few games. I am not worried about Max. I want to see improvement from Pages. I also want to see better contact by Conforto. He has not swung the bat well for a while.
😀
Well, you guys are stuck with me again, as I got to my northern home and am getting settled in. I had some remodeling done while I was in Az this winter, so I’ve been busy catching up and reading the posts from the last few days. I got my TV package going and am back in the game.
Some thoughts:
*Really good game last night. I love pitcher’s duels and this was a great one. Both deGrom and Yamamoto were terrific. Yamamoto was more unpredictable last night using his curve as an equalizer. It’s a great pitch when hitters are expecting the split or fastball. He had really nice command of everything last night making him unpredictable. Orel was quick to praise the scouting report.
*Nice post today Bear, on Muncy. He has been a frustrating part of an unproductive bottom of the order. But your post reminds me that Max is who he is and may be coming into past form. That form is hit .200, hit homers and draw walks which creates a high OPS. He is not a great hitter for average nor a great defender, although he played great last night. And he’s affordable. I need to remember that this is Max and he’s not Nolan Arenado. But he’s a valuable soldier for the Dodgers.
*Like Willie Adames before, some Dodger fans continue to covet Luis Robert Jr. I don’t get it? Have these kool-aid drinkers checked his current line? Why would we jump into the deep end of that pool, and give up players and pay that freight?
*Tommy Tanks has quickly won me over. He’s a Baseball Player. Last night he looked like a throwback to the stereotypical lead-off hitter, in a line-up. He does so many little things that helps his team win. At 2nd, to end the game on Max’s outstanding play, Tommy pulled off a pivot at second that Lux never quite got the hang of. Crossing the bag to receive the throw from Max, cutting down the distance, saving a few steps at first. That’s no time for a drop-step. He did this perfectly for an easy turn to end the game.
*Joc says he feels “restricted” at the plate. It’s no wonder. He’s working that body onto the All-Slo Pitch team with Rowdy Tellez, Alejandro Kirk, and Daniel Vogelbach. It’s a cinch Joc can’t move to first to hide as a defender. Remember that experiment?
*Not to pile on a struggling Andy Pages, but again he took a shitty route on Jung’s double in the second. It didn’t matter, as it was destined to be a double anyway, but I’d love to see him figure out better angles to baseballs.
*I’m looking forward to 2 games today. I make a point of watching Paul Skenes whenever he starts for the Pirates and Sasaki for us on FOX.
I hope we get the evolving Sasaki that doesn’t look like the 12 year old who’s getting bullied by the older kids.
Nice to be back……..and everyone keep up the good work.
I would prefer that the Dodgers use someone other than Ohtani in the lead off role. Betts is actually the better hitter for average leading off. Plus, he has close to 50 lead off homers. I still think and always will that a power hitter like Ohtani is wasted at leadoff. Sure, sometimes he is going to give you a 1-0 lead, but they miss a lot of RBI chances with him leading off. The Phillies do it with Schwarber, but I still think a conventional lead-off hitter would make this team that much better, especially with the bottom of the lineup hitting like they are.
I tend to agree with you. We keep hearing these stats about Ohtani not batting with guys on base. Well, that can be fixed.
I am totally with you on that Bear. Let Mookie bat leadoff and bat Edman #2.
Betts
Edman
Ohtani
Freeman
Teo
Smith
Conforto
Muncy/Kike
Pages/Taylor
I agree, I get tired of Roberts left right left right lineups.
I’d much rather have Edman lead off and Mookie second in your Ohtani scenario since Edman is far more likely to steal a base than Mookie. And Mookie (current stats aside) is more likely to hit a homer.
I also debated that. My first inclination was Edman leading off. I went with Edman batting second because of his bat control. He seems to be the kind of hitter that can hit behind the runner and get productive outs without striking out alot. Either would work for me.
It would probably come down to what Mookie preferred.
I wonder what Dodger management thinks of Jr.?
I suspect not much since nothing has happened. I think they see the same problems that we have all discussed.
I’m sure you’ve mentioned this before Phil, but where is your “northern home” located?
Love the All-Slo Pitch team you’re assembling. Gonna be a fan favorite.
Sasaki seems to be making progress. At this point I would guess that the front office is definitely satisfied with where he’s at, considering all of the non-baseball things a Japanese player needs to deal with at the beginning of his U.S. career.
Max WILL return. The question of course has to be for how long? How much is left?
Defensively he has only gotten more comfortable with 3B being his everyday spot. His instincts are now the instincts of a third baseman. But that doesn’t mean it translates to greater range, unfortunately. Unless he REALLY gets hot later in the season I think the Dodgers will do that hard thing – get younger as a team by not picking up his option. It’s HARD to see beloved core members of championship teams leave. JT is the most jarring example so far. Max will be another soon. So will Kiké, Barnesy and of course heartbreakingly Kershaw. But time marches on. Kinda sad.
It is sad. But it would be exciting if we had young players to replace them. It appears we don’t. Not yet anyway.
Where’s the next 6th round Matt Kemp, 62nd round Mike Piszza, or 5th round Mookie Betts and 9th round Albert Pujols. Those guys are out there every year.
There will never again be a 62nd round success story.
On the other hand, Jack Dreyer was signed as an undrafted free agent.
“There will never again be a 62nd round success story.”
Obviously. And Dreyer is a nice story. But I was referring to everyday stars. You know, guys like Piazza. Hmm. Sounds good. Think I might order one.
Just don’t let them add any pepperoni.
Can it be said that the Dodgers don’t develop and keep players within the organization who are not pitchers? There are some exceptions but I get the feeling that the farm is really a pumping station for trades the FO does for FA’s. With the exception of Will Smith, we’ve got no long term players who came up from the farm. Almost all of our talent is bought.
See, left right left right left right left left right. Of course, Edman is a switch hitter. But that doesn’t change Doc’s approach.
It’s smart for late-game opponent bullpenning.
Indeed, especially with the 3 batter minimum. what is the issue with it?
Works sometimes, others not so much. I just think your best hitters are not hitting where they should be in the lineup, that has always been my point. I don’t see Ohtani as a leadoff guy. I think it is a waste of a good power hitter. He should be hitting when there are men on base. Of course, if the bottom of the lineup was producing at all, he would be. But that is not the case.
Is this the beginnng of the end for Blake Treinen? He was placed on the 15 Day IL due to forearm tightness. Evan Phillips was recalled to take his place.
And they’ve already announced he’ll have an MRI.
Not even going with “we don’t think it’s very serious, it’s day to day and we expect him to be back in 15 days” which is the normal canned speech we get.
Has he ever had TJ?
No, it’s a sore arm.
Best CF’er in baseball baby!
I’m here for it
Nice play by Pages. Robbed Seager.
Well crap. Tough way to lose a game.
Pretty clear Yates didn’t have it.
Yeah – you could sense it coming.
Good outing from Roki though.
Robert Jr heating up. 1 for his last 3 with a home run and a couple of ribbies, raising his average to .145.
Haha trollin’
That’s what I was waiting for!………………………or is 3 at bats too small a sample size?
Puds lost. At least we didn’t lose ground on 1st place.
Giants are winning, so they will be a half game back of LA. Glasnow tomorrow. Should be a good game. Anyone notice how much Seager has changed his stance? He is really open now. He used to be closed a lot more and had his right toe pointed almost towards him.
There were times years ago when a loss like they had today would have upset me. I watched the game after the celebration of life for our drummer Butch. So, the loss was just another in a long line of blown games over the decades. You won’t win many just scoring 3 runs. Outside of their one inning outburst, the offense was not offensive. The K bug returned as they struck out 10 times. I was very encouraged by Sasaki’s performance. Kid is learning.
Maybe Yates shouldn’t be asked to pitch back to back. He was good last night. 2Ks in a clean inning. Tonight? 2 batters 3 rockets and 2 runs.
It happens, I remember how down everyone got on Jansen at times, especially when he went through a rough patch. He got his 452nd save against the Giants the other night.
