Yama Throws Another Gem, but He Gets Huge Help This Time

There will be a Game 7.  Thank you Tyler Glasnow.  Thank you Kiké Hernández.  Thank you Miggy Ro.  And thank you for not letting George Springer come up with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs and the game on the line.

The Dodgers had 4 hits, but 3 were in one inning.  Tommy Edman hit a one-out double and after Miggy Ro was called out on strikes, Toronto walked Shohei.  The second hit was a Will Smith double, scoring Edman and moving Ohtani to 3rd.  Freddie Freeman drew a BB to load the bases, and Mookie stepped up and hit a two-out, two-run single.  With runners on 1st and 2nd, Teoscar Hernández having a chance for a BIG inning, Teo struck out on 3 pitches, all out of the zone.

Outside of that one inning, the Dodgers had one hit, an Ohtani double, an IBB to Smith, and an unintentional BB to Mookie.  Seranthony Dominguez then struck out Teoscar swinging at three pitches well out of the strike zone.

Kevin Gausman was again outstanding except for one inning, but that is all it took…again.  The other 5 innings, it was 3 up and 3 down.  In 6.0 IP, 3 hits (all in the 3rd inning), 2 BB (both in the 3rd inning), and 8 K.  He had 20 swings and misses.

After the E5 on Max Muncy, the Dodgers actually played some good defense with three DP.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto is becoming a clutch pitcher in these must win games. He did it in Japan his final year there.  With his team trailing 3-2 in the Japan Series, Yamamoto got the start for the Orix Buffaloes in an attempt to force a Game 7. Yoshi proceeded to throw nine innings, allowing just one run on nine hits while throwing 138 pitches to secure the victory. Yamamoto also struck out 14 batters in the game, breaking Yu Darvish’s record for a single Japan Series game.

Yama did it again in Game 5 of the 2024 NLDS against San Diego.

And in Game 6 of the 2025 WS, Yama pitched 6.0 strong innings, even if he did not continue his dominance.  But this was the 2nd  time the Blue Jays have seen Yama, and you know they come prepared.  He allowed just the one run on 5 hits, 1 BB, with 6 K.  He was money when he needed to be.

But only going 6.0 innings, meant that the Dodgers had to have their bullpen go 3.0 innings without losing the lead and using their bullpen.  Tall task for this group.  Justin Wrobleski was first reliever up.  He pitched 1.0 inning, allowing a double to Ernie Clement, but getting 2 Ks, including Andrés Giménez to end the inning.

Next up was Roki Sasaki.  He gave up a leadoff single to George Springer on a rather weak ground ball just past Freddie and down the line.  After Sasaki got Nathan Lukes to hit a F8, he walked Vlad Guerrero Jr.  He got Bo Bichette to foul out to Mookie for the 2nd out, and then got Dalton Varsho to ground out to end the inning.

But it was in the 9th inning where the defense and defense IQ took center stage.  Sasaki got Alejandro Kirk 0-2, before he hit him on the wrist. Myles Straw was brought in to run for Kirk. That brought up Addison Barger.  On an 2-2 pitch, Barger crushed a double that got stuck under the fence padding.  Kiké was running to CF with his hands raised calling for an unplayable ball.  But it was Justin Dean who not only threw up his hands, but did not attempt to make a play on the “stuck” ball.  The play was called dead, and the runners were placed at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.  Here we go again.

Tyler Glasnow, who has never attempted a save in his professional career, was summoned to close this one out.  The first batter he faced was Clement who popped out to Freddie on the 1st pitch for the first out.  That brough up Giménez who has had some clutch hits in the playoffs.  On a 1-0 pitch, Giménez hit a flair into LF that Kiké got a great read and jump on, caught the ball and threw to 2nd to double up Barger on an even better play by Miggy Ro.

If the Dodgers go on to win the WS, that play will be forever remembered.

On 3 pitches, Glas got out of the inning without allowing a run, notching his first professional save.

It appears that Shohei Ohtani will be starting Game 7 vs Max Scherzer.  I have to assume that Glas will be the bulk pitcher, but everyone will be available, including Yamamoto.

Wouldn’t it be special if the LAD bats broke out for the final game.  I am putting it out there in the universe.

Game 6 thoughts:
Wow. we needed that. Yamamoto is the MAN. Do you think it’s possible that he has 3 or 4 innings in him for tomorrow night on NO DAYS rest? He’s saved our bacon.

I’m an uapologitic fan for Miggy Ro as many here know (STB) more on that later

Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci did the NO RESPECT treatment with Miggy again, bending the facts a bit: They mentioned too many times about the unusual substitution putting Miggy Ro in the line up because he hadn’t “had a hit in 30 days”.
No shit Sherlock. He hasn’t played. It’s to get an MLB hit and even harder to get an MLB hit while sitting down.
The truth is, he was 3 for 10 in the Playoffs. The Rodney Dangerfield of Dodger players.

Mookie’s 2 run single was an answer to a prayer. He’s been grinding so badly and I can’t describe how much that hit meant in many ways.

I don’t like George Springer. As part of the Astros cheating group he’s been hard to forgive. I need to get over it.
I’ve forgiving Bregman for reasons unknown. I think it’s because I’d like to see him at 3rd for the Dodgers.
Altuve – never. I will go to my grave believing that he wore a buzzer to hit the dinger off a slider from Aroldis Chapman.
But Springer is displaying an impressive drive. He could be sitting but he is being a warrior, obviously in pain, but competing his ass off. I tip my cap and have gained a lot of respect for him.

I don’t think any of us watching on TV have an appreciation for Gausman’s splitter. But when Major League hitters miss it 75% of the time on that pitch, you know it’s special. Gausman is a master at turning his 95 mph fastball play 98. He slows you down with that devastating splitter and than speeds you up with the fastball. He’s damn good..

So here’s what Miggy Ro brought to the dance

  1. The bullet he fielded up the middle
  2. The double play he started with the perfect throw to Mookie, on the money, with hair on it. Previously those were safe at first by an eyelash.
  3. The double-play to end the game. Miggy caught the tweeter-hop behind him. That’s some serious hands.
  4. Mookie, post game. explaining how Miggy teachin him wheree to play and what to do, IN GAME.

Keep him in the line up for game 7, please.

Smoltz said something pertinent about Yamamoto, when he pointed out his excellent balance while pitching.
3 things contribute to consistency a make an ACE: Those are Balance, Posture and Alignment. Yamamoto is excellent with all three.these 3 basic spots pitchers need to be in to repeat their mechanics. There are lots of ways to get there but 3 critical spots of these 3 points is at “lift and load”, at “foot strike with the ground” and at “release of the baseball”
Yamamoto has thise three essentials, NAILED.

How good is Vlad Jr.? Vlad Jr. got spent on a pitch away, flung the bat, hit a ball off the very end of his bat, with 1 hand, and it goes to the warning track for a double.

I was all in on seeing Worbs when we did.

We can win this with Ohtani opening with Glasnow, Snell for 2 and Sasaki for one.
3 starting pitchers and Sasaki.

I love Miggy Ro now. Admittedly I was wrong. He is a gamer. When the Dodgers need a clutch hit, or a defensive play, he is there to do it.

These are the types of players who often win world series for teams.

Excellent review.
I think it’s a lock that Miggy will be in the lineup… at least until Kim replaces him a pinch-runner with the game on the line in the 9th.
Roberts said every pitcher will be available tomorrow except Yamamoto.
Yeah… we get it….
Shohei, Glasnow, Snell will all be available. Plus all those relievers..
But I can imagine Yamamoto, who is something of a freak, warming up, especally if we have another extra-innings epic.
Why not? He’d have four months to rest.

Heady, clutch play by Dean to not pick up the stuck ball.

When Teo loses it at the plate, ..he really, really loses it! Right now he’s like CT3 in the twilight of his Dodgers career.

Still very worried about this team’s bats. Suddenly, Max and Teo look old and decrepit at the plate. Kike is in a fog too. I’m not sure this line-up is even capable of scoring more than 2 runs against Scherzer tonight.

Dodgers pitching must be GREAT again …just ONE more time.

“Heady, clutch play by Dean to not pick up the stuck ball.”

Excellent point Wayne.

Thankfully, Andy Pages wasn’t in CF at the time. I seriously doubt he was aware of the rule of putting hands in the air for an unplayable ball. He might have spent several seconds trying to pry the ball out of the dirt. The result would have been a two run, inside the park, HR. World Series to Toronto. What are the odds of that ball being pinned like that for the Dodgers? It’s got to be a sign favorable. That play by Dean may be the play of the WS if the Dodgers should win tonight.

It’s gut wrenching watching Teoscar hit. Sure, it’s nice to get an occasional RBI hit or HR. But, in between those ABs he is one of the most undiscipline hitters in MLB. It’s like WTF are you thinking and/or seeing? And it’s not just one swing at a uncompetitive pitch in an AB, but usually 2-3. Or, he take a couple of bad swings and watches strike three right down the middle. I know he’s a great teammate and comes up with some clutch hits, but are those instances worth the horror show in between? I say NO. He needs to be traded in the offseason.

That being said he’ll probably win the game tonight for the Dodgers.
I’m OK with that! I have no problem retracting my comment.

I was thinking the exact thoughts. As he ever read a freaking breaking ball/spin? Often it’s a ball out of hand and ends up in the middle of the LH batters box and he’s still swinging at it. If Pages was hitting at all it would have been Teo who was sent to the bench.

Go Dodgers!

Personal stuff still up in the air, but I just had to comment after that epic effort by Yoshi and the heads up play of Dean, Kike and Miggy. Anything can happen now, and after things looked so dismal after game five, I am a lot more optimistic that they can actually win this thing. Roberts said after the game that he was going to use the same lineup tomorrow. Good. Gives Max and Teo a chance to redeem themselves from really terrible at bats. LA has seen Gausman plenty. They should know better than to swing at unhittable pitches. Counting these 2 losses against LA in the World Series, Gausman is 2-5 against LA lifetime. All hands-on deck tomorrow, the pressure is on the Jays.

A solid decision by Roberts to stay with the same lineup. With Muncy and Teoscar it’s a crapshoot on what they might do offensively. They are both due to make a major impact in this game.

In perusing the team stats this morning I have to ask myself how the hell have the Dodgers won 3 games in this series? They are hitting .191 as a team, OPS’n .623 with 67 strikeouts. Betts is hitting .154, Edmonds is hitting.160, Kiké .174, Muncy .125, Freddie .217, Rojas .000 and Pages .067.

The answer to the question how of course, simply put, is timely pitching, including the starter that got the save last night. Yamamoto and Will Klein have WHIPs under 1. It’s been a staff effort. We can hopefully forget Snell’s 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA.

It was mentioned last night no team has won a title hitting under .200 since the ‘62 Yankees. Anybody remember that year? I sure do. In the final game of a 3 game playoff with the giants Stan Williams walked in the go ahead run in the 9th. That’s a long story for another day. The point being this could be the worst hitting team to win a World Series in 63 years! And if so, yay team!

Shoutout to Addison Barger for being doubled off second on a short fly ball to left. He’s going to remember that one.

I see today’s starting pitcher is TBD. Methinks the Dodgers will need more than 3 to win this one. How about 8?

We finally broke the curse of the 18 inning WS wins. We had been 0-4 in games played after those wins before last night.
And tonight, we need to break the CS team to sweep losing the WS to the team that went to 7 games in the CS curse!

The perfect scenario for tonight would be :
1) 10-0 lead
2) Kershaw comes in the 9th inning
3) he strikes out the cheating trash Springer to win the World Series

Also, on a more serious note, major respect for the Blue Jays bullpen guys, who all have “51” written on their hats as a tribute to The Vesia family. So cool of them.

That salute to Vesia by the Jays’ bullpen guys is one of the classiest moves I’ve ever seen by an opponent, especially in the middle of a hard fought series to determine the championship. Everything I’ve seen from them makes me want to root for them, except when they play us.

If my math is correct, no matter what the outcome tonight, the Dodgers will have the best win percentage in this year’s playoffs. They are now 12-4 which seems totally unbelievable considering how poor the offense has been for most of the post season.

Well, as they say, good pitching beats good hitting…………….unless the bullpen screws it up.

Toronto is a great contact hitting team; the Dodgers are not; not even close. It’s frustrating watching Dodgers hitters flailing at pitches out of the zone time after time. Beating a dead horse here, but no matter the results of tonights game RVS needs to go as soon as the last pitch is made.

I think comments Roberts has made during this series about the Dodgers playing the type of baseball that we have seen Toronto play. He didn’t say Toronto, but his description was what we have seen from Toronto. That’s the way Roberts played. With the top players aging it might be a good strategy. Aging hitters trying to hit slug against 100 MPH pitches isn’t going to be any easier. It will interesting to see if the hitting coaches are replaced. Too bad the hitting coach Jeff mentioned yesterday was not retained.

Dodgers offense owes a big game to the pitching staff and the fans.
Just have ONE frigging game in this series where you go on a combined hitting tear.

We have seen quite a few great plays from whomever was playing second for the Dodgers. Game changing plays. But Rojas having to catch a short hopper behind his back and turn his glove in a way to keep the ball in his glove was really entertaining plus the Kike’ to Rojas double play was a light switch flipping moment, turning off the game with such suddenness.

Great defense more often wins World Series games than Slug. Sixty-three percent of stats are made up on the spot.

Smith and Betts came through WRISP and I wonder if reversing their spots in the lineup had not been made if the results would have been the same.

Starting lineups out. LA has five players in the starting lineup hitting below .200. Toronto has five players in the starting lineup hitting above .300. Looks like a total mismatch on paper. Get to Scherzer early because the Jays are going to pull him if he gets knocked around. Yesavage probably the first arm out of the pen. Also expect the Jays to walk Ohtani intentionally every chance they get unless the guys behind him make them pay. It is on Smith, Freeman and Betts big time. Bottom of the order needs to contribute too.

Wow. Just wow…. so many times over.
I didn’t follow the game live, which my cardiologist might think is a good thing. So much stress… but ultimately the thrill of victory.
Yes, a storybook kind of game. The Blue Jays started it by proving that Shohei is mortal. And then the Dodgers chipped away at that lead, with several players stepping up, on the mound, at the plate, in the field.
So many fantastic moments.
When Max was at the plate, I thought, “a homer now would be nice.” And he delivered. But when Miggy was at bat I just wanted him to get on base.
I just saw the highlight of Andy Pages running over Kike to make that catch… just wow. That will be an all-time memory–and some redemption for Pages, having been benched for his horrible slump.
Only in the 7th game could you see these kind of heroics, with all hands on deck. Yamamoto now takes his place with past WS heroes Koufax and Hershiser. Fantastic.
And it seems fitting that the game would end with 6-3 double play, Mookie to Freddie.
Hooray Dodgers!
And congratulations to the Blue Jays, going from last place last season to this amazing game in November. They did Canada proud.
Bo Bichette is a free agent. I hope Toronto makes sure that he and Vlad Jr. can play together for many years to come.

We don’t need to score 8. Just pitch Yoshi every inning.

Check everyone’s eyesight, including any free agents or trade targets. Those who need corrective lenses (to 20/10) get them fitted.

Find a centerfielder. If it takes our best prospect (Rushing) so be it.

I know this won’t go over well here, but, thank you for your volunteering to play shortstop Mookie, but at 33 you are now the starting second baseman. May that move revitalize your bat. Find that shortstop that will be here for 5 years.

Fix the bullpen pieces.

Tell us why Vesia wasn’t able to contribute.

More later.

Shout out to Blue Jays. I still think they were the better team this series. Heartbreaking loss for them.

Much respect to the Blue Jays. I would have been very happy for them if they won — super-likable team!

What a series and what a game!
Yamamoto was unreal and a true MVP. Three wins and he was even ready to pitch in the 19th inning of the other win.
Amazing performance. He was also their playoff MVP last year with a clutch shutout in game 5 against Padres.
Congrats to Jeff for sticking with the Dodgers through the ups and downs.
And great call by Phil Jones who asked if Yamamoto had 3 innings in him before the game!

Stunning win. Will Smith is still the best hitter on this time. Miggy Ro with an ambush homer, his first against a RHP this year. Yoshi was clutch, but there were so many heart stopping moments. Pages with the defensive play of the game. Kike is going to feel that hit for months. Congrats to the Jays on an outstanding season. They outplayed the Dodgers in every facet of the game.

I’ll get the one negative out of the way first.

The Dodgers come-from-behind win was powered by Muncy/Rojas/Smith scoring the Dodgers last 3 runs on solo shots against pitchers who were obviously struggling with sub-par performances. The pro-RVS guys will somehow use this to argue vindication for his “slug-is-king” hitting philosophy. And by golly, ..they might be right. ..even tho I still don’t buy it.

Now to the celebration!!

Okay, I’m in shock. I never believed the Dodgers could win this thing until the top of the 11th when Smith went yard. And while all the “inside metrics” will say LAD “stole” this series against a better Jays team, ..I say, SO WHAT!! Go “thieves” ..errr GO DODGERS!!! hehe

Seriously, this is the BEST WS I’ve ever seen!!
It had everything, and then some.

And this Dodgers championship feels BETTER than last years because they beat a Toronto team that is clearly better than last season’s Yanks team.

An unsung hero for the good guys is Pages. On that deep fly ball he ran over Kike to catch, he simply wasn’t close enough to him to warn Kike in time that he would catch the ball. So he just sold his body out to make sure he caught it. And that play ALONE for me will make up for the other times he didn’t “sell out” at the wall to leap for a few home runs that he gave up on this season. Way to go Pages!! You made a big-time play to save our season!

Yamamoto just became a Dodgers LEGEND for his incredible MVP performance in this series. He’s THE MAN!!

I’m still in shock and on CLOUD 9 at the moment!

Hold up there bud. Hoffman has pitched really well in the World Series. Miggy’s homer off of him was the only run he had allowed in the series. As a matter of fact, it is the only homer he allowed in the playoffs. Bieber wasn’t struggling either. He pitched as a starter in LA and got the win. Yesavage gave up one hit in his relief appearance, Muncy’s dinger. He dominated them in his game 5 start. All those homers were hit off of very good pitchers.

Yes, they’re very good pitchers, but in THIS game, Hoffman/Bieber/Yesavage showed vulnerability by throwing too many “sitter” pitches that other Dodgers batters (who didn’t homer), were nonetheless coming close to squaring up and hitting hard too.

So those 3 “very good” Toronto pitchers, nonetheless, were not sharp and gave sub-par PERFORMANCES in THIS game because they hung too many breaking pitches.

Does anyone know why Kim replaced Rojas? Seemed like a strange substitution to me.

Rojas injured his ribs throwing out Kiner-Falefa at home plate in the 9th inning. Kim replaced him at 2nd in the 11th.
