08-04-2022 MiLB Summary

OKC Dodgers 7 vs Salt Lake City Bees (LAA) 8

Former Arizona DBack #1 prospect (2017-2018) and MLB #73 prospect (2017-2018), Jon Duplantier got roughed up again.  It is more evidence that prospects are ere mere suspects until they aren’t.

Michael Busch slugged his 13th OKC HR (24 for the year) in the first to give OKS a 1-0 lead.  After falling behind 4-1 after 2, Ryan Noda doubled home a pair and Tomás Telis singled home 2 more and a 5-4 lead.

However, in 3.0 IP Duplantier allowed 8 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits.  He did record 5 Ks in the 3.0 IP.  If this was an isolated game, there would not be much concern.  However for his last three games, he has pitched 8.1 innings, and allowed 19 runs (14 earned), on 20 hits and 4 BBs.

The good pitching came about beginning in the 4th.  4 OKC pitchers pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, giving up a combined 1 hit and 4 walks.

Ryan Noda got OKC close with a 2 run HR in the 7th, but they could not get any closer.

Box Score

Tulsa Drillers 23 vs Northwest Arkansas Naturals (KC) 7

This started out to be a major back and forth slugfest.  The score was 6-6 after 4 innings.  But then Tulsa scored 7 runs in the 5th, 6 in the 7th, and 4 in the 8th.  The Naturals scored one in the bottom of the 8th for the final score.

Alec Gamboa got roughed up and he gave up 5 runs resulting from a 2-run HR in the first and a 3-run HR in the third.  Gamboa threw 77 pitches in 2.1 IP.  Six pitchers followed to pitch 6.2 IP.  The most effective pitcher was 24 year old RHRP, Nick Robertson.  I was hoping that Robertson was going to build on his first two seasons and move to AAA and put himself in a position for a bullpen spot.  However, Nick got off to a horrendous start.  But his last 9 games have been outstanding.  In those 9 games, Nick has thrown 14.1 innings.  He has allowed 1 run (HR), on 7 hits, 3 BBs, and 19 strikeouts.  This is the Nick Robertson I was expecting.  It sure would be nice to see him get 1+ months at AAA.

The Drillers scored 23 runs on 21 hits and 7 walks.  The Drillers pulled out their big bats.

Box Score

Great Lakes Loons 5 vs Lake County Captains (Cleveland) 4

This was a great comeback win for the Loons.  Down 4-1 with 2 outs in the 9th, Damon Keith singled.  With 2 strikes, José Ramos hit a 2-run HR (16) to get the Loons close.  But there were still 2 outs. Again with 2 strikes, Imanol Vargas hit a game tying HR (15).  The Loons scored on a dropped third strike and a throwing error in the 11th inning.

Nick Nastrini started and went 6.0 IP.  His downfall was a 2-run HR and a solo HR for the three runs he allowed.  He yielded 4 hits and 2 BBs.  He also recorded 8 strikeouts.  The Captains scored a 4th run on a pair of BBs and a pair of WPs.

Four Loons pitchers completed the final 5.0 IP without surrendering a hit, but did have trouble with finding the strike zone by issuing 8 walks.  Ryan Sublette completed the final two innings to seal the victory.

Damon Keith and Imanol Vargas both had 2 hits.

Inland Empire 66ers (LAA) 1 vs RC Quakes 4

This game was impactful because 5 more 2022 draft picks made their RC debut.

Nick Biddison – RF – 0-2

Dalton Rushing – C – 2-3 – including his first HR

Kyle Nevin – 1B – 0-3

Sean McLain – SS – 0-3

A 6th draftee, Chris Alleyne – OF, played in his 2nd RC game and he went 1-3.

In Dalton Rushing’s first RC AB, he hit a HR to tie the game at 1.  The Quakes broke the game open in the 7th when they scored 3.  Luis Rodriguez opened the inning with a single.  Kyle Nevin was HBP and Sean McLain drew a walk.  Taylor Young double home 2 and Jake Vogel hit a sac fly for the 3rd run of the inning.

Gabe Emmett started and gave up a HR in the 2nd inning for the 66ers sole run.  Benony Robles, Joan Valdez, and Madison Jeffrey finished the final 7.1 scoreless IP.  Combined they surrendered 2 hits and 3 walks.

Besides Rushing, Luis Rodriguez had a 2 hit night.
