It was the one game in this series I thought the Dodgers would win for sure, but sometimes it doesn’t work that way. With Yamamoto on the mound, I felt he would outpitch the Padres rookie, Ryan Bergert. Bergert though kept the Dodger bats at bay giving up just 3 hits and a walk while striking out three in his 4.2 innings of work. Up until that point in the game, except for a second inning homer by Bogaerts and then a sac-fly by Iglesias scored Bogaerts with the second tun in the 4th. Bergert got into some trouble in the 5th, after retiring Muncy and Pages, Edman walked, and Kim singled him to third. Morejon replaced Bergert and got Ohtani to ground out back to him.
Yoshi gave up another run in the 7th on back-to-back doubles by Bogaerts and Cronenworth. Iglesias struck out and Trevino replaced Yoshi and got the last two outs. Padres scored 2 off of Jack Little in the 8th, the first coming after Arraez tripled then scored on a one-out single by Sheets. The Padres then loaded the bases and scored the fifth run on a bases loaded walk to Iglesias.
Roberts seemed to throw in the towel at that point and in the bottom of the 8th inning, he pinch hit Rojas for Betts, who singled after Ohtani struck out to begin the inning, he than PH Rushing for Smith and finally Kike for Freeman. Both of those guys struck out ending the 8th. In the Padres half of the 9th, things got more than a little testy. Little struck out Maldonado. He then hit Tatis Jr. with a pitch, the second time he had been hit in the series.
Roberts and Shildt came out of the dugouts yelling and cursing each other and both benches emptied. Shildt and Roberts were both ejected. A pinch runner replaced Tatis. Little got Arraez to pop out and Machado to fly out to end the 9th. In the bottom of the inning, Reynolds came in to pitch for San Diego. Teo and Muncy walked. Pages flied out to the wall in left center. Suarez replaced Reynolds and was greeted by a Tommy Edman single which was misplayed by CF Lockridge and Teo scored with Muncy going to third and Edman to second.
Kim then grounded out short to first, Muncy scored, and Edman went to third. Ohtani to the plate. On a 3-0 count, Suarez hit Ohtani high up on his shoulder. The umpire ruled it was intentional, and Suarez was ejected from the game he also ejected their bench coach. Ohtani waved the training staff off and even went over to the Padres bench to try and calm things down. Matsui relieved Suarez and he proceeded to throw a wild pitch that wound up in Maldonado’s gear and the umpire ruled a dead ball and sent Edman home with Ohtani moving to third and Rojas on first with a walk.
With the score now 5-3, the first 5 pitches to Rushing were all balls, but the umpire made some really bad calls, and it was 3-2 to Rushing. Matsui then threw a perfect strike that Rushing swung at and missed ending the game. LA went 17-12 against teams with a winning record over that 29-game stretch. They finished 5-2 against the Padres over that stretch and 2-1 against the Giants. They lead San Diego by 5 games and SF by 3. 5 while currently having the best record in the NL at 46-30. Their next 9 games are against teams currently under .500. DC, the Rockies, who lost to DC tonight and the Royals who are 1 game under.500.
The home plate umpire, Marvin Hudson made some really bad calls with an especially egregious call depriving Yamamoto of an immaculate inning. Believe it or not, there have been several posts on Yahoo sports saying this guy should be fired. LA had trouble with this umpiring crew the entire series with several balls and strike calls made that were highly questionable. Plus, Roberts thrown out twice in a four-game series? That has never happened before.
LA’s offense was totally shut down by Padre pitching amassing just 6 hits, 2 of which came off of the bat of Tommy Edman. DC comes in tomorrow for a 3-game series to end the homestand. The Dodgers placed Gonsolin on the 60-day IL and recalled Little. Sheehan was optioned to AAA. No pitching matchups announced yet.
Minor League Scores
OKC 7 Round Rock 6. OKC built up a 6-1 lead only to have Round Rock score 5 in the top of the 9th to tie the game. Feduccia went 2-4 with a homer and a double driving in 2. Hoese had a homer. Ruiz had 2 hits and drove in a run. Ward had a triple, Outman and Gauthier had doubles. In the bottom of the 9th, Kimbrel came in for Round Rock. He walked Feduccia and struck out Dean. Feduccia went to second on a wild pitch. Ruiz singled Feduccia to third and then stole second. Senzel flied out to short left field. Hoese walked loading the bases. On a 3-2 pitch to Gauthier, it was called a strike, but they challenged, and it was a ball, giving Gauthier a game winning walk off walk. Kimbrel took the loss and Julian Fernandez, who got the last out in the top of the 9th, got the win in relief. Jarvis started going 5.1 innings and giving up just 1 run.
Midland 6 Tulsa 5: The Drillers fell behind 6-1 after scoring the first run in the bottom of the first. They had a 4-run rally to make it 6-5 in the 8th. They had only 6 hits, 3 of them by Simmons and 2 from Young. Simmons drove in 3 in the 8th with a bases clearing double. Loss went to Brandon Neeck who pitched just 2.1 innings allowing 2 runs.
Great Lakes 13 Peoria 4: Going into the bottom of the 7th inning, Great Lakes was leading, 3-2. They scored 8 in the bottom of the 7th and 2 in the bottom of the 8th for their final tally of 13. They got their first run on a Sirota homer in the 1st, his 4th of the year. They scored 2 in the bottom of the 4th on a double by Diaz. He then scored on a single by Wagner. Wagner went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Nevin doubled. Bottom of the 7th: Rodriguez singled, George and DePaula walked. Sirota hit a sac-fly, and the other two runners moved up 90 feet. Vetrano walked and Wagner struck out. Nevin singled in George and DePaula, Vetrano to third, 6-2 GL. Gelof hit a 3-run homer to left, 9-2. Thompson doubled and Rodriguez homered to end the scoring in the 7th, 11-2. Peoria got 2 back in the top of the 8th. With 2 outs, Wagner was HBP and Nevin walked. Gelof then doubled them both in giving him 5 RBIs on the night. Gutierrez got the win, his 4th with 2.2 innings in relief of Fox who went 4 scoreless.
Rancho 3 Lake Elsinore 2: The Storm scored 1 in the first to take the lead. Rancho scored 1 in the bottom of the 4th when Martinus tripled and then came home on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the 8th, Guerrero walked and went to second on a passed ball. He then scored when Quintero singled to center. 2-1. The Storm tied it in the top of the 9th on a double, a wild pitch and then a ground out. In the bottom of the 9th, Meza walked, Martinus walked, and they were moved up on a sacrifice by Perez. With Nicklaus at the plate, the pitcher, Ruiz balked and Meza scored. Patick went 5 innings allowing a run. Sanchez pitched 3 scoreless. Cruz, who blew the save got his second win.

Weird game. That last at bat was not fair to Rushing. Marvin Hudson made way too many egregiously poor calls (all night) and that at adds up to affecting the game’s outcome, something every ump wants to avoid.
And what to do about it? Nothing. Not this year.
On a night when strikes were balls and balls were strikes it’s hard for me to evaluate Little’s performance. His stuff looks good, but the outcome was 2 earned in 2 innings, not good. Should he stay? I have no idea but my guess is probably not. With 13 ML quality pitchers on the IL it seems somebody on that list, maybe a few somebodys, would bump guys like Trivino and Little.
Pinch hit for both Betts and Freeman? What’s up with that? Waving the white flag?

Ive gotta be honest, I’ve had to wait 6 hours and take a number of deep breaths before posting this morning.
I mentioned the same thing a couple of weeks back when he gave up on a game only for us to
mount a comeback in the 9th when Pages hommered. Last night what harm would it have done to let Mookie, Freddie and Will hit before taking them out for the bottom of the 8th? Made zero sense. Zero, other than to tell the Padres they had won.
It sends totally the wrong message. Never ever give up. We’ve all seen highly improbable things happen in Baseball and last night proved to be exactly that. The Padres were in total disarray with a reliever having to warm up on the mound because of Suarez ejection. The HPU was their saviour of course, but Robert’s white flag was an insult to his players and the fans. I’m not sure if I was an owner I’d have been to happy either.
This early surrender and the nonsense of Kike the other night leaves a bad taste. Too cocky by half.
I sincerely hope that the players had enough about them to let Roberts know that was unacceptable.
I still don’t understand what people see in Robertts. Imo he’s a joke certainly not a good manager nor leader. Continuous year after year misusing bullpen and players but hey he just signed an extension the powers that be love him.

I too often wonder about some of his moves, many of which are done attempting to mend the organization’s offering of broken pieces. Glue the multimillion dollar vase together and pour out wins. In the end, I have no problem with Roberts.

Oh my word, get the whine out with your Roberts cheese. He’s steering the ship nicely. Standing tall last night will endear him to his team even more! He’s gonna be a HOF manager with multiple (hopefully many more WS rings). He’s gets my support for being smart and a great leader of this team
He still should not have pulled the plug on 3 of his best hitters. That game might have ended a lot differently had he left them in. They were down 5, not 10.
I have no doubt the next time these two teams meet, Friday the 15th of August at Dodger Stadium, that the bad blood will continue. Especially if after having his hand get imaging, Tatis ends up with a broken hand and misses some time. I understand them getting pissed because their star player got hit, but Little is a rookie, and he obviously was not throwing at the guy, whereas the plunking of Ohtani in the 9th was obvious payback. Shildt and his team overreacted to the situation at the time. But the bad blood will still be there no matter what. These two teams do not like each other.
